Six years ago, Wendel Spears murdered his best friend's abusive father. Too bad he was being watched by government agents. Forced to become one of the agency's Berserkers, he thought he'd lost Jericho Bastillo forever, only to find that she followed him into the agency and is one of the Director's Valks.

Since then, he's kept her at arm's length, wearing his disdain for all Valks as a shield against his feelings for her. But when a computer code falls into the wrong hands, threatening Wendel's life and that of every other Berserker, he has no choice but to work with the woman he loves but can never trust to love him back.

Wendel tightened his grip on Jeri's wrist as he fought the urge to drag her across the table and show her right there every pleasure he'd dreamed of inflicting on her the last six plus years. But she was dangerous and a Valk, making her one of all-father's women now. Not his woman -- there was no chance of that anymore. All-father could have sent any other Valk to him or paired Jeri with any Berserker. A simple command and she would have been offering to spread her legs for some other guy.

"Show me, or let go of my arm." She repeated the dare, her body temperature spiking so high that his enhanced senses felt it like a warm shove.

Wendel slowed his breathing but kept his hold on Jeri tight. That trace of a tear on her cheek was killing him, softening a hard promise he'd made to himself the day he found out all-father was training her to become a Valk.

The bastard was cunning in finding ways to control the Berserker agents, particularly those who hadn't volunteered for the program. There were only two ways all-father could get to him, to make him submit. His brother and his...

Wendel cut the thought short and jerked Jeri halfway across the table.

If she was the only woman he wanted, then she was his woman, damn it.

If only that were enough to make him her man. But it wasn't -- not with all the programming and re-engineering they'd put into her. Not with what she'd had to do to graduate.

"Well?" She growled the question at him, the tight coil of her body warning him that she was ready to launch herself the rest of the way across the table. But for what purpose? To fight him or to fuck him?

She was breathing too fast if she wanted to fight him, and, even in the low light of the corner, he could see her pupils pulsing. Nor could he miss the smell rising off her -- intimate and distinctly Jeri. She'd smelled like that at the games, out on the bleachers, pressed hard against him and shivering. His cock hard, straining against his jeans, he'd known what it meant then as surely as he knew now.

"Yeah, I'll show you." Capitulating, he rose, dragging her sideways out of her chair and onto her feet. The other patrons, quiet until now as they watched the little drama play out, drew their seats back as he pulled her toward the door. No one moved to stop them. But she wasn't protesting and he was sure the look on his face made it clear -- he'd kill any man who tried to stop him.

He slowed as they neared the door, collecting himself enough to crack it open first and check the parking lot in case she'd brought anyone else to the party.

What the hell was he thinking? Of course she had backup. "What kind of team did they send you with?"

"Nine, holding at half a click."

"Because you told them to?" He looked back in time to see her nod. He snorted. "You really think it's your orders their following?"

Anger flashed across her face and her arm tensed beneath his hand. Knowing it would only piss her off more, he wanted to laugh, but couldn't find any humor in the suicide mission all-father had sent her on. "You should have said no, Jeri."

"Fuck you, Wendel."

"All part of the job, right?" He had pulled her around back to one of the twelve-foot trailers the bar owner rented by the month, week, night or hour -- depending on one's needs. Stopping, he held her at arm's length and fished for his key. Once he had the door open, he pushed her up the metal stairs and inside. No longer holding her arm, he clamped his hand to the back of her head, pinning her forehead-first to the opposite wall.

Always ready to run, he had a pack near the door and he pulled a chem light from it. He snapped the tube and a soft blue glow lit the small space.

"Strip."

She pushed back, resisting the hand that trapped her against the wall. He relaxed a fraction of an instant -- enough to give some distance between her and the wood paneling -- then gave her head a hard knock against the wall.

She responded with a sharp elbow that glanced off his ribs.

Amusing, almost.

He'd seen the small bulge of a gun in her boot and the telltale crease of a blade pocket in the cuff of her right sleeve. And for every weapon he could see, she probably had ten more he knew nothing about.

