Bunny Tails: Hare Today(c) 2009 Camille Anthony
* * *
Xen, Usher, Brax and I joined with the pack hunt. Being free to range the land in our true form was an unimaginable adrenaline rush. Nothing compared to coursing far after game, taking down the prey and drinking its hot, bubbling blood, ripping into the tender flesh of the fresh kill.
My three lieutenants and I took down the first stag of the night, tearing into the steaming carcass to get at the prize -- the still-beating heart. I claimed the first bite, careful to leave a portion for the other three. We’d shared the hunt, we would share the reward. Howling our triumph and joy, we called the others, willing now to share the good fortune of plentiful meat.
We flushed out a goodly brace of hares, most of which we shared with the orphans and elderly among the People since we’d be carrying none home to Ouida. For some reason, she wouldn’t eat hare meat, claiming the relationship with them she felt as a result of what she’d gone through last winter.
Instead, we set aside a few hefty hunks of venison, wrapped in a portion of the deerskin. She’d eat that, but not before burning it over flames until she’d practically ruined the meat. I allowed her to retain some human foibles because I loved her, but I knew I’d soon have to begin weaning my female from her unnatural habits.
Alphas don’t usually carry packs, but Brax and Usher were willing to be our beasts of burden since it was for Ouida. It helped that they were beta to Xen and me. Xen and I shifted long enough to fashion pouches and halters of sorts from broad leaves and twigs. Once we finished, we relaxed into our true forms and hurried home, baying joyously as our paws ate up the distance in seemingly no time.
She was waiting for us on the porch, her dark skin gleaming under the light of the full moon. Her teeth -- a wide blunt edged row of startling white -- were bared in her human expression of smiling and she’d already launched herself from the wooden platform before we shifted into bipeds.
“Wait until we can catch you,” I cautioned, rushing to intercept her before her round, plump bottom hit the dirt. I eased her down gently, waiting for her feet to touch the ground before looping my arms about her waist.
She went up on tiptoe to kiss me and laughed. “You guys always catch me, though I can’t understand why you haven’t put your backs out hefting this big butt of mine around.”
Xen came up behind her, growling at her words. He cupped her ass and squeezed until her soft flesh stood up around his fingers. “I love this beautiful ass and I’ll hear nothing negative about it, or I’ll be spanking it as I fuck you.”
I bit back a snarl, wishing I’d thought to say that when Ouida turned bright eyes on Xen and flung an arm out to drag him in for a hearty press of lips. “Sometimes you know just what to say to make my day!”
I tightened my arms around her, drawing her attention away from that damned smooth wolf. “I’m about to make your night.”
“Oh yeah?” She tipped her chin up and mock scowled at me, looking like an adorable pup trying to play grown up.. “You and what army?”
“Usher and Brax reporting for duty… Sir!” The two stepped up to us, running bold hands over our female’s hips and flanks, down her legs. “We’ll gladly take kitchen detail.”
She looked a question. “Kitchen detail?”
Usher skimmed a hand up her leg, ended with his palm covering her thatch of dense curls. “Where the heat is.”
“Oh.” Ouida’s breasts quivered as her breathy sigh ghosted on the night air. Her thighs trembled, knees relaxing as Usher rotated his hand over her mound, sent a finger questing through the swollen labia to sweep her dainty channel. A sharp, sweet aroma burst from her skin, inundating the area with her arousal, causing all our nostrils to flare. We soaked in her beckoning scent, our cocks rising in response of the powerful aphrodisiac.
Still holding her by the ass, Xen flexed his fingers, pulling the globes of her butt apart to reveal her puckered anus. “I’ve got the rear covered… to make sure there’s no retreat.”
She blushed. The wash of color stained her cheeks a rosy dusky brown while generating a heat that radiated off her flesh, painting the night air with ribbons of hot fuchsia lust.
“I suppose that leaves me guarding the front lines,” I quipped, dipping my head to capture a taut blackberry nipple between my teeth. The sharp nip I gave her made her squeal and tremble.

Fire. Water. Earth. Air. Each has its own aggressions. Each has its own passions. Put them in human form, and nature explodes.
It all begins with Pyros, the God of Fire, and the only woman who has ever touched him. But even Allison's love isn't enough to prevent mayhem when fire unleashes its wrath. Water follows with its Goddess, Jada, sheltering the lost city of Atlantis, and earth with Talon and all the strength and stability of a mountain. Finally, Angelina gently works with air to complete the circle of the elemental magic they all possess.
Once the destruction of fire is set in motion, it will take all the passion and love each possesses, along with the mortals and magical creatures who love them, to complete a story ages in the making.
This collection contains the previously released novellas in The Elementals series: God of Fire, Goddess of Water, God of Earth, and Goddess of Air.

Geysers exploded and spewed all over Yellowstone National Park, some with deadly effects. The scientist in her called them geothermal events, but Allison knew it was something more -- a prelude of what was to come. The fire beneath the surface struggled to dominate the earth, disrupting the balance. Angry waves of energy almost overwhelmed her, and she reached out with her being toward the massing force.
Immediately, something lashed out at her. A sharp, blinding pain burning through her head, driving her to her knees. It was as if her brain were boiling. Allison screamed but somehow held firm to the flows of fire swelling toward the surface. She "pushed" with all her might, but it wasn't enough. She couldn't prevent the explosion. A lifetime of studying this place and volcanology told her the sequence of events was all wrong, but there was no denying what her other senses told her.
Yellowstone was going to erupt.
Knowing she couldn't outrun the imminent pyroclastic flows, Allison embraced the power, choosing to die trying to save as many people as she could rather than trying to save only herself.
