"Thea?"
Xander's voice. She hid the box under her bed and stepped away from it like a naughty child.
"What?" she asked, sounding less than civil.
"I thought we should discuss our plan. May I come in?"
No way in hell was he coming into the room where she'd just been fantasizing about him. "We already 'discussed' it, remember?"
There was a pause. "I realize, perhaps, I wasn't listening very well." What was this? Humility? That could only make him sexier. "So, may I come in?"
"No, I'll meet you outside in a few minutes."
"I'll be waiting."
Hearing those words made her shiver, even though he meant it in an innocent way. It would be pointless to wear the necklace and have a conversation with him. With the kind of lust he inspired, it would be used up before they finished talking. He was maddening, all cold civility one minute and wicked temper the next. She never had been able to control her reaction to him, just cover it with a facade of coolness. But surely since she'd just had an orgasm she would be able to keep from jumping his bones for a few minutes.
Riiiiiiiiight.
He was waiting for her just like he said he'd be. Bits of his hair curled with sweat. Maybe he'd had to work out some of his anger in the gym after their earlier talk. It was satisfying to think she'd aroused strong emotions in him, too.
"You want to have an actual conversation this time?" Her cool exterior was holding up pretty well considering she could smell his natural scent of forest and green things, and it was making her want to lick his skin.
His eyes narrowed a bit. "I think we can both be civil. I still don't like the fact that you would be so outnumbered, but I can see the logic in it."
"You forget you would be just as outnumbered, and it's much more likely they would be coming after you since you'll be drawing their attention. All I have to do is wander around and pay attention while acting harmless. I'm pretty good at that. We're lucky this is a very commercial coven. They won't want any bad press."
"They also won't like the idea of being spied on. My having a communication device will be expected. You should keep yours turned off and hidden. Only use it if you must. Otherwise, let's agree to meet back at Headquarters by six."
"Yes, sir," she said with a mock salute. His brows and the corners of his mouth drew down. "Oh, c'mon. It was just a joke. Don't get your panties in a twist."
After a few seconds, he smiled a little. She almost hated to see the stern look go. It was pretty hot. She could see him wearing just such a look while ordering her to bend over, lifting her skirt... Damn, she needed to get laid, and not just because it was her time of the season.
Truthfully, there'd been a few men she'd considered sleeping with, but when it came down to it she just couldn't see them taking charge the way she sometimes needed. So she simply hadn't bothered. Now her seasonal times were getting progressively worse.
A hand waved in front of her face and she frowned.
"Fantasizing about me?" Xander asked. Her frown deepened. "It was just a joke. Don't get your panties in a twist."
"I don't wear panties." She totally hadn't meant to say that, but it was worth it to see the look on his face. Oh, yeah, making such a cool character uncomfortable was fun. She grinned at him. "You were saying?"
He cleared his throat and shook his head. "You're evil, woman. You know that?"
She shrugged easily. "It's part of my charm."
"Indeed." There was something in his eyes that made her think he actually meant it, too.

Peter is a wealthy, philanthropic mystery man who loves children and just happens to confess, while in a state of drunkenness, that he is, in fact, a demon. A Christmas demon, no less. Of course, he also happens to confess his burning desire for Lacey and challenges her to return to him if she thinks she can handle it. Who could say no to that? Especially when the man issuing the challenge has chocolate brown eyes, broad shoulders, and a huge heart.

