"Thank you to Firestarter for joining me here on The Local Buzz. Do you have any parting words for your fans, guys?"
Before anyone could say a word, I leaned toward the mic. "Yes, I do, actually. This goes out to the 'mystery man' who just can't seem to leave me alone. Fuck. Off!"
The deejay immediately cued up our latest song -- "The One" -- and I bolted out of the small room. I desperately needed a smoke. Not even half a minute after I'd stepped out back to the alley behind the radio station, the door opened and closed again. I didn't have to look to know who it was, so I just continued to smoke and stare at the radio towers.
"What the fuck was that about?"
Knowing Michael for so long had taught me two very important things when it came to arguing with the man. First, he'll keep on until his point has been made; and second, it's impossible to interrupt him, which negates the first point entirely. I just shrugged and let him continue on his tirade, handing him a cigarette before he could think to ask for one.
"We just released a new fucking album, Jase. The last God damned thing you need to be doing is pissing off some guy just because he's sent you a few trinkets."
I handed him the lighter without saying a word. He wasn't done.
"What's so fucking bad about catering to an old fart's fantasies? Just because he obviously has a... thing for you doesn't mean you have to piss in his general direction, hoping the wind hits just right. God damn, Jase." Michael leaned close. "I've seen the shit he sends you; books of your favorite authors, jewelry, fucking sex toys? Damn, dude. Just play along for a change, will ya?"
Okay. Now he was done. I dropped my cigarette and ground it out on the broken asphalt with the toe of my boot.
"Why should I?" I didn't glare at him, didn't shout; just asked him that one question matter-of-factly. "How would you feel if some stranger sent you gifts? The books aren't so bad. It's the sex toy thing. It's no secret that I fuck guys, but bolstering my collection of rubber cocks is hardly the way to make me happy, if that's his intent."
Michael finished his cigarette and flicked it into a muddy puddle from the rain last night. "So he wants to get in your pants, big fucking deal. Not like he's actually going to, right?"
"That's not the point," I grumbled.
"Then what is?"
"The point is that I have some stranger stalking my ass, quite literally!"
"But he hasn't actually touched you," Michael pointed out. "Hell, you don't even know what he looks like."
"That doesn't matter. It's fucking freaky, plain and simple." Not to mention the fact that I'd still not told Julian about any of it. I lit up another cigarette just as the deejay -- Dusty -- came out.
"You okay, man?"
I nodded and shook the pack, sliding a cigarette out for him. He took it and Michael lit it. Dusty took a slow drag and eyed me silently for a moment. "Wanna talk about it?"
"Not really, man. Thanks, though."
"No problem." Dusty finished his cigarette in silence, patted my back, then headed back in, Michael behind him.
Instead of going back inside with them, I gracefully and quietly made my exit. I dug my keys out of my pocket and had just slid the key into the lock when I happened to glance in the car at the passenger's seat.
No way. No motherfucking way.
With a less than steady hand, I got the door unlocked and open, but that was about as far as I could make myself go. I simply stared at the pendant lying on a black velvet cloth in the middle of the passenger's seat, more wondering how the fuck it got there when the doors had been locked than the significance of the piece itself. When the front door of the radio station opened and Mike and the guys came out, I steeled my nerves and got into my car, quickly pulling my leather jacket from the back to cover up the necklace. I don't know what made me do it, but something told me this one was significant. It was too unusual not to be. I rolled down my window when Jesse, our drummer, approached the car.
"You going out tonight?"
Resisting the urge to look at the other seat, I blew out a breath. Hell, if anything, I figured my "mystery man" wasn't the club going type. "Sure. I need to call Julian first. Where do you want to go?"
"Masquerade?"
"Sounds good. Anyone else going?"
Jesse looked back at the others as they leaned against Michael's truck. "Hey! You guys wanna head to Masquerade?"
"I'm game," Michael said, shrugging. Marcus and Vic just nodded.
"Okay. I'll meet you there then." I started the car and Jesse backed away as I pulled out of the parking lot. A night out; I could handle a night out.

ISBN: 978-1-60521-304-0
Genre(s): Paranormal
Theme(s): Interracial, Werewolves, BBW
Series: Sex and Chocolate
Length: Novella

Blurb:
There are three things that Dr. Briony Theale loves. Her job as a veterinarian, a good bar of rich, dark chocolate, and Rico, the new ranger in charge of the Wildlife Rescue center. When a casual dinner with the mysterious Rico turns surprisingly intimate, Briony realizes that she might just have a chance with him after all, if only she could lose a few pounds. It's the ultimate sacrifice, but Briony goes cold turkey, and swears off chocolate forever.