All he had were his bare hands.

He leaned closer, caught a whiff of her skin and hair as he whispered into her ear. "You're outmatched, baby girl. So stop fighting and start peeling."

With a low growl that hit him directly in his crotch, she ripped her jacket open and let it slide down her arms. Beneath it was nothing more than a black lace bra. His first instinct was to reach out and unhook it, freeing the small breasts for his hands and mouth. Instead, he pressed a fingertip against her spine, mesmerized by the way her shoulders instantly flared back while the tight little ass thrust toward him.

"Unhook it." The words came out strangled, the sight of her like a vise around his vocal chords.

Her hands shook as she fumbled with the bra's hooks and he wondered if the shake was real or a ruse to get him to touch the fabric. Every last thing on her was standard agency issue for a Valk -- which meant each item was deadly in its own unique way.

The jacket, boots, pants, knives, gun -- weapons within weapons until she was a walking minefield. He had no way of knowing if those trembling fingers were a set-up. Not that there was much left of his mind to care. All he wanted to do was pull those leather pants down and sink into her, hear her moan his name as his hands explored her hard little body.

"Faster, Jeri. You can't expect your boys to hold the perimeter all night."

"They'll hold." She toed her right boot off, the one with the gun, then reached down and carefully removed the left one. There was just enough phosphorescent glow from the chem light for him to see the spring on the left heel. She could have gassed him already, sending both of them into la-la-land until the tactical team woke them up.

"Right. They'll hold because you're the boss and that's what you want."

She nodded.

God, how he wished it were true. Not that they'd hold -- he had no expectation of that -- but that she wanted them to, that she really was stripping away every layer of deceit all-father had dressed her in.

Wearing a Fantasy Unit costume to a friend’s Halloween party was meant as a practical joke poking fun at Vance Gemini, the one guy immune from every living girl’s charms. But Morgan Macy looks a little too much like the “real” thing in her pink latex dress and vid mask and is forced to head home for a costume change before she even gets to the party. Seeking a quick and efficient retreat on the NYC subway, she finds herself on an empty platform with a masculine, all-too-familiar voice ordering her to halt.

Really, FU269…what’s your major malfunction?

Morgan Macy exited the metro lift swatting at the hand of the impertinent male who had just pinched her butt. “It’s just a costume, you fuckhead.”Reaching up to the side of her face, she tried again to remove the mask she had on. The pins securing it in place tore at her hair, making her eyes water. “Fucking defective Martian piece of shit!”

She’d have to wear it all the way back to her studio apartment in the Bronx. She glanced up and made sure she was on the right platform. She’d hopped blue line from Cathedral to 168th every workday for the last three years, but never with a damn Fantasy Unit mask obscuring her vision. She’d be lucky if she didn’t step off the platform and onto the track the way her night was going.

Pulling out her vid phone, she hit the fast connect to her Endscape account and streamed video of her upper body clad in the face mask and pink latex dress of a Fantasy Unit. “Halloween 2169. Epic fail. This is Morgan Macy… over and out.”

Walking toward the far end of the platform, she hit “send,” broadcasting the video to the inner circle of her Endscape account, and then slid the phone into the dress’s only pocket. Stepping close to one of the train monitors, she growled. The sign either said fifteen or eighteen minutes until the next train. Either was too goddamn long if the platform started filling up with drunks while she was dressed like this.

Somewhere behind her, a masculine voice ordered, “Wait!”

Morgan didn’t stop. She’d only made it halfway from her office to Tina’s costume party before being accosted by every male looking for a fast fuck with an unengaged pleasure droid. But something about the voice, or the way the platform’s acoustics familiarized it, slowed her pace.

“FU 269, halt.”

FU 269 -- the letters and numbers were emblazoned across her ass, big and black in the exact fashion of a real pleasure droid’s calling card. This wasn’t the first male voice calling out her costume’s unit number tonight -- just the first one she seemed to recognize and it made her feel like the floor had just dropped from under her feet.