She studied his home while she sat wrapped in her coat, waiting in the car for him. His house was big and old. She liked that -- it gave it a certain warmth. Of course, she liked pretty much anything old or antique, but the place really seemed to fit him. It seemed strong and warm, like him.
When he emerged from the house he was wearing a burgundy, button-up shirt and carrying a small rectangular box. He handed it to her and waited expectantly. She almost hated to unwrap it, it was so pretty. The copper and silver paper shone under the streetlight.
"The best part is inside," he prompted with a small smile. She stuck her tongue out at him and opened it. In the box was a carnelian cameo pendant on a strand of pearls. It looked to be antique. Lacey stared at it.
"Tell me this isn't real. I can't accept it if it's real."
"It's not real."
"You're lying. Look at it. It is so real."
He shrugged. "Put it on. It would make me happy for you to have it." Well, if it would make him happy... She put it on, feeling completely undeserving but at the same time not caring.
"Why are you so generous?" Such a beautiful antique couldn't have been cheap. It was not the kind of thing one generally bought on a whim. It was a gift meant for someone special. What could it mean?
His smile was a little bitter. "If I get drunk enough, I might just tell you." It took her a moment to realize he wasn't answering her mental question. Once it came to her she sat quietly while he slid behind the wheel and wondered what he meant by it. It sounded like he wanted to make up for something. Though, she supposed, it didn't matter. He was a good man, and he was sad. Her goal for this evening was to cheer him up.
"So, what kind of music do you like?"
"Anything but Christmas music."
"Yeah, they do tend to play it nonstop after Halloween. Um, what do you do for fun?" She hoped to get him talking on light subjects as they drove -- nothing he could be too serious about.
He thought a moment. "Most of the time, I like camping and hiking. Around this time of year, working with kids and getting drunk, just not at the same time."
"Okay, avoiding the subject of Christmas. Where do you go when you're camping?"
"All over, really. I look for spots that I haven't been before. I prefer the little-known ones, where you can go without seeing other people. Sometimes it takes a lot of research to find those places."
"Not much of a people person, are you?"
"No. I'm sorry. I'm not very good company. Would you like to go home?"
"No. I'd like to cheer you up. I plan to get a real smile out of you sometime tonight."
He snorted. "Good luck."
"Are you doubting me?"
"Oh, no, if anyone could do it, it's probably you."
She blushed a little at that. "That's right and don't forget it."
He did a mock salute. "Yes, ma'am."
Finding him agreeable to being cheered up, she went on making little remarks and silly jokes until they reached the bar. As she expected, it was small and afforded some privacy. What dismayed her was the amount he was drinking. He must do it a lot, because he wasn't acting nearly as drunk as he should have been.
"It takes quite a lot to get me drunk," he explained. He must have noticed the way she was looking at him. "So, tell me about you. Why did you decide on charity work?"
"It's important. I feel like I'm making a difference, and that makes me happy. Why are you involved in it?"
"I like seeing kids happy. I don't see that much with my job, and it bothers me."
"It sounds like you don't enjoy your work." She supposed it was his business, but she would never choose a job that made her unhappy, no matter how good the money was. Of course, it was what enabled him to help others, so who was she to judge?
"I don't, but it's something that needs to be done."
"Like city sanitation."
He laughed quietly. "Close enough." He watched her from the corner of his eye while he took a drink.
She had a suspicion. "Do you want to tell me about it?"
He took another drink. "I think I might. You'll probably just think I'm a rich eccentric, anyway." Another drink. "I'm Black Peter." He watched her expectantly.
"Are you a musician?"
"No, no. Knecht Ruprecht? A cert?" His sigh was exasperated. He leaned closer to her. "I'm a Christmas demon."

Alanna was sitting quietly at her desk filling out paperwork when she felt her husband, Collin's, need for her hit her deep in the chest. She had no idea what caused it but it had to be bad to get such a strong reaction. So it came as no surprise when her phone rang a few seconds later.

She answered after the first ring. "Baby?"

"I'm coming to get you," he said. His voice was tight; this was bad.

"Okay, I'll be ready."

He hung up without saying goodbye, which was not like him at all. Alanna jogged down the hall to her boss' office.

"I need to leave," she announced. Janice's thin eyebrows lifted behind her frameless glasses. "There's a family emergency," Alanna explained. Her boss' lips pursed.

"Will you be back tomorrow?" she asked without a touch of sympathy.

"I don't know yet," Alanna replied levelly. She didn't have the energy to care what Janice thought right now.

