Happy Halloween!

Hey, y'all!

Just dropping in to say happy Halloween!

I love this time of year. Even in Texas, things are starting to cool off, and all the little munchkins are running amok in their costumes. My bassets are going to be a bee and flapper. If I can get pictures, I will post them on my personal blog, but they sure aren't loving costumes.

Anyhoo, I also love the creepy stories at this time of year! Spooktaculars, Spookapaloozas, the 13 Days of Halloween on AMC... Yum

Naturally, since I write for Changeling, I do a lot of paranormal stuff. I am even now hard at work on a zombie chicken story for a free read.

In the meantime, y'all should check out Keeping Score: One Up. It's on ARE now as well as the Changeling site.

It has demon hunters. Who doesn't love a man with a sword?

Check it out here!

Also, comment today to have a chance at a Halloween gift pack that includes and awesome dancing werewolf and a GC to Rainbow Ebook!

Happy Great Pumpkin Day!

Tasty Tuesday -- Chowdah

Chowdah

I should warn you I have strong opinions on chowdah (chowder to most of the world). Although I was born in Queens and lived there until I was 10, I was largely raised by my maternal grandmother, the real Alice Gaines. I was named after her, and I took her name as my pen name.

My grandmother was from Massachusetts, and she taught us New England ways. We also lived for a long time in Connecticut. Old time New Englanders look on all things New York with some suspicion. When we’d see someone driving erratically or too fast, we’d nod knowingly and comment, “New York driver.” Similarly, we don’t consider that clam and tomato soup chowdah or even chowder. Chowdah is white. It has milk in it. Period. End of discussion.

You’ll notice that my recipe has no thickening agent. Not all soup has to be thick. Frankly, I’d rather taste clams than flour. Besides, there’s only enough broth to cover the potatoes and clams. You won’t find five or six clam pieces floating in a sea of white. It’s a very hearty soup, even if you can’t stand a spoon in it.

Traditionally, chowdah contains salt pork and is cooked in layers in a big pot. My grandmother’s version used canned claims, making it very easy and quick to make. I’ve substituted bacon for the salt pork to make it even easier.

2 small cans (or one large) chopped clams
1/2 medium onion
1 medium potato
three slices of bacon (or one or two thick slices)
clam broth, fish broth, lobster broth, crab broth, or water
milk, cream, or half-and-half
butter

Drain clams, reserving liquid. Slice the onion-half thinly. In a heavy pot cook the bacon until crisp. Drain on paper towels and discard all but about 1 Tbs bacon fat. Add 1 Tbs butter to the fat, melt, and then add the onions and cook until translucent. Don't brown.

Peel and dice potato. Add potato to the onions and enough reserved clam liquid and/or broth just to cover. Cook just until potato is tender. Add clams and crumbled up bacon. Add "enough" milk or cream to make the chowdah white. Add another pat of butter and allow it to melt. Heat gently (don't boil) until it's the temperature you want. Check carefully for salt and pepper (clam broth is salty). Eat.

Saturday Book Diver Interviews Luc Moline from The Air I Breathe by Megan Slayer

Hello! Welcome to the Saturday Book Diver. Each weekend I magically dive into fictional worlds for interviews with unique and sexy characters.

Tonight I'm in the hotel room of Luc Moline from the band Glow. Despite long hours on the road during this grinding tour, Luc appears relaxed as he lounges on a plush couch, sipping from a glass of wine. He's wearing leather pants and a T-shirt that shows off his muscular arms. With his dark hair and sexy eyes, he's even more handsome in person than on video or in pictures. Unfortunately for single guys out there, rumor has it that his heart is taken.

He watches me with discerning eyes and I feel a bit apprehensive. There's an underlying sadness to this guy who appears to have everything -- fantastic looks, talent, and success.

SBD: Hi, Luc. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me tonight.

Luc: I'm glad to be here. Always happy to talk to a lovely lady. Thanks for having me.

SBD: [Normally I remain impartial, but I can't help being charmed by this guy.] I know you've had tons of interviews that focus on music and Glow. Tonight I'd like to get a bit more personal. How would you describe yourself? Tell us what kind of a man you are.

Luc: On stage I'm very extroverted. I like being the center of attention. But when I'm off stage, I'm more low-key. I like to be comfortable and exist. When I'm at home, I'm happy to veg out and just be. If I'm working on music, then look out. I'm really focused and grumpy. But hey, music is my second love.