Just as the power rushing through her became too much, he was there, struggling to contain the fire as well. Instinctively, she added her strength to his, redirecting her energy to the greater presence of power. It wasn't long before she was swamped with the lust and heat she had come to associate with his presence. It started out as a painful, burning blend but settled almost immediately into a sexual urge more powerful than any she had ever experienced.
Pushing everything to the back of her mind, she concentrated all her strength on giving as much energy to the man as she could. He snatched it like a lifeline. Relief, lust, curiosity, and desire all warred within him. His presence always eased her burden, but she had never known him to struggle, and she had never known so completely that her presence added strength to his.
She thought this would be the time that this being of such immense power would assert his dominance over her, but he simply brushed her cheek with a mental touch and continued his efforts to control the fire with her help.
It wasn't long before the magma screamed, sending one last burst of energy in an effort to escape. The energy spike should have killed Allison, but the male presence shielded her from the worst of the rush. Allison was awed by his control over the fire, the most violent of the elements. Once he had full control of her added strength, he scattered the power surges in a thousand directions, dissipating the energy until it was impotent.
An enraged bellow echoed in Allison's head, the last remnants of this uprising of the now contained magma. Breathing a sigh of relief, she sat on the ground and tried to focus on the mysterious being still connected to her. She had felt him with her many times throughout her life, but this was the first time she had felt an almost human side to him. She made him stronger, and she took tremendous pride in that.
His presence was soothing, like a balm applied to the sting of so much energy. He also fed the lust within her. She had never needed a man so much in her life! Her pussy dripped and throbbed in time with the pulsing of the magma, and she realized he was connected with the fire on some stronger level than even she was.
With the danger gone, his concentration focused on her. The intensity of his attention was disconcerting. She felt naked, exposed, as if he knew her every desire, every need. She couldn't help but wonder if he would be that attentive a lover.
Who are you?
His voice in her head startled her. Her response was automatic. My name is Allison.
That does not answer my question, my lovely.
His gentle reprimand held a hint of humor. I want to know who you are that you have control over fire.
I merely settle the energy, push it back. I would not call that control.
Hmm.
Allison could almost see him rubbing his chin in contemplation. We shall see. You will await me at the lake.
Will I? And if I refuse?
He chuckled. You will not. You are just as curious as I.
Touché. Fair is fair. Who are you?

Allison could almost see him puff his chest out. I am Pyros, God of Fire.

Jack, the alpha of the Northern Rockies pack, knows Destiny needs some time to come to grips with her werewolf heritage before he springs the whole mated for life thing on her.
Destiny has no intention of buying into the whole pack mentality, howl at the full moon thing. Sure, she practically drools at the sight of red meat, but that's no reason to give up her comfortable life. Besides, she already has a boyfriend, a slick up-and-coming lawyer.
But when a band of rogue werewolves move into the area, Jack can't afford to have his attention divided. He needs to convince Destiny that she belongs both in his pack and in his bed so he can concentrate on the new threat.

Destiny stared in dismay at the box in the middle of her kitchen table. Her stomach lurched, a ball of anxiety settling in the very middle of it. Gold gilt covered the small box, giving it an exotic look. An artfully tied crimson bow surrounded by curls of white lace sat cheerfully atop it, adding to the air of decadent luxury.
She knew who'd put it there, and she knew why. Jack. The Alpha of the Northern Rockies werewolf pack. The man who made her knees feel weak whenever she glimpsed him walking down the main street, or lounging at a local coffee shop. The man who'd made it plain that he intended to be her mate. The absolute last man on the face of the planet that she intended to get serious about.
No point in putting this off. Her sensitive nose could smell Jack all over the damn box. She caught the trailing lace between a thumb and forefinger and gently undid the bow, dropping the cheerful piece of ribbon on the table. Taking a deep breath, she plucked the lid off.
Her breath caught in her throat. An exquisitely detailed chocolate wolf nestled in a cushion of crushed white velvet. Every detail from the tip of its muzzle to the dominant curve of its tail was perfect. Jack had reproduced himself exactly. She knew if she turned the little wolf over, she'd find a jagged scar running along its left flank.
"I suppose I could always bite your head off." Destiny felt a wry smile tug the sides of her mouth. She jumped, startled by the sound of a loud knock on her front door. Quentin must have gotten out of court early. She hadn't expected him to show up for at least another four hours. Sweeping the ribbon up off the table, she stuffed the box and ribbon into a drawer and slammed it shut.
"Come on in, the door's open." She hoped Quentin couldn't hear the guilt in her voice. Not that she had anything to feel guilty about. Damn Jack and his fancy little chocolate creatures! She smoothed her hands down her skirt and tried to look calm.
"I know, I was just being polite." Jack strode into the room, a crooked smile on his rugged face. "You're not usually this happy to see me."
"I thought you were my boyfriend." She looked pointedly behind him as if she expected Quentin to materialize any second. "I'm expecting him to drop in after court today."
Jack ignored her reference to Quentin and gave her a toothy grin. "I intend to be a lot more than a friend, and it's been a long time since anyone referred to me as a boy." He advanced, his eyes sparkling. "Glad to hear you finally think of me that way, though, because unless my nose is deceiving me, you're going to be begging for my attention shortly."
Destiny felt a surge of color flood her cheeks and she turned away so he couldn't see her face. It mortified her to know he could smell her eagerness. "You wish." Now that was lame!
He took her by the shoulders and turned her around to face him, his touch surprisingly gentle for such a large man. "No, I know. The full moon is on Saturday. You haven't slept with that wimpy boyfriend of yours, and you're not going to if you want him to live to see Monday. A human male can't begin to satisfy your needs. I wouldn't have to lift a paw; you'd tear him apart yourself. Your frustration level is about to escalate to hellish proportions." A devilishly wicked smile curved the corner of his mouth. "Fortunately, I can help you deal with that."