"Call me when you do." Janice went back to her paperwork, effectively dismissing her employee of two years.

Alanna paid no attention. She was busy trying not to panic as she gathered her things and went to stand outside the office building. She could feel Collin was close. He must have been driving like a madman.

Only a few minutes later, the SUV pulled to a stop directly in front of her and Collin leaned across the seat to open her door, taking off again as soon as it shut behind her.

After buckling up, she put her hand over his white-knuckled grip on the gearshift. She didn't ask what was wrong because she knew he couldn't speak of it yet. Instead, she sat with him in silence as they sped away. Though she was worried, just sitting beside him and touching him made her feel better.

When the signs of the city began to recede, he seemed to breathe easier. His grip relaxed, and he twined his fingers with hers. She tried to keep up with where they were but was soon lost. She had a general idea of their location but he had driven into the maze of back roads he loved to explore. Then, seemingly for no reason, he pulled onto what was barely a track that led into a field of dry grass. He parked where the trees would shield them from the road. She undid her seatbelt as he got out and came around to open her door.

She still had no idea why he'd felt compelled to drag her from work. It was on the tip of her tongue to ask him that very thing but he pinned her against the car door, took hold of her jaw, and kissed her hard. Alanna melted. She didn't understand what was going on but she wasn't about to complain. She could tell by the way his tongue searched her mouth aggressively that he planned not only to make love to her but to be in complete control while doing so, and she absolutely loved it when he did that.

Unfortunately, it didn't happen very often. Something held him back, and he wouldn't tell her what. He obviously enjoyed it. This very moment, soft but deep moans were coming from him, and they were only kissing. Well, their bodies were rubbing rather nicely, but still. This man who shared everything with her refused to let her in on this particular secret and it made her feel insecure, like he didn't trust her. Though it sometimes took him a while to say the big things, he held nothing back from her. Nothing except this.

Well, he definitely wasn't holding back now. His mouth was so hot as his tongue wrapped around hers. Even through his button-down shirt she could feel his skin warming, becoming almost feverish. She shivered at the realization because she knew what it meant. He was close to losing it and becoming something other than human. Which meant what happened between them now would have nothing to do with romance and sweet words.

He leaned back from her, smiling slightly as she sagged against the vehicle. Her answering smile felt a little unsteady.

Maura has a way of ignoring the open doors in her life, like the door to the spirit world in her guest room and the opportunity to be with Jared. But he plans to change all that. But the person who opened the portal has other plans.

