"This is a big day for you, Pearlann," Princess Voluptia said with her usual condescending smile. The woman's slanted blue eyes narrowed in her plump face and she swept a tendril of curly gold hair from her brow. "You've proven yourself a woman of similar tastes to my own. Over the past months I've enjoyed your company immensely."
"I'm glad," Silky replied. She had grown so accustomed to her alias that responding to it felt natural. Like the princess, she wore a satin robe, belted loosely at her waist, and high-heeled sandals. Dressed for leisure, they made their way down a hidden corridor beneath the princess' chamber in the palace located at the Amazurnian capital. "When we met at the auction, I knew we'd be friends."
The secret and illegal slave auction had disgusted Silky, as did her "friendship" to the princess, but it had gotten her entrance to the royal harem. Though men had far fewer rights than women on Amazurn, actual slavery had been outlawed. Other than the underground auctions, men could no longer be bought and sold. Some argued that those who worked in the legal pleasure houses or signed into the harems of wealthy women were no better than slaves. Others argued that since they kept the profits, their prostitution was not slavery, but a career.
For many men, working in a pleasure house or joining a harem offered more benefits than other careers. A successful prostitute or harem boy had wealth and security. Many handsome young men aspired to be selected for one of the royal harems. Queen Pussyanna had a vast harem and was known for her kindness. Her daughters, Voluptia, Marka and Rosetip, also had harems, though Voluptia hadn't inherited her mother's generous nature. Still her harem boys appeared to live in the lap of luxury, well-treated and protected.
However Silky had reason to believe life in Voluptia's harem was not as pleasant as everyone thought. Since arriving months ago, she had not seen any serious abuse -- some verbal scolding every now and then, but nothing alarming. Yet she knew in her heart something was wrong in the palace.
Surely if Voluptia harmed her men, she wouldn't do so publicly. Queen Pussyanna, with her stance on abuse of servants, wouldn't allow it. No, if the princess mistreated her men, or worse, she did so in private. Silky intended to uncover that dark, dirty secret, which explained why she had pursued a friendship with the princess under an assumed name.
"This is strange," Silky remarked as they made their way down a long, twisting staircase. Light from the princess' lantern danced on the brick walls and other than the click of their sandals on the stone floor, not a sound could be heard. "Why isn't there an elevator?"
"Ages ago, when the palace was built, this was the old security section. Later it was moved and this staircase sealed off. The dungeon beneath is no longer used, thanks to modern prisons. I discovered it about ten years ago and paid very well for workers to come here in secret and turn the old dungeon into my private sanctuary. No one, not even my mother, knows about it."
"Surely the workers and palace security --"
"Were paid well for their silence." Voluptia smiled wickedly. "Besides, not everyone agrees with my mother's indulgence toward male servants. Some members of security are my closest friends and enjoy this sanctuary as much as I do. At least here the ways of old Amazurn are preserved."
When they reached the bottom of the stairs, they turned down a corridor illuminated by wall lights. Voluptia turned off her lantern and hung it on a hook. At that moment, a tall, redheaded woman with powerfully muscled arms exposed in a purple uniform vest stepped into the corridor and approached. She wore black trousers and boots and carried a stun pistol.
"Captain Ironess, this is my friend, Pearlann. She's been living off world for the past twenty years but has returned with a longing for old Amazurn, if you understand."
"Oh yes, Your Highness, I understand. She won't be disappointed here."
"Lead on," the princess ordered and the captain bowed her head and guided them down another corridor.
They paused near a heavy wooden door reinforced by steel. Using an old-fashioned iron key, she unlocked the door and pushed it open. Two guards, dressed in black vests and trousers and also carrying stun pistols, blocked their entrance. At a motion from their captain, the women stepped aside and bowed deeply as the princess and Silky entered.
At first glance, this harem appeared no different than the ones upstairs. Several small rooms, once prison cells, some still retaining their iron bars, surrounded a large central room. Rugs and enormous pillows covered the floors. Lush couches and chairs were scattered randomly and each of the small cells contained a bed covered in silk or satin sheets. The scent of cologne filled the room.
If the harem boys upstairs had been beautiful, the men who lounged and mingled in this harem were exquisite. From the slenderest, sweetest-faced youth to the most strapping, ruggedly handsome hunk, they were pure male perfection.
A hulking blond wearing nothing but snug blue trousers clapped his hands and all the men rushed to the center of the room and dropped to their knees, their heads bowed before the princess.
All the men but one.
A tall, lean-muscled man with piercing gray eyes, a hawkish face and thick black hair tied in a tail down his back stood behind the bars of a cell. He looked defiantly at the princess. She curled her lip, waved her hand to the others who dispersed and approached the cell.
"Pearlann, come with me."
Silky followed, though her full attention fixed on the man. She could scarcely believe her eyes. Could it possibly be?
"Like a breeder who keeps an unruly but supremely beautiful horse solely for her own perverse pleasure, I keep Shawn-Dan Dawn."
A jolt of shock shot through Silky. This was Shawn-Dan Dawn, the man who, two years ago, had won the queen's gladiatorial challenge in the single fighters division. He had accepted her personal invitation to fight against some of the greatest male warriors on Amazurn. Such warriors lived on the Alpha Islands, where dominant males were banished to prevent them from wreaking havoc on society. Though the men on the islands basically ruled themselves, they were prisoners there, not allowed to leave the islands or travel off planet. The winners of the queen's gladiatorial challenge were given a large sum of money as well as the freedom to leave Amazurn.
Since Shawn-Dan Dawn's win, Silky, like the rest of the world, believed he had left the island, never to be heard from again. Rumor had it he had fled the galaxy, having despised his exile on Alpha Island East and wishing to be as far from Amazurn as possible.
While some men enjoyed their lives on the Alpha Islands, others considered themselves little more than slaves and wished to leave. Shawn-Dan "The Master" Dawn, as he had been called in the arena, often made public his loathing for Amazurn tradition regarding men.
How then had he landed here, a slave in every sense of the word? Men who entered harems did so of their own free will. They signed legal documents stating that they wished to serve their mistresses. Perhaps the men in this dungeon hadn't agreed to anything. What if they had been taken against their will?
Silky's gaze met Shawn's. In her business she'd seen many horrors. She'd met saints and sinners, missionaries and cold-blooded killers, but never had she seen such an expression of hatred and revulsion as in this man's eyes.
"Magnificent, isn't he?" Voluptia continued. She reached out a fingertip to touch Shawn's chiseled lips and he stepped back in disgust. The princess sighed. "Not trainable, however. One would think a former gladiator of his quality would be quite trainable."
"If I remember him from news interviews, he doesn't like taking orders," Silky replied softly. Seeing this once proud athlete behind bars disturbed her. Though she didn't agree with some of the rules of male gladiatorial sports, part of her had been compelled to watch the magnificent fighters. Shawn had been among her favorites. He had been like a tornado in the ring -- powerful, skilled and darkly beautiful. Proud with a fiery personality, he had been the ultimate gladiator. She'd been in the audience the day he had won the queen's challenge and supposedly secured his freedom. When he'd stood in the arena, his fist raised in victory, his powerful chest heaving and his magnificent body gleaming with sweat and blood, she'd experienced a rush of overwhelming joy for him. Though she had never met the man in person, she had followed his career and knew how much freedom meant to him.
Now to learn it had all been taken away --
"Is something wrong?" the princess asked. "Pearlann?"

