"Hey," he murmured, cupping my face in his hands. "Thera, talk to me. What's going on?"
I tried to bat his hands away. They stayed put, stubbornly unbattable. Finally I gave in to the inevitable and glared at him, not hiding the moisture on my cheeks. "There, are you happy now?" I snapped. "Want to make fun of me a little more? Maybe this will solidify your reputation as the Bad-Ass of Olympus—the Great Ares, the god who made a Fury cry. That'd be perfect for you, wouldn't it?"
"Shit," he whispered, but he didn't release me. His hands slid down to my shoulders, holding them in a gentle grip that was still unbreakable. "Thera, I -- damn, I'm sorry. I thought... well, I mean, I assumed...”
"I know what you assumed," I said, trying to get hold of myself and failing miserably. The tears were falling in a steady rain now. "You assumed what everyone else does -- Furies don't have feelings. We don't think of anything but destruction, don't want anything but blood, don't value anything but suffering. Well, guess what? You and everyone else forget one little fact -- I'm a goddess, same as any other! Does Athena think only of collecting more wisdom? Does Artemis hunt all the time, forsaking everything else? Does Aphrodite spend her every waking moment screwing?"
Ares was looking at me like he'd never seen me before -- and I suppose he hadn't. "With Aphrodite, it's close," he said, but he didn't smile. "I'm sor --"
"Yeah, you're sorry, everyone's sorry, big fucking deal," I interrupted, again trying to escape his grasp and again failing. "At least you've done one thing for me -- I won't waste any more time trying to be something no one will let me be. Damn it, Ares, will you let me go already?"
He shook his head. "Not until you let me apologize properly," he said, and when I took a breath to yell at him some more, he stopped my mouth with his own.
I froze. His lips were firm, his tongue teasing; he tasted of the sweet dessert wine and a hint of spice, and I didn't have a clue what to do with him when he was kissing me. He nipped my lip, surprising a gasp from me and making me aware for the first time that I wasn't breathing. I jerked my head away as if waking from a dream.
"What do you think you're doing?" I snapped, trying for outraged and only achieving breathless.
"Apologizing," he murmured as he scattered little kisses over my jaw.
"I don't need a pity-fuck in an elevator to make me feel better," I growled, and tried to shut up every neglected part of my body that was screaming for me to take it back, that pity-fucks were just fine and they'd like one or two of them right now.
He nuzzled my earlobe, which immediately joined the chorus of body parts clamoring for a good fucking, pity-induced or otherwise. "Too bad," he whispered. He caught my hand and pressed it to the front of his slacks, molding my palm against the rigid length behind his zipper. "What about one to make me feel better?"
Yes! my body screamed. I told it to shut up and tried not to notice the thickness of his cock under my hand, the warm, hard size of it. I failed utterly. "Get off me!"
"No," he said, and this time when he kissed me, he was serious about it.

Even though she was expecting the ring on her phone, she still jumped when it rang. Answering, she closed her eyes, waiting for the first sound of his voice.
"Danara? It's Taine."
Neptune, he did talk like Sean Connery, but oh so much more sexy. She felt a wave of sensation run through her body and the flush of moisture in her pussy on hearing his voice.
"Danara, are you there?"
Opening her eyes, she met his and answered his question with a shaky smile.
"Yes, I am here I was just..." She broke off unable to say anything more. She reached up with her hand and gently touched his face on the screen and heard his indrawn breath. This was an amazing experience, seeing him and talking to him at the same time. Thousands of miles apart.
"I know, love. I know. I can't believe that I have finally found my mate," Taine whispered in her ear. "You do feel the same, don't you? I'm not the only one who is sure that..."
"Of course I feel the same. I've never reacted this way before with any man," Danara cut in, pleased that he felt as she did. "It's just that this was so unexpected. And to hear your voice, well, it sent flutters down my body." Blushing, she stopped before she completely embarrassed herself.
"I'm sitting here very uncomfortable, so knowing you feel the same doesn't make me feel so bad." Taine laughed in her ear.
"Oh! Oh, I'm sorry." Danara wasn't sure what to say to him after he admitted to having a hard-on at the sound of her voice. Well, she could ask him to keep talking while she masturbated, but she was too shy to suggest that to him!
"It's not your fault, little one. Just the way my body is reacting to yours. There's nothing we can do about it. Unless..."
Danara waited for Taine to continue, but she already knew what he was loath to put into words for fear she would be insulted. After all, he didn't know her, not really. He just recognized her as his mate. She decided she would be the one to make the first move.
"Watch me, Taine. If this is not what you meant, let me know immediately," Danara whispered huskily, then stood up and started to unbutton her dress.
Hearing the groan in her ear told her she hadn't misunderstood what he wanted. Slipping the sleeveless dress off her shoulders, Danara let it slide down and off her body, then sat back down and waited for his reaction.