Rico Montgomery fell hard for Briony the first time he set eyes on the curvy little doctor. Her brown hair and cocoa skin trigger cravings that he can barely control, and her fragrance is like the sweetest, richest chocolate he's ever scented in his life. That's a bad thing for Rico, because to a werewolf like him, chocolate is literally a toxin.

Rico can't live with it, and Briony can't live without it. And when a certain wandering wolf finds a bag of chocolate in the Dumpster near Briony's clinic, these two will find just how toxic love can be.

"I really can't believe you want to muzzle Chaucer. He's such a sweet boy!"
Dr. Briony Theale deftly placed the makeshift muzzle over the little schnauzer's head. Sweet boy or not, he was showing teeth just a little too readily. "Oh, it's just a precaution, Miss Wilson. My tech had to go home early today, and this just makes it a little easier handling him by myself."
"Are you sure that other vet isn't available? That nice man?"
Briony barely kept from rolling her eyes at the question. Like she hadn't heard that a million times over the past two years? "Dr. Sewell retired a couple years back." She bent to the dog, giving it a brief physical examination. "Now, what brings Chaucer in today?"
"He's sick."
Okay, the day was getting better and better.
"Can you tell me his symptoms? Or maybe what caused him to be sick?" She palpated the dog's belly and he grunted. Quickly, she turned to the thermometer. While holding the instrument in place, she hummed slightly.
"Chocolate?"
"What?" Briony blinked, wondering if her chocolate-heavy lunch was still on her breath. Not that she indulged herself that way every day, but still, she had to stifle the urge to check her breath against a cupped hand.
Considering where her gloved hand had just been... Her face grew warm with embarrassment.
"Well, he was acting hungry, so I shared some of my chocolate with him. There was plenty left over from Easter, and you know, chocolate is so fattening..." She broke off, eyeing Briony's abundant figure critically.
"That could be it. Chocolate is very toxic to dogs."
"I didn't know! Oh my precious..." She nuzzled the nose of the muzzled dog. Considering the muffled growls, the woman would have probably lost the tip of her nose if Briony hadn't taken precautions to muzzle the little beast.
"So is he vomiting? Acting particularly agitated or nervous?"
Miss Wilson bobbed her graying head.
"How much did you give him?"
"Well, not much..." She held out her wrinkled hand, which had a slight tremor. "Just a palm full."
"Dark or milk?"
"Why does that matter?" Miss Wilson was sounding decidedly irritated.
"Well, for a dog the size of Chaucer, eight ounces of milk chocolate could prove to be toxic, but only one ounce of dark chocolate would have the same effect."
Tears welled up in the elderly woman's eyes. "Oh no! I'm so sorry, Chaucer." She stroked the dog's grizzled head. "I gave him bittersweet. I don't care for that type so much."
The little dog was trembling, and Briony knew she needed to act fast. She left the woman comforting her pet and stepped away, stripping off her gloves.
"I'll need to keep him over the weekend. There's no remedy for this, but hopefully it'll work through his system without too much trauma. I'll give him some activated charcoal to help with the toxins, but mostly all I can do is support him until he recovers."
"Will he be all right?"
Briony looped a lead over his head and slipped the muzzle loose. "Well, that's difficult to tell. It'll take the toxin several hours to work through his system. If he's vomited, hopefully some of it is gone already. Unfortunately, it might take a day or two."
"If he stays here overnight, will you be with him? I don't see the point in leaving him here if he's alone all night."
"No, he won't be alone." She gave the woman a reassuring smile. "I have a tech that stays the night, and if there's an emergency she calls me at home. I live just minutes away."
She picked up the little dog, who struggled just a bit before settling. "We'll take very good care of him, Miss Wilson. I'll call first thing in the morning with an update."
She walked the woman to the door and nodded at Amy, the receptionist. Taking her cue, the younger woman came and guided Miss Wilson to the counter to begin the billing process. She sighed and returned to the back of the clinic to get the dog started on his treatment. She gently settled Chaucer into a roomy crate, checking his water bottle. No doubt the little dog was Miss Wilson's only family. She'd be shattered if Chaucer died because of her soft heart.
"So, you and me, Chaucer, we've got the very same vice."
The dog sat for a moment and then got up, circled, and sat back down. Within a few seconds he repeated the process. That was the hyperactivity kicking in. If he was at home, he'd pace and circle all night long until the effects of the chocolate toxicosis wore off. He was also in danger of having seizures that could kill him.
Slipping her hands into the pockets of her exam jacket, Briony found the half-eaten remains of a chocolate bar. She sighed and slipped a square into her mouth, letting it melt over her tongue.
Sex and chocolate were the two greatest indulgences in Briony's life. The sex might be lacking these days; luckily, the chocolate was abundant. That wasn't so bad. Maybe she was a little lonely, but how bad could it be when there was chocolate to soothe those other cravings?
She folded the wrapper around the bar and slipped it back into her pocket.

