Doug locked the door to the Wishes Gone Wrong department behind him, sighing as he ducked his head to miss the bare light bulb hanging in the broom closet. Yesterday, that door had opened onto the rooftop garden. The building was forever morphing in an attempt to lock down the vagrant Wishes Gone Wrong department, but ever since that one bad wish had escaped years ago, the department just didn't seem to want to stay put.

Last Thursday, he'd entered his office through the fourth floor canteen, and when he'd clocked out that evening he'd found himself in the Ladies powder room five floors above. While he'd appreciated the rare insight into the feminine stronghold, the ladies had not been amused. If it weren't for his stellar security clearance, and his ability to hack into every known system on the planet, and a few farther out in the galaxy, he'd be out looking for a new job right now.

As it was, he was on his way to the biggest Sci-Fi convention in the known universes to rescue a luscious lady named Jenna from a wish gone very, very wrong. He felt a contented smile curve the corner of his mouth. Nothing like a good old-fashioned brawl to start the weekend off right

* * *

Jenna eyed up the green-skinned alien, making sure to keep a healthy distance between them. Maybe she should have been a little more specific when she'd wished for a lover with stamina. Like, maybe she should have specified that he be a nice male, a nice human male. She'd never met a demon, but this character seemed to fit the description. He had the horns, the fiery red eyes, and that total lack of consideration for anything anyone else said.

"Go away. I have no intention of going back to your place, wherever that might be." She had a sinking feeling his place might be in a whole other dimension. Taking another step backward, she felt the cold cement of the wall behind her. "This is one huge mistake."

The monster roared something unintelligible and stomped his big green foot. Glowering at her with those demonic eyes, he moved sideways, cutting off her escape route. If the drool dripping from the side of his mouth was any indication, he might be planning to make a snack out of her.

She snuck a look past him, hoping someone would notice the big green alien and come to her rescue. Unfortunately, at the biggest Sci-Fi convention on the known worlds an alien really didn't stick out the way he would on Saville Row or at the opening of a new play on Broadway. She sighed, flicking the safety on her tazer to the off position as she pulled it from the top of her knee-high boots. Sometimes a girl just had to get mean.

"What will it take to convince you that I'm not going anywhere with you?" She brandished the tazer in front of her, hoping it held a big enough charge. She didn't recall "oversized alien demon" being one of the settings. "Now run along and play nice with the Trekkies."

"Oh, I love a gal with her own tazer."

Jenna started at the sound of a deep voice to her left. Keeping a wary eye on her would-be suitor, she turned her head enough to see the owner of the voice. Nice!

She'd always had this fantasy about a high-tech cop, and the man grinning at her from beneath his vintage twentieth century helmet certainly looked like he could live up to it. The skintight blue uniform did nothing to hide his broad shoulders and a massive chest that narrowed to lean hips and a very nicely shaped butt. He took off the helmet and ran his fingers through his hair. The red streaks in his dark hair gave him that bad boy look that sent her pulse racing. She licked her lips in appreciation. Now why couldn't her wish have conjured up someone like him?

If he managed to keep up with her, she might just let him replace Green Fuzzy here as her evening entertainment. That touch of alien blood her mother had gifted her with meant most human males had a hard time walking away once she was satisfied -- not because they found her irresistible, but because they were just plumb worn-out.

Actually, she recalled a few of them running away screaming. Seems human men were really spooked by a girl who kept asking for more sex, especially after the first couple of hours. Still, this one looked like he might be fun while he lasted. She gave him her best come-hither grin and sidestepped as the monster made a grab for her arm.

He replaced his helmet. "I don't think that's a costume. Greenie here looks like one of the Tra'toni from the Jupiter colony."

Definitely a southern drawl. A trickle of heat warmed her belly. "I really don't care," Jenna snorted. "When I wished for a male to amuse me, I kind of had a human male in mind."

"Should be more careful what you wish for, then." The man slid out of the path of the monster, landing a nasty chop in the small of its furry back as it stumbled past him.

Jenna rolled her eyes. "Hindsight and platitudes. Just what I needed."

After years of besting opponents in business, Jared Scott decides he wants a more powerful competitor. A creature with the strength and speed of a wolf and the cleverness of a human being fits the bill. He contracts with WishLabz to help him hunt a werewolf.

Jared's consultant at WishLabz, a werewolf named Amanda, has a history with hunters that goes back to when some men killed her parents. She doesn't like them, and so she doesn't like Jared much, either. She plans an ugly surprise for Jared, but it turns around and bites her, too.