That is, if karma really was a bitch and the voice ordering her to halt really did belong to Vance Gemini, one of the spreadsheet jockeys from the investment house Tina worked at. Only this one didn’t like to date real women with all their “complications.” The chance to offer him a little good- (or ill-) natured mocking at Tina’s party had been half the reason she’d selected the costume.

Of course, that brilliant plan had certainly turned around and pinched her in the ass.“FU 269, I said ‘halt.’ Are you malfunctioning?”

The question stopped her dead in her tracks. She waited, running through what she would say when he discovered his mistake. He was supposed to see her like this at the party, where he’d know it was a costume and only have to solve the mystery of just which one of Tina’s friends had poured herself into a pleasure droid’s uniform. Not that there was any guarantee he’d be curious once he found out the mask and “uniform” shielded a real live girl.

Ordering her to turn around, Vance -- or someone who sounded just like him -- repeated the question.

The costume had come with its own guide on Fantasy Unit etiquette. She turned, submissive, as if waiting for the would-be client to transmit his preferences. Keeping her gaze on the ground, she answered in a soft as silk voice, “Yes.”

The man put his finger under her chin and lifted until he was looking directly at her masked face.

Yep, karma is a bitch.

Dimly, I heard a swishing and then a perky voice said, “Welcome to Cravings, where we satisfy. Did you say something about five hundred pens? We don’t have those kinds of molds here, but I do have an order of…” The voice paused. I’m guessing this was when she noticed me bent over in agony. “Heavens, are you all right? Should I call a mediflitter?” Alarm froze her features as she looked at the disarray of platters. “Was it the samples?”
Her soft Earth-accented voice washed over me, negating the pain. Cautiously, stiff from the suffering, I eased into an upright position, tearing eyes locking on -- Oh, Adrona singing! -- my mate!
I shook my head, still unable to speak.
It hadn’t been the scent of chocolate doubling me over. It was inhaling the pheromones of my biological and spiritual match. The pain had been my body realigning itself, coming into synchronous alignment with the one female destined to complete me. And I, her. Shocked, mouth agape, I stared at a vision of… Humanness. Not exactly what I’d been raised to expect, yet I found her differences enticing.
Short compared to me, lushly curved and brown all over -- not a color naturally occurring among my people, her brown hair was a shiny nimbus of soft curls about her dark face. Lively deep brown eyes sat above a flaring nose and thick lips shining a deep, sleek brown. Brother of Winds, I wanted to bite that lower, pouty cushion, sink my forefangs right into it. And… ah, her breasts!
She probably thought them primly hidden beneath her blouse, but my visual range encompasses the infrared, and the full rounded bounty of flesh, the two meaty little nipples standing so sweetly at attention were fully visible to me. I wanted to eat her up.

Now, as the first winter storm of the season gathers, a hunter has entered his woods, bringing a bound and blindfolded woman as game.

Until tonight, Neva had survived as a healer in a gospel town where the monsters walk on two legs and the women do as they are told. “The Girl Who Said No,” she finds herself at the mercy of a jilted suitor and his brutish friends, with the woods her only chance of escape.