The Elixir Maidens, a well known drag queen band reminiscent of the girl groups of the nineteen fifties and sixties, buzzed around a hotel room in the New York vampire haven called Burgundy Peak. Known all over the immortal community as one of the safest, most entertaining places to work and play in, Burgundy Peak was owned by the husband of the Maidens' good friend Mel. With their latest gig in Las Vegas over, the group longed to visit the east again. Playing at a small club with a great reputation was just the sort of break they needed after a year of hustle and bustle.
If we get the gig, of course, thought Ruby, staring at his reflection in the vanity table mirror. Strange that he was more nervous auditioning at Burgundy Peak than performing in a major concert hall. Actually, his anxiety was understandable, considering the club's owner.
"Damn. My hands are shaking so much I can't get this eyeliner on straight," Ruby muttered, for the third time wiping away a streak of black marking the porcelain flesh beneath one of his slanted brown eyes.
His band mate, Crimson, curled his lip while adjusting his falsies beneath his red beaded dress. "Just cool it, Ru. You're getting your shorts in a twist over a stinking audition? Besides, we're pretty much guaranteed this gig because of Mel. Not that we need any help. We're the best. Don't ever forget that."
"Honey, I know we're the best. And it ain't Mel I'm worried about," Ruby continued. "Her husband, not Mel, runs Burgundy Peak, and everyone knows that man's reputation. I mean, this is Zigor. The Zigor. He's a killer in every sense of the word."
"Not to mention the most gorgeous piece of vampflesh this side of the Mississippi," said Scarlet, the third member of their group, his enviably high -- naturally high -- voice sounding a bit strange since he was carefully applying bright red gloss to his chiseled lips.
"It's not like we're desperate for this gig." Crimson grunted, tugging at his crotch. "Fuck, this tape is killing me. Why the hell did the airline have to lose the suitcase with my gaffs?"
A smile tugged at Ruby's lips. He and Crimson strongly preferred to restrain their male anatomy with an undergarment far more comfortable than tape, so for hours Crimson had been complaining about his missing luggage.
"Oh, poor baby," Scarlet teased, batting his lashes in Crimson's direction. "After the show I can help you peel it off. I swear I'll be really gentle."
Crimson snorted. "Save it, hot stuff."
"Pity a creature as lovely as you only likes girls." Scarlet shook his head, then turned to Ruby. "Whatever possessed us to let a straight guy into our group?"
"He's an absolutely awesome musician," Ruby said, tossing the eyeliner on the vanity. "Forget it. I can't do it."
With a loud sigh, Crimson grasped the eyeliner in one hand and Ruby's chin in the other. "Shut up and hold still. You're acting like a fucking amateur."
Ruby bit back a retort, if only to get his eyeliner applied properly.
A sharp tap on the door was followed by a stern male voice. "The Master will see you now."
Ruby recognized the voice and the exotic, virile scent as belonging to Onan, the club's chief of security. Onan was another delightfully handsome hunk of man. Unfortunately what he possessed in looks he lacked in personality. It had been literally ages since Ruby had met a person with such a sour disposition. As much as Ruby appreciated good looks, he considered charm far more impressive.
"On our way," Scarlet called, then glanced at his companions. "This is it, ladies."
"Let's go," Crimson said, his usually masculine tone now sounding distinctly feminine. In either gender, his rich voice was sexy enough to melt an iceberg.
Moments later, The Elixir Maidens found themselves in the club section of Burgundy Peak bumping and grinding their way through a medley of disco tunes. The club wouldn't open for another hour, so their audience consisted of Mel, Zigor, and several members of the staff who had paused in their work, almost instantly swept away in the Maidens' performance.
Throughout the show, Ruby couldn't keep from glancing in Zigor's direction. Mel had certainly hooked herself up with a stud. The man oozed sex appeal out of every pore, yet he had the look of a cobra about to strike. If Ruby was the squeamish type he'd have shuddered.
When the music ended, Mel and the staff broke into applause. The Maidens even garnered several cat calls. Zigor merely stood, walked to the back of the club, and disappeared through a door.
Crimson held his hands open, his large gray eyes blinking in confusion. "Are we hired or what?"
"I, for one, no longer care if we are hired," Scarlet said in his softest, most deadly voice. "I have had more than enough of the Master."
Ruby grasped Scarlet's arm before he could stalk off. "Hold it. I'm going to talk to Mel."
"What for? I --"
They paused in conversation as Mel approached, a smile on her lips. "You guys were great."
"Of course we were," Crimson said. "So you can tell the Master that no matter what he thinks --"
"He wants you to start on Friday. Have your agent contact him to make the arrangements."
Ruby wrinkled his nose. "But he just walked off. Didn't say a thing."
"With Zigor that can be good," Mel said, then hugged each of them. "It's so great to see you guys again. We have a lot to catch up on. It's going to be terrific having you here for the holidays."
For several moments they talked with Mel before excusing themselves to change out of their costumes.
Back in the room, Ruby peeled off his slinky red dress and pulled on baggy jeans, black spike-heeled boots, and a tank top that accentuated his slender waist made even slimmer by the D cups he preferred. He brushed his long auburn hair until it gleamed.
"Oh man, I'm glad that's over," Crimson grunted, tearing off his dress, wig, and padded bra. He straddled the chair in front of the vanity mirror and began swiping off his make-up in his typical rough manner that nearly made Ruby cringe. If the man didn't learn how to pat instead of scrub, his pretty complexion wasn't going to last another two centuries. "Shit, I gotta get laid."
"Crimson, baby, that's a little detail we just don't need to hear," Scarlet said.
Ruby smirked. "Of course. It's been like a whole two days since you've lured some poor girl into your bed."
"I make them happy."
"Says you," Scarlet muttered.
"If you weren't the wrong shape, baby, I'd show you how happy I make 'em."
Scarlet held up a slender hand. "Please. I gave up horny, self-centered bastards centuries ago."
Ruby slung his duffel bag over his shoulder and opened the door just as Onan was about to knock. Though fairly tall, especially with his boots on, Ruby still had to tilt his head to meet Onan's dark brown gaze.
"Master Zigor wishes you to have the keys to these rooms." Onan extended a large hand adorned with several gold rings, three keys resting in his palm. "They are among Burgundy Peak's finest suites. You may move in immediately.”
"Great." Ruby took the keys, tossed one to Crimson, the other to Scarlet, then turned back to Onan. "Anything else we can do for you?"
"No," Onan stated, his expression unreadable. He turned and walked silently down the hall.
A grin tugging at his lips, Ruby shook his head. "Guys, I have a lunch date with a friend. Talk to you later. Crimson, try to stay out of trouble."
"I'm already in trouble," came the strained reply followed by the sound of tape ripping away from flesh, then a string of curses foul enough to make Ruby blush even after fifteen hundred years of living.