He slid his tongue across her lips, and she felt fiery darts of lust flash along every nerve. He cupped the back of her head in his hand, angling it so he could thoroughly plunder her lips.
Damn, this wasn't fair. Against her better judgment, she melted against him, letting him wrap his arm around to pull her close. She could feel the thick length of his cock pressing against her belly, and she fought the urge to reach down and explore.
When Jack finally lifted his head, he didn't say a word. He didn't have to. His blue eyes gleamed with triumph.
With a twinge of regret, she squirmed out of Jack's arms and stepped back to put some distance between them. "I don't need you." She had a sneaking suspicion that might be a lie. "And I don't want you." She knew that was definitely one.
Jack just smiled, an annoying smirk that made her want to shift and attack him with teeth and claws. She had a feeling he knew that and did it on purpose. Werewolves tended to act more impulsively in wolf form, and the Alpha's influence would be stronger. "Kid yourself all you want, but that fancy-assed lawyer is not going to make you happy." His voice had a definite bite to it.
She lifted her chin defiantly and ordered her hormones to back off. She ignored his remarks about Quentin. "I need to get ready for my date tonight, so you'll have to see yourself out." She pivoted on her heel in what she hoped was a regal fashion and headed for the stairs. A cold shower might be a good idea about now. Or a run in the woods.

She needs more, and watching the Dom at a private club makes her realize exactly what’s been missing from her love life. Now, if only she can convince Miach to give it a try, maybe she really can have the perfect marriage.

Tonight was the night. Kyra smoothed the lacy negligee over her curves and hoped Miach appreciated the effort she'd put into this seduction. The sexy clothes, the painful waxing, getting her hair and nails done, and the fresh shower with an application of her sexiest perfume -- the one that usually made him purr -- should be enough to get her what she wanted. Tonight was going to be the night she managed to make her husband cut loose and get a little rough and wild in the bedroom.
The pink lace was guaranteed to get his engine revved. She left her hair loose so it curled gently down her back with a few strands artistically arranged in the front to guide his eyes to the front of the negligee and the large expanse of exposed cleavage. If her plans tonight didn't make him lose control, nothing would.
Kyra stepped out of the bathroom and looked across the room at her husband. He was already in bed with the sheets pulled up to his waist. He sat there looking very distinguished, reading the newspaper in his formal pajamas. She struck a pose, leaning one hand against the doorjamb and putting the other on her hip. With a purse of her lips, she stared at him, willing him to look at her.
As if he heard her silent summons, or felt her burning gaze, Miach looked up. His eyes widened, his lips turning up at the corners before his stodgy reserved side kicked in, wiping the grin from his face. "What are you doing, Kyra?"
"Nothing." She cringed. She would not let him talk her out of this tonight. "I just..."
"Just what?"
"I thought we could spice things up a little. They say a little variety in the bedroom is good for a marriage."
"Spice it up? Dressing like a Playboy bunny?"
"Playboy bunny? This is a very expensive silk negligee, Miach. And though I thank you for thinking I look sexy enough to be a Playboy bunny I'm certainly not dressed like one."
"Have you been reading those magazines again?" He frowned as he folded up the newspaper and placed it carefully on the nightstand next to him. Her hands itched to knock it from its neat spot on the bedside table. Everything had a place, and he certainly made sure they were always in it. Even her.
"Magazines? No --"
"Then it must have been your girlfriends. Those socialites you were talking to tonight at the Marks' residence. Did they convince you that something was missing from our sex life?"
"No!" She gasped, recoiling from him in horror. There was something missing in their sex life, but she didn't want him to know how unhappy she was. She was going to fix it without making him feel less of a man. It wasn't his fault he was stuffy and stodgy in the bedroom. She could loosen him up a little -- if she figured out what got his libido into overdrive.
"So what's got you thinking you need to spice up our love life, then?" His frown was so deep her heart started to beat faster.
She hadn't done this to upset him. She wanted him to fuck her, not keep treating her like a china doll. "Maybe I thought you'd like this. Doesn't it arouse you?"
"You arouse me, Kyra. Not your clothing. I could care less if you wore a burlap bag. I'd still desire you as much as I do now."
His words were probably meant to make her feel better, but they didn't. If she took extra care to look her best, then she wanted him to take notice. To sit up and beg. This lacy outfit was nothing like a burlap bag. It accentuated her large chest and her nice curves. Disappointment rushed through her.
"I don't like you wearing racy outfits, Kyra. You're a senator's daughter and the wife of a prominent lawyer. You can't go around looking like a two-cent whore. Stick to your nightgowns. It's better to cover your body than reveal it."
Kyra choked back a sob at his words. Tears threatened to spill down her cheeks at any minute. She was never more grateful for his need to have a dark room for sex than she was at this moment. He wouldn't even understand why she was crying, let alone that he'd just crushed her hopes and desires.
"Turn off the light and come to bed, love." His voice had softened, but that didn't change anything he'd just said. He thought she looked like a whore. If he thought a lace nightie was hookerish, then she'd never convince him to try any of the other ideas she wanted put into action. Damn, damn, double damn.

"Hey! You're Ross. Thought I'd find you here. Fantastic."
Ross plucked one iPod ear bud out and cocked his head, scoping out a man-shaped blur of color that'd skidded in from one side. "Who wants to know?"