The roads into the Tahoma foothills were gutted. It had been decades since they had been paved and each year heavy rains and snow melt carried more of the asphalt away.
Tied in the back of a sputtering pickup truck, a burlap sack over her head, Neva Andrews couldn’t see the pitted road, but every inch of her backside felt it. She focused on each sharp jolt and let the rude caress of worn-out shocks over rough ground distract her from Mathew Paylin’s clumsy fondling.
“Finest looking ass in town, Nev.” He tried to keep his heavy hand shoved between her thighs, his thick fingers working to push her panties to one side. Each bump in the road sent his hand bouncing up and the game started all over again.
She shivered -- not from the clumsy groping or the sure knowledge the men were taking her up the mountain to kill her. She shivered because she was cold. It was mid-December and the air was thick with the promise of the season’s first big snowstorm.
Mathew moved so that his body molded flat against hers. His fingers dug into her hip and his weight pressed her down hard against the washboard metal of the truck bed. Her hands were bound behind her and pain spiked from wrist to shoulder as Mathew leaned in to taunt, “You brought this on yourself.”
Mathew rubbed against Neva, his movements forcing the thin cotton dress up over her thighs. Cold air bit at her skin and her teeth started chattering. His hands slid up under her dress, tugged her breasts free from her bra and squeezed roughly at them. She could hear and feel him breathing faster, the steamed air filtering through the sack and becoming trapped.
“Don’t see why you gotta die cold.” Dragging his knuckles over her lower belly, he tugged at her underwear.
Something sharp rapped against the glass -- Daniel or Josiah’s fist she guessed, or maybe a near empty flask of moonshine. Mathew pulled away, leaving her exposed and shaking. She felt him scoot to one side, the truck shifting under his weight. His hand touched her breast, drawing back again at the sound of another sharp knock.
“Fucking Josiah!”
The windows were up on the cab, no talk or music escaping from the front. But Mathew swore quietly just the same -- all six feet, four inches and three hundred plus pounds of him. No one crossed Josiah, not even a mountain of a man like Mathew.
But she had crossed Josiah. And now he was going to kill her for it.
The truck slammed to a stop, propelling the top of her head against the back wall of the bed. Doors opened, slammed and she heard Josiah yell. “Get that bitch outta my truck!”
The gate went down. Someone grabbed her by the ankles and pulled sharply. She landed on her bound hands and pain twisted through her arms and wrists. Her head struck the frozen ground a second later, nausea and pain mixing in her skull. She swallowed a scream, wouldn’t give the men that, would bite off her tongue and choke on the blood before she gave them anything.
One of the men dragged her by the ankles to the front of the truck. The heat had already faded from the engine but the headlights cut through the burlap’s loose weave. There was the shriek of fabric as what was left of her dress, bra and panties was torn from her body. Rolling her onto her stomach, they stripped her crude sandals from her feet. Hands grabbed the rope around her wrists and hauled her onto her knees.
That’s how Josiah liked his women, on their knees praying while the men stood.
Boots crunched on the frozen ground as someone circled her and then the sack was torn from her head. Twilight filtered through the trees. She glared at the three men. Mathew, the youngest, stood with the sack in his hand and his dick hard against his jeans. He glanced away, too cowardly to look at her now that she could look back. Daniel, his brother, was just as aroused but his last hit of X glazed his eyes and made his feet unsteady.
Then there was Josiah, a man colder than the ground that dug at her knees or the December air scraping at her lungs. She swallowed another wave of nausea, knowing his arousal would come only at the cost of her tears and blood.
Buckets of both.
Neva dropped her head, waited, naked, for the ground to open up and take her whole.
“Get my bow.” Josiah waited a heartbeat, long enough for her to imagine the arrow-fast rip of steel through her flesh, and then he shoved Mathew toward the truck. “Get my goddamn bow!”
Mathew moved like a petulant child, his steps heavy and dragging. He grabbed the bow’s case from behind the bench seat and slid it along the ground. “I thought we was gonna fuck her.”
Josiah knelt, almost even with her, as he opened the case. Steam left him in a thin stream. His breathing slowed with a hunter’s reverence as he wrapped his hands around the weapon. Standing, he notched an arrow and gestured at Mathew to get Neva on her feet.
“Maybe after.” He motioned Mathew to move away, and then he sighted down the length of the arrow’s shaft. “But we’re gonna let her run first.”