SBD: I've heard you're close friends with Taygan, a wind elemental. Will you confirm or deny that and possibly explain exactly what a wind elemental is?

Luc: I'm very much involved with him. He's one of my best friends. But you also asked what a wind elemental is. He can garner the wind. Yep. And when he's turned on, Tay whips wind through the room. It can get rather chilly, but in the midst of sex, it's refreshing to have that breeze. And yes, that's my wicked grin.

SBD: [The temperature in the room just shot up and I resist the urge to fan myself.] Since we're being candid, what happened between you guys at Christmas?

Luc: I asked Santa for my heart's desire. He gave me Tay. We came together and it was like a beautiful explosion. Sexy, hot, and disastrous. Makes me love Christmas even more.

SBD: What's one thing about Tay that you find irresistible?

Luc: His smile. The guy tries to be all sly, but when he smiles, I know exactly what he's thinking.

SBD: Is there anything in particular you'd like readers to know before I leave you to get some rest?

Luc: It was printed in a fan magazine that I write music in the bath tub or in the nude. While those both sound like fun, neither is true. I write music with my clothes on because I am more than likely in a social situation. My attention span is all over the place so I'm constantly thinking about what I can put into a new song. So I might be at a restaurant and writing music. Can't really be at a restaurant in the buff.

SBD: [How can you not love this guy?] Thank you for that glimpse at the songwriting part of your career, Luc. Would you share one of your favorite excerpts from The Air I Breathe?

Luc:

"Don't you go to sleep on me. I'm nowhere near through with you."

Luc's voice ripped Tay from his haze. "Sorry."

"Scoot forward." Luc tapped Tay's shoulder. "Lemme get behind you."

Tay complied, not totally sure how he managed to move. Luc smoothed his hands around Tay's ribs and pulled him into the curve of his body.

"You're not much warmer." Luc rested his chin on Taygan's shoulder. "Start from the beginning and don't leave a thing out."

Taygan sagged into Luc and closed his eyes. Tears pricked behind his eyelids. The beginning. Try about the time he'd first met Lucien Moline. Tay sighed. "It's complicated."

"I like complicated. It's my best riff." Luc rubbed a washcloth over Tay's chest. "Talk to me."

"Things started to go off the rails when I first met you." Taygan swallowed past the lump in his throat. "My world spun out of control."

"I'm a bad influence," Luc cooed. "You like it."

"I do, but I don't understand it. I don't." The words poured out faster than Taygan could dam them up. "When we're together, I'm stronger. My element is lighter and I'm happy. But then it gets too strong or heavy or whatever it is, and I can't stand it. I have to move. I want to stay and have our life right here, but I can't control it. Deep down in my soul, I don't want to leave you. I want to be right here in your arms, and every time I have to leave, I know you're sick of me going. One day you're not going to take me back, and it scares me shitless." Tears streamed down his cheeks and his voice cracked. "I'm scared."

Luc drew a long breath and let it out slowly. He wrapped his arms around Taygan, squeezing tight. "Can I at least help you figure out the riddle you keep talking about?"

"By all means." Taygan threaded his fingers with Luc's and rested his forehead on Luc's temple. "Last Christmas was the strongest I've ever felt."

Chuckling, Luc ground his pelvis against Tay's ass. "We've got part of this thing figured out."

"We?" Taygan's cock thickened, and heat washed through his body. Trust

Luc to truly warm him through and through. Goddess, he loved Luc.

Luc nodded. "We have the best time in bed -- or in this case the bathtub."

SBD: Luc, thank you again for taking time out of your tour to give fans this sneak peek into your life.

A bodyguard escorts me out of Luc's room and as I reach the door I glance over my shoulder for one more look at the fascinating musician. I see him talking to an adorable sandy-haired, blue-eyed man who must have been waiting in the adjoining room. It seems that I've unfortunately missed the chance to talk to Taygan. Hopefully another time.

Tasty Tuesday: Grandma's Lefse

Welcome to Tasty Tuesdays, where Changeling authors share their favorite specialty recipes.

