Tasty Tuesday: Brandon's Apple Pie

It's apple picking season and what could be better for kicking off fall than an apple pie. Brandon and Seth from Paws on Me like apple pie. They even like to eat it in non-traditional ways ;)

Here's the recipe for Brandon's apple pie.....

Crust for a 2 crust pie
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 pinch baking powder
8T cold butter cut into small pieces
2T shortening
8-9T ice water with a few drops of lemon juice added
Mix dry ingredients. Cut in butter and shortening. Do not overmix. Add water and mix with a fork. Turn out on a cutting board or other hard surface. Split in half and form into two flattened disks. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or up to 2 days.

Filling
See Brandon's favorite filling recipe here.

Bake 15 minutes at 425F and then 30-45 minutes at 350F.

To find out how to use an apple pie to spice up your life, read Paws on Me.

Jackson McRae is a powerful werewolf whose pack is under attack. Just when Jackson and his family believe they've exhausted their magical arsenal, Jackson's father finds an ancient spell that could be exactly what they need. But there's a catch. Jackson or one of his brothers must perform the spell by rekindling a former love.
Jackson's ex-girlfriend Cara has just moved back to town. He never stopped loving her, and she has every reason to hate him. But she may well be his pack's only chance at survival. Jackson has three days to earn her forgiveness and convince her to perform a sexual ritual with him on the Winter Solstice.
The Solstice is a time when light is reborn, and all are assured that the darkness will not rule the earth forever. Will Cara accept the healing magic of the season?

Jackson was the last of his brothers to arrive at the family farm. As he sat down at the breakfast bar and grabbed a cup of coffee, his father pulled a pan of biscuits out of the oven and placed them on the counter.
"I've found a spell we can use," his father said as Jackson and his two brothers began filling their plates with biscuits, bacon, and eggs.
Jackson froze, a biscuit halfway to his mouth. It was just like his father to drop such important information without warning.
His father smiled at him, knowing exactly what he was thinking. "Unfortunately, there's a catch."
"What?" Jackson's older brother, Malcolm, asked, not bothering to finish chewing first.
"It's a sexual spell that rekindles love between the two participants."
Jackson's excitement wavered. His mother had passed away three years ago, and no one could imagine his father loving another the way he had his wife. Malcolm never went out with the same woman more than twice, and Caden had just ended a relationship with a total bitch he never should have given the time of day. Jackson was no closer to finding his true love than the rest of them. "Can anyone in the pack perform the spell?"
His father frowned. "No, it must be done by the pack leader or his immediate kin."
Malcolm's lips curled in a wicked smile. "Cara Setley is back in town. I heard she's got a job at the Hedford Inn."
Jackson forced himself to unclench his fists. Hitting his brother would not be a good idea.
Cara had been Jackson's girlfriend for two years. He'd been on the verge of telling her the family secret and proposing when she'd told him she'd found a job in Charleston. She was finishing up her degree in baking and pastry arts at the local community college. The job she'd landed would provide excellent experience, doing baking for an exclusive bed and breakfast in Charleston's historic district.
Cara had asked Jackson to consider moving with her. From her perspective, his accounting degree and his two years of job experience with a large firm made him a great candidate for landing a job in a new city. But what she didn't know was that he couldn't leave his pack.
Like their fully animal relatives, werewolves need the support of others of their kind. Another wolf might have petitioned the Charleston pack for membership, but since Jackson's father was pack leader, Jackson had far too many responsibilities to consider leaving. Cara offered to look harder for a local job, but Jackson didn't want her to settle for less than the best.
He'd been a hot-headed idiot at the time, his body running on the raging hormones of a werewolf coming into his full powers. Instead of talking to her about how important the opportunity in Charleston was for her, he'd cheated on her and let her catch him. Fool that he was, he thought he was doing her a favor, encouraging her to do what was right for her career in the only way he could.
"Cara hasn't spoken to me since she left town three years ago. Considering how I treated her, I don't think she'll want to talk to me now."
Caden frowned. "But you did love her."
Jackson looked at his younger brother. "Yes."
"Do you love her now?"
Jackson drew in a long slow breath. "Yes."
"Then find out if she still loves you." His father's tone held the mark of authority. Normally Jackson wouldn't dare question his father about pack business, but if anyone thought Cara was going to perform a sexual ritual with Jackson, they were insane.
"This isn't going to work."
Rather than the explosion Jackson expected, his father sighed and sat down on one of the bar stools. "If we don't find a way to protect ourselves soon, Hanley's pack will gain control of us one by one until we're all slaves to his whim."
Already some of the weaker members of their pack had succumbed to the lure of Hanley's magic, allowing themselves to be used to perform criminal acts for the rogue wolf. The bastard and his pack of ex-criminals, all of whom he and his lieutenants had infected themselves, had been preying on small, weak packs in the Appalachian region for over a year.
This was the first time they'd taken on a well-organized pack with more than ten members. When wolves were born or created, they gained certain magical powers, but the strength of these powers varied widely. Hanley was an extremely gifted magic worker. Jackson, his father and brothers, and other strong workers in their pack had tried numerous protection and strengthening spells, but none were strong enough to block him.
Jackson sighed. "Why do you believe this spell will work?"
"Rather than simply adding strength to each pack member's shields, this spell uses the energy of birth and renewal available on the Winter Solstice. If one who has denied love agrees to surrender herself and allow the Lord and Lady to fill her with the energy of love, a burst of magic is sent forth. The magic will cover each pack member with a force field of their own, similar to that which closes around us when we cast a sacred circle. The shield should last until Ostara, the spring equinox. Hopefully by then Hanley will have moved on."
"The Solstice is in three days."
His father nodded. "So it is."
"Even if Cara will agree to see me, she's not going to accept what I am and agree to do the ritual in three days' time."
Malcolm clapped his brother on the shoulder. "You definitely have your work cut out for you."