"That's for me to know and you to find out." Whoever this guy was, and he wasn't anyone Ross had seen before at Twentysomethingtwinks.com -- this guy was someone you couldn't forget -- and he wasted no time making himself at home in the break room. He bypassed the coffee pot for the espresso machine no one except Ross knew how to work.
"Sweet. They don't spare the expense around here, huh?" The guy cracked his knuckles. "C'mon, baby. Gonna be a good girl for me?"
Ross backed away two steps. This machine had a tendency to explode and spit lukewarm espresso on anyone -- besides him -- who poked too hard at the wrong thing. "Careful."
"Bah. Technology likes me. Purr for me, sweetheart, purr."
"Good luck," Ross said, calmly confident that the espresso machine would blow up in the guy's face. Good thing the machine didn't have magnetized parts. Mr. Whoever had enough metal in his laddered earrings, nose stud and chin stud for a nasty accident to happen if he got too close to anything electric. Solid black tribal tattoos swirled down his arms, starkly vivid against the freckled fairness of his complexion. Eye-wateringly neon green hair that looked like someone had wielded a weed-whacker while blindfolded to style only added to the overall impression -- somewhere between dangerous and certifiable. "And yeah, I'm Ross. Who are you?"
"An excellent question. I am a hundred different things, all rolled into one. I'm a bitch, I'm a lover -- aha, not bad, made you laugh." He seemed to know exactly what he was doing, flipping switches, coaxing the machine to life. With a gurgling rush and a crunching grind, the espresso machine came alive, the smell of rich roast coffee emanating in lush waves. "Hotcha. Knew I could make you talk, you sweet thing. Isn't that right?"
Ross glared at the machine. Fucking traitor. Annoyed, he asked the stranger, "Do you work here?"
"As of this morning. Welcome your new work buddy. Six foot one of nasty fun."
Yeah. That, Ross could believe. Katherine, the CEO of Steel Mill Productions, hired all kinds. Admittedly, none of them had been like... him. Everything else, from the tall to the short, the square, long, blond, brunet. Anything went as long as they were young and hung, STD-free, and not psychotic.
Katherine might have forgotten to check that last part of this guy's references. "I need a name. Otherwise I'm gonna have to call you Tattoo."
"And no one wants that. Da plane, boss, am I right?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Geez. Some respect for the classics, huh? Hey, what are you listening to?" He wiped the dangling ear bud on his shirt and popped it in. "Whoa. Alice in Chains?"
Ross tweaked the ear bud away from tall, green-haired and bizarre. "So?"
"So I'd figured you for a Travis Tritt or maybe, on an adventurous day, an N'Sync kinda guy."
"Low blow. What do you listen to, Nine Inch Nails backwards?"
"Maddox." The guy was busy filling a full Styrofoam cup with at least four shots' worth of straight, thick-as-tar espresso. Ross watched, dubious. Did anyone want this guy hyped up on that much caffeine? "Say that again. Bono Vox? As in U2?"
"Hell, no. My musical tastes run to whale songs, thunderstorms, pan pipes, that kind of thing."
"How dumb do you think I am?"
"Not half as dumb as you are pretty." The man's throat worked smoothly as he gulped the espresso down, no time lost in waiting for it to cool. Jeez. He had to have a throat made of leather. "Maddox. That's me." He held out his fist. "Give me some love."
Ross wound the ear bud cords around his iPod and slipped it in his pocket. "Thanks, but no thanks."
"Aww, now that's hardly nice, is it? Here. You want the rest of this? No? Your loss." Maddox -- what kind of name was that, anyway? -- tossed back the last drops and made a deeply satisfied Ahhhhh sound that Ross usually associated with someone on the job getting their sweet spot pounded.
Ross cleared his throat, embarrassed by the stirring in his shorts. Sounds were his weakness. A throaty moan, the grunts a guy made when he was close enough to O to taste it, a playful growl, any one of them did the trick. If Maddox could give Ross half a stock with a contented purr, Ross figured there was no shame in fearing him. "There something I can do for you, Maddox?" he asked, gruff to cover the rising blush that'd stain his cheeks.
Maddox didn't miss a bit of that. He propped his ass on the edge of the coffee table, cocky as a fox who liked the looks of this particular henhouse, and ran his tongue along his upper lip. "You so can. Matter of fact, we're gettin' busy this morning. You cool with that?"
"Wait, what?" Ross evaded Maddox's casual reach for him. "Bullshit we are. I'm here to work on some props."
"Oh, damn. Don't tell me you don't --" Maddox put on a show with pumping hips and waggling tongue. "That'd break my heart." He thumped his chest. "I might never recover. Besides, I've seen you in action on the site -- nice moves, even if you're so vanilla they probably use you to make sugar cookies -- so that'd make you a liar and I'd have to spank you."
Ross's cock stiffened. Maddox noticed. Of course he did. "Kinky. Nice. C'mon. We're wasting daylight." He braceleted Ross's wrist and pulled.

Once upon a time, there were seven ex male models turned exotic dancers, all unique and beautiful in their own way.
Adan, the fiery Spaniard, is a master of disguise. Barika, the dangerous African Flower, can make any computer obey with a mere touch of a keyboard. Shen, my delicate Chinese Warrior, speaks several languages fluently and knows how to use his pretty face to get what he wants. Blain is my temperamental Irish poet, with the soul of an artist, and the right cross of a heavyweight champ. Nalu, a large chunk of Samoan perfection, knows anything and everything about plants and poisons. Delsin has a way with numbers that is damn near erotic to watch and an understanding of the world that makes me believe his tales of being the offshoot of a rampaging Indian war-god. And then there's Raidon, my sexy Japanese Shogun. Skilled in several forms of martial arts, Raidon is the smallest -- and the most dangerous one of all.