Above him, their bedroom door slammed. Thumps headed downstairs. Calla stopped in the arched doorway of the living room, shooting him a glare that might just wither the half-decorated Christmas tree behind him.

Damn. Still pissed.

Calla clasped her hands behind her back. Her large, lovely breasts jutted forward, straining against the thin T-shirt. Hell. That was another thing lately. He took in the jeans emphasizing her curvy body, trying to tone down his rampaging lust. They used to have sex multiple times a day, but it had been almost a week since she let him touch her.

Silent, Calla stomped to the Christmas tree and pulled an ornament from the box. She turned to face him, a glassy blue ball dangling from her finger, hints of red sparks shooting his way.

Grinning, Scott teased the air around her. His vision changed, the air becoming strands of colors, stirring and swirling from her movements. He blew her a kiss, pushing it along an orangish-colored line of air. It caressed her cheek, her lips, brushing some crimson strands of hair from her face.

She snorted, her eyes darkening with a ring of red as her dragon showed it was still close to the surface. "Let's get this done," she stated matter-of-factly.

Scott blinked at her bland tone. "Of course, darling."

"Hmph." She turned to the tree and hooked the small glass ball on the tip of a branch, then bent over, rummaging in the box, treating him to a delicious view of her heart-shaped ass.

His cock sprang to life, pulsing in hot agony.

Grabbing the mistletoe, Scott took a step toward his wife. When she didn't blast him with fire, he edged closer. Her ass beckoned, but he resisted pulling her against his aching groin. Instead, he trailed his hand up her spine.