Jared studied the portal in Maura Sanderson's spare room. Most portals to the spirit world were protected so that only good energies, or ones that were invited, could enter. This portal had no such restrictions. So anything could come into Maura's home without her knowledge. If the entity was smart, the changes would be gradual. Maura would slowly slip into depression. Close friends might notice, but she would seem like the millions of other Americans fighting their inner demons. Except Maura's demon would have its own consciousness. If she started antidepressants, they would cloud her mind and give the spirit/entity/demon -- whatever it might be -- more of a hold on her. Maura had no protections. She would be an easy target.
* * *
Maura just wanted to take off her shoes and put on her comfy clothes. Managing one of the nicer restaurants in town was a good job but a lot of work. It made her really appreciate going home, getting comfortable, and not having to deal with anything or anyone. It was impossible to avoid all human contact right now. Her kitchen was being remodeled, but the contractors didn't usually bother her unless they had a question. Which was why she was really surprised to see her handyman, Jared, in the spare bedroom. "What are you doing?" she asked.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Your room just caught my attention."
She looked around the rather generic room with its nearly bare eggshell-colored walls. She'd been meaning to spruce it up for a while, but it kept slipping her mind. "This room caught your attention."
In its current state it was probably the least inviting room in the house. Or maybe it was just her. She had never really liked this room. It made her uneasy. In all honesty, she was a little ashamed of the guest room. She wondered if the fact that she hadn't done anything with it meant she was an unwelcoming person. Especially since she had taken great pains to make sure the rest of her home reflected her personality, elegant with an edge. At least, she liked to think of herself that way.
"Oh, yeah. I have a cabinet that I made that would fit just right in that odd-shaped space over there. If you want, I can bring it by sometime and let you look at it."
"Sure, why not?"
He smiled. "Great. Thanks, Maura. And thanks for letting my cousin work with me on this. He really is a good guy."
"I trust you, Jared. Are you guys almost done?"
"Yes, ma'am. We'll be out in a few minutes."
"Okay, see you Monday." Maura wasn't trying to get rid of him, really. She just had plans with a girlfriend this evening. Netta wanted to have another "let's bash men because my boyfriend's a jerk" night. How could Maura refuse? Though some days she would much rather spend an evening with the handsome and handy Jared.
"'Night, Maura," Jared called. The door shut quietly, as usual. That was something she had always noticed about him. He was a big man, but careful. Of course, it wasn't the first thing she noticed about him. That was his smile. He had a serious face with a closely trimmed beard that gave him an almost stern appearance, but when he smiled it was so… real. It completely changed the look of him. It made her think there was more to him than people knew.
Maybe after the remodels in her kitchen were done, she could find the nerve to ask him out. If she did it before then, whether he said yes or no, she would have to see him every day, and that would be uncomfortable.
She had just gotten into her oldest T-shirt and a pair of ratty cutoffs when there was a knock at the door. "The pasta was great," she called to Netta through the door, but when she pulled it open, Jared was on the other side.
He raised his eyebrows at her state of dress. Or undress -- the cutoffs were pretty short. "Sorry. I don't mean to disturb you but I think I left my work calendar in your spare room. I can't go a day without it, I'm so forgetful. Do you mind?"
"No, go ahead and look for it."
"Thanks, I'll hurry."
He left soon after, waving the calendar at her as he went past. As often happened, she was struck by the urge to figure him out. It might have been genuine curiosity or just plain old attraction but it always tugged at her mind. He was obviously handsome and a good person, but she knew lots of nice handsome men. She didn't feel the need to get into their minds. With a small shake of her head she let it go and played the message on her answering machine. It was from her father.
"Hey, baby girl. Just checking in, wanted to see how work is going and all that. Well, I guess I'll catch you later, then. Bye."
Dad was good about checking in on her. He knew Mom didn't call except to complain about how bad her life was, how lonely she was, how little money she had. That always got on Maura's nerves. Her mother didn't work yet she was living almost as well as Maura, who had a well-paying full-time job. She kept those thoughts to herself, though. Comments like that would just bring on an argument and hurt feelings.
She made a note by the phone to call her father back and proceeded to raid the fridge for snacks her friend would like. Netta, the gourmet cook and food connoisseur, arrived before long with a bottle of wine and a bag of potato chips.
"You have such good taste, my friend," laughed Maura. She was glad to see her friend eating, even if it was potato chips. Netta was a small woman with a tendency to lose weight when she got stressed, which was fairly often. She already had a permanent line between her eyebrows. Her short, straight, light brown hair was usually tucked behind her ears, out of the way. Many people were careful about approaching her because she always seemed angry. In reality, she was a very funny person, just a little too high-strung.
"Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it," Netta said as she filled two glasses.
"Easy, that's enough. Let's not drink so much tonight, okay?"
"Oh, come on. It's one night a week when we get to unwind. Don't make me drink by myself. Please." Netta did the puppy dog face.
"Fine. I'll drink with you, but I don't want to get drunk."
"That's fine. Let's go see if there are any cute guys on TV, preferably not wearing shirts. I think we can manage that, don't you? Oh, hey, those are great." She pointed to the new cabinet doors in Maura's kitchen. "I didn't know you were redoing your kitchen." The plain white doors were being replaced by more ornate ones sporting the wood's natural warm tones. Also, the section of counter right next to the stove was becoming a large cutting board.
"I told you about it last weekend."
Netta waved a dismissive hand. "Oh, you know I don't pay attention to things like that, but these are beautiful."
"Aren't they? Jared does great work."
Netta gave her a wicked look. "Ooh, Mr. Big and Stern Jared with the nice ass? I may need some work done in my kitchen." Netta laughed at herself and took a sip of wine. "I am such a slut sometimes."
Maura just shook her head. "He's going to bring over this cabinet he made that he thinks would look good in the spare room. I'm excited to see it. Remember when we drove by his house and I showed you the chainsaw carvings in his front yard?"
"Oh, yeah. Nice ass and good with his hands. My, my…" Netta smiled and shook her head then grabbed the bag of chips and headed to the living room. "Come on; let's see what's on TV."
Maura was used to her friend's abrupt subject changes. So she just went along with her. As usual, they spent the night drinking and laughing while Netta made snide comments about Sam, her boyfriend. Somehow, Maura managed to pass out, also like usual, even though she didn't remember having that much to drink.