Along with my lover Will, a hand model, we form the best detective agency ever! We take on the most obscene and dangerous cases ever to develop in the Red Light District of Baltimore. From cross-dressing vampires to dangerous warrior cults, we've seen and done it all.
Call me Shelby. And these bold and beautiful men who obey my will, most of the time, are my Angels. And here are our stories.
This collection contains the previously released novellas When Irish Eyes Are Dying, Sometimes I'm Not, and Savage.

"This is the third such death in five months. Police are baffled as to who could be doing this... and why. The Irish Eyes Conglomerate, producers of the ever-popular line of skin care, hair care, and waxing products directed toward men, is scrambling for answers, and its investors are scrambling to keep their heads above water.
"This is Denise Robberston reporting live at the site of the Fifth Annual Microbrewery Convention. Dick, back to you."
Shelby used the remote to shut down the television and its disturbing imagery.
There was silence for a full minute after the screen went black -- total silence.
She turned to face the group of men sitting around the downstairs boardroom -- okay, living room -- of Club Angels. All seven of her boys, plus her man, sat with faces twisted in an array of emotions from shock to disgust.
"Well?" she asked, feeling that maybe something had gotten through to them, that they were no longer wrapped up in their own petty concerns, realizing there were things out there that mattered, and the world didn't revolve around them.
She stood back and waited to hear about the injustice of it all.
"Oh my God!" Delsin started, with a toss of his yards-long hair.
"I know!" Adan exclaimed, his voice breathy in horror as he stared wide-eyed at the blank screen. One hand was balled in a fist pressing against his chest while the other reached for Nalu, who was just shocked into silence. Like some of the others, he stared out at nothing.
"Did you see?" Delsin whispered again, turning wide eyes to his compatriots.
"She was wearing red lipstick and blue eye shadow! Those color combinations are so not in this year!" Adan said. "And they do nothing for her complexion, like that burgundy shirt. You'd think that someone would have told her it would make her look more ruddy than she already does!"
"And who styled her hair?" Raidon chimed in. "That just makes her look bloated! If you're heavy like that, you pick a haircut that doesn't make you look like a reject from parochial Samurai school in Neo Tokyo."
The others -- even William, usually uber-intelligent -- for a model -- nodded in agreement. Of course, then he flushed in embarrassment as he took in the red that had begun to stain Shelby's cheeks.
"And that's all that you got out of it?" Shelby nearly shouted, arms akimbo, indignant that this group couldn't pull it together and see the big picture.
"That and the co-announcer should be named dick-less," Shen almost timidly announced. All the others turned to stare at him as silence filled the room. "What? I dated him before his male pattern baldness caught up to him -- but for the grace of the Lord we go." All the men sucked in a fearful, shocked breath that he would even mention that out loud. "And he got the bad toupee and the cheesy voice. He's every size queen's nightmare."
"And you still went out with him?" Adan leaned forward to get the good gossip. He ignored the auburn-highlighted black curls that fell endearingly into his face as his accent purred around the room, sending an erotic shiver down more than one back.
"I don't put out on the first or second dates," Shen responded. "Besides, I thought he was a grower, not a shower. Boy, was I wrong."
They all ah-ed in understanding as Shelby finally reached her boiling point. "Hello? Narcissi on speed? A man was killed! Now's not the time to discuss dick size! There's murder afoot!"
"And his feet are big so there goes that foot-as-a-ruler thing." Shen nodded his head with authority before smiling up innocently at his benefactress.
"I need a drink!" Shelby sighed, looking toward the heavens for help as she shook her head at the insanity that she willingly surrounded herself with.
"It's not noon yet, Shelby," William told her with a frown, taking her at her word. "But I can make you an Irish coffee." His smile was both innocent and charming. "Coffee's a morning kind of drink."
"And it's much later than that in Ireland!" Blain chimed in, all smiles and helpfulness. "And there's always a good reason for a shot of good Irish hooch!" His accent made the words seem cute even though they were the most idiotic thing she had ever heard.
"Don't you people understand?" Shelby growled. "People have died!"
"I know!" Barika sighed, looking sad. "I don't think anyone can recover from such a bad public appearance. You'd think they would have dressers or someone to help them out."
"Too much alcohol." Will's mind was still on Irish coffee in the mornings, but the others agreed.
"Turning into a lush can do that to you, make you forget your appearance and things," Shen agreed with Will, silently wondering how such an intelligent man didn't get wrinkles from thinking such deep thoughts. "It's an angle we can look into." He smiled at Will. "An alcohol breakdown's something you can really never overcome. Even with the help of Betty Ford, your image would be... irredeemable."
Solemnly, the other seven nodded, then dropped their heads, giving the fallen-from-grace reporters a moment of silence.
Giving up on trying to make them see her point of view, Shelby walked over to the low coffee table and snatched up a file folder.
"Okay, Angels, listen up." When you can't beat them, move on, was her motto. "There's a mystery to solve, and we have been hired to crack this case."
"Somebody hired us? After that Jacuzzi incident?" Will asked, shock in every line of his body, as a fire suddenly lit in his eyes. Then his eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Model or PI?"
"PI," she assured, then sighed as several masculine exclamations of delight floated around her, accompanied by hand slaps and high fives.
"And if we're all finished celebrating, I think I should inform you of the particulars."
Suddenly, they were all business, attentive as a pack of puppies fresh from obedience school.
Excellent.
"Okay, Angels, here are the facts. Irish Eyes stock's going to start to plummet, despite the fact that several important celebrities endorse them. The scandal's good for sales with the gory set, but we're all sure that won't last. They need answers and they need them fast. That's where we come in."