Hi Cyberspace, if you don't know what the heck lefse is you've been missing out.  When I eat this delicious potato flatbread, it reminds me of my childhood holidays. Spread on a thick layer of butter and sprinkle this with sugar for a wonderful treat.  My family has always enjoyed this with white sugar, but my husband’s clan insists on brown sugar. This is also great with meatballs and gravy rolled up inside.  The biggest key to success is putting the potatoes in a ricer and making the sheet as thin as possible.

5 c. prepared russet potatoes
1 ½ tsp. salt
5 T. canola oil
2 c. flour

Cook about 5 pounds of potatoes; drain well.  Put through a ricer, Measure, and then chill. Add salt, oil, and enough flour to roll the dough easily.  Roll as thin as possible before baking on a preheated lefse or pancake griddle.  Turn to prevent scorching.

Swan Lake And Dancing For Her Demon

Larissa, the virgin heroine of Dancing For Her Demon, is a ballet dancer. Although she doesn’t dance professionally, she is trained in ballet and continues to dance. I’m not a dancer but I do love ballet.

The first ballet the hubby and I saw was the classic Swan Lake. The hubby gave me tickets to the ballet as an early birthday present. We were both working crazy hours and multiple jobs, and the only time we could find to attend a performance was during the week, after our day job. We were exhausted but we dressed up, ate a fast slice of pizza for dinner, and headed to the ballet.

We settled into the cheap seats, in the last row, right against the wall. Once the ballet started, the dancing mesmerized me. I found the lack of singing and talking a bit eerie (I’m a writer, my life revolves around words) but the movement was amazing.

Half an hour into the ballet, my dear exhausted hubby was leaning forward in his chair, snoring loudly. I was a little embarrassed until I looked down the row. Every second attendee was sleeping! I caught the eye of the ballet loving man beside my hubby and we shared a laugh because his boyfriend was fast asleep also. My hubby later told me it was the best sleep he’d had in months!

Once the hubby woke up, he had me in stitches, laughing (also a no-no at the ballet). The core story is a Prince falls in love with a white swan. My hubby’s comment? “These interspecies romances never work out.” The Prince is tricked into mistaking a black swan for his white swan. My hubby’s comment? “And you think I don’t pay attention. His swan is a completely different color and he didn’t notice!”

We’ve seen ballets since Swan Lake but this was our first and will always have a special place in my heart.

DANCING FOR HER DEMON
By Cynthia Sax
Now Available From Changeling Press

Dancing For Her Demon

Although Larissa is a virgin, she knows exactly whom she wants. She wants Julian. Her father's right-hand demon, however, still views her as a child. Determined to provoke the rage demon's darker passions, Larissa struts on stage at a local strip club and shows him how grown up she really is.
Julian has spent years proving he is the right mate for Larissa. He has one task left. He must go to a strip club and subdue a rival demon. Then Larissa takes the stage, the audience goes wild, and all of Julian's careful planning is blasted to bits by the heat of desire.

Tasty Tuesday: Chicken and/or Egg Salad

Chicken and or Egg Salad

This recipe can be made with either chicken breast meat or 8 hard boiled eggs, depending on which you prefer. For chicken salad use approximately 1 lb. of chicken (preferably white meat) chopped into a fairly fine consistency.

In a medium size bowl add 2 heaping tablespoons of real mayonnaise and mix in 1/4 teaspoon of parsley, celery, and 1 teaspoon of sweet relish. Next add salt and pepper to taste and 1/4 teaspoon of brown mustard. Mix well and refrigerate for at least 12 hours. To make egg salad simply substitute 8 hard boiled eggs (in place of the chicken) chopped into fine pieces. Same amount of other ingredients as in chicken salad and refrigerate same time. Serve either on a large leaf of lettuce or serve on a bun, also makes a terrific sandwich with light toasted bread.

The refrigeration time may be by-passed but it really does make a better flavor when the ingredients are given proper time to set and develop together.

Bless,

The excitement of coming soon

As an author, there's this amazing feeling when you wrap up a book and send it off to your publisher. Oh, it may not be the cigarette and Dom Perignon, a la Paul Sheldon in Stephen King's Misery, but the satisfaction is very real, whether it's a novel or a short story.

Even more happy-making is when you get through the edit and proof process and see your book pop up on the coming soon.

Look at my new Keeping Score book on the coming soon!

The first one was such a blast to write! I love my shifters, but demon hunters have endless possibilities, and all the snark and hot sex and angst and..

