"Patricia, he's cute," Ivonne said with a smile.
The women gazed at a photo of the man Patricia had agreed to marry. He wore his dark blond hair short and even in the picture his wide-set blue eyes pierced her soul. His angular face, with its strong nose and neatly trimmed beard, was both handsome and rugged. Though his body wasn't visible in the photo, Patricia knew it to be tall and well-muscled. In his Prowleryn form he looked like a strange but compelling combination of a lion and a tiger -- long and powerful with huge paws and a dark gold coat faintly streaked with brownish stripes.
Patricia's stomach tightened with a combination of apprehension and attraction. Ivonne's description of Demitri was the world's biggest understatement. Her betrothed wasn't merely cute. He was the most gorgeous hunk Patricia had ever seen, and that's what bothered her. She knew she'd jumped at Demitri's proposal for stupid reasons. He was the worst possible choice for a mate, but he aroused her like no man she'd ever met.
Turning her attention to Patricia, Ivonne studied her carefully and finally said, "There's one thing I have to ask. How does it feel, knowing you're going to marry a man you've never met?"
"Oh, we've met."
Ivonne lifted an eyebrow. "Really? Kane is under the impression this is a traditional Prowleryn matched marriage."
Prowleryns, a race of shapeshifting cats, now lived secretly among the humans who had hunted them to near extinction. Patricia had grown up among the Prowleryns of Colorado, daughter of the tribal leader. As a rare Prowleryn female, she had been raised to understand that her duty was to marry and mate in the customary way, but Patricia had other plans. She had learned not only to appreciate humans, but to enjoy living as a modern American woman. That meant selecting her own mate when she was ready. At least that's what she'd thought until she'd met Demitri.
"It'll be traditional all right. Everything about the bastard is traditional." Patricia sighed deeply. It felt good to finally talk about this. She'd been hiding her obsession with Demitri for so long. "He and I met a year ago. His tribal leader had a meeting with my father."
"But you never told Kane?"
Kane, a Prowleryn male who had come to live with her tribe ten years ago, was like an older brother to Patricia, and she considered him her best friend. A few years ago he had moved to Alaska to open a resort. He and Ivonne had recently fallen in love and Patricia was happy for them. At least they had chosen each other with no strings attached. She almost envied Kane for this freedom.
"I thought if I came way out here to Alaska I might be able to forget about Demitri. That's the main reason I took the job as resort manager when Kane offered it."
"Patricia, if you haven't been able to get the man out of your mind for over a year, then you're making the right decision."
Patricia snorted and kicked back in the chair by the desk in the resort office. "You don't know Demitri. He's inflexible, arrogant, chauvinistic, and has no sense of humor."
"So his only positive quality is good looks?"
"Apparently," Patricia said, her voice just above a whisper. She drew a deep breath as she recalled looking into his intense blue eyes. Even after so much time had passed she could still smell his wonderful, sexy scent and feel the warmth of his callused palm against hers when they'd shaken hands. He was so tall and powerful. Patricia was a statuesque woman who spent hours exercising. She was quite strong, even for a Prowleryn female, and could even hold her own among the males on a hunt. But Demitri made her feel so feminine and --

Kane's enormous paws glided over the snow. He raced as fast as he could, then deliberately slid across the ice, a kittenish game that he wouldn't have played in the company of other Prowleryns.
Out here, no one was around to see him.
Or talk to him.
Or hunt with him.
But at least here he was his own master, unfettered by the restrictions of tribal life and the prejudices of his father's people. When he wanted to live like a Prowleryn, he came out here to indulge his shapeshifter nature alone.
Prowleryns -- an ancient race of cat shifters -- generally preferred a close-knit family setting. Kane's solitary lifestyle was only one of many traits that set him apart from others of his kind.
Most members of his tribe refused to let him forget just how different he was compared to them. The human mates some of the males had taken were treated with more value than Kane. What respect he got, he fought hard for.
He'd spent the morning hunting and part of the afternoon building a new igloo. Even his thick pelt wasn't always enough to keep him comfortable in the frigid Alaskan winter. Sometimes on cold nights he wished he had a mate to snuggle with.
Now was the time for a little fun before darkness fell and he retired to his icy dwelling. He trotted through the snow then threw himself onto his back and rolled around, his eyes closed and loud purrs of pleasure rumbling in his chest.
Then his keen hearing picked up the sound of dogs barking in the distance. He stood abruptly, his four strong legs braced apart and his ears straining.
Humans. The last thing he needed at this moment was to be seen by one of them. Not that he didn't like humans. He actually felt more comfortable in their company than with Prowleryns. Amidst the barking dogs he heard a piercing scream, the voice distinctly female. That didn't sound good.
His better judgment told him to head home and avoid any possible contact with humans while in his cat form, yet something in the woman's scream prompted him to take a closer look. It wasn't in his nature to avoid people in trouble, no matter what their species. Kane's swift yet stealthy gait and pale gray pelt were excellent camouflage, so if he was careful he had little chance of being seen.
He continued in the direction of the scream. The dogs' barking faded until he scarcely heard it and he slowed his pace. Most likely the woman had gone with them, no doubt on the back of a sled pulled by her furred slaves. He was about to turn back when in the distance he noticed what appeared to be a person lying in the snow. He caught the scent of her perfume on the freezing wind.
No more humans were in sight, nor did he see or smell any others.
Throughout the centuries humans had killed many of his kind, nearly driving them to extinction. Because of this as well as the limited number of female Prowleryns, they had chosen to mate with human females in an attempt to increase their numbers. Living among humans, he had learned that not all were wicked. At times he had seen more evil among his own kind than he had among humans.