Stallion's Accord by Silvia Violet

Stallion's Accord
by Silvia Violet

Cover art: Bryan Keller
ISBN: 978-1-60521-601-0
Genre(s): Futuristic, Paranormal
Theme(s): Shapeshifters
Series: Oriana
Length: Novella
Page Count: 48

Blurb:
Raya Varvara is what Orianians refer to as a techno snob. She thrives on her fast-paced urban life on New Earth. At least she did until she met Calder Brinkley, a horse shifter and regional governor on Oriana. Calder likes wide-open spaces, the fresh air of early morning, and turning off technology in favor of face-to-face conversation. He also likes Raya. He likes her so much he's willing to alter some of what he enjoys about his low-tech planet.
When Raya returns to Oriana after a long, painful absence, she learns about the changes Calder introduced. Her certainty that she could never live on this backwater planet begins to falter. Can Calder convince her that being together is more important than either of them having their way, or will her stubbornness keep them forever apart?

Raya leaned forward, tangling her hands in Obsidian's mane, relishing the feel of his strength beneath her. She was thankful her lover needed to return home quickly after their tryst by the stream. Riding his alternate form exhilarated her. Discussing the fact that a confession of love had escaped her -- as Calder worked her into a frenzy -- would make her cringe.
She didn't want to be in love. She couldn't live on Oriana, and Calder wouldn't leave. No matter how good the sex was, their lifestyles were incompatible. That's why she'd run from what she felt months ago. She'd tried to deny what he meant to her, but seeing him again had brought all her feelings to the surface. Then he'd touched her, and she was lost.
But she wasn't a coward. She wouldn't deny what she'd blurted out in a fit of passion. She was in love with Calder, and she had to face the consequences of those feelings. But the longer she could put it off, the better. Perhaps Calder would give her one night to revel in their need for each other before questioning her intentions.
All too soon, the stable came in sight, and Obsidian slowed to a trot. Finlay, the stable master, was there to greet them. He gave Raya a sly wink. "I see you've returned, and you're riding Obsidian as well as ever."
She smiled and ignored the heat that crept into her cheeks. "Damn right I am."
Obsidian snorted as they both laughed.
"I'll see to him," Raya said, sliding from her lover's back and grabbing a currycomb from the wall, ready to give Obsidian a loving brush down.
"He'd certainly love that, Miss Varvara, but his guests have already begun to arrive."
Obsidian whinnied loudly and gestured toward the door with his nose.
Finlay nodded. "I'll take care of it, sir."
Raya raised her brows in question.
"He needs privacy to shift, ma'am. Not all of tonight's guests are aware that Obsidian and Lord Brinkley are one and the same." Calder was an unregistered shapeshifter. His mother belonged to a centaur-like race known as the Canterini, but as a half-blood, he could shift between human and horse form.
"Ah," she nodded. Guests. Ugh. The last thing she wanted to do was stuff herself into one of the fancy dresses she'd been forced to purchase for her business on Oriana and socialize with Calder's guests. Maybe she could feign fatigue from the long journey. Or better yet from the thorough fucking he'd given her.
Finlay closed the stable doors and locked them. Obsidian shimmered briefly, and Calder stood where he'd been, naked and obviously ready to go another round with her. Finlay tossed him some clothes and boots, and he dressed quickly. He looked damn fine in the tight tan riding pants and tall polished boots. His black shirt strained across his powerful shoulders and muscular chest. He left the top two buttons open in a manner considered rakish on Oriana.
"Lord Partington has arrived with his daughter," Finlay said as he unlocked the doors. The stable master looked pointedly at Raya. "Miss Varvara's arrival will be of interest to them, I'm sure."
Calder's eyes brightened, and he smiled wickedly. "I do believe it will."
Raya didn't like the sound of that. "Who is Lord Partington?"
"An idiot who thinks I'd pay his debts in exchange for his daughter's hand in marriage."
"Fuck that." Raya's stomach churned. Calder was hers. She didn't want to be in love, and she didn't want to live on Oriana, but... damn it, he was hers.
Calder chuckled. "Try to keep your claws in."
Raya glared at him. "Why are they here?"
"I'm hosting a party tonight to celebrate the conclusion of the legislative session."
Raya pondered his words. "Is that customary?"
Calder nodded. "When the session ends, most of the regional governors return to their own lands, and life in and around the capital slows down for several months."
Raya tried to imagine the pace of life being any slower than it already was and failed. She'd originally met Calder when her job at Intergalactic Investors Bank brought her to Oriana to broker a deal for a client. She'd hated everything about the backwater planet except for the fine horseflesh Calder owned and Calder himself.
She'd never let herself get involved with a client before, but she loved beautiful horses and beautiful men, and Calder literally brought all the untamed strength of a stallion into his human form. He'd been impossible to resist, but when he suggested she stay, she refused. No way could an urban girl from New Earth be happy here, not even with a stud of a man like Calder.
She'd ignored him for the intervening months just like she'd ignored the terrifying mix of hot and cold that raced through her when she thought of him. She had no place in her life for romance.
When she'd received the paperwork confirming her client's purchase of Calder's horses, she'd chosen to surprise Calder rather than be forced to explain why she'd failed to contact him for months. She caught a flight to Oriana that afternoon, barely taking time to comm her supervisor and let her know she'd be out of the office for the next week. Now here she was, admitting to feelings she'd didn't want to have, confused and longing to ignore the world and spend the night making love to Calder. But he had a house full of overdressed, stuffy Orianians who would find her exotic if not downright crude.
As if hearing her thoughts, he glanced down pointedly, looking at her nipples standing out against the damp cloth of her dress. Between the heat and the dip she'd taken in the stream her dress looked rather disreputable.
"You're going to scandalize my guests."
Raya snorted. "Fucking prudes."
Calder laughed. "My guests include some of the biggest gossips on Oriana. When we appear at the house together with you in that ensemble, rumors will spread like wildfire. By tomorrow everyone who's anyone in Oriana's capital will know we're lovers. The only way I'll be able to save your reputation is by marrying you."
Marry me? Marry me? He has to be kidding.