Raine flipped over the menu and shoved the paper in front of my view. "Why are you torturing yourself?"
I flashed fang at her and she rolled her eyes. "Vamp someone else, honey. You know you can't have chocolate."
I sighed and pushed the paper out of the way. The display case was full of chocolate decadence of every grade and color. I moaned and scratched my nails against the glass. If someone would have told me becoming a vampire would have caused a recessive food allergy to develop, I would have chosen staying alive over being undead. Not that I had much choice in the first place. My mouth watered. Just one bite. I could take a nibble.
"Forget about it. The last time you did that you scared off my customers with your undead... death." Raine shooed me away, but my eyes remained fixated on my goal.
"It really sucks having a psychic friend."
"Seriously, you're going to make me quit my job if you don't stop drooling over my glass displays. Besides, you're creeping out my customers."
I sighed. She was probably right. I licked my lips and dragged my gaze away from the chocolates I'd never get to enjoy again. "I'd do just about anything to be able to eat chocolate again."
Raine shook her head, and her eyes took on that unfocused glaze I'd come to know so well. "You shouldn't have said that. Slapped fate in the face with your vow. You should be careful what you wish for."
I tucked a stray bit of hair behind my ear, unnerved by Raine's sudden loss of focus. "I really hate it when you get that creepy mystical voice thing going."
Raine's eyes refocused and she sighed. "You're going to have a visitor soon. I hope you're ready for him."
"Him?" I perked up considerably. Then a thought occurred to me. "This isn't a visited by three ghosts thing, is it?"
Raine rolled her eyes. "No. Make fun all you want, but you'll owe me for this one. Trust me."
I raised an eyebrow. "Like I owed you for the tall, dark, and dangerous man who would change my life?"
"He did! I was right, but you know how this stuff works. I couldn't see everything."
"He was a vampire, Raine."
She shushed me. "Keep your voice down and stop pretending like you're unhappy being undead. I know better."
I sighed. "Yes. I enjoy being a vampire. I just want to be able to eat chocolate. I even took Erin's suggestion and contacted the Kitchen Witch Society for help."
"Oh, that's desperate. She always talks about how much she hates her boss. Why would she suggest the society?"
"An unlifetime without chocolate is hell for this Hershey girl. She got tired of my whining." I leaned over the counter and gave her a bit of a hug. "I'll see you later tonight."
Raine hesitated a moment before holding up a finger. "Wait a second." She ducked behind the counter. I rose to my tiptoes trying to see what she was doing, but she came back up again. A burgundy bag was in her hand.
"What is this?"
"Chocolate. I've got a good feeling about this chocolate thing, so make sure you don't eat anything from this bag until you get your cure."
The edge of doubt crept into the back of my mind. "What if there is no cure?"
Raine handed me the bag. "There is. If you're willing to try for it." Raine gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."
I grinned, bag in hand, and gave another longing look toward the candy displays. "I hope it's some of the chocolate and peanut butter truffles."
Her smile told me she was up to something. "Let's just say, it might be fun to find out. Don't open it until you're given the cure."
I wasn't kidding. I'd do just about anything to be able to eat chocolate again. But a promise was a promise. "I won't open it until then." My heart ached with the likelihood of never being able to open the bag.
I put on my sunglasses and walked out of Sinful Treats. Yeah, I wear sunglasses at night. So what? Light sensitivity is big on my list of downers about this whole vampire thing.
I'd sent a message to the Kitchen Witch Society for help. How long would it take for one of their people to show up? This bag smelled delicious!