Rene Walker had consulted on at least two dozen movie sets since completing her master’s degree in classical studies, but this was the first one to be dressed with genuine antiquities. Getting a museum’s board of directors and an insurance company to agree at the same time was impossible. But Datura’s marketing director had somehow worked a deal with a private collector, and most of the items borrowed would be part of a fifteen-city tour when the film opened.
There would be security guards then, and velvet ropes. For most of the items, tonight’s only protection was a double padlocked door and sealed crates. But it wasn’t the cat statues and gold scarabs making her hands sweat.
That honor went to the room’s centerpiece -- the Altar of Anubis. Made from polished black basalt, it was almost seven feet long and three feet wide.
And she’d bet her degree it was a fake.
Stopping in front of the altar, she eased the bag onto the floor. The heat had turned her hair into a frizzy mass of copper strands, and she pulled a rubber band from her pants pocket. She secured her hair in a ponytail, then bent down and unzipped the bag. Inside were a small hand drill and bits, a voice recorder, empty glass vials, a laser level and rangefinder and, on loan from the local university, a portable spectrometer. She hooked the voice recorder to her ear and switched it on.
She stood back up and placed her hands palm down on the altar’s cold surface. It certainly felt time-worn, the stone having an almost sensual smoothness to it. Slowly, she ran her hands over it, leaning in and closing her eyes. She wanted to believe it was the real thing, to imagine the hundreds who had been sacrificed or embalmed on it. But the properties were off. For starters, the shipping weight was too heavy, suggesting a density four times what it should have been. And the owner had never allowed its inspection.
“Magnificent, isn’t it, Ms. Walker? It’s the one thing in my collection I’m keeping.”
Rene spun around to find Michael Tajnoor watching her with a sharp smile. Behind him another man carried a black suitcase. Both men were dressed in black all the way down to crepe-soled shoes.
“How’d you get in?” She glanced down at Tajnoor’s hand, wished she hadn’t when she realized he was clutching a black ski mask.
Tajnoor jerked his head in the stranger’s direction. “Mr. Tomsin is a man of many talents -- locks, cameras, aging lot guards.” Casually, Tajnoor tossed the mask at her face, ruthlessly grabbing her by the hair when she made the mistake of trying to catch it.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Walker.” His smile deepened, and Rene heard the snick of a knife opening. “But I have a schedule to follow and you’re fucking it up.”
The stab was quick and sure, delivered dispassionately but with a force that buried the blade. She tried to lift her hands, to grab at his arm and the handle sticking out of her chest. Tajnoor shushed her efforts, pushed her backwards until she was falling onto the altar.
Taking the voice recorder from Rene’s ear, he pocketed it, his gaze never leaving her face. Vision fading, she saw him gesture at Tomsin. “Those linens, bring them to me.”
Tajnoor sounded like he was ordering lunch service. Sightless, she heard the blade withdraw with a wet, sluicing noise, followed by the snap of cloth and the push of air against her face. As the sheet settled over her, she thought about Beth, her intern, and how the woman should have cut the cloth into strips already.
The last sound to reach her was Tajnoor, his words framed on each side by a deep chuckle. “There, let them think it’s one of her props. We’ll have our money before anyone knows she’s dead.”