01 Seth's Blog
I'm Seth Morrison. I'm a cop, a police lieutenant to be precise. I've been on the force more years than I want to think about. I've seen good men get killed, turn dirty, lose themselves in the bottle, lose their fucking minds, but I'm still here doing what I do. I don't know any other life. People tell me I need a break, a vacation, to relax. I don't want to fucking relax. I just want to do my job and keep this city from falling apart.
I park my car, grab my coffee from the cup holder, and charge up the front steps of the station. I could take the side door, it's closer to my office, but I love the chaos of the bullpen. When I open the door, I breathe deeply, enjoying the variety of smells: coffee that's been on the warmer far too long, the sickeningly sweet smell of candy and doughnuts, pine-scented cleaner from the scrubbing the janitors gave the floors last night, and something unnamable that simply smells like cops and hard work. I shake my head as I try to imagine not being here nearly 24/7. This is where I belong.
My stomach rumbles. I should've had dinner, but after pretending an afternoon nap was a night's sleep, I'm running late. I'll grab something from the vending machine while I dream about a juicy burger and thick home fries. It sure would be nice to have someone cook for me. I don't seem to get along with stoves. Years ago, I tried being married. That worked for about 30 seconds. My wife wanted me to work shorter hours. I wanted her to talk less, or maybe never.
Friends tell me I should make an effort to date, but I'm more comfortable at a gruesome homicide scene than making small talk at dinner with a woman or a man. Yeah, I like both. I stopped going out with men when I entered the academy. I just couldn't deal with the shit the guys would give me. Now, I don't advertise what I like, but I pick up a guy now and then. I'm discreet, but if somebody finds out, I'll deal.
One-night stands I can handle, but relationships are beyond me. People think police work is draining, but I'd rather spend all day in the field and all night at my desk filling out fucking paperwork -- and often I do -- than try to decode relationship signals. I inevitably screw things up and never understand why.
Sex I need. Romance I don't.
My phone rings. I pull it out of my pocket hoping the call will save me from the mountain of paperwork on my desk. It's Drew Danvers, detective and vampire. That's right, a vampire who works for the good guys. We've got a werewolf in homicide too. And he's a damn fine cop.
I remember when the shifters came out of the closet, scaring the hell out of us humans. One by one other monsters made themselves known. Most people assumed they were all assholes who wanted to eat us, but I quickly learned not to judge a man because he sucked blood or turned into a wolf. I judge men based on how they treat others.
I answer the call. "What's up, Detective?"
"Two dead werewolves found in a closet at Shift. Hacked up pretty bad. The scene's a circus. Jenkins called in sick. I'm on my own, and --"
"I'll be there in ten."
"Thanks, sir."
"No problem. Murder scene or paperwork, which would you choose?"
* * *
I step inside the club. A crime lab team is there and several uniformed officers are talking with employees. I spot Drew in the entryway of an office. He's frowning as he questions a tall hairy hunk of a man. I've seen this man around the area several times, and just like every other time, he makes my cock sit up and take notice.
Our most recent encounter was a week ago. When I want to grab a beer and be left the fuck alone, I go to Mitch's, a dive just down the street from Shift. Last time I spent the evening there, he sat next to me at the bar and came on strong. I was in a shitty mood. I wanted him, and it pissed me off. He's not my type. He's young, hip, and outrageously flirtatious. I walked away, but I regretted it later that night when I couldn't stop fantasizing about him.
The man looks my way and catches me staring. His grin says he knows the direction my thoughts are going. Fucking bastard winks at me. Drew scowls.
I turn to face him. He grins down at me, that same cocky-as-fuck little smile he'd given me earlier, making me even more aware of how close we are and how big he is. At 6'2", I'm hardly small, but he's got several inches on me. And while I've got a rather thick pelt, the fur visible above the vee of his t-shirt is astounding.
He smiles mischievously. "You gonna cuff me if you take me in?"
"Impeding a murder investigation will get you thrown in jail."
He rolls his eyes. "I found two dead guys in my closet when I came to work tonight. My business is shut down, and I'll be losing money every minute that you're here. But at least I have a sense of humor."
"Well, I don't."
He shakes his head. "Are you taken too?"
I take another step back. "You're making a lot of assumptions."
I look over at Drew and realize he and Jason are grinning like loons. Fuck. All I need is the two of them ragging me.
I glare at Drew. "Detective, do you think you can question this man without killing him?"
"Probably."
"Fine. Fleetfoot, head back to the lab. Take my car. I'll get a ride with Danvers." I throw him my keys, and he snatches them out of the air as he gives Drew's hand a final squeeze. Jason is better in the lab than any tech we have. We only send him into the field when we're desperately short-handed. I run a hand through my hair, wishing I knew how I'm going to hold the homicide division together if we don't get more funds.
He holds out his hand. "I'm Brandon Lord. I own Shift."
"Lieutenant Morrison." I shake his hand. His skin is surprisingly smooth, his grip tight and warm. I want to feel those big hands running over me. I want to rub his furry body with my own. Fuck! I should assign someone else to this case right now and get the hell away from him. But some crazy restlessness he's dredged up in me makes me fight my instincts.
"Nice to meet you, Lieutenant." His voice is low and rich. And his grin lets me know he's well aware of my body's reaction to him.
I need to get away. His smell alone is making me hard. "I'm not here to play games. Drop the act and treat this case seriously, or I'll find an excuse to throw your ass in jail."
He grins. Fuck, he knows he's got me rattled. "I'd never kill anyone, Lieutenant. I'm just a cuddly teddy bear."
The bear shifter and the bear. Ridiculous. I need to leave now. This man is no cuddly toy. I don't think he's our murderer, but he's far smarter than he wants me to believe and likely far more dangerous. "I know what cuddling leads to."
Brandon laughs, a deep, infectious sound. I can't help but respond. Now I want him more than ever. Taking this case is a supremely stupid idea, staying on it now is unprofessional.
But I won't walk away.