The guests had started arriving about an hour ago, all in their costumes. A pharaoh walked by with Lady Godiva on his arm, and Eve was dancing with a serpent. Julia wore her new clothes, fangs that slipped over her canines, and dark gothic makeup that made her green eyes smolder. She kept her psychic senses open as she scanned the room for David.
In her teen years, she had sometimes gotten impressions from people or objects but other things had been more important to her at the time, like boys and hairspray. A few months ago, it was brought back to her attention. She’d shared a cab with a nervous young man, and when he’d accidentally bumped her with his elbow she knew his nervousness was because he was about to propose to his girlfriend.
That same day, she went out and bought a book on developing her psychic senses. She’d even considered trying to find a teacher or mentor when she saw a wedding announcement for the young man in the paper.
“He’s standing over there, in the sailor suit,” Alanna said irritably, pointing to David using her fairy wand.
“Look, Alanna, I’m not interested in him anymore. I just… I don’t know why, but for some reason I need him to see me like this. Just once, I want him to look at me like a woman and not just another friendly fat girl.” Julia knew that his opinion of her shouldn’t matter. She even felt kind of ashamed for dressing up like this, but an evil little part of her brain wanted David to want her, just so she could turn him down.
“But why? There are other guys here who think you’re sexy.”
“I actually liked him. I even asked him out once. It would be unbelievably satisfying to turn him down, Mr. Blond Hair and Blue Eyes All-American Man. It’s probably petty, but I need this. Okay?”
“And after this, you won’t worry about him anymore?”
“Of course not! I wouldn’t date him now if he asked.”
“Well, come back when you’re done, so I can talk to you.”
“All right, I will. Here goes.” Julia flashed a mischievous grin as she swayed over to the drinks table. She wasn’t too intent on her target to notice that the man talking to Collin was watching her every move, though.
“Excuse me,” she said as she squeezed between David and a medieval knight. “I need some water.” She leaned over the table just a little so the server could hear her. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed that David was looking her over.
“Nice outfit,” he said with a smile in his voice. She smiled around her fangs and looked up at him. “Thanks,” she said as she turned to watch a guy in a caveman outfit walk by.
“Oh, hey, Julia! I didn’t recognize you.”
“Oh, um, Kevin, right?”
“David. I’m Collin’s friend.” Still, she did not look at him, just to let him know how disinterested she was. “Do you want to dance?” he asked.
“No, but thanks anyway.” With that, she grinned and sauntered over to Alanna, proud of herself for ignoring him so well when he was finally showing interest. Alanna grinned back at her.
“See that guy talking to Collin?” Alanna asked. “He’s been asking about you. He’s a contractor Collin works with sometimes.”
Julia peeked over at him, studying him while he was turned away from her. He was dressed as a pirate with one of those puffy white shirts, a sash, and a sword. It looked pretty realistic, especially since his head was shaven and she could see that he had a tattoo on his neck.
“Seriously, when you were with David, Galen -- that’s his name -- didn’t take his eyes off you one time.”
She peeked over at him again, and this time he was looking at her. His shirt was open, showcasing a thick, muscular chest. He had the type of body a man gets from physical labor, not from spending half his life in the gym. She had always found that extremely appealing. He had a dark goatee, and his blue eyes studied her boldly. He moved toward them, holding Julia’s gaze.
“Hi, I’m Galen.” His deep, gravelly voice matched his rugged features and strong jaw. “Would you like to dance?”
“Yes.” She sounded more interested than she meant to when she said that, but he just put his hand on the small of her back and led her to the dance floor. She could tell his hand was large because she could feel the heat of it, even through the thick brocade of her corset. Alanna watched them with amusement as she talked to her husband.
“My name is Julia, by the way.”
“I know. I asked Collin about you.”
“Really? Why?”
He stopped and looked at her. “Because you are the sexiest woman here.”