Rule 1: Re-establish sustainable food supply
"What's wrong, Caro?"
Caroline McGrath squinted up at the guy she loved, irritated at the lopsided but adorable grin on his face. He'd done this on purpose. Damn him. "What do you think?"
Now he was chuckling at her. "Uncle Larry did the tilling for you. All you have to do is plant the seeds and mark them, right?"
"Is that what he told you? Because it wasn't quite that simple when he explained it to me."
Robbie Houston's grin widened. "You have to remember that he used to be in the Marines. They had a certain way of doing things. He likes things done a certain way."
"No kidding." Holding up the complex diagram -- written in perfect penmanship, and in red ink no less -- Caroline showed him the source of her irritation. Plant the seeds and mark them? Right. The schematic his uncle had given her was so complex she'd need a NASA scientist to interpret it. And they were probably all dead because of the same zombie apocalypse she and Robbie were fortunate enough to have survived.
Robbie took the sheet of paper from her. His grin faded a little as he shook his head. "Wow."
"See what I mean?" She wanted him to acknowledge that his uncle had given her an impossible task.
"Yeah." Robbie let the sheet of paper go and it drifted to the ground. He crouched in the freshly tilled earth next to her. "Forget that. Just plant the garden the way you would. As long as stuff grows and we have food to eat, he'll be happy. He's really not all that bad."
Caroline eyed him skeptically. "Then why do I feel like I should salute or something whenever he's issuing orders?"
Robbie's grin was back in all its full glory. It had her insides melting just like it always did. "Just do it your way. I promise it'll be okay."
"Just one problem there."
"What's that?"
"I've never planted a garden, Robbie. I've never even tried to keep houseplants. I can literally kill a plant by looking at it."
Robbie's amusement didn't waver. "You've never planted a garden?"
"Not once."
"Never even helped someone in your family with one?"
"Nope."
Pushing his dark hair back off his forehead, the way he always did when he was thinking of a solution, he nodded. "Okay. No problem. How hard can this be?"
"Wait." Realization hit her. "You've never gardened either?"
"I have." He was only a little defensive. "I was little though."
Caroline blew out a frustrated exhale while Robbie sank to his knees in the dirt beside her.
"So let me get this straight. You volunteered me to garden because you can't?"
"I'm sorry. Most girls I've known can garden," he told her.
"Most girls can, huh?"
He seemed to know she wasn't really mad. "You're not most girls," Robbie said. "In more ways than one. I love you."
Caroline had to smile at that. But that happy thought worked its magic and passed quickly. Her gaze swept the scene before her. Love each other they did, but that didn't get Uncle Larry's garden started.
Following the line of her gaze, Robbie nodded. "Okay, let's start with the tomatoes." He leaned in closer, his breath whispering past her ear as he spoke quietly, making her shiver. "He's got the seedlings started. We just need to dig up the dirt and plant them."
He moved away from her only long enough to grab the box with the tomato plants that sat just beyond the edge of the tilled area. Then he crouched behind her in the dirt, taking a tomato plant in one hand.
"Okay, Caro, get the trowel and dig out a hole for the first plant." His voice was at her ear again, sending shivers of delight through her.
"What's a trowel?"
"The one tool sitting in front of you at the moment."
"Shut up!"
He laughed.
Caroline did as he asked, picking up what looked like a hand shovel and digging out a hole in the earth at the corner of the garden. "How's that?"
"Good. Now..." His arms came around both sides of her, and as she watched, he placed the tomato plant into the hole in the earth. With his hands, he gently pressed the plant into the hole, making sure it was secure, and then used the trowel to place loose earth all around it.
"One down."
And dozens more to go. Caroline glanced at the full box and sighed.
"Is it that painful?" Robbie asked.
"No." But her attempt at enthusiasm fell flat.
"Then what's wrong? Gardening's not your thing, huh?"
"It shouldn't matter what is or isn't my thing now, should it? We need the garden. We need food. I'll learn to like it, I guess. I just hope the plants survive."
"They'll be fine," he assured her.
"Wait. Even if the plants make it, how do we keep the vegetables from being eaten? You know, by deer or rabbits?"
"Uncle Larry has an electric fence around this entire yard. It's also to help keep us from being eaten."
Caroline glanced at the 9mm holstered on her hip that she was only now becoming comfortable with. It made her feel better. A pack of zombies could get through an electric fence; she'd bet on it. It would only take one or two to tear it down in one place and the rest would pour through. They'd have more trouble getting past her Glock.
"Let's see if we can make gardening a little more fun for you, shall we?"
Caroline didn't know what he had in mind, but the wet kiss he planted on her shoulder showed promise. "How are you going to do that?" she teased. He brushed kisses across the strap of her tank top to the column of her throat and back to her ear. His tongue swirled in that sensitive shell. His fingers worked at the holster until he'd carefully removed it and her gun, and set it next to the plant box.
"Why do we like anything, Caro? Usually we have a good memory of it." It took a moment to catch her breath to answer. His hand had snaked around her torso and his fingers made a dive into the jean shorts she wore...