01 Jason's Blog
I'm Jason Fleetfoot. I've made a lot of stupid mistakes in my life. The stupidest of all was taking a job with some assholes intent on manufacturing illegal chemical weapons.
My sister, Natalie, lost her job when her company folded, and I lost mine because my fucking boss was a bastard. I've got authority issues. And control issues. All right, I'm seriously fucked up, but I wasn't going to let my sister starve because I couldn't keep it together.
So I made a deal with the devil and damn near got myself and Natalie killed.
She saved me. She and her cop boyfriend, Wolf. The name's not a joke. He's a werewolf. Did I mention we're shifters, Natalie and I? Deer shifters. If you think my human form is impressive, you should see me as a ten-point buck.
So yeah, a werewolf and a deer shifter. Somehow they're making it work.
As much as I hate being beholden to Wolf, I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for him. Once the cops cleared me, Wolf helped me get a job in the crime lab where I can use my knowledge of chemistry and computers for the good guys. As the newest hire, I work nights, babysitting the equipment and working on what comes in during the wee hours. For the most part, I like it. It's quiet and I get a chance to play around with new techniques and do a bit of programming. There's only one problem, Detective Drew Danvers.
He works nights too. Not because he's new, because he's a God-damned vampire. They say he was Changed against his will. But what the hell was he doing picking up a vampire at a bar? I certainly have no intention of fucking a vampire. No matter how damn fuckable Drew is. Yeah, I like men, what of it? And Drew is a fine specimen of a man, like some Viking warrior. He's at least 6' 3" with sculpted arms and pecs that make him look like he could lift a truck one-handed. Considering he's a vamp, he probably can.
Getting involved with Drew would be stupid on too many levels to count. And I'm finished with making stupid decisions. So why does my body want so desperately to be impaled on him -- his cock, his fangs, anything he'd like to stick in me. Natalie's right, my dick really doesn't communicate with my brain.
I don't just want to fuck him, I want to be taken by him, and I never want that. Like I said, I have control issues. But with Drew... No, there's never going to be anything with Drew.
I hear the buzz that signals someone entering the lab. I glance around from behind the mass spec machine. Shit! Speak of the devil or in this case his undead minion.
My pride will not let me hide even though I want to. I'm not afraid of him, even if I should be. I'm just afraid my unruly cock will give away my interest. His gaze slides up and down my body. He's looked at me like this before. But I have never been sure whether it's sexual interest or him salivating over me like I'm a piece of the lush chocolate cake my grandma used to make on Sundays. "You alone in here, Fleetfoot?"
Shit, maybe he does mean to make a meal out of me. No point in lying though. He probably already knows the answer. Aren't vampires supposed to be damn near omnipotent? "Newton called in sick, and everyone else is out in the field."
"Good." Danvers smiles, still eyeing me like I'm prey. If I were in deer form I'd bolt, white tail flagging danger. But I'm a man and his ice blue gaze has me glued to the spot. God above, he's gorgeous when he smiles. My cock is starting to get uncomfortable in my jeans.
My heart pounds as I try to interpret his response. Does he mean "Good, I'm going to give you to the best fuck of your life," or "Good I'm going to drain your blood and leave you for dead?"
"I need you to analyze these samples by the end of your shift, but I'd like you to keep it between the two of us."
I take the evidence bags and examine the contents; dirt, a few fibers, a nearly microscopic paint chip. "What am I looking for?"
"I took these from a car. I'm trying to tie the driver to a location outside the city. Send the results only to me and leave no record."
His assumption that I would do his bidding pissed me off. "Why?"
He smiles again. This time he lets his fangs show. "Because no one else needs to know about this particular investigation. I've decided to trust you. You want to be worthy of my trust."
Despite his being one of the undead, I'd heard he was a damn good detective. But what was he up to? Why the secrecy? "Are you threatening me?" He smirks. "Would you like me to?"
What the fuck kind of question is that? And why am I biting my lip to keep from saying yes?