Calla jerked, spinning to face him, her mouth thin, face white.

Scott grinned, and held out the berried greenery. "Merry Christmas."

Her eyes softened. "Mistletoe. You found some."

Holding it above their heads, he wiggled his eyebrows. Calla laughed, the anger fading from her eyes, replaced by the flush of desire.

Pulling her close, he gently touched his lips to hers.

Calla grabbed his hips and pressed against him, sliding her tongue into his mouth.

The mistletoe -- had to be magic -- dropped to the floor. He ran his hands down her arms. She grabbed his erection through his jeans and he drew back. "Are you sure?"

Her voice came thick and husky. "Here. Now."

A roller coaster. But this was one mood shift he would enjoy.

Dr. Gary Lord was comfortable and out in his homosexuality anywhere but his southern hometown and certainly not at his parents' house. But, in Yulee, Florida, secrets are very hard to keep when the folks across town know how you season your greens the minute you say, "Pass the salt."

And there's an old high school classmate who's been waiting patiently for Gary to come home... and he plans to crash Gary's Yuletide celebration in a big way.

Excerpt:

A battered and rusty Silverado pulled up to the diner, and the headlights glared directly into Gary’s eyes. Whoever got out was bundled up against the chill evening in a denim jacket and a black cowboy hat. He kept his head down and sprinted inside.

Hari chuckled under her breath, and sipped her coffee until the newcomer had sauntered over to have a few words with Georgia. “Well, now. That’s a mighty fine ass.”

Gary turned to look before he realized what that revealed. Quickly, he turned around and ate his pie.

Hari mimed shooting at Gary with her fingers. “Gotcha. Thought so.” She winked again to let him know she wasn’t offended or likely to blow the whistle on his closet door. Her aqua gaze slid back to the newcomer, and then she grinned up at the approaching man. “Well, hellooo stranger.”

“Yeah, and they don’t get any stranger than me.” The deep, graveled voice was familiar. “Hiya, Harriet. Gary. Mind if I join you? Georgia says y’all have all the cream.”

Hari shook her head. “I’m leaving. You can keep Gary company.” She tottered upright, gained her balance, and clapped a hand on Gary’s shoulder. “Nice seeing you, Gary. Stop by Springfield if you ever get a chance.” She slung her purse onto her shoulder and left.

The new guy slid into her place and picked up her coffee cup. He used the napkin to wipe away her lipstick, and then sipped without raising his head so Gary could see who his new guest was. “Blech. She always did use too much sweetener.” He raised his head until his brown eyes laughed at Gary’s surprised expression. “Long time no see.”

Gary’s heart skipped a few beats. Adam Crider had been the focus of more than a few of Gary’s adolescent fantasies when Adam had been captain of the football team, Homecoming King, and all around guy most likely to succeed at anything he wanted. Even now, the weathered tan was a few shades darker than it had been in school, but the face was still just as handsome. “Hi, Adam. How have you been?”

“’Bout the same. Nothing much changes around here, if you haven’t noticed.” For some reason, Adam’s lips twisted into a half smile. “Gets damn boring, to be honest.”

Gary couldn’t help but agree, so he took his last bite of pie and nodded.

“You’ve changed.” Adam took another sip, but didn’t lose the ironic smile on his face. “You always were skinny as hell, but you’ve filled out. Guess all that diving does that.”

One of Gary’s eyebrows shot up. Someone besides his immediate family knew what he did? Okay, that was possible, but 90% of Americans couldn’t give a damn about what he found in Alexandria’s harbor unless it had to do with Cleopatra herself. Even then, they wouldn’t understand half of what he said concerning what he’d found. “Yeah. That and I did a little experimental archaeology.”

“Yeah, I know. Saw the pictures of you helping engineers figure out how the pyramid blocks might have been made with dolomite.” Adam’s answer was bland. “Bet it was hot as hell. You looked funny stripped down to that itty bitty loincloth thing they made the workers wear, but you got one helluva tan.” Adam studied Gary’s surprised face. “Sun bleached your hair, too.”

“How did you know all that?” Gary knew he’d never sent the pictures of himself wearing the linen costume of an Egyptian stone worker because his mother would have had a litter of kittens at his being half-naked and crouched in the hot sun, beating on one big rock with a smaller round one.