"Caroline," he began, keeping his voice calm. "We can't stay here. You have a Jeep. I have guns and some ammo. Let's get out of here."

Caroline met his gaze then.

"I know we don't know each other that well," he spoke her thought aloud, thankfully not referencing the night they'd spent together. "But we're both the survivor type to have made it this far. Right?"

"I guess." He was right. They couldn't stay there in the building. Not without starving anyway. Or going absolutely crazy.

She had transportation. He had... "Why do you have guns?" she asked.

"That apartment I picked my way into," Robbie explained. "Guy had a gun safe in there and the key was stuck to the back in one of those magnetic boxes. Three handguns and an assault rifle that I'm pretty sure isn't legal. There's enough ammo to get us started. We can find more on the way. We'll need it with those things."

"And you know how to use guns?" She wanted to make sure before she agreed to anything.

Robbie nodded. "I'm from Texas originally. My dad was a card-carrying member of the NRA. Thought every man should know how to be a decent marksman."

He said the last with a heavy accent and she guessed doing an impersonation of his father. She almost smiled and then thought better of it. "Your parents...?"

Robbie's gaze didn't waver. "Dad's been gone for a while. Long before this. And Mom..." His eyes slid closed and she considered her question answered.

"How about you? Do you have... anyone?" he asked carefully.

"My parents have been gone for a long time. I didn't have brothers or sisters. And the family I did have left, well, I couldn't reach any of them..."

"Anyone else? You know..."

Her cheeks warmed when she realized now he was wondering if she'd lost a boyfriend or a husband. He hadn't seemed worried about that the one night they'd spent together. But in his defense, he'd been drunk too.

Caroline chuckled. "Well, there's an ex-boyfriend I wouldn't miss much if he got eaten. But other than that, no."

Robbie grinned now. He really had a great smile. "Yeah, I had one of those exes. Doesn't really matter now, does it?"

His gaze moved over her face in a way that brought more heat to her cheeks. Such intensity in those deep green eyes... Why was he looking at her like that? Did he realize her heart had just gone from ten to sixty in her chest?

Caroline looked away first, ending the moment, and stepped back. She had to remember it had probably been a while since he'd gotten laid. Maybe not since the world as they knew it ended. That was likely the only reason he was looking at her like that.

For that matter, it had been a long time for her too. The last time she'd had sex had been the night with him. He was good in bed, she'd give him that.

"So what are we going to do?" Caroline asked. "How do I know you won't take my keys and leave me here?" You've left me before. "You're... armed..."

Robbie nodded but his expression remained patient, calm. "I'm not going to leave you, Caroline. You're just going to have to trust me."

Trust him?

"Don't give me that look." Now his infectious grin was back. "You have every right to feel that way. I'll just have to earn your trust somehow. And you could have done worse even though you might not agree with me right now."

Okay, he was earning points for at least alluding to the fact that he was an asshole.

"I guess we need a plan here, right?" Caroline tried to focus on their situation now. "I tried it without a plan yesterday and you see how well that turned out."

Robbie laughed with her. "We'll come up with a plan. I have an idea about where we could go. And it would probably be a good idea to get a solid night's sleep before we try this. It's almost dark now..."

Caroline nodded her agreement. They should absolutely use any advantages they had, daylight being one of them.

"Can I take your couch?" He tipped his head in the direction of her living room furniture which was covered by blankets, old magazines...

"Sure." At least he wasn't making assumptions about how things would go between them. "Wait, don't you have to go back and get your guns and stuff?"

"Oh, shit," he muttered, dashing for her door. "I left them in the hall."

"Why?"

"I needed your trust and I wasn't sure marching in like the Terminator with my assault rifle was the way to go."

While Caroline watched, he pulled a handgun from the waistband of his jeans at his back. He flipped a switch at the top of the handle, the safety she guessed. Then with the gun at the ready, he worked the deadbolt and lock of her door and darted out just long enough to grab an enormous duffle bag and an acoustic guitar. He worked furiously to secure the door again before tucking the gun back into his waistband and dropping the bag carefully to the floor by the door.