"I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, Jared," she said.
No formalities, indeed. "I forgive you, Amanda."
She flinched at that, but only just barely. Someone who spent less time than he did reading people would have missed the slight narrowing of her eyes. Either the forgiveness bit or the pointed use of her first name had irked her. Fine. Only his few friends called him Jared. No one here counted as his friend.
"Well, then. Let's get on with it." She headed down a corridor, her long strides taking her away from him and forcing him to catch up. He took his time doing it. For one thing, she could damned well wait for him for a bit. For another, hanging back gave him a good view of her ass.
Though more slender than the pixie-cat, Amanda had her own curves. She wore leggings underneath a bulky sweater, and her movement sent his imagination into overdrive. Every swing of her hips, no matter how subtle, suggested the rounding of her buttocks. Just the right size to fit into his hands.
By the time she stopped in front of one of the offices, he'd taken measure of her breasts. Small, but firm. And when they'd entered and she'd taken her seat behind her desk, his cock had already begun to thicken and harden in his pants. She bit her lip and shot him a gaze that went right through his chest and down to his groin. Recognition. She knew what was happening between them.
"Please, sit down." Her voice came out as deep as before, but now it had a hint of breathiness as well. She had a husky way of speaking. Something that made her linger for a millisecond on the vowel sounds. Sweet. Seductive.
Before his anatomy embarrassed him completely, he sat and watched her sift through some papers. She didn't make eye contact, but a flush to her cheeks told him she was as aware of his presence as he was of hers.
After a moment, she picked up one sheet and studied it. Her eyes widened as she stared up at him. "This is your wish?"
"To hunt a werewolf. Yes."
"Why?"
"I suppose you've read my dossier," he answered.
"Everyone in R and D becomes acquainted with the histories of our clients," she answered. "You've served as CEO of a number of companies. Now you have your own."
"Government contracts. Top secret, much of it."
She set the paper down and studied him. "Military?"
"Intelligence, mostly." In fact, his agency contacts would take a dim view of his coming here and an even gloomier one if they knew what he'd come here for. None of their damned business. "So you can see why confidentiality is so important."
"We never give away information about our clients." There was that deep tone again. The slow, downward inflection on "clients."
"Then we understand each other," he said.
"Not at all," she said. "What does your history have to do with your wish?"
"Human beings... ordinary people... how shall I put this?"
She stared at him evenly. Assessing him the way he normally did with others. He had no reason to doubt her intellect, but he seldom encountered an equal. Given that, and what her body did to his, she might present a real challenge with more than a little pleasure on the side. Right now, she obviously wasn't going to help him explain himself.
"I want to hunt the greatest predator on Earth. You'd think that would be a human being," he went on. "But average people are motivated by only a handful of things. Once you've figured out what they want, they're really rather boring."
"And so your interest in werewolves."
"What a creature. Imagine. The speed and keen senses of the wolf combined with the mind of the human. What kind of opponent one of them would make," he said.
"Your wish is to hunt one."
"You can't hunt big game these days and, honestly, I have no interest. Animals are dumb beasts, and they belong in the wild."
Another woman might have applauded his kindness. Amanda sat and stared at him out of her startling blue eyes.
"I don't think the authorities would like me hunting people," he continued. "But if WishLabz could create a werewolf for me, I could hunt that without breaking the law."
The room fell into complete silence, and the woman sat across from him like a sphinx, not moving, hardly blinking. After a moment, she leaned back in her chair. "Create a werewolf?"
"You can make magic here, at least according to the people who referred me. I don't know what sort of technology you have. If you can't design a credible werewolf for me, you can refund my money."
"And how would you kill this creature?" she asked. "Shoot it with a high-powered rifle from hundreds of yards away?"
"I didn't say kill. I said I wanted to hunt it."
"Killing the target's the whole point of hunting, isn't it?" she asked.
"One or both of us might die, I'll admit," he answered. "It'll be dangerous sport."
"Sport," she repeated. This time her accent suggested more than a hint of derision.
"I don't expect you to understand."
That got a definite reaction -- one eyebrow arching. "Because I'm a woman?"
"Because you're not in a position of command. I fought like hell to get where I am. Now that I've arrived, I miss the fight."
She nibbled her lower lip for a few seconds. On another woman, the action might have suggested uncertainty. On her, it suggested she needed to gnaw on something and she hadn't decided if he'd be worth the effort.
"So if you don't plan to kill the werewolf," she said finally, "what will you do?"
"Catch and release."
"What the --?" She glared at him. "You do that with fish, not a proud creature like a werewolf."
"My point exactly. Capturing someone with the strength and speed of a wolf and the intellect of a human being is the ultimate challenge."
"Not to mention the werewolf's jaws and teeth," she said.
"I know it'll be dangerous. That's a major part of the appeal."
She ran her fingers along the length of a pen sitting on her desk. Somehow, his cock felt the caress. "You have a death wish."
Actually, death was about the last thing on his mind right now, unless she meant what the French called the little death. Finding out what went on under her sweater ranked far above a trip to the Pearly Gates. Did she wear a bra, or did her breasts peak beneath the cable knit on their own? How long would it take him to make her wet enough to dampen the leggings between her thighs? Still, this was business, and he had to get his libido under control.
"Believe me, I'm not planning on dying for a long time if I can manage it. Just tell me if you can design a werewolf." He reached into his coat pocket to remove the papers he'd brought with him. "I have the specifications --"
"I don't need specs," she interrupted. "I don't have to design anything for you."
He paused, his fingers on the plans. "You're refusing the job?"
"I don't have to design a werewolf for you. I only need to find one willing to put up with... that is, to agree to fulfilling your wish."
"Find a..." he sputtered. "What in hell are you talking about?"
"Werewolves exist, Jared."