Adam tipped his hat further back and lounged all over the red Naugahyde bench. “Just ’cause I’m a worthless ol’ cowboy, doesn’t mean I don’t read. Happens I got a degree in structural engineering and I still get the trade magazines. You made the back pages of Cadalyst, because Doc Aimsley used a CAD program to map out the project on my computer.”

Gary snorted. Aimsley was a publication whore who’d put his byline on any article, no matter how obscure. In the cutthroat world of who published first, Aimsley was a real pirate. No one liked him, but he got the money to get projects done in the first place. “Structural engineering jobs would be hard to come by around here.”

“I know. My dad got sick. Cancer. I came home to take care of him. He died just after Thanksgiving.” Adam swallowed, the pain still fresh in his eyes. “Least he’s with Mom now.” He slugged back a large gulp of coffee. “Blech. I wish she’d make it taste less like a chemical factory. Anyways, you ever ride a camel?”

He took the hint. Gary recognized Adam’s need to change the subject to something less painful. He snorted and shoved his pie plate to the side. “They stink to high heaven, but you get where you’re going. So, yeah, I’ve ridden a camel.”

Adam’s hat tipped lower, and he leaned in. His voice was softer than an angel’s kiss, and so low Gary leaned in to hear him. “How about a cowboy?”

I'd like to lick the cream off his fingers. Sebastian, king of cats, was sunbathing in a rafter above the cooking exhibition. Her familiar was always interested in food. That's what made them such a good pair.

Krista eyed the broad expanse of Chase Hamilton's chest and licked her lips. The polo stretched enticingly across muscles that bulged nicely with his efficient movements in the studio kitchen. There were other places she wanted to lick. And cream wasn't the only thing on the menu. Her gaze slid down his strong legs and back up to the devilishly charming smile on his face.

Do you think he's what we're looking for? Bastian's amusement slid through the thought-speak.

Krista brushed a stray lock of her bright copper tresses behind her ear. He was definitely what she was looking for. Her magic needed a little sexual tune-up. No doubt tall, dark, and kickass in the kitchen would do nicely for a little holiday treat.

Bastian's chuckle echoed in her thoughts, and she shot a glare up to the rafters. With a gleam of his eyes he disappeared into the shadows. Coward.

It is always better to retreat and fight another day than to suffer a redhead's wrath. My mother was a calico. I know these things.

Chase put the finishing flourishes on his festive dish, and the crowd cheered. She had to admit, the sinful creation was definitely mouthwatering. Krista clapped along with the others and then smoothed a hand over her fitted jacket. It wouldn't do for her to look shabby. She was recruiting, after all.

It was time for a taste test. Time to find out if Chase Hamilton was a good candidate for the Kitchen Witch Society. She reached down into the well of her magic where it settled in her core. A light tap, an invitation, was all she needed. Feral heat uncoiled from deep within. It would turn into a raging inferno before the night was out, no doubt about it. Krista let a sigh slip from her lips at the familiar lustful ache. Christmas time was her biggest recruiting season, and she'd been tapping into her resources way too often. It would be date night with her toys again if Chase wasn't interested. Hell, for all she knew, he was taken.

Magic slipped from her in a soft caress through her skin, lingering, searching. She was a talent scout with passive magic. One touch and she'd know.

Krista made her way to the set. Her radar slid from her, questing for the taste of magic she needed. Her focus was so intent that she didn't notice the drop-dead-gorgeous brunette tilting her head flirtatiously toward Chase until the woman cut her eyes at Krista.

Chase, huh? Already on a first-name basis? This is going to be very fun.

Krista shot venomous thoughts to Sebastian but got only light humor in response.

"I would really like to discuss this. Over dinner perhaps?" Now the woman was touching his bare arm.

Krista clenched her jaw. Chase looked down at her hand on his arm and looked up. "I'm already booked for the rest of the time I'm in town." He pulled away, and Krista's eyebrows rose.

"You do know who I work for, right?" Undeterred, she slid her fingers across his shoulders to tuck under his collar. He gently extracted her fingers from his shirt. Krista couldn't help the smile that touched her lips. This woman wasn't used to being told no. "I know who you work for. I've told your representatives on several occasions that I'm not interested. My date for the evening should be here any moment."

He removed his apron, and Krista's radar went off. Well that was new. She almost always had to touch the person for her magic to react. His head lifted, and Krista was pierced to the soul by the intensity of his expression. Magic was in his soul. He was a candidate, all right. The part of her that did this for a living was smug. The woman part of her was starstruck. Damn it.