"Did you see that... thing?"

Robbie shook his head. "No."

"Those are the guns?"

He nodded. "That and a few travel items. Just in case you said yes." His mouth curved up into a cute half smile. "Traveling light. You'll need to pack too."

Pack. It was a daunting thought. She'd be leaving her apartment, her home, behind. The shock of it must have showed on her face because his expression softened. "I know. It seems crazy to have to just pick up and take off. Leave everything familiar."

One huge question echoed in her mind. "But where are we going, Robbie?"

"South to Virginia."

"Who or what's in Virginia?"

"A crazy uncle who's been predicting some shit like this would hit for years. If anyone's still out there, he is."

Caroline nodded, hoping they would find his relative. But she didn't state the obvious. The odds were against it.

"And if that doesn't pan out, wherever there's food and shelter and whatever else we need to stay alive. That's the main goal now."

Staying alive.

It was one hell of a big change from the daily goals she used to have. Now the thought of what she'd eat and what she'd watch on television before she went to sleep alone seemed so trivial and unimportant. And it really was.

She'd have given anything to have that world back.

"Ladies, open your eyes," Rick announced when the four of them came to a stop.

Julia already had an idea what the surprise was since she and Madeline had only been hinting about having a Christmas celebration for weeks. Still, she couldn't keep the smile from her face when she saw the magnificent decorations that transformed Rick's normally sedate mansion into an abode the legendary St. Nicholas himself would be proud to call home.

Behind her Madeline squealed. "It's beautiful!"

And it was. From the enormous Christmas tree adorned in shining silver ornaments and pure white ribbon to the fragrant poinsettias and holly that framed the fireplace with its cheery fire, the parlor was better than anything Julia could have dreamed up.

"Do you like it?" Mischief sparkled in Rick's onyx eyes, making her suspect there was more to the surprise than the scenery.

"Like it? I love it."

"If you like this, you're really going to love the rawhide bone I got for you," Maddox taunted her with a teasing smile.

"Maddox, you ass, not even you can spoil this for me," Julia assured him. Since Madeline's arrival into their lives, she took his dog jokes -- he enjoyed taunting her for being werewolf -- in stride. But as much as Julia adored Madeline, and she was begrudgingly starting to like Maddox because of her, she'd never ever let him think he'd bested her. It was a pride thing. A werewolf thing. And in the company of so many vampires, Maddox and her lover Rick included, maintaining her identity was important.

Rick shot his friend an admonishing look before turning on that smile that always stopped her cold. Now his dark eyes were smoldering.

"I think for a gift we can do much better than that." Rick's tone held promise.

"Well, it's Christmas Eve so I get to open it now, right?" Julia teased.

Rick cut his eyes to Maddox, which irritated her because she knew then that Rick's friend was in on whatever the secret was. Why was she always the last to know things? Or did it just irk her because her lover was always in the know? Rick could read minds.

"Perhaps a private time later," Rick suggested. "I can give it to you when we're alone."

Julia cocked an eyebrow at him, curious as hell now.

"We're all big people here, dead and alive," she pointed out. "Let's see it."

Rick sighed. He even seemed a little flustered. Okay, now she was sure it had something to do with sex. Julia smiled. Her Rick could be so old-fashioned at times. Her kind, the werewolves, were so open about sex and would often mate in groups. She'd always found watching someone else fuck while she was being fucked only pushed her own desire higher.

That wasn't to say Rick wasn't a fantastic lover because he knew how to keep her very happy. But the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to shake him out of his comfort zone. Julia found herself wanting to challenge him sexually.

"Well?" Julia prompted him.

Maddox's expression was hard to read but Madeline was definitely curious. Her gaze was riveted on Rick as he went to the foot of the enormous Christmas tree and fished out a small box wrapped in golden paper, tied with a blood red bow. Julia thought Madeline might go with her on this experiment she'd come up with on the fly. Madeline had once been a prostitute and it wasn't like she had any illusions about sex.

Rick approached her with the package in hand and she could tell he was trying so hard to keep his expression blank. He was doing a terrible job of it. A myriad of emotions flashed across his handsome face. Embarrassment, curiosity, desire... His black eyes were gleaming. It had heat pooling low in her middle.

Julia snatched the box away from him before he could change his mind and proceeded to rip through the wrappings and flimsy cardboard box in very short order. Inside the box was a beautiful bottle, fashioned in blue glass with a shape very similar to an hourglass. The liquid-filled container was sealed by a simple piece of cork at the top.