Lucy Vasilia applied her electronic signature to a document and folded her nano tablet before looking up at Ian Hadley. She made a final, slow perusal of his well-toned physique, suppressing a sigh that their meeting had come to an end. "That should conclude our business. I've sent a copy of the contract to your ship's computer."
He smiled, a slow, sensuous curve of his lips. "Excellent." He made no move to leave her office.
"Did you have further questions?" Lucy managed to keep her tone professional, though he made her want to purr.
"I do have one question." He paused, his bright blue eyes hot and unrelenting. "Would you like company?"
Lucy tilted her head and stared at him. "For what?"
His smile deepened. "When I fuck you."
Lucy sucked in her breath. "Presumptuous, aren't you?"
"I've seen your eyes drifting down to my cock. You want this as much as I do."
She stared pointedly at his crotch. His erection threatened to burst one of the seams of his expensive suit. "You certainly are making a rather impressive display."
He smirked. "Indeed."
"I assume you'd like your head of security to join us?"
"Ah, so you did do your homework."
"I never meet with anyone I haven't researched thoroughly. You hired Langley at Captain Devlin's suggestion." It was a statement, not a question.
Ian nodded. "Devlin said to tell you hello, by the way."
"Did he indeed? I take it Chief Langley isn't fully human."
Ian shook his head. "He's not, but I have the impression you won't be disturbed by his particular needs."
She grinned. "I'm not as fragile as I look."
"I never thought you were. So what will it be? How much hard use are you game for today?"
She nearly choked. "I can take whatever you and your lover want to give."
"You may live to regret that statement. When?"
She held up a finger signaling him to wait and pressed a button on her desk unit, paging her receptionist. "Cynthia."
"Yes, Director?"
"Cancel my next two appointments."
Ian raised his brows, studying her curiously.
A sharp voiced erupted from the comm. Unit. "With all due respect, Director, the delegation from --"
"My business with Mr. Hadley is taking longer than expected. I will simply have to reschedule."
"Yes, Director." Cynthia sounded resigned.
Lucy looked at Ian, fighting the urge to tremble. The sexual heat in his eyes was devastating. She'd never slept with a business associate, and she'd certainly never cancelled an appointment so she could get a quick fuck in her office.
Then again, she couldn't recall a man who'd ever turned her on as hard and fast as Ian did. She'd glimpsed him with his lover as she'd headed to dinner the night before. Connor Langley was a glorious mix of beauty and pure animal power. He moved with a panther's grace, but she had no doubt he could kill most men one-handed. She'd been working her ass off. She deserved a treat. "Call Langley now."
He pressed a button on his wrist unit. "Langley, you're needed in the Director's office."
"Is there a problem, sir?"
"No, we are simply in need of a... consultation."

01 Wolf's Blog

I'm Wolf, Officer Aidan "Wolf" Savage. I'm a werewolf. But unlike most of my kind these days, I'm one of the good guys even if I do scare the hell out of most people the first time they meet me.

I'm a damned good cop. If I'm tracking a criminal, he doesn't stand a chance of getting away. I love the chase, the takedown, the chance to be scary-as-hell, but there's one thing I hate about this job: stakeouts.

That's what tonight is all about, sitting in a hot, muggy car, eating doughnuts and watching the woods for signs of life. Man what I wouldn't give for a beer right now. And a warm house and a warm woman. OK, that train of thought isn't doing a damn thing for me. Because my partner and I are stuck right here, until we see something, or the sun comes up.

Jacobson, my partner, crushes his paper coffee cup and tosses it in the bag that serves as a trashcan. "I so don't want to do this shit tonight."

I don't think his comment deserves a response so I take a sip of my own coffee, which is damn near empty too.

Jacobson stares hard at the fence outside his window. "Do you actually think we're going to see anything? Anyone could have dumped those bodies by the park. Why would they come back now?"

We're parked along the outer perimeter of City Park. In its heyday it was a place for city residents to relax, have a picnic, get some exercise, and remember what trees actually looked like. When the economy went south, the city stopped maintaining it. Now it's an overgrown eyesore used primarily by the homeless, drug addicts, and kids looking for a thrill.

The department is constantly getting complaints about the vermin that thrive in the undergrowth, both animal and human. But recently, the volume of calls about trouble in the park has increased, and two teenagers were found dead at the park's northern gates last night. They'd been shot, execution style.

I take another sip of coffee before responding to Jacob's questions. "We've had too many complaints and none from the usual suspects. Something's up."

"Gang initiation?" Jacobson suggests.

I shake my head. "I don't think so."

His eyes narrow. "You smell something, don't you?"

I nod. Under the smells of sex, beer, and greasy food, there's an odd chemical odor. I can't place it, but I'm certain it doesn't belong in the park. It hadn't been there a few months ago when I'd pulled the short straw and been sent to run off a bunch of kids who'd come out here to party.

Before I can describe the smell to Jacob, I hear distant footsteps pounding the pavement. "Someone's running this way. Someone fast."

Jacob nods. I doubt he can hear a thing, but he's learned to trust my non-human ears without question. A few seconds later, a woman comes into view. She's wearing a sundress and a pair of high-heeled sandals so I doubt she's running for her health. Not that any sane woman would be in this part of town at night.

She has straight, reddish brown hair that swings past her waist. Her heavy round breasts are barely contained by her dress. Long shapely legs reach out for the ground, making my cock sit up and say hello. Her strides are so long she's practically leaping.