The rugged lines of his face entranced her. Perfect for the camera. She dug her fingers into her jacket to keep from reaching out to touch him. Before she knew it, they were close enough to kiss. His lips lifted in a conspiratorial smile. He was obviously looking for a stand-in date. Maybe she could save the day.

I can do this.

She smiled at him. "Sorry I'm late." Her voice was breathless.

Mischief lit his expression, and his charming smile made her knees weak. "You're right on time, as always." He set the apron down and held out his arms. It was the most natural thing to step in and let herself be surrounded by his strength. She breathed deeply, and the scent of spices, warm male, and all the memories of holidays well spent flooded her. Her passive magic was also jumping off the charts.

A soft throb began deep within her. Heat flushed her cheeks, and she was thankful for the coat that covered the peaking of her suddenly hard nipples.

She looked up. And up. He was a lot taller than she'd first thought.

"I've missed you." He gave her the lightest kiss she'd ever felt. Like the brush of wings on her lips. Her mouth opened on a sigh, and he pressed just enough to give her a taste of him. She tasted Chase... and sugar cookies.

"Ladies, open your eyes," Rick announced when the four of them came to a stop.

Julia already had an idea what the surprise was since she and Madeline had only been hinting about having a Christmas celebration for weeks. Still, she couldn't keep the smile from her face when she saw the magnificent decorations that transformed Rick's normally sedate mansion into an abode the legendary St. Nicholas himself would be proud to call home.

Behind her Madeline squealed. "It's beautiful!"

And it was. From the enormous Christmas tree adorned in shining silver ornaments and pure white ribbon to the fragrant poinsettias and holly that framed the fireplace with its cheery fire, the parlor was better than anything Julia could have dreamed up.

"Do you like it?" Mischief sparkled in Rick's onyx eyes, making her suspect there was more to the surprise than the scenery.

"Like it? I love it."

"If you like this, you're really going to love the rawhide bone I got for you," Maddox taunted her with a teasing smile.

"Maddox, you ass, not even you can spoil this for me," Julia assured him. Since Madeline's arrival into their lives, she took his dog jokes -- he enjoyed taunting her for being werewolf -- in stride. But as much as Julia adored Madeline, and she was begrudgingly starting to like Maddox because of her, she'd never ever let him think he'd bested her. It was a pride thing. A werewolf thing. And in the company of so many vampires, Maddox and her lover Rick included, maintaining her identity was important.

Rick shot his friend an admonishing look before turning on that smile that always stopped her cold. Now his dark eyes were smoldering.

"I think for a gift we can do much better than that." Rick's tone held promise.

"Well, it's Christmas Eve so I get to open it now, right?" Julia teased.

Rick cut his eyes to Maddox, which irritated her because she knew then that Rick's friend was in on whatever the secret was. Why was she always the last to know things? Or did it just irk her because her lover was always in the know? Rick could read minds.

"Perhaps a private time later," Rick suggested. "I can give it to you when we're alone."

Julia cocked an eyebrow at him, curious as hell now.

"We're all big people here, dead and alive," she pointed out. "Let's see it."

Rick sighed. He even seemed a little flustered. Okay, now she was sure it had something to do with sex. Julia smiled. Her Rick could be so old-fashioned at times. Her kind, the werewolves, were so open about sex and would often mate in groups. She'd always found watching someone else fuck while she was being fucked only pushed her own desire higher.

That wasn't to say Rick wasn't a fantastic lover because he knew how to keep her very happy. But the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to shake him out of his comfort zone. Julia found herself wanting to challenge him sexually.

"Well?" Julia prompted him.

Maddox's expression was hard to read but Madeline was definitely curious. Her gaze was riveted on Rick as he went to the foot of the enormous Christmas tree and fished out a small box wrapped in golden paper, tied with a blood red bow. Julia thought Madeline might go with her on this experiment she'd come up with on the fly. Madeline had once been a prostitute and it wasn't like she had any illusions about sex.

Rick approached her with the package in hand and she could tell he was trying so hard to keep his expression blank. He was doing a terrible job of it. A myriad of emotions flashed across his handsome face. Embarrassment, curiosity, desire... His black eyes were gleaming. It had heat pooling low in her middle.

Julia snatched the box away from him before he could change his mind and proceeded to rip through the wrappings and flimsy cardboard box in very short order. Inside the box was a beautiful bottle, fashioned in blue glass with a shape very similar to an hourglass. The liquid-filled container was sealed by a simple piece of cork at the top.