"What do we have here?" Julia teased him, letting all the wrapping fall to the floor while she held onto the bottle and worked the cork out of the top. Once she'd freed it, a delicate fragrance filled the air before her. The scent reminded her of flowers at first. But it lingered, somehow becoming a heavier scent. More heat, more wetness gathered between her thighs.

"Your present," Rick answered simply.

Julia cocked a brow at him. It smelled good, but weird. Very weird. "It's not perfume, right?"

Maddox snorted. Madeline shook her head.

Rick's smile widened. "It's an... aphrodisiac," he admitted.

Julia laughed, wondering what shade of red he'd turn right now if he could. Lifting it just under her nose, she took another whiff. The scent was strange but... good. Her nipples tightened into diamond hard points and the walls of her pussy clenched now.

She'd heard of aphrodisiacs. She didn't have a lot of background information but she knew their basic purpose. "So I...?"

"You drink it," Madeline answered, smiling. There was a touch of concern in her expression though. "I wouldn't drink much. Some of those can be quite... potent."

Julia nodded, sure that her friend knew what she was talking about. Still, breathing in the scent again, Julia's mouth began to water and she turned her attention to Rick. She wanted to taste the potion. Then she wanted to taste Rick. Every single inch of him...

She was frozen like a rabbit trapped by a coyote and rooted to the spot in fear, watching him climb on the bed. "Do you mean to... bite me?"

"No." He wanted her body. It would alleviate half of his pain anyway, help assuage his lust for her blood. Maddox didn't touch her. Instead, he stretched out in the middle of the bed, kicking off his shoes.

"What are you doing?" she asked, clearly surprised.

"Allowing you to satisfy your curiosity," he offered, wanting to make her feel less vulnerable. "Do what you want, Madeline."

It was hard not to laugh at the wide-eyed way she stared at him. But soon enough understanding chased away the clouds of confusion in her beautiful amethyst eyes. The mask was slowly sliding back into place.

And even though he knew she'd do something, get him off somehow because he was her new employer, his body was as tight as a bow. Anticipation left him excited in a way he'd forgotten. How long had it been since he'd wanted something as much as blood? More? Had he ever?

Madeline proceeded just as he knew she would. Like in a favorite dream, he watched her settle herself on her knees at his side. Her slender white hands hovered over him tentatively, like she was getting ready to pet that same poisonous snake but wasn't sure she should. He watched her throat work as she swallowed hard.

It took everything he had to stay still, not to pull her into his arms. He'd mean to comfort her but he'd just frighten her more. It wasn't a good place to start. He'd tucked his own hands behind his head, wanting to be as non-threatening as he could be.

After her moment of nervous hesitation, her hands lowered to his chest and a jolt of excitement like nothing he'd experienced outside of blood shot through him. Her fingers clutched lightly at the fabric of his shirt, gently probing the hard skin beneath.

Her gaze darted to his face in surprise. "You're... warm," she whispered. "I thought..."

Maddox nodded. "I fed, so I'm warm for now." Then he realized he might want to explain that. "No humans died. No worries. I'll explain it all one day when you're... ready."

She swallowed hard again. Her hands trembled. But they moved up his chest until they found the buttons at the top of his black shirt and slowly began to undo them.

Maddox's breath caught, and he didn't have to breathe, as she efficiently undid all of the buttons, her fingers swirling against his skin with feather soft touches. When she undid the top of his slacks and pulled down the zipper, it felt like it would destroy him to stay still.

Her fingers slid into his slacks, finding no other barrier, and wrapped around his cock like open flame. Damn! He'd forgotten how warm a human woman's touch felt, particularly on that part of his body. It was hot, soft, indescribable when she pulled him free of the slacks and began to caress him with both hands.

"Do you like this?" she whispered.

Was she kidding?