Skyler, a new recruit to twentysomethingtwinks.com, has one mission in mind: to get Thom, the cool, collected lead cameraman, naked and sweaty between the sheets. Skyler's used to getting what he wants. So is Thom.

Skyler does know that Thom used to work on the other side of the camera. What he doesn't know is that Thom specialized in training submissives. If you ask Thom, what Skyler needs is a damn good spanking. If Skyler doesn't watch out, he's in for a lesson on how to mind his manners.

Lucky Skyler -- that's exactly what he gets.

"Whenever you're ready, we can begin."
"I've been ready for a long time, handsome."
Thom had done more than his share of interview shoots lately. Katherine had her hands full with management in the recent upswing of twentysomething.com's popularity. He didn't mind. Thom knew he had a way with neophytes, of soothing them and gentling the nerves out of them.
He also knew that some of the guys joked around him after they'd settled in. Some went so far as to call him "the Priest" or wave hi and ask "How's it hangin', Father?"
Sometimes, if in a whimsical mood, Thom would assign them penance. Most laughed that off. Sometimes he warned them not to cross the line and earn themselves a spanking.
When he'd had cause to cross that particular bridge with Maddox, Thom had expected Maddox to snicker and ask if Thom planned to smack him across the knuckles with a ruler. Not so. Maddox looked at him thoughtfully and showed him respect thereafter -- well, Maddox's peculiar brand of respect, which was hard to tell from his normal insouciance, but nevertheless. Thom thought Maddox probably saw right through him.
Thom wouldn't have been surprised. In his six years at Twentysomething Productions, five and a half of those behind the scenes, he'd seen everything. Or so he'd thought. Come to find out, he had never seen anything like Skyler O'Reilly, not even Maddox, and that was saying more than a mouthful.
Skyler O'Reilly, twenty-one years old. Just. The date of birth marked on his dossier indicated he'd been legal for three months on the dot. Cinnamon-red hair that tumbled in a casually Roman sort of way around his forehead and cheeks, and curled on the back of his neck. Fair, smooth skin, no scars, no tattoos except a small sunburst on his right hip. Slim, but not skinny, the build of a fencer or a sprinter or even an archer. He'd be fast on his feet and quick on the draw. Good at sighting down a target.
"Did you get that?" Skyler uncurled from his lotus position and wriggled around to lie on his stomach. He propped his chin in his hand and peeked up at Thom through sienna-brown lashes long enough to reach the moon.
"The cameras and sound are recording, yes." Thom checked the new twink's pre-prepared dossier for special notes. Ah, there it was. Personality: cheeky. Beside the neatly printed font of the form, Katherine had written, Thom, behave. Tsk. It was as if she knew him when it came to pretty brats.
Skyler's pretty pink lips came together in a disapproving moue. Angry I didn't take the bait? Interesting.
Thom laid the dossier aside. He had a feeling this interview wasn't going to run on standard lines. "Tell us what brings you to Twentysomething."
"You do."
There was frankness for you. Thom schooled his expression into neutral calmness, a Zen stillness that came naturally after years of practice, and returned stare for stare. "Tell us a little about yourself."
Skyler rolled his eyes. He writhed back to a sitting position, this time with his legs hanging off the end of the bed, his sprawl wide and suggestive. "I've been a fan of the site for years."
"Your employee record states you're just now twenty-one."
"Three years is still years. I got an account the day I turned eighteen. How old are you?" Skyler widened the stretch of his legs. "I've watched everything, all the way down through the archives, even the ones you have to do some creative clicking to find. I've watched the four vids you made."
"Mmm. I see." Thom checked the video playback. Excellent; Skyler was still in frame. He'd done proper work there. Better still, he could take a good long look at the pretty little flamer and gauge the shallow depths of Skyler's baffled frustration. Used to having anyone you get in your sights, aren't you? Cute. Very, very cute.
"You're not going to say anything about my hacking?"
"That's not hacking. That's skill in finding Easter Eggs," one of the guys in the doorway -- there were always guys watching from the doorway -- muttered to another. A low ripple of amused masculine sound flowed through the room.
Thom faced Skyler. Calm, cool, collected, centered, kind, as neutral as a reflection of a statue. "We're waiting," he said.
Skyler's eyebrows drew together. Genuine confusion was a better look on him than pouting. "For what?"
"For you to tell us, the viewers, about yourself. Or, if you're uncomfortable, we can end the interview now. You'll be reimbursed for your travel expenses and the time spent here this morning."
Skyler bristled like a hedgehog and looked about as threatening as a bunny. "Screw that. I didn't petition for an audition to walk away now. What do you want to know about me? I'll tell you anything."
You've already told me all I need to know about you. Thom appreciated Katherine's warning. Too bad it'd been too late from the moment Thom laid eyes on Skyler. This had been a long time coming. Not even a monk could hold out forever.