"We get to sleuth?" Adan asked, almost wriggling in delight in his seat.
"We get to sleuth and model and crack this case. I'm sure you are all qualified and we'll wrap this up quickly."
She smiled at the pride that beamed from her seven boys and one man. This was a good thing she was doing. It was the right thing, giving them something rewarding to do with their lives. And it was better than shaking their asses and having drunken rowdy women shove dollars down their G-strings.
"Who does what?" Barika asked, placing a calming hand on Adan's shoulder.
"Well, I have broken this down as I see fit. If there are any objections, please let me know and we'll discuss it. I'll give you my reasoning as well."
There were nods of agreement, and Shelby looked down at her file folder and began to read.
"Adan, Blain, and Raidon, you will play model this trip. No fighting, Blain, but feel free to defend any of the guys, not that they'll need it. You fit the traditional look they're going for, and you have the accent."
"I have the lilt in my voice and the face to pull it off." He smiled. "Plus, I really am Irish, Shelby! I'm authentic! Don't be forgetting that!"
She nodded, then carried on. "Adan, you can be anything so be more European. Foreign buyers relate to that and Americans find it sexy. Not only that, but while Blain distracts them, you can ferret out inside info from the people behind the scenes."
"Right, Boss," he agreed, already planning his persona for this job.
"Raidon, you're going because you can kick ass and take names." They all laughed at that and a rare blush, a flush of delight, spread out over the Japanese man's face. "That, and I need you to back up the guys, to keep anyone from getting too close, and see if you can use that brain of yours to find any underworld connections."
"Mafia, Yakuza, or Tong?" he asked. No one questioned how he would know. Hell, Shelby wasn't sure she wanted to know. But he was on their side, and that was good enough for her.
"Any and all, and if there are organized, non-familial groups too. You're good at that sort of thing."
"I'm great at that sort of thing," he corrected, and it wasn't bragging, it was just the pure and honest truth.
"Barika, I want you on computers. I want you to dig up anything you can about Irish Eyes and its parent company, Green Isles Industries. Make it thorough."
"Give me time and I can tell you what color underwear the president wears and his sperm count."
"Um, do it fast and you can keep the sperm."
"Good for the skin, ain't that right, Shen?" he chuckled, and Shen blushed red as a beet.
The rest groaned.
"Nalu, if I get you the autopsy reports, can you tell me what's going on?" Shelby continued.
"Yes." Then he was off in his own little world again, probably dancing with dolphins or something.
"Delsin and Shen, you guys are backup. I want you to be communications for the inside guys -- be boyfriends, best friends, makeup people, entourage, or something. But you'll be the only connection between them and me and any help they may need. I'm counting on you two."
"Do we get that neat spy stuff that William's always buying and refusing to let us touch?" Rika asked, his eyes bright and hopeful.
"Um, yeah!" Shelby laughed as William paled.
"But those are my babies," Will nearly whimpered, thinking of his precious electronic devices in the hands of those two.
"And they're designed to do a specific job, babes." Shelby chuckled. "I'm sure these guys will take good care of them."
"They'd better," Will whined, resigned. "Because if they don't, I'll add alcohol to their skin creams and piss in their hair tonics."
They all blanched at that declaration.
"We'll be good," Delsin promised, eyes wide in horror. "Scout's honor."
"You were never a scout," Rika snorted as he rose to his feet, smoothing his dreads neatly back into his ponytail.
"Only because they wanted me to cut my hair." He sniffed. "I don't know why I wanted to join. Those uniforms are so tacky."
Then the conversation turned toward uniforms, men in uniforms, and how terribly gay the new Marines' uniforms were -- in short, another beautiful day in the basement.
"What have I gotten myself into?" Shelby sighed, then grinned as Will presented her with a steaming hot mug of... Irish coffee.
She hadn't even noticed him leave the room to fetch it. But she smiled as she took a sip.
He was good, in more ways than one, she decided. She licked a bit of whipped cream from her upper lip and smiled as he shot her an evil smirk. He was damn good.
And he had trained the boys, so all would be well. What could possibly go wrong?

Like most clubs, the lights were dimmed, and couples milled around on the dance floor that dominated the place. She paused, allowing her eyes to adjust to the light. One song blended seamlessly into another; this one was sexy and slow. Couples gravitated together, wrapped in each another's arms. She thought about taking a seat at one of the vacant tables, but didn't want to look like she was angling for a partner. Though if she wasn't, what was she doing here anyway? Her body felt alive and throbbed gently with the beat of the music. Her nipples pebbled, reminding her of the long forgotten potential of her body. For just a moment, she closed her eyes and swayed to the music.
She reached up and clasped the old necklace she wore, drawing some comfort from its weight. Before dying, Mrs. Neeley had dug through her jewelry boxes, finding the tarnished old piece, and had watched anxiously as Genie looped it over her head. She wasn't fond of the necklace, but hadn't taken it off since that day, not even to clean it. For some reason, it gave her comfort to wear the piece. The bass beat of the music seemed to vibrate through the silver that lay cradled in her hand.
Genie looked deeper into the room and saw a raised bar toward the rear. A seat at the bar would be a good compromise; she could enjoy a drink without feeling like a wallflower.
"Last Call for the lady in red. She's having a Devil's Advocate tonight."
To Genie's surprise, the bartender's voice came through the sound system, though she didn't seem to wear a microphone. Her accent was American, east coast. That in itself was a bit of a novelty and Genie felt a nostalgic twinge of homesickness.