"You're late, G.I. Jane." Will Martin winked at her as she walked into the lab where they worked together and pulled the backpack from her shoulder.
Joey grinned at him, a big stupid grin no doubt, but she didn't care.
With his golden skin, sun-streaked hair and powerful body, Will was nobody's idea of a geeky scientist. Tall, handsome, with a bold nose, a sexy mouth and dark blue eyes that could glitter with humor or darken to the color of a stormy sea. Joey had never seen such a perfect blend of beauty and intelligence in any other man. In the realm of science there was no challenge he wouldn't take on, no subject he wouldn't tackle. Even Joey with her very limited knowledge of virology knew that Will was well on his way to making a difference in the world. It wouldn't surprise her if he were the one to someday find a cure for the AIDS virus, ending the suffering and death of millions. She had that much faith in him.
His brilliant mind fascinated her almost as much as his hot, muscular body and that was saying a lot. How many times had she satisfied herself while thinking about Will? How many late night dreams had he haunted? The touch of his rough hands on her aching breasts always felt so real in her dreams, so good. She'd swear that the solid length of his body between her thighs, the sensual glide of his cock in and out of her slick, ready passage were a reality while she was dreaming.
Until she woke up in a sweaty tangle of bed sheets. After several seconds of swearing and sometimes several more seconds with her vibrator, she could usually get back to sleep. But not always. Sometimes she'd lie there and think of clever ways to ask him out. A couple of times she even meant to carry out her plans to ask him out to dinner, then maybe even ask him to her bed. But she always chickened out at the last moment.
Joey grabbed her lab coat from its peg on the wall and watched Will as she slipped it on. Will had no idea that she was totally infatuated with him and she was afraid to make a move. They worked together after all. He was a brilliant scientist. She was just a girl who'd gone into the army to pay for college on the G.I. Bill and was now a way-older-than-average freshman. Joey continued to watch him as he scribbled notes on a steno pad and peered into the microscope before him, his muscular upper body straining against the lab coat he wore. How could someone like her ever hope to get the attention of someone like him?
"That's new." Dr. Rafe Bowen caught her off guard. Hooking the golden charm bracelet that circled her wrist with a long finger, he pulled her arm up to scrutinize it before releasing her.
"Yes," she said, recovering from the start. "It was a gift."
"From whom?" he asked in his clipped British accent, his hazel eyes watching her intently.
Her eyes darted to Will. But he didn't appear to be paying attention to their conversation. Damn him! "My sister," Joey answered blandly.
Rafe Bowen nodded, but continued to gaze at her speculatively. Rafe was her supervisor in the lab. He was a handsome man with his chestnut hair and well-defined, cultured features. He wasn't as tall as Will, his build average. From what little she knew of him he was probably in his early forties but he looked remarkably young for his age. He could pass for someone in his early thirties easily. It helped that he was easy to work for and generous with his time. He taught several virology courses in addition to his research.
Joey had long suspected that her boss had more than a passing interest in her. Rafe would stare at her when he thought she wasn't looking and it made Joey pretty damned uncomfortable. He'd always insisted that she call him by his given name, though she never had. But he'd given her a job when she'd given up hope of finding one. That alone had made her first year at Woods University much easier than it could have been for a twenty-five-year-old freshman.
"Why are you two here?" he asked, frowning.
Joey exchanged a glance with Will and let him answer.
"Next week is spring break," Will pointed out. "If we don't run the analysis on the Aspergillus cultures now, we'll lose them. They won't be any good when we get back."
Joey couldn't help with the analysis, wouldn't know how. She knew that Aspergillus was a mold and a respiratory allergen but that was about it.
But the money sure would come in handy.
"What about tomorrow and Friday?"
"Exams," Will and Joey answered in unison.
Rafe blew out a frustrated sigh. "You're not staying long. I have to be at a meeting in an hour."
"We'll lock up," Will assured him.
Joey's heart began thumping in earnest. Alone with Will Martin? Oh, yes, that would be fine.
Rafe's expression grew darker. It wasn't like him.
"You'll leave when I do," he said curtly. When it appeared Will was about to say something else, he added, "End of discussion."
Will's gaze followed him as Rafe marched to his office and closed the door behind him. He shook his head, giving Joey a sardonic half smile.
"What crawled up his ass today?" Will glanced up at the lab's clock, prompting her to do the same. It was five minutes to six in the evening. "Want to get started on prep?"
Joey nodded and walked to the autoclave on the counter opposite the lab door. Pulling open the door, she frowned when she found it empty.
"Crap! Someone took all the instruments I autoclaved last night," Joey grumbled. How would they have time to do anything now if she had to sterilize more instruments?
Will glanced over his shoulder at her but didn't seem concerned. "Turner probably took them for his class, that lazy asshole. Just sterilize some more. We've got time."
Joey motioned toward Rafe's office with her thumb.
"Let me worry about him." Will waved her on.
When Joey hesitated he smiled, a flash of white teeth. Her nipples tightened to hard little points in an instant.
"Go on." He motioned her to continue with her work. "How's your French class going?"
I know all the dirty words. I could recite them for you.
"I'm doing okay." Wasn't that a waste of a good conversation opener? Think! "I've really enjoyed the biology labs. The experiments have been very interesting."
"Yeah?" Will's back was to her. He kept right on with his work. "Which ones interested you the most?"
Her mind went blank. That would teach her to use something she had little interest in to get his attention. Shit! "The genetics experiments," she finally answered. She knew there had been a couple.
"I think the corn genetics experiment is the best that they offer." He paused a moment as he read over his notes. "Morten had a good idea there. Students get to germinate and grow F2 corn seeds and determine the inheritance pattern of the albino trait and what the P and F2 generations' genotypes must have been. Did you like that one?"
"I did." Joey remembered it anyway.
"We might make a scientist out of you yet." Will peered at her over his shoulder. "What are your plans for your time here? I don't think I've ever asked you that."
Her mouth went dry.
To jump your bones?