He knew he couldn't leave this woman to certain death in the wilderness of Alaska. Again he sniffed the air and his gaze swept the area, making certain no other humans lurked among the snowdrifts. He quickened his pace and approached the woman. She pushed herself onto her hands and knees.
Lovely brown eyes fixed upon him and widened. She drew a sharp breath and trembled visibly, probably as much from fear as from the cold. Kane stood still, his gaze locked on hers, before she collapsed face first in the snow.
Surely he hadn't frightened her that much? Most likely she'd hurt herself falling out of the sled, for he had no doubt that's what had happened. Something told him she was new to this rough climate.
He moved closer and paused, breathing deeply as he shifted to a form somewhere between cat and man. Still covered in his thick pelt but moving on two legs instead of four, he squatted near her and checked the pulse in her neck. It was strong and steady. She didn't appear to have any broken bones, but he couldn't be sure until he examined her more closely. First he needed to get her someplace warm. Kane lifted her in his arms and headed back to his igloo.

Drew considered herself a hunter, even though she'd never killed. She was always searching for the perfect wildlife shot, which explained why at the moment she was lost in a South American jungle.
If she'd paid closer attention to her guide and less to the almost magical pull of her camera lens, she wouldn't be in such danger right now. Panic nearly set in, but she forced herself to remain calm and focus on finding some indication of which way to travel.
She heard a cry -- something between a feline shriek and a human bellow. Her heart skipped a beat. Dangerous animals stalked this wilderness, yet she'd never heard any beast sound quite like this.
Over and over the cries tore through the jungle. Drew sensed desperation in that voice. Overcome by curiosity, she ventured toward, rather than away from the sound. She pushed herself through a tangle of vegetation into a clearing. Her eyes widened.
Buried chest deep in quicksand struggled a creature unlike anything she'd ever seen. Its face looked both human and feline. Though built like a man, it was covered in a leopard pelt. Its sinewy arms and long, clawed fingers stretched toward the overhanging branch of a nearby tree, but it couldn't quite reach it. The harder it fought for freedom, the deeper it sank.
Torn between pity and fear, Drew realized this beast would soon die a horrible death. It paused for a moment, its chest heaving. Clearly it was losing strength. She had no way of knowing how long it had been trapped there, fighting for freedom.
At that moment it caught sight of her. Drew momentarily forgot to breathe. Even from a distance she saw keen intelligence and sensitivity in its greenish-yellow eyes.
It didn't utter a sound, but something in its expression told her that even if it could speak it wouldn't ask for her help. If this creature understood pride, if it sensed its own mortality, she couldn't leave it to die.
She was probably risking her life. Once free, this creature could tear her apart. Its -- his -- powerfully muscled body, clawed hands and gleaming fangs marked him as a predator. She didn't have a weapon to defend herself, yet she approached.
He watched her warily.
"Easy," she said, her heart pounding. She slipped off her backpack and gear and placed it on the ground. "I just want to help you. Can you understand me?"
Except for a low growl, he didn't reply but stared at her.
She stepped closer, careful not to get too near the pit. How could she reach him?
She pulled off her belt and tossed it to him. He grabbed hold and she tried to heave him out. Lord he was heavy, and with the pull of the quicksand she wasn't sure she could free him. He tried pulling himself out, but only succeeded in dragging her closer to the pit.
"No, don't!" she said and released the belt.
He fell deeper into the quicksand. A low moan of despair escaped his throat. Again their gazes locked and the expression in his eyes tugged at her heart.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm sorry. Maybe I can bring the branch closer to you."
She jumped up and after a couple of tries caught hold of the overhanging branch. She pulled down as hard as she could while the creature in the pit stretched his long arms upward. He caught hold of the branch and it creaked beneath his weight. Inch by torturous inch he dragged himself higher, his claws sinking into the bark. The branch looked close to snapping.
Drew bit her lower lip. He had to make it this time. He had to!
As he emerged from the quicksand, she stared in fascination. Beneath the smooth, leopard like pelt, he had the form of an athletic man -- a lean waist, long legs of chiseled muscle, and a tight, perfect ass. He was also completely naked.
Finally he reached the side of the pit. Only when he grasped her ankle did she realize she'd stayed far too close to this creature.
Now that he had her, what was to stop him from tearing her to pieces? He looked partly human, but would he react like one?
She gave a sharp cry as he tugged her to the ground. Instead of harming her, he collapsed on top of her, still panting from his narrow escape, his big, rock-hard body half draped over hers.
Drew lay frozen, her heart pounding. Beneath the layer of sand and mud, his pelt felt smooth and his body quite warm.
After a few moments, his breathing evened out and he lifted his head to stare into her eyes.
Drew swallowed, unsure of what to do. She wondered if he could talk. There was only one way to find out. "Can you understand me?" she asked.
He didn't reply, but continued watching her. Those wide set greenish eyes were intelligent. She sensed he knew what she said but was unable or unwilling to respond, at least not in words.
He pushed himself to his knees, and when she tried to rise as well, he placed a hand on her stomach.
Drew's pulse raced and she remained still, half raised on her elbows. She glanced at the large, hairy hand, waiting for his claws to tear through her clothes and flesh. Though firm, his touch didn't hurt and after a moment his hand moved slowly up her torso. As it passed between her breasts, her nipples tightened and tingled. Finally he paused, his hand curved lightly around her throat.
"You're not going to hurt me, are you?" she continued softly, her voice steadier than she felt.