Fearing for his sanity after being trapped on the Other Side for so many eons, all Conaire wanted was to get back to the human realm. So when the evil Fae Queen Elphame gave him the chance, he took it, completely unaware of the spell she cast as he stepped through the ancient circle.
His mother Scota, seeing the spell and knowing it would bind not only Conaire to the first female he slept with, but also his brother MacKay, found the perfect woman for her boys.
If only someone had told Tasha about all this before she slept with the arrogant Scottish god. Now she finds herself bonded to not one but two arrogant Scottish gods.

Tasha brought her glass slowly to her lips, contemplating the dark liquid. How many did this make? Did it matter? Shrugging, she tilted her head back and let the rich brew slide down her throat. The first several glasses had been a tad bitter and a heck of a lot richer than any American beer. Sometime after the fourth or fifth glass, the bitterness had faded. Drinking wouldn't make her problem better, but she couldn't think of a damn thing to help her out of the mess she currently found herself.
At least the pub was warm and dry. Outside, flakes of snow fell silently to the ground, blanketing everything in a coat of pure white. She had enough money left for a hotel for maybe a week. More than that if she could find a decent smaller inn. One thing was for certain, she would have to check out of the four-star hotel she was supposed to have shared with Derrick.
"Let's go to Scotland for vacation, he says," she muttered under her breath, her head drooping because she just couldn't find the strength to sit upright anymore. "It'll be romantic. Yeah, for you and the whore you ran off with."
She could probably get over the fact her so-called boyfriend had run off with some woman he'd just met. It was the fact the asshole had taken her freaking passport, the return ticket to America, and most of her money with him that really hurt. God help him if she came across his lying, conniving ass again. She would personally castrate him. Especially after the local cops told her there was nothing they could do because she had given him her stuff. They were on vacation together. Getting dumped hadn't crossed her mind.
What the hell was she supposed to do now? She'd spent most of the day pleading with the jerkwads at the American embassy in London. The results were far from promising. They told her she had to make her way to London before anything could be done, and even then, the chances of her being home anytime soon were slim to none. Not only did she not have enough money to make it to London, she couldn't legally work anywhere without a visa.
What had really galled her to no end was the way the snooty clerk treated her. First the woman had acted all surprised that she was an American in Scotland. The woman even had to nerve to ask her why she had decided to vacation there. A black woman couldn't vacation in Scotland all of a sudden? Was there some kind of restriction against such a thing? She'd had to restrain herself from punching the bubbly bimbo in the face. She was well and truly stuck. Damn Derrick Fuck-face to hell!
"Such a bonnie lass all alone. Why the long face, hen?"
Tasha's head snapped up. The irritable words "Leave me the hell alone" died on her lips as her bleary eyes focused on what had to be the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen. The woman was at least six feet tall with generous curves and not an extra ounce of fat. Her dark red hair fell in waves to her waist; her emerald eyes seemed to sparkle. Maybe it was a trick of the dim pub lights, but those eyes almost glowed, and her skin appeared to be dark gold.
She was dressed unlike anyone else in the small bar. Either she didn't realize it was snowing outside, or she was oblivious to the cold weather. The embroidered blood-red silk dress with spaghetti straps didn't quite reach her knees. She looked far too elegant and sophisticated for the small, run-down pub Tasha had chosen to sit and mope in peace and quiet.
The mysterious woman slid smoothly onto the bar stool beside her. Tasha cast furtive glances around the room. No one seemed to notice the woman, which was odd. In fact, people seemed to be looking everywhere else, almost as if they were purposely avoiding looking in their direction.
"What could be so bad that it has you drowning your sorrows in such a place?"
There was something about the woman's voice, smooth and comforting, that caused a fleeting memory of Tasha's mother to float through her head. She found herself wanting to crawl into the woman's lap and cry her heart out. It was the weirdest thing. Tasha didn't talk to strangers easily. Life had taught her not to trust people. Yet, before she knew what was happening, she found herself pouring her heart out to this woman as if she was her best friend. Something about this woman inspired trust. And damn if it didn't feel good to just let it all out.
"Oh, you poor lass," the mysterious woman cooed, putting her arm around her. "You will need a place to stay until this can be all sorted out. You must come with me at once. All will be well."
Tasha found herself nodding at the soft, lilting voice. Maybe it was the accent, maybe it was living so long without letting anyone too close, but Tasha allowed the woman to lead her off the bar stool and out of the little pub.
Had she been sober, she might have stopped to wonder that despite the fact the snow fell in earnest, the chill of the night air that should have bit into her skin never came, or that the white flakes falling steadily from the sky never once landed on her or her companion. Maybe one fewer Alba Scots Pine Ale and she would have realized though they were walking, their feet weren't touching the ground, and they were moving far away from the lights of the Edinburgh night.