Trace Canaan split away from the group of young wolves, taking a narrow, winding path to his favorite spot at the top of Moon Mountain. Reaching the crest, he leaped onto a granite slab overlooking the valley.
Far below the yelps and yips of the wolves were replaced by friendly shouts and peals of laughter, telling Trace his friends had reached the spring fed pool at the base of Shawnee Falls, the best spot to skinny-dip on a hot summer night.
Instead of joining the nocturnal fun, Trace wanted to watch the full moon rise over his beloved mountains one last time before reporting for duty. He lifted his muzzle, breathing in the scent of the old-growth trees, the wildflowers and the earth, the home of his pack for over a thousand years.
As the moon peeked above the tall peaks, Trace shifted, taking pleasure in the stretch of muscle, sinew and bone, the change in size and shape, the morphing of wolf to man. Naked, he sat on the cool granite, leaned back, bracing his weight on outstretched arms.
The soft thud of paws on the earthen path alerted him he wasn't alone. Nose quivering, he recognized the scent.
He bent one knee to shield his privates as Avana Vasson jumped onto the slab. Trace knew she was out well beyond her father's curfew.
"Do you know what time it is?" he teased, aware of her ongoing efforts to thwart her parents' rigid rules. At nearly eighteen years of age, Avana hungered for freedom, a break from her protective parents. Trace reached out and grabbed her at the base of the neck, the gesture a reminder of their unique bond.
Six years ago she'd fallen into the swift moving river that snaked through the valley. He'd seen her fall, jumped in after her and grabbed her by the scruff of the neck. He'd nearly drowned in the process of getting them both to shore and since that day Trace and Avana had been close friends.
He eased his grip and slid his fingers deep into her thick coat, white fur tipped in black. She responded to his caress, leaning into his body and rubbing her muzzle against his bare shoulder. Something stirred deep inside him. He glanced at her, admiring the line of her muzzle, the slope of her head and long ears. Her beauty stole his breath.
He'd spent the last four years at an out-of-state college. During his absence Avana had slipped into her teen years and over time his feelings had evolved from friendship to desire. Each visit the attraction had grown stronger, but he'd said nothing, done nothing to enlighten her. He gently pushed her away and dropped his hand. Although he'd worked hard and finished his business degree, Trace still faced two years of active military duty.
Another two years away from the pack; two long years to wait.
Avana shifted, her wolven form morphing into a willowy body with high breasts, gently curved hips and long legs. Although nudity was common in pack life, Trace forced himself not to stare. To look was to want.
"It's too hot to sleep." Avana sat down beside him, her bare thigh brushing his. "I didn't expect anyone to be here. Party's down at the swimming hole."
"I like it up here."
She lifted her long hair, twisting it into a thick knot at her nape. Leaning back, she mimicked his position, firm breasts pointing at the moon. "I wish you didn't have to go."
"I'll miss you, too."
At dawn, he'd leave. The pack elders considered it an honor that he'd been accepted to join a paranormal military unit. Upon completion of two years of service the elders would pay off his student loans.
"I envy you. If my father has his way, I'll mate with the were of his choice and die here in the mountains."
Trace reminded himself to keep his eyes on her face, but still his gaze drifted south. "And if you get your way?"
"I'd go to the city and never come back."
He shook his head. "You love it here, it's our land. Look at that moon and tell me your heart isn't here."
"You can see the moon from the city."
He worried that she'd find city life suited her, that she'd fall for some sophisticated human with a large bank account. "What about the pack? You have a responsibility to the ancestors."
"I don't want my father and the elders to choose my mate. I want -- What do you care? You're leaving." She sprang to her feet and looked up at the moon. "You went away to college and now you're going off-planet. I have to stay here in the isolation of the mountains and take virtual classes."
Unable to handle her bare backside inches from his face, Trace rose and placed a hand on her shoulder. He understood her father wanted to preserve an ancient bloodline, but pedigree alone wasn't enough. Only an accomplished were would be considered a fit mate for Avana. Needing to improve his prospects and make himself a viable candidate, Trace had chosen a path that demanded he leave pack land. If he stayed, she'd be forever beyond his reach.
"Two years isn't so long," he lied, utterly aware of the silky feel of her flesh beneath his fingers.
She shook her head, her pale hair shimmering in the moonlight. "I was hoping you'd still be here for my birthday party."
Avana loved music and Trace knew she wanted the Twek. Capable of holding a thousand recordings, the tiny device fit into the ear. Despite the outrageous price he'd pulled funds from his meager savings and purchased the Twek, arranging for delivery on her special day. Her father might frown upon the non-traditional gift, but Avana would love it. "Look at the moon and make a wish. If I can, I'll give it to you."
She lifted her face to the moon, then she turned and faced him. "I made two wishes, but I want one of them right now."
"Okay."
"Kiss me."