She's moving faster than any human should be in shoes like that. The wolf inside begs me to chase her for the sheer thrill of apprehending such a hot piece of flesh. But my cop instincts tell me this woman is our key to what's actually going on in the park.

Jacobson reaches for the door handle, but I lay a hand on his arm, stopping him. "Not yet."

"She's not out for an evening jog, Wolf. Someone's chasing her."

"Exactly. And we need to know who and why."

Jacobson frowned. "While letting her get killed in the process?"

I know my partner's right to protest, but my instincts tell me to take the risk.

The whine of a motorcycle engine grows louder. The woman runs past us and reaches the entrance to the park at the end of the block. The motorcycle driver guns his engine. He's only a block away. I watch as he pulls out a gun.

"Now?" Jacob asks.

"Now."

We exit the car and scale the fence, dropping down into the park, making our way through the thick undergrowth until we see the path. The motorcycle turns into the park and blows past us.

The woman darts into the woods up ahead. As she disappears, I swear I see the upraised white tail of a deer.

The driver fires a shot into the woods. Jacobson raises his gun and aims for the bike's tires. He misses. My heart pounds. If my instincts were wrong, if this woman died because I hesitated, I'll never forgive myself.

Suddenly an enormous stag leaps out of the woods directly in the motorcycle's path. The driver swerves. The bike falls on its left side, crushing the driver under it, as it skids to a stop.

My werewolf speed brings me to the carnage ahead of Jacobson, I touch the driver's neck, checking for a pulse. Nothing. He's dead.

I turn toward Jacobson and shake my head. The deer lies several feet ahead, his legs twitching. I ready my gun to put him out of his misery, but I stop cold when his scent hits my nostrils.

Jacobson reaches for his weapon. "Shouldn't we --"

I hold up my hand signaling him to stop. "He's a shifter." I start to tear off my uniform, preparing to shift. Now I know why I'd seen a white tail disappear into the woods. The long legs, the hair the color of a deer's fur, the superhuman speed. Our runner's no more human than I am. I turn to Jacobson. "Call this in and get us some backup. I'm going after the woman."

"Wait," he calls, but I'm already in my lupine form. I breathe in the scents of the night, damp leaves, warm earth, a few rodents. Then I catch her scent, deer mixed with the delicious musk of sweaty human female. My wolf salivates, eager for a chase.

I keep my nose low to the ground until the scent grows stronger. My ears prick. I can hear her breathing. I'm close. So close. She's hiding, but I know I'll flush her out. I wait for several long seconds.

She bursts from a tangle of bushes twenty feet or so ahead. And the chase is on. I tear after her, my wolf rejoicing in the freedom to run, to chase, to catch. But while my wolf is hungry for deer meat, my human side is hungry for this female in a whole different way.

I'm closing in. Her scent surrounds me. Sweat and fear and... whoa... sex. Bambie is as turned on by the chase as I am. Maybe this interrogation is going to be a whole lot more fun than I'd imagined.

