Tagline Tuesday is a new feature of the Changeling Press Blog. So, what is a tagline?
In addition to a book
blurb, a short description of the work, publishers often ask authors to submit taglines.
But what is a tagline? According to Wikipedia the idea is to create a memorable
dramatic phrase that will sum up the tone and premise of a visual product or to
reinforce and strengthen the audience’s memory of a literary product.
The tagline is a
sales tool, a catchphrase. Over the years, Hollywood has used one-liners to
sell movies to the public. Movie taglines are hooks to grab your attention and
intrigue you. For example:
“Don’t Let Go” (Gravity)
“Out here survival
is everything.” (Captain Phillips)
“In space no one
can hear you scream.” (Alien)
To create a tagline
for a book, the author must condense the thousands of words they’ve written into
a catchphrase that sums up the story and intrigues a potential reader with just
a short sentence or two.
Tagline Tuesday
will highlight the book taglines of the amazing Changeling Press authors. This
Tuesday’s taglines are from the fabulous Shelby Morgan.