In the three years I’ve lived on the Double Nought Ranch, I’ve never welcomed the sight of dust rising up on the dirt road. Drugged and tied in the back of a truck, choking on dirt for twenty miles, dust was my first impression of the place and I knew then things would only get worse.
As Deacon Esrial prophesied upon leaving me with my new husband, I arrived in dust and I would leave as dust.
My new husband, Theo Suther, was not one of the saved. Neither, according to Deacon Esrial, was I. At twenty-one, I had not taken a husband from among the deacons of the Last Testament Church, though several had taken me. My screaming and kicking and the bruises and broken bones that accompanied my protests were bad for morale among the other young women. I was an apostate. I had been blessed with the Word and I rejected it.
For that reason, I was outcast from the Kingdom of the Last Testament. But Deacon Esrial didn’t believe in being wasteful. So he traded me to Theo for a little bit of Jesus -- a gallon Ziploc of ecstasy -- and left in a cloud of dust.
What did I do for three years on a ranch on the Arizona/Mexico border halfway between Nogales and Naco with no other living soul in sight, no identity and no family that would take me in even if they could find me in the first place? What did I do in a borderland already littered with the bodies of dead, unwilling women? I survived. I laid the fuck still because the beatings I got for being a dead log when Theo fucked me weren’t nearly as life threatening as the ones he gave me when I fought back.
I waited for the day the gun was nearby and his back was turned.
Not only was Theo hyper-vigilant about hiding his keys or placing his gun, but he also had a preternatural sense of danger. The weeks and months turned into years. I escaped a couple of times early on -- caught once by a dirty border agent who ran drugs with Theo. The other times, I only made it into the surrounding desert and earned myself a case of heat stroke.
Things started to change six months ago. Theo became erratic -- leaving in the middle of the night, running into the desert with his gun and keys but without bolting me down in the shed. Two months ago, he seemed to completely break down, running in a wild rage through the house before he flew out the front door and into the night, taking only his keys and cell phone with him. So now I had a shotgun, plenty of shells, a house and shed stocked for the apocalypse and a car with no keys.
Oh, yeah, and dust rising up on the horizon with no time to run for one of the covered pits surrounding the house.
Shielding my eyes against the sun, I spotted a beat up Chevy truck -- probably white but showing beige as it rumbled over the dirt road. I stepped onto the patio with the shotgun cradled in my arm. The truck stopped in front of the house with a kick of dirt and gravel. The man who got out was a head taller than the top of his pick-up cab -- probably the tallest man I’d seen in real life. He had on jeans, hiking boots and a dirty white t-shirt. Tanned skin showed where the tight clothes didn’t cover him and sunglasses masked his eyes.
Let me say it right now -- I’m not dead, just badly damaged. There had been boys my own age within the confines of the Kingdom. My body had responded like any girl’s would. I even made out a few times until we were discovered and punished -- the boy deemed lost and expelled from the compound. I, on the other hand, had been beaten and scoured, re-baptized in an effort to save me. At least the deacons called it a baptism. The TV news shows piped in via Theo’s satellite called it waterboarding.
So, yeah… not dead, just damaged. My awareness of the stranger’s good looks -- the hard, muscled body, chiseled jaw and firm lips, the aura of mystery and sensuality the sunglasses added -- was more than peripheral. But my knowledge that there were no white knights outside of Hollywood was complete. Anyone setting foot on Double Nought was a danger to me until proven otherwise, and I kept the shotgun aimed in the stranger’s general direction as he approached.
Running my hand over the cold steel barrel, I adopted my best tough bitch pose and gestured at the Chevy. “Haul your ass back to the truck and move on, Mister.”
He smiled at that and kept on walking, pushing the shades up as he stepped onto the front patio. Five feet from the end of the barrel, he stopped and hooked his thumbs into the front pocket of his jeans. “Theo home?”
With the sunglasses up, I could see that his irises were a Bisbee blue, the same color as the turquoise they pulled out of the ground around here, and laced with black and a hint of danger as he stared at me. His hair was black, too, and kept long enough to curl around his neck. A pale white scar, stark against the deep tan, ran along his left cheek, starting just below the dark fringe of eyelashes and cutting down to the square jaw. Straight white teeth and the devil’s grin.
They’d warned us about men like this in the Kingdom -- good-looking, easy-going -- in short, everything the deacons weren’t. It wasn’t the deacons’ warnings that worried me, but the network of black that spread through the irises. I’d seen that same veined pattern along the irises before, with Theo’s coppery gaze and in some old pictures boxed out in the shed, the name on the back scratched out. Whoever this man was, those eyes told me he was a blood relative to Theo.
I took a step back and raised the shotgun. “Push off!”
There was no fear in this one. He stepped closer, straight up to me until the barrel of the shotgun was pressed against his flesh. “You must be Theo’s, what, wife? Girlfriend? I’m Shane -- his brother.”
I tightened my grip on the shotgun, worried that he’d try to take it from me, as close as he was now. “I don’t give a fuck who you are. Theo’s not here, and you’re not welcome.”
Shane shoved his hands deeper into his pockets. “I’ll wait.”
