Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I'll come to thee by moonlight,
Though hell should bar the way!

Alfred Noyes
"The Highwayman"

"You're quiet tonight, lover."
"Am I?"
"Not a word's passed your lips except 'harder,' 'more,' and 'oh, God...' and those I recall being spoken in the heat of passion. You've not made a peep since. Being the smart type myself, despite all appearances, this tells me you've got something going on in that busy mind of yours. You care to share?"
"I don't know yet."
"Well, that's fair." Cool, strong arms wrapped around Nathaniel's waist, pulling him backwards against his lover's body. "Of course, you know I don't plan to let up until you spill the whole pot of beans."
Nathaniel gave a soft laugh despite himself. "I know you won't."
"So? Save us a little trouble, and tell me what's on your mind right now."
"Not yet." Nathaniel raised his hand and placed it palm-down on the cold window glass, where he stood staring out into the night, down to the abandoned stretch of cracked pavement running past his apartment. "There aren't words, so far."
"Hmm. Never known you to be at a loss before." Nathaniel's lover jostled him gently, playfully. "Never did meet a man who liked so much to talk about anything and everything. Apples to anthills. That's why I took a shine to you in the first place -- well, aside from an ass you could bounce quarters off and your pretty face. Sing for me."
"O figlio perdito --"
Nathaniel's lover jostled him. "Smarty-pants."
"Yeah." Nathaniel leaned into his lover's firm, gentle hold, savoring the feel of being held strong and sure by someone who'd never let him fall. Life taught gay men an early lesson: don't trust anyone unless you know for a fact they won't turn on you, and that they mean it when they say they love you. His partner had it all, did it all, said it all, and meant it all.
Nathaniel should have been able to be open about what was worrying him. Yet somehow, he found that he couldn't put his thoughts into words. Not yet.
His lover seemed to accept that. One thing about him, he did know when not to push. He simply held Nathaniel and rocked them soft and easy against one another, sexy yet comforting. "It'll be all right," he murmured after a moment. "Whatever's got you fretting, it'll be just fine."
Nathaniel's lips curved in a smile. "I know."
He reached down to lay his hands over his lover's, feeling the same mild shock as he had the first time they touched, finding them to be cool and satin-slick despite a few calluses. They held still as if carved from marble. No human could ever hold such a pose without so much as twitching.
Nathaniel had learned that there were more things on heaven and earth, Horatio, and so forth, but even he'd had a hard time accepting that the gorgeous man, all tousled hazelnut hair, twinkling blue eyes, and ready wit, was, of all things, a vampire.
Honestly, weren't vampires supposed to at least give a nod to tradition? He'd seen enough wannabes in his time to know the accepted look was unrelieved black from hair to clothes to boots. This man -- vampire -- on the other hand, gloried in wearing a soft flannel shirt, molded-on and faded blue jeans, and clean but battered sneakers. No thick, chunky jewelry, save for a cross necklace.
Yeah, a cross.
When he'd leaned back against the bar counter in the sports watering hole where they'd met, arms crossed, grinning broadly, Nathaniel had cracked up and told the man he had a hell of an imagination.
The vampire had shrugged, and asked for one night to prove himself.
Nathaniel didn't usually go for one-night stands, but this man had the look, he had the wit, and you had to admire someone with balls big enough to tell such outrageous stories.
He'd taken the vampire up on his offer.
And back in his apartment, when sharp fangs that were in no way fake pierced the soft skin of his neck, where throat met shoulder, and the vampire drank deep of his blood, Nathaniel had realized this was no lie. He'd found an honest-to-Satan vampire, and brought him home to bed.
What a bedding it had been, too! Tangled, sweaty limbs, lips and tongues fighting for dominance in wet, devouring kisses, and hands everywhere, from pinching nipples to gently rolling balls to stripping heavy, swollen cocks. Cool fingers, slick with oil, slipping inside Nathaniel, stretching him open with more patience and tenderness than any mortal had ever shown. The feel of the vampire's cock splitting him open, making him ache for more even as it was given to him, and then the blissful burn of being totally filled... well, Nathaniel hadn't minded the blood loss by then.
To his surprise, it still hadn't bothered him when he came down from his orgasm, when he and the vampire lay tangled together in a mass of sweaty sheets, stained with one another's come, marked by new-forming bruises and love bites. He'd let the vampire rest atop him, not breathing but still quaking in every muscle from the force of his climax, and thought, So, this is a vampire. If this is a creature of the night, I'll take him over a human any day.
The vampire had chuckled, as if reading Nathaniel's thoughts. He'd raised his head and grinned. "Barrett," he'd said, stroking Nathaniel's cheek. "My name's Barrett. D'you believe me now?"
Barrett. Nathaniel let himself fall into the soothing, rocking rhythm. When Barrett began to hum, some old tune by Johnny Cash that just fit his raspy voice, Nathaniel almost closed his eyes and purred with the pleasure of it.
Yes, his lover was a killer. More, he was a thief, a gambler, and an all-around bad guy. But Barrett loved Nathaniel with all his un-beating heart, would do anything for him, and that was what mattered in the end.
Soft lips brushed Nathaniel's ear. "So," Barrett murmured, "you feel ready to talk yet?"
Nathaniel stared out the window, at the lonely stretch of highway beneath them. He took in a deep breath, and nodded. "Yes," he said. "Don't leave me tonight. Promise you won't leave me."