A visit to her favorite shops didn't improve Jada's spirits. She wandered aimlessly through a couple of stores where she usually spent major money and didn't see anything she couldn't live without. She couldn't even focus on looking. Worried, hand-wringing clerks followed her in a conga line in each store and she assured them the problem was her, not them.
She just couldn't get in the frame of mind to shop as she normally could. The whole situation with the tabloid still had her rattled. She thought she'd learned long ago not to worry about what people thought of her. The greedy reporters didn't really know her, after all.
Still, it was troubling how close they got to the truth sometimes and how they twisted everything around to cast her in the poorest light. She wasn't that bad. Couldn't they cut her some slack?
Jada was about to call it a day and go home for a soak in her hot tub, when she spotted a new shop. Now where had that come from? It sat between Diego's, an ethnic clothing store, and Manfred's coffee shop. It sure as hell went up fast. She was just there last week and the vitamin and organic health food store had been right there where it had been for at least two years. There was a time and place for health stuff -- her cougar years.
Madame Periwinkle's Erotic Delights the elegant lettering on the window read.
The purple storefront was outrageous and that alone had her smiling. Glancing in the front windows, she spotted edible panties, cock rings in assorted flavors, chocolate pasties. Oh, if only she had a man in her life right now. She'd take several of each of those little treats.
That's when she moved to the left and caught sight of what was in the display case on the other side.
Now we're talking. A three-tiered display of vibrators. That was exactly what she needed. If she couldn't get a boyfriend, she'd get a power tool instead. And what power tools they had. There was a spiky blue one in the middle, a pink sparkly vibrator on the top. The one on the bottom? Wow. Ten inches of fun in purple with a curved little thingie so she could play with her ass too.
It was close to what she wanted but not quite it. Well, she'd have to go in and look around, right?
Inside, the shop was just exquisite, filled with beautiful, sparkly toys and tantalizing scents. Her happy thoughts came back in a flash and her shopping instincts along with them. Now she felt better and more like herself.
The vibrators were off to the left near the display case up front. An entire wall of them in velvet-lined cases like fine jewelry. When she got closer, she could see why. Many of the stimulators sparkled like expensive jewels, winking in the lights as she approached.
"May I help you find something?"
The lovely voice came from behind her and she turned to face the most incredible looking woman. She wore black leather pants that showed off long legs and full, womanly hips. Her sheer purple blouse was unbuttoned to the middle of her chest to show off her considerable cleavage and the black bra beneath that so gracefully displayed it. Her hair was platinum blonde with purple highlights, cut straight to gently curve along the line of her jaw. Even her eyes were purple, sparkling at Jada like rare amethysts. And her skin? Incredible. All pale, smooth perfection. Jada wondered what spa she went to.
"Miss Danforth, isn't it?" The woman held out her hand.
Taking the hand she offered, Jada nodded.
"I'm Madame Periwinkle. It's an honor to have a woman of your wealth and taste in my humble shop." The woman's smile was lovely, her expression welcoming with just a hint of wicked. She smelled nice too, though Jada couldn't place the fragrance. Lavender, maybe…
"I'm glad to be here," Jada admitted to her. It only made sense that someone with that kind of style and confidence owned a shop like this.
"You're here for the perfect vibrator?"
Jada nodded. She had no trouble discussing sex frankly. Never had. And that was a good thing considering the video of her doing the nasty with her sleazy ex-boyfriend Chad was still circulating all over the Internet.
"I sort of like the one in the front window. The purple one? But I'd like something a little… fancier. Does that make any sense?"
Madame Periwinkle nodded knowingly. "It makes complete sense. You need something fit for a princess. I have just the thing."
Princess? She liked the woman already. The lady obviously knew how to treat a customer.