She moved closer to the bar, narrowly avoiding a playful couple who'd strayed from the dance floor. She watched in fascination as the blonde behind the bar deftly prepared the cocktail, slipping it to the customer along with an electronic keycard. Genie slid onto a stool, and sent a tentative smile to the stunning red-headed staff member who was seated at the end of the bar, watching her through hooded eyes. Something about the woman made ominous shivers run down Genie's spine. The woman was dangerous and compelling.
Even more fascinating than the bartender's display was the small crowd of men and women gathering at the customer's back. Her erect posture betrayed her knowledge of their presence, and without looking back, she slipped from the stool and headed around the bar to a door. She turned, surveyed the group and nodded at a huge man, who immediately joined her.
Genie could swear that a vapor of smoke rose from the man's ruddy skin. His very essence spoke of dangerous sex and dark delights. She shivered, rubbing her hands up her arms. It was exciting, but not to her taste. Sexually, Genie knew herself to be a bit of a lightweight.
"Can I get something for you?" The bartender leaned on the polished bar, a friendly smile on her face. "Here's a copy of the specialty menu, if you'd like to check it out."
Genie quickly scanned the menu, and then flipped it over. There were sections with silly titles like Vampire and Werewolf.
"Devil's Advocate. Looking for a hot encounter without damnation." She looked at the woman and raised a brow. "This is a sex club?"
The blonde laughed and turned away, wiping a small spill on the spotless bar.
Was that even legal here in the UK? She laughed and tossed the menu to the bar, swiveling back to watch the action on the dance floor. She hadn't been in many clubs before, and certainly never a sex club, but it didn't seem too outrageous. Yes, there was some pretty raunchy dancing going on, and a fair amount of outrageous flirtation, but no one was sprawled out doing the dirty. Not in plain sight, anyway.
"Would you like to order something?" The blonde bartender was clearly holding back a smile, like she knew something that Genie didn't. "It might surprise you, miss. In fact, it might be the best part of your visit to London."
Whatever they were selling, she probably couldn't afford it. At least not until she presented herself at the lawyer's office with proof that she'd followed Mrs. Neeley's will. But still, it sounded... fun.
She shoved her hands into the deep pockets of her trousers and her blunt fingernail clicked on something hard. She pulled it out, and to her surprise, it was a credit card. Genie frowned down at her purse; she always kept her cards safely in her wallet. How had this one gone astray?
It gleamed in the dim light. Was it even hers? She didn't own a platinum card. All of her credit cards had ridiculously low limits. Genie looked closer and saw her name and photo on the face of the card. Perhaps she'd forgotten about it? Before she could puzzle out the mystery, the bartender had whisked the card from her hand and run it through the card reader.
"Well then, what'll it be?"
She plucked the menu from the woman's hands again and glanced at some of the drinks. "Siberian Husky." Cool and tart and sweet all at the same time.
"Good choice."
The bartender busied herself mixing the cranberry juice and the blueberry vodka, adding a splash of soda. When she turned back, she handed Genie the drink, along with a keycard. Genie shivered, but picked up the drink and took a tentative sip. She felt like all eyes in the room were on her. Even over the music, she could tell that the bar had gone oddly still.
"Last Call for the lady in... khaki. Siberian Husky. A brace." She gave Genie a saucy smile. "Double on the house today, miss."
Genie frowned and looked back down at the menu. She was clearly missing something here. Siberian Husky. Catch me if you can.

"Am I forgiven?" Fyche asked.
"You’re lucky I’m still talking to you. You’re lucky you’re still on my ship. You’re lucky you still have a body!"
I was referring to the organic body I’d finally agreed to buy for my long-serving ship’s AI. He had been begging for it for ages. He cited all the usual practical reasons why an artificial intelligence might want an organic body; guarding me while on assignment, helping me with my research, being an extension of the ship’s core memory and effectively allowing him to be in two places at once.
The list went on, but his real agenda was quite selfish. He, Fyche, an artificial intelligence, had fallen in lust with me. He openly admitted it, though was at a loss to explain it. I, and my body, had become an obsession with him. He wanted, he said, to taste my bodily delights after witnessing so many of my sexual adventures.
I wasn’t entirely sure this was a good idea, and I offered to have him psychoanalyzed, or whatever the equivalent was for artificial intelligence, but he convinced me that was not a good idea. Such analysis could destroy his distinct personality which, I must admit, I’d come to appreciate and grown accustomed to. What finally swayed me was the prospect that the month it took to grow a synthetic organic body around his positronic brain presented me with a too good to miss opportunity to linger at the capital and spend some extra bed time with Laz.
Laz. The thought of my lost lover sent me into another bout of sobbing. I’d been in this morbid state for three days. It was ridiculous.
"I know what will get your mind off him," Fyche said.
"Fyche, for the last time, you are not going to get into my pants!"
"I meant this."
I opened my scratchy eyes. Phong knows what I must have looked like. Three days crying can’t be a good thing. "What is it?"
He held a data card. "It arrived an hour ago."
"Who is it from?"
"The transmission didn’t say," he said. "It was coded private and confidential."
"And you didn’t even peek?"
"Tampering with private transmissions is an offense."
"Yeah, yeah," I said, not entirely believing him. "When have you not opened my mail?"
"I’m offended that you would think I would break my basic code of ethics."
I waved him into silence lest he start quoting me the AI code of behavior. "Don’t just stand there like the piece of furniture you are, plug it in."
The holo-screen lit up on a face I hadn’t seen for years. The eyes grabbed me first, like they always had. I always hated those eyes. They were too blue to be real, but were, in fact, her own. Her face was framed by a halo of jet curls. When I’d last seen her, Holly’s hair had been straight and long, but that was years ago when we were teenagers. Her face was animated, full of life and energy. She was beautiful.