The pink haze faded and Zandra glanced around, apprehensive yet curious. She and her companions had some difficulties at their last destination -- a town in the old west. She wondered what place -- or time -- Dr. Apriyn had sent them to now.

Then she remembered the pendants Dr. Apriyn had given her, Sefu and Tiago before they'd stepped into the time machine. The pendants vibrated before the machine took off and also told them the year they'd traveled to.

Taking the round red pendant between her fingertips, she glanced down at it and read aloud, "The year is sixteen eighty-six." She looked toward the nearby village of stone and wood huts. Smoke drifted from the rooftops and as she shivered in the chilly dusk, Zandra wished she were inside one of the cozy homes.

Wrapping her arms around herself, she glanced at her companions. Tiago, slender and lean with elbow-length sable hair and hawkish features, took in his surrounding through piercing brown eyes. He folded his arms across his chest and shivered as well.

Sefu -- tall with cropped blond hair and the powerful, athletic body of a gladiator -- turned to Zandra and slid an arm around her.

Sighing, she pressed closer to his rock-hard body, trying to absorb his warmth, though he trembled almost as much as she did.

"We better find shelter before we freeze to death," Zandra said.

"No way," Tiago said, his voice soft but raspy. "After the shit we went through during the last trip, I'm not getting involved with anyone else. We'll find a secluded place to wait until the time machine takes off again."

"But I'm cold!" Zandra said through clenched teeth.

The muscles of Sefu's big body rippled as he called upon his shapeshifting skills and changed into a shaggy ape-like creature. He didn't look handsome, but his fur coat was quite warm. Closing her eyes, Zandra rubbed her cheek against his broad chest and his arms tightened around her.

"That's better," she said. "I'm not good at changing into animals."

"Oh that's real smart," Tiago said, curling his lip at Sefu. "What if these primitive humans see you looking like that? Talk about calling attention to yourself. If we contact them, we're supposed to blend in, remember?"

"I thought you wanted to avoid them?" Zandra said, then shook her head. "I guess you're right."

"Not that changing into animals is a bad idea," Tiago said. "It might be the cover we need."

"I told you I'm not good at animals."

His piercing brown gaze darted up to the branches of a nearby tree. "How are you at birds?"

Zandra and Sefu followed Tiago's line of vision to the owl perched on a branch.

"Bird. Beast. They're all hard for me," she said. "But I'll give it a shot."

Sometimes Dr. Apriyn focused so intently on his work that he neglected his baser needs. Just because he obsessed about his projects didn't mean he lacked the same sexual desires as other men. Today's passionate interlude was a necessary part of his plan, but he still enjoyed himself tremendously.

His post as a general medical examiner in the Aspectian capital city meant he had many opportunities to find the people needed for his experiment. He required three highly skilled Aspectians who were familiar with Earth languages and had strong survival instincts but lacked family connections or prominent positions in society. In short, he needed competent people who could easily disappear. That seemed impossible, but not if one knew where to look.

Dr. Apriyn didn't need pillars of society. In fact for the dark, perilous science he dabbled in, he required people equally dangerous, seductive and powerful.

Most people wouldn't consider a pleasure shifter for such work, but when he met Zandra last month, he knew she was perfect for the task. Further study of the young woman proved him right.

Now he stretched out on the satin covered bed in the pleasure house where she worked. He watched her comb her long, chestnut hair. He'd requested she keep her true form during their appointment, and she willingly obliged.

Here on the planet Aspectia, some inhabitants possessed the gift of shapeshifting. The planet was named for these magnificent beings called Aspectians. Dr. Apriyn, though born here, was a non-shifter, identical to an Earth human. Still his shifter cousins fascinated him.

"You told me what form you want me in," Zandra said, gazing at him through brown eyes trimmed with thick, dark lashes. Though she'd grown up on the streets, her eyes weren't hard like so many others Apriyn had seen. "And you asked me to brush my hair."

"You look beautiful when you brush your hair," he said. Nothing turned him on more than the sight of a naked woman brushing her long hair. He loved the silkiness of her tresses and the gentle bounce of her full breasts.

"What else do you want?" she asked.