Niall slid silently from the bed, cursing his lack of a weapon. Someone was on Vivian's balcony. He could hear a single heartbeat. He reached out with his mind, but whoever it was had shields too thick for him to break without giving himself away. The balcony door slid open. Niall stepped into the living room, cloaking himself. No human would be able to see him now. Of course, he doubted the intruder was human, but he could always hope.
A tall man stepped into Vivian's apartment.
Niall sprang.
The man captured his wrist in an unbreakable grip. "You could have told me you'd reclaimed your body."
"Ethan." Niall's partner dropped his arm, and Niall stepped back.
Ethan growled. "Why didn't you call me?"
"I needed to regain my strength."
Ethan arched a brow. "Based on your smell and appearance I'd say you needed to fuck someone's brains out."
Niall ran his hand through his ruffled hair. "I would have contacted you as soon as we woke."
"It's not like you to be distracted from a mission."
"After months of being trapped by that bastard I deserve a night to feed and fuck without the Consulate coming down on my ass."
Ethan grinned. "That's true enough. Tell me how you got free."
Niall explained how he'd sent out mental feelers from the story world where he'd been trapped by Lorcan, a wizard so powerful even his band of elite vampire assassins had been unable to capture him after months of trying. Vivian, a romance writer, had been the only one to respond to his calls.
She'd listened to him tell the story of his fight with Lorcan and his capture, thinking he was a character out of her own imagination. When she'd finished writing his tale, the magic of her words brought him back into his body and transported him to her apartment.
Ethan frowned. "When did you return to your self?"
Niall glanced at the clock on the wall. It was nearly 10:00. "About twelve hours ago."
Without warning Ethan lunged for him. Niall countered the attack, blocking Ethan's attempt to smash his jaw. He sent Ethan flying backward with a swift kick.
Ethan held up his hands in surrender.
Niall snarled. "What the fuck was that about?"
"A test. You're back to nearly your full strength."
"So?"
"You should need days to recover after going so long without feeding. There's something you're not telling me."
"Apparently, I'm stronger than you thought I was." Vivian had restored his energy almost instantly. She responded to him like a Companion, yet even a Companion shouldn't have such power before being Turned. He needed more time to examine their connection before sharing it with anyone, even Ethan.
Ethan growled. "You're lying. We can't afford secrets on this mission."
Lorcan was the greatest threat to their kind Niall had encountered since joining the Protectors. "There is nothing you need to know right now. I'll tell you when I can."
"You'd better."
Niall hoped there would be nothing to tell. The thought of letting Vivian go made his stomach knot, but she didn't deserve to be forced into a bond with him, especially one that linked their lifeforces so closely. He risked his life every day as a Protector, and when a vampire died, his Companion rarely survived.
Ethan stepped back onto the balcony and retrieved a bag. He tossed it at Niall. "Duval expects us at sunset. I brought you some clothes and weapons. You'll get a new phone tonight."
"Damn! I was hoping to avoid him for a bit longer." Like until he figured out whether Vivian really was his Companion or if something even stranger was going on. Companion bonds had become rare in the last few hundred years and he'd never heard of one that formed this fast.