Who would’ve thought Gnomes could be sexy?

Ember has spent months preparing for the spell that will rescue her father. Now, all she has to do is lure the Gnome, Dowan, into her cave and convince him to help her. She doesn’t know why, but he is the one she needs to raise the energy that will power the spell.

Dowan is intrigued by the sexy witch with the sincere eyes. The woman has guts but will she be a match for Lilia, the Faery that has kidnapped Ember’s father and is the enemy of the Gnomes?
Excerpt #2: Adult

His mixture of anger and desire excited her. There was nothing like a little anger to add spice to bed play. It gave a sharp edge to the passion. He stalked toward her, not speaking. She began backing slowly away. In a moment, he had grabbed her and pinned her to the wall. Those topaz eyes in the dark tan face stared at her with animal intent. She ran her hand through his hair, and the eyes changed to blue again from her sapphire ring. He held the back of her head and kissed her with all his anger and passion and desire. It made her breathless. It made her needy. It made her wet.
He ground against her hips -- no waiting, no coaxing. She wrapped her arms around his back and pulled him closer, so she could feel more of him against her. He gave a laugh of evil delight when she rubbed her breasts against his chest.
“It’s better this way,” he said as he moved her dress to expose her breasts, which were already tingling. His low, slow rumble of a voice had gotten rough, and that just made her nipples peak harder. He pressed their naked flesh together. The short hairs on his muscular chest stimulated her soft skin, and she grabbed his head to bring him in for another deep kiss. One of her legs wrapped around his hips. His low laugh resonated against her. “You’ll need both feet on the ground for this,” he said.
While she was distracted with their kiss, his hands had found her bottom under the dress. The tiny quakes started in his hands again. He grazed his fingertips slowly down the cleft of her ass. She had never realized how sensitive the skin was there.
She tensed at first when his fingers brushed over her back opening. He kept stroking patiently until she was relaxed enough for him to slide his small finger into her. She moaned loudly. Gods, it felt good.. She never would have imagined feeling such pleasure there. He increased the quaking in his fingers and she arched back against the cave wall. When his other hand began sliding through the slick outer lips of her pussy, her stomach muscles clenched. One finger dipped into her opening and stroked slowly down the inside, then two fingers. Then his thumb started circling her clit.
“Oh, gods, Dowan,” she groaned. It was impossible not to move her hips. There was too much happening inside her body. She did not know what he was doing with his little finger, but whatever it was just doubled the pleasure and the pressure inside her pussy. Added to that were the tingling vibrations against her clit and his hot mouth roving her exposed breasts. His teeth scraped her as he sucked hard on her tender skin. She tried to stop digging her fingernails into his back -- she must be hurting him by now -- but she had to do something with her hands. So, she moved them to his scalp, but she just pulled his hair.
He looked up with her nipple in his mouth and said, “Stop worrying about it. I want to know how aroused you are.”
She knew she was about to come, but she did not know if she would survive it. She tried to pull his head up, but he was reluctant to leave her breasts. “I need something to bite,” she grated at him. His erection pulsed at her admission. He began sucking on the skin of her neck without further protest. She bit his shoulder until the very end, when she had to scream.