“You know what I think of this place?” Vanessa Arnault glanced around at the endless acres of trees and rich countryside of Cana, Virginia, and smiled.
“That your father should have punished you by giving you a French vineyard instead?” Brenda stood just behind her with her arms folded across her chest looking bored out of her mind.
Vanessa knew how her friend felt. When her father had announced his latest and most devious plan to force her to grow up, she’d considered being sent to Cana a fate worse than death too. They were out in the middle of nowhere. No clubs, primitive shopping at best out here in the sticks. There was nothing for miles but cows, farms, more cows, and people of all types who stared at her wherever she went and not in a good way.
“I know things seem bleak now,” Vanessa began. “But I’ll tell you something, Brenda. I’m going to take Daddy up on his challenge.”
Brenda’s expression went from bored to incredulous. “You’re going to become a farmer?”
“No.” Vanessa laughed. “He wants me to grow up and learn about the real world, right? He gave me this land and six months to figure out what to do with it to turn a profit. I’m going to prove to him I can do it.”
“He threatened to take away your credit cards again, huh?”
“Oh, shut up!” Brenda had been her best friend since they were two and knew her father nearly as well as she did. Her friend knew how the drill went. “Maybe he did. But what if, for once, I proved myself?”
Brenda’s burst of laughter didn’t surprise her. It did piss her off.
“If you were going to prove yourself to your father, Vanessa, why couldn’t you have done it last year when he sent you to his store on Rodeo Drive? You had the perfect opportunity to break into the fashion industry right there.”
“You mean working for the evil troll who manages that store?” Vanessa asked. “The only thing I learned from her is what happens when there’s no respect for basic human rights.”
“She fired you for boinking that French guy -- what was his name? -- in one of the dressing rooms,” Brenda reminded her.
“Oh yeah.” Vanessa smiled at that naughty little memory. “His name was Etienne. And she would have fired me anyway because she was a troll.”
“And you don’t like to do any real work,” Brenda pointed out.
“That was harsh, Brenda. I can do real work. I’m going to do a lot of real work right here in this place.”
“I still wish you could have found ambition last year on Rodeo Drive.” Brenda shook her head. “What the hell are we going to do out here? Develop a line of designer Christmas trees?”
“I thought of that.” And she had. “But then I had this brilliant idea at the spa.”
Brenda’s dark eyes met hers. “I’m afraid to ask.”
Walking over to one of two incredibly tall trees next to them, Vanessa knocked on its solid trunk, careful to do so gently because its bark was rough. The last thing she needed to do was crack one of her airbrushed nails until she could figure out if there was a spa in hillbilly hell.
“Look. This is a huge, gorgeous oak tree.”
“I’m impressed you knew it was oak,” Brenda told her.
Vanessa reached into her Prada tote and pulled out the Nature for Dumbbells book she’d bought before she’d caught her flight out of New York.
“There are a ton of trees here, all quality wood that can be made into something that can turn a profit.”
“You’re going to make furniture?” Brenda asked.
“Even better.” Her friend would love her idea since she was a pet lover too. “We’re going to make designer pet homes.”
“Pet homes?” Brenda’s pretty smile lifted her spirits.
“Vanessa’s Precious Pet Palaces.” She held her arms out for effect. “What do you think?”
“Love it!”
“The first one is going to be for Pierre, my baby poodle,” Vanessa explained. “A perfect, miniature Taj Mahal. There are all kinds of crafty people who live here who can make anything out of wood.”
Brenda had caught onto her excitement, her black eyes gleaming. “My kitty? Tinkles? What about her?”
“Hmm, how about a miniature Buckingham Palace?”
“Make it Chateau Gaillard and you’ve got a deal.”
“Wonderful choice.” The two trees she stood before drew her attention. Oak trees and they looked remarkably similar. Well, you don’t see that every day. They appeared to be the biggest and best two oak trees as far as the eye could see. They’d be perfect to use for the first two pet homes for Pierre and Tinkles.
“What are you doing?” Brenda asked as Vanessa pulled a can of red spray paint out of her purse.
“Marking these two trees. They’re the best I’ve seen. We’ll use them to make our first two precious palaces.”
“Since when do you carry spray paint? You’re going to start a graffiti business too?”
Vanessa drew a huge red X on the trunk of each tree, doing a good job in her opinion.
“No, my book said I’d need some way to mark the trees I wanted for specific purposes.” Vanessa shrugged, tossing the can back into her bag. “Let’s head back to the house.”
At least they had a decent place to stay. The house was nearly a hundred years old and it offered a wonderful view of most of her new property even if it was lacking in basic necessities. Vanessa would love it even more once the hot tub arrived and she had it installed. The closets would need to be expanded and all the old-fashioned décor would have to go. Then there was the satellite dish, high-speed Internet, a home gym…
Once she’d made some modifications and found a decent chef willing to come out to the sticks, living there just might be tolerable.