Ethan shook his head. "It's a formal summons. He'll drag you there if you don't come willingly."
He would too. The bastard. "How pissed is he?"
"Well, you did get caught."
"God damn it! Nobody knew Lorcan would be able to suck me into his enchanted book. I'll not be --"
He realized Ethan was laughing at his vehemence. "Fuck you."
"You're the best Protector the Consulate has. The fact that you got caught shows how strong Lorcan really is. We've been unable to locate him since you disappeared. Then last night, Duval sensed you again, and I sensed Lorcan's magic. Vivian breaking his hold on you must have weakened him temporarily. We know where he's hiding."
"Then let's go get him."
"How well did that go last time?"
Niall snarled. "I want the bastard dead."
"As do we all, but this is too big for the two of us. We need Duval. Hell, we may need every last Protector and all the allies we can bring in. We've got a few shifters watching the townhouse he's using for his base. They'll alert us if he leaves."
"This can't wait. We need to go in now."

Vivian's heart pounded. Was he going to kiss her?

Niall wrapped one of her curls around his finger and tugged gently. Come here.

She forced herself to raise her gaze from his full lips. His rich brown eyes burned with heat. Her breath caught. She couldn't look away. Never look a vampire in the eye. Wasn't that a rule?

That's a myth. We don't need eye contact to touch your mind.

His voice inflamed her, sending electric current through her body. Her pussy tightened with painful need. She was wet and ready, and all he'd done was look at her.

He smiled at her, and she feared she might combust. His thick, dark hair and pale, smooth skin made him look as seductive as any movie vampire. She reached up, sliding her hands into his hair, needing to confirm that it felt as silky as it looked.

He groaned when she touched him and leaned down. Closer... closer. She felt as if the world were moving in slow motion. Then his lips touched hers, and she felt his need as strongly as if he'd poured it into her.

You taste so good. He licked and nibbled at her lower lip with agonizing meticulousness. She wanted more.

She slid her hands down his back and cupped his buttocks, pulling him to her. He growled and deepened the kiss. She rubbed against him, reveling in the hardness of his cock against her belly.

His lips grew more demanding. She slid her tongue into his mouth, wishing she had the courage to slide it along his fangs and see what the taste of her blood would do to him.

He broke their kiss and nibbled the side of her jaw. Then his tongue caressed the side of her neck. Her heart hammered against her chest. He was going to bite her.

Suddenly, he pushed her away. His eyes were dark, filled with hunger. His breathing ragged. I can't. Not now.

She tried to go to him, but her feet were glued to the floor. No matter how she struggled, she couldn't take a step. Niall's image started to fade.

No! Vivian's eyes flew open. She sat up with a gasp. Damn it!

Why did she always wake up before she and her fantasy lover could consummate their relationship? At least he'd actually kissed her this time instead of just talking. He did enough of that during the day while insisting she write down everything he told her.

She sighed. Speaking of writing, she should probably get up and get to work. But she permitted herself a few more moments to linger in bed reliving their first kiss. Even if it was a dream, it sure had felt real at the time.