One Up is here

The next thing will be a cover! Book two is in the works, but book three will be about a sexy new hunter clawing his way up the ladder. What do y'all think I ought to put on that?

Tasty Tuesdays: Passionate Fruit Pizza by Anne Kane

Get this and lots of other fabulous recipes in ARe's FREE cookbook: Passionate Cooks!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ cup cold butter – cubed
  • ¾ cup cold milk
  • available fresh fruit – strawberries, peaches, blueberries, plums, pears or whatever you can find. Canned pears work really well too.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or to taste
  • several dabs of jam – any flavour

Directions

  1. Mix dry ingredients together with a pastry blender or in a food processor until pea sized chunks are formed

  1. Add milk  and mix until it just holds together

  1. Spread a sheet of plastic wrap out on a cookie pan and put  ball of dough on it

  1. Chill for ten to fifteen minutes

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees

  1. Roll out dough to ½ inch thick in any shape you want. I like to make it oblong to fit on the cookie sheet.

  1. Dab with butter. Slice fruit to approximately a quarter inch thick and spread out on top of dough.

  1. Sprinkle with sugar, and dab jam hither and yon. It will melt to form a glaze.

  1. Bake at  450 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or yogurt.

Here's a sexy but brutal fairy (complete with severed, shrunken human head and whip!) that I doodled and made into an, "Oh, really?" icon. Feel free to download it and use it with my permission on your website or blog. Her name is Slay and she comes from the same world as Sinn in my upcoming book, Nobody Rides for Free. Tasty Tuesday- Gluten Free Patty Melts

Hey y'all! Guess what I'm having for supper tonight?

Serves 4

4 hamburger patties, or 1lb hamburger meat split into 4 patties (if you can afford it, go grass fed)

8 slices Udi's Gluten Free whole grain bread

1 large sweet onion (Vidalia or 1013 work great)

4 slices provolone cheese (Swiss is also good)

2 tbsp butter

Instructions

Slice onion in half through middle, then turn each half flat side down on board and cut half-moon shaped slices, thin as you can get them. Heat large skillet to medium-high, add a few thin slices of butter and a drizzle of olive oil. Cook onions for 5 minutes on medium-high without burning, then turn heat down to medium or slightly less, and continue to cook onions, stirring occasionally, until onions reach a deep, caramel color.

Set onions aside to cool, and grill or pan-fry your hamburgers to doneness of choice. I like a nice medium burger.

While hamburgers cook, toast bread. Gluten free bread requires toasting to hold up to the sandwich. Use the rest of the butter to butter one side of each piece of toast. Chop cooked onions into bite-sized pieces.

Melt cheese on top of hamburgers as they cook the last minute. Then assemble patty melts with two slices of bread, butter on the outside, patties, onions and cheese on the inside. Grill or pan fry each sandwich for 30-60 seconds to brown butter on outside of bread.

Serve hot.

Now off to make supper!

Tasty Tuesdays: Low Carb Breakfast Muffins

Welcome to Tasty Tuesdays, where Changeling authors share their favorite specialty recipes.

From Shelby's Kitchen:
Low Carb Cinnamon Flax Seed Breakfast Muffins
Five minutes prep time
25 to 35 minutes bake time
Net Carbs app 1 per muffin (Based on a 6 well large breakfast muffin tin)

Ingredients
1 cup golden flax meal (zero net carbs)
1/2 cup almond meal (6 net carbs)
1/2 cup flax seeds (zero net carbs)
1/2 cup splenda (zero net carbs)
2 tbsp cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for a spicier muffin)
1 tbsp baking powder
pinch salt
1 cup unsweetened almond milk (1 net carb)
4 large eggs (zero net carbs)

Preheat oven to 350º
Generously grease a large muffin tin with olive oil or butter.
Mix dry ingredients with a large spoon or whisk. Make a well in the middle and pour in the almond milk, then add the eggs. Stir thoroughly. Batter should not be lumpy or have dry spots. Unlike wheat flour, you won't need to use a blender to get the batter relatively smooth. Batter will have a slightly gelatinous texture. Spoon batter into muffin tin. Muffin wells should end up about 2/3 rds full.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350º for a 6 muffin tin; about 25 minutes for a mini-muffin/cupcake tin.

Note that the flax meal will absorb the milk and make the batter very stiff if you let it stand in the fridge, so I don't recommend making this up ahead of time.