It was dark in the back rooms at Gomorrah. It was always dark there. Riordan didn’t understand that. You came here because you’d found somebody you wanted to fuck, supposedly somebody attractive, with a nice face and a big dick. So why head into the dark to do the deed? He liked to see who he was fucking. But maybe that was just him.In the long run, it didn’t matter anyway. Riordan could see in the dark almost as well as he could see in broad daylight. He rubbed the scar on his neck, staring through the dim light, looking for subtle, telltale signs that one or more of the room’s occupants might not be human. The scar tingled -- there was a vamp here somewhere. He squinted into the corners. Fucking, fucking everywhere. Where was the biting and bloodletting? Had to be here somewhere. The damn scar was starting to burn. There -- in the corner. Movement against the wall. A big man, dark hair, a wide face. No outward indication he was anything other than human.Vamp. No question about it. A younger, slighter man knelt in front of him, sucking the vamp’s dick enthusiastically. The vamp had his hand in the other man’s hair, shifting his head as he worked, varying the angles.Riordan moved closer. The vamp’s attention shifted a little, focusing on him. Riordan gave him a look, a small smile. The vamp smiled back. It always worked. Vamps were insatiable as a rule; Riordan would get his turn.Looking away from Riordan again, the vamp closed his eyes and let his head fall back against the wall. His hips bucked and his body went taut, then released. Through the dim light, Riordan could see the other man swallowing frantically. Riordan’s own cock rose hard against his zipper as he watched. The scar on his neck fairly burned, but the sensation aroused as much as it hurt. After a few seconds, the vamp pushed the man away from him. The man looked up at him and grinned, then stood up and moved on. The vamp looked at Riordan. Riordan smiled.“You game?” the vamp asked.“Damn straight.” Riordan closed the short distance between them. “You got a name?”“What the hell do you want to know my name for?”Riordan shrugged. “Change of pace.”“It’s Roarke.”“Riordan.” He shoved the vamp into the wall and kissed him. The inside of his mouth was cool, and tasted of blood, but not of a fresh feed. Riordan knew the difference. The vamp gave no protest. They rarely did, unless they’d just fed. If Riordan’s instincts were correct, this one hadn’t fed for a day or two. Which probably meant Riordan wouldn’t have to kill him.“Roarke, huh?” he said, drawing back. “Lame name.”“Yeah, and Riordan is so non-pretentious.” Roarke clasped Riordan’s crotch, fingers outlining his cock. Riordan resisted the temptation to close his eyes at the sensation. “What are you looking for?”“Vampires.”Roarke quickly withdrew his hand. “What the hell are you talking about?”Riordan smiled. “I know what you are.”Roarke studied his face, then his gaze fell to the scar on Riordan’s neck. “What are you?”“Horny.” He grabbed Roarke’s shoulder and turned him around, pushing him into the wall. The vampire gasped, in surprise, no doubt. Riordan was strong, and not afraid to demonstrate that fact.“Shit…” Roarke let Riordan move him, shifting to allow Riordan access as he reached around and unbuckled Roarke’s pants.“You want it?” Riordan asked, sliding Roarke’s zipper down.“Shit, yes.” He hesitated. “You gonna kill me?”“Maybe not. Depends.”“On what?”“On you.” Riordan stripped Roarke’s jeans down and grabbed his ass, the full, solid, rounded muscles filling his hands nicely. He wondered what the human who’d just blown Roarke had made of the slightly cool temperature of Roarke’s body. Probably too drugged to notice. He reached forward, curling his fingers around Roarke’s cock. It was erect again, in spite of the recently completed blowjob, fired by natural vampiric hunger, with which Riordan was all too familiar.Roarke’s cock was thick, long, and uncut. Riordan wondered how old he was. Sometimes he could guess, from the intensity of the tingling in his neck, but not this time. A century, maybe more. It was hard to say. Old, though. Older than the one he’d killed last night. He dug a small tube out of his pants pocket -- enough lube for one application. He carried them whenever he was out cruising vamps, because six times out of ten he ended up fucking them before he killed them, or instead of killing them. Hazard of the job -- pushing them into an intimate situation, where their natural instinct was to feed, was one of the most efficient ways to determine which side of the line they were on. He’d done it with female vamps, too. Didn’t matter much.It had occurred to him, though, that it might be unflattering to go down in history as the vampire hunter who always carried lube.