I haven’t really thought about her in ages, really thought about her, that is. I was surprised that even now I still resented her. Call it petty but I was never one for sisterly affection.
Holly smiled that dazzling smile that would melt my father’s heart.
"Peri, I need your help," she said bluntly. "Come to Spaceport Adana. I have attached the coordinates." She fixed me with her azure gaze, the confidence slipping to be replaced by something like melancholic resignation. "I need you." The recording faded and I sat back in my chair.
"Your sister?" Fyche asked me. "I can tell by the resemblance. The same intensity in the manner, the arresting presence, yet, I sense she is naïve, a child almost, and she plays on that perception. Men want to protect her, and she lets them."
Starting with my father. I glanced at Fyche. He was watching me closely, his dark eyes attentive and kind. He always knew the right thing to say. Though I called him a simple AI and treated him abysmally, he was not a simple piece of furniture. He was, in all things where it counts, a good friend, probably my only one. "Her physiological signs?"
"Impossible to pick up on a hologram. I have to be in the person’s physical presence to detect their vital signs. However, pupil dilation, non-verbal behavior and phase variations in her voice suggest she is in a state of some anxiety. Is she susceptible to pressure?"
"Not that I ever noticed," I said.
"How long has it been since you’ve seen her?"
"Many years. A lifetime, maybe two."
"She seems to be in trouble."
"What do we know of Spaceport Adana?"
I waited the half second it took for him to interrogate the ship’s library and collate the results. "According to one travel writer, ‘Adana is a seething cauldron of crime, corruption and political unrest, a cancer on the tattered edge of civilization.’."
It seemed typical of Holly to end up in such a place. She seemed to have an affinity with degradation. "Prepare a summary for me," I said. "Holly’s a reporter. No doubt you’ll find some of her stories."
"The only one," Fyche mumbled.
"What?"
"She’s the lead journalist for the only independent news service, the Adana Observer."
I laughed. "You mean she has the whole spaceport at her mercy? Phong help them."
"Shall I set a course for Adana?"
"As fast as you can."

Even if Balthasar hadn't been standing guard by the wall, Zahra would have known better than to go near the man in the corner. His eyes were more animal than anything else, and she shivered, remembering the intelligence that had once shone from their ice-blue depths. "Hello, Jarek."
He didn't speak, but his gaze stayed fixed on her face as a flash of something flickered across his features.
"It's been a long time." She moved slowly to sit in the chair in the center of the room. "That research elective, yes? With Dr. Bautista?"
His lips parted. When he spoke, the words were hoarse. Gravelly. "I'm a medic."
"Yes, Jarek." She leaned forward a little. "We went to school together. Do you remember me? My name is Zahra."
He lunged so fast the stool he'd been seated on crashed against the far wall at the same time his hands curled around the back of her chair. Strong arms formed a cage, trapping her within a circle of masculine power and heat. She choked back the shriek that welled in her throat and steeled herself for an attack.
But none came. He inhaled deeply, drawing in her scent. In a mere moment, Balthasar dragged him away. Then Jarek grew violent, twisting to attack with an angry snarl and a blow strong enough to send the guard reeling. He turned and backed toward her, putting his body squarely between her and the guard. "Mine."
Hot, possessive magic filled the space between them. He might not have remembered her, but something about her was familiar enough to draw him close, and she could use that to reach him.
Zahra signaled to Balthasar to stand down, and eased up beside Jarek. Magic flared again, chafing her nerve endings and heating her skin. "Do you need me?" she asked quietly.
She was the King's cousin. It was the guard's duty to keep her safe, and he knew it. "Out of the question. He's feral, Zahra. If he needs relief, he needs a senior priestess."
Jarek growled and edged to the side, placing his body in front of hers again. "Stay away."
"He doesn't need a senior priestess." She raised one hand to his face. "You need a healer, don't you, Jarek?"
He turned his head and caught the tip of one finger between his teeth, a gesture of dominance and claiming. On the other side of the room, Balthasar hissed out a curse and reached for the com unit clipped to his belt. "I'm calling the high priestess. Your uncle will snap my neck if I let you do this."
"Call her," Zahra urged. "Will you wait, Jarek, if I promise to return soon?"
"I don't want another woman." Jarek turned to face her, one hand coming up to trap her fingers against his cheek. There was no hint of recognition in those frozen eyes, nothing of the brilliant, civilized healer she'd known. He was as wild as any warrior and twice as hungry.
And all his attention, all his magic, was focused on her. He'd take her, sate that wild hunger in the depths of her body. Zahra could barely breathe, and her cunt tingled in reaction. "No other woman," she swore, ignoring the guard's incoherent protest. "You have my vow as a priestess of Luna."
"Priestess." He seemed to be testing the word. He shook his head. "What's your name?"
"Zahra." Doubt almost made her falter. She couldn't lie to herself and think that he knew her deep down, under the trauma that had left his psyche in jagged shards. He didn't know her. "My name is Zahra."
His hand came up and his fingers touched her lips, traced their shape as if trying to memorize it. "You'll come back."
"Yes. Balthasar will take you to my room. Please go with him and wait for me there. Can you do that for me?"
Balthasar protested again. "Zahra, I can't --"
Fury seized her. "I am a royal daughter, and you will do as I say!" She fixed him with a glare and took a deep breath. "I know my duties and my place. Do you know yours?"
Balthasar's face closed off as brittle resentment filled the room. But he nodded. "Yes, priestess."
The tension in Jarek's body eased a tiny bit. His fingers ghosted over her cheek, over her hair and the line of her throat. "Zahra." From his lips, her name sounded like a benediction, a prayer.
"Yes." She backed away slowly, keeping her gaze on his. "I won't be long."