"I want to touch you," he said in a husky voice. His heartbeat quickened and his cock swelled, poking against the red sheet that covered him from the waist down. He reached beneath and stroked himself, his gaze still fixed on Zandra.

"Here, let me help." She placed her brush on the night table and climbed beneath the sheets. Her lush body half draped over his, she used the sole of her foot to rub his calves while her hand curled around his cock. His eyes narrowed and his pulse quickened.

Zandra's thumb swept over his cock head and teased the ultra sensitive underside. As good as this felt, he wanted to touch her back. He hungered for sex, though as a non-shifting male he rarely nabbed the attention of other Aspectians. They generally preferred their own kind, yet here in the underground, pleasure shifters fucked anyone for the right price.

Dr. Apriyn had paid to use Zandra tonight, but she had no idea the bonus he would soon offer.

"Reeeuunited and it feels sooo goooood... Reeeuunited cuz it's under... good." No, not good, it was something else, but she couldn't remember. Undergood wasn't a word, was it? No, that wasn't right. Ah, well, it didn't matter. She was a SUPERSTAR.

Maddie was officially six sheets to the wind and loving every minute. Opting to karaoke via her chair, head thrown back, loud and frighteningly off key, she sang her heart out.

"Bartender..." Maddie slapped the table with the palm of her hand, "I need another drink. A big, big, big one." Maddie's head fell forward on her arms. She laid her cheek against her wrist and closed her eyes.

Maxine leaned over toward Maddie and brushed the hair from her eyes. "No, mi amiga, you don't need another drink. You need to go home and get some sleep."

Maddie lifted her head from the table and tried to focus on Maxine. "No, I want another drink. I want one with the pretty pink umbrella like Victoria has." Was that her with the slurred speech?

"Darling, you're smashed," Victoria informed her, "and I think they only give you a pink umbrella if you have what I'm drinking and you can't do that, Maddie, because then you're mixing your alcohol, which leads to puking and puffy eyes and all sorts of things that are ugly for your skin."

Maddie pounded her hand on the table again. "I want another drink." Pushing the hair out of her eyes, she waved her arm in the air, pointing her finger at the poor bartender. "You, bring me another drink and put an umbrella in it. Humor me."

"Hookay, Maddie, it's time to go home. I'm calling Corrine so we can get your address." Katy rubbed her back in soothing circles while she called Corrine on her cell phone.

"Okay, Corrine," she heard Katy say somewhere far off in the distance, "I will, I promise. Bye."

Maddie felt her head bobbing, but she couldn't seem to get control of the up and down motion. "Is Corrine going to get me another drink?"

Katy chuckled. "No, but she said you're missing the Home and Garden channel's spring extravaganza..."

Maddie sat upright. Ooh, a spring extrava... ex... extra... Oh, whatever. She loved their fall bonanza. Was it fall? Yes, it would have had to be, because there were no winter flowers and that was the last one she could recall watching. Were there flowers in the winter? No, certainly not. It was too cold. Brrr, cold.

"Okay, Kaky," Maddie said, popping up, "I have to go. The Home and Garden channel has a special tonight."

"I've called you a cab. C'mon, we'll wait outside with you. I think a little air would be a good thing."

Maddie let Katy lead her through the bar and out the door. "You are really nice, Kaky. I like you and I think your husband was a stupid head for drifting away... Or whatever he did."

Victoria let her perfect nails rest under her nose to mask the smell of Maddie's breath. "Whew, Maddie, you are snockered."

Maddie threw her arms around Victoria, knocking her slight frame backward. "Oh, Victoriaaa, Vic... turia... Vick-EEE, maybe you should get snockered too, an' then you won't be a CON-TROL freak."

Victoria patted her back and stepped away from Maddie. "Right, darling, and you're the perfect example of what I want to be when I finally run amok. Thanks for showing me the way."

"Uurre welcome." Maddie smiled, her lips curling awkwardly.

Maxine giggled when Maddie wrapped her arm around her shoulders and gazed deeply into her eyes. "Maxie, did Mr. Puerto Rico do that to you?" She referred to the small, white scar by Maxine's lip. Maxine's hand flew to her mouth, but Maddie pushed it away. "He's a mean jerk and if he ever touches you again, I'll... I'll... well, I dunno what I'll do. But it'll be really bad. So there." Maxine hugged her hard and Maddie sniffed the warm cinnamon and vanilla flavor of her coat.

"Okay, Maddie. We'll see you next week, I guess, right?" Maxine asked.

"Are we gonna get snockered and sing karaoke again?"

Katy took Maddie by the hand and opened the cab door for her. "We'll see what happens then, okay? For now you go home and get a good night's rest."

"K... Kaky, bye."

Maddie watched as the three women turned into a blur of color that made holding her head upright difficult. She liked them and she wanted to go back to see them again, but not before she had more sex.

Cole would want to have sex. She'd call Cole.