Louis stopped and stood perfectly still. All his sensors confirmed the intruder's presence in the forest, and now he had a more definite fix on its location. Turning thirty degrees to the left, he set off again through the trees.
As he walked, he noted the dark reds and browns and golds of the autumn leaves, and the way the colors altered subtly with every wink of sun between the thick branches. With another part of his highly capable brain, he decided to wait until he had more information before informing his masters of the intruder's presence.
His flexible-soled boots made very little sound on the soft carpet of the forest floor. The tiny cracks of dry twigs could have been made by the same small woodland animals that watched him warily from behind the undergrowth, sniffing the air to try and catch his scent, to work out who and what he was.
Ignoring them, Louis strode with quick, sure strides toward the low, even breathing of the intruder. He pushed aside a heavy branch and found her.
She lay asleep at the foot of a tree, curtained off from casual observation by its low, spreading branches. A worn, dirty blanket covered her, revealing only a mop of black hair above the shapeless, woolen hump.
Louis hadn't expected a woman. He hadn't even been sure the intruder was human when he'd first picked up the presence. It had been more like some strange animal, although the readings had been confused. Swiftly checking, he discovered they were still confused, almost, but not quite, as if she used some kind of masking. All he could tell was that she was alive, female and mostly human. Definitely not Gardenian.
She slept peacefully enough, giving off no sign of pain or injury, although Louis couldn't think of any other reason for her to be sleeping in the forest in the middle of the morning. Questions as to how she got over the electrified fence into this private land, and why, would wait until he'd ascertained her health. Silently, Louis covered the three paces to her prone body, and crouched beside her. Taking the edge of the blanket in his hand, he drew it back from her face.
She was aesthetically pleasing, her features small and even. From her dark-shadowed eyelids, her lashes curved long and thick and dark against the creamy pallor of her cheek. Her mouth was generous and full-lipped, her chin slightly pointed. A strong face, not a weak or a vulnerable one. There was no reason for Louis's unexpected urge to protect her, and perhaps that was what distracted him.
She was fast. Before he registered she was awake, let alone moved to react, she had sprung from the blanket, throwing a vicious punch that connected with his jaw. Then she leapt on him.
Louis rolled until she was under him, her naked body bucking furiously while her fists thudded one after the other into his palms and were held immovable. He bore her hands down to the ground on either side of her head, and when she spat at him, merely wiped the spittle off his cheek with his shoulder.
Her dark brown eyes, the shape of almonds, burned into his with animal fury. But the excitement of aggression faded fast into desperation, even fear, as she realized her helplessness. Not that she gave up. Her body twisted under him, trying to use flexibility to escape his greater weight.
Louis waited for her to work it out, patiently holding her rigid, straining hands above her head. "I won't hurt you," he said calmly. "But you have to stop struggling."
His words seemed to have the opposite effect. "Get off me, you bastard!" she snarled, increasing her efforts. "I'm warning you!"
She didn't appear to see the humour in warning an opponent who so clearly had the upper hand, so Louis refrained from smiling. However, he knew enough of her now to be suspicious when her struggles stopped abruptly.
"I warned you." Before the last word was out, her nose and mouth began to elongate and combine. Hair began to sprout on her arms, her chest, neck and face. Her body swelled beneath him, gaining in mass and strength, and suddenly he wasn't wrestling a slight if strong woman, but a huge, angry wolf.