"What do we have here?" Julia teased him, letting all the wrapping fall to the floor while she held onto the bottle and worked the cork out of the top. Once she'd freed it, a delicate fragrance filled the air before her. The scent reminded her of flowers at first. But it lingered, somehow becoming a heavier scent. More heat, more wetness gathered between her thighs.

"Your present," Rick answered simply.

Julia cocked a brow at him. It smelled good, but weird. Very weird. "It's not perfume, right?"

Maddox snorted. Madeline shook her head.

Rick's smile widened. "It's an... aphrodisiac," he admitted.

Julia laughed, wondering what shade of red he'd turn right now if he could. Lifting it just under her nose, she took another whiff. The scent was strange but... good. Her nipples tightened into diamond hard points and the walls of her pussy clenched now.

She'd heard of aphrodisiacs. She didn't have a lot of background information but she knew their basic purpose. "So I...?"

"You drink it," Madeline answered, smiling. There was a touch of concern in her expression though. "I wouldn't drink much. Some of those can be quite... potent."

Julia nodded, sure that her friend knew what she was talking about. Still, breathing in the scent again, Julia's mouth began to water and she turned her attention to Rick. She wanted to taste the potion. Then she wanted to taste Rick. Every single inch of him...

How hard could donning a Christmassy green Speedo and pretending for thirty seconds to savor a giant candy cane be, anyway? Granted, Parker abhors candy canes and his co-actor is a lecherous Santa wannabe with grubby paws, but can't the man just call the commercial a wrap, take his money, and go home to his husband for the holidays?

Is that too much to ask?

Is it too much to ask Parker to be home on time when it's his night to cook? Never fear, his husband Jeremy's got the solution. A new bedroom technique designed to encourage creativity may bring about the visualization skills Parker needs to save his acting career and his marriage.

"Slacking off isn't going to pay the fucking bills and you know it."

"Don't take that tone with me," he said, propped against the counter, arms crossed in front of his chest.

He may have moved toward me even, but I ignored everything except the heat surging through my head that screamed, How dare he!

"Whatever." I took a huge bite of my dinner and left the kitchen.

If he thought for one second I was going to sit idly by and listen to his bullshit-disguised-as-encouragement again, he -- I'd plopped into my favorite chair, before I realized -- Jeremy was neither an idiot nor a part of my anatomy I chose rarely to speak of.

Tucked in the far corner of the living room next to the den was a tree no taller than my chest. A scant dusting of lights blinked, reflections sparkling off a handful of keepsake ornaments hanging here and there. I had trouble swallowing my one bite of apple.

Getting up and out of that chair took an exorbitant amount of effort. Energy my body seemed unable to conjure, for from the back of my neck to the tips of my hands and feet, I felt numb. Asleep? Sick? Somewhere in the back of my mind, I think I registered Jeremy's footsteps behind me before I felt his touch on my arm.

"I don't want to fight," was all he said as he pulled me against him. "Tough day? Hmm?"

Strange, how resting his chin atop my shoulder as he smothered me with another body hug didn't feel like any weight at all. I struggled not to let his words egg on the part of me that itched to fight. Take me anywhere but back to today, and I wouldn't have a problem.

"If you don't --"

"I don't." I closed my eyes and let myself relax into his touch, sure I'd have as much trouble talking about today as I had thinking about it. Jeremy smelled good; he felt good pressed against my back. His lips worked magic along one side of my neck. I didn't want to think about jobs or money or -- his stomach rumbled -- or dinner...

"Ignore that." He breathed the words against my skin.

"I brought Chinese..."

His chuckle tickled my neck. "Follow me," he said, removing the half-eaten apple from my hand and setting it on the end table.

She lay on the stone floor, writhing in agony, her entire body burning in flames, the scorching heat centering in her lower belly. Unsure what to do, Kassia rocked back and forth, trying desperately to make the unfamiliar ache go away.

Sadly, her problem did not end there. She now had to deal with the human body that she had long since relinquished all hope of ever regaining. Ironically enough, this had to happen when she had finally begun to feel at ease by the vampire Mikhail's side. Luckily, the first time the transformation had occurred, it had been around midday. She had awoken to an unusually cold feeling even though she had fallen asleep on the thick blanket Mikhail had provided for her in front of the sizzling fireplace.

Intending to check on him, a daily ritual of hers, Kassia proceeded to rise up on her hind legs, but found it was difficult. Something felt different. She'd looked down, expecting to see the ebony fur she'd grown accustomed to, finding nothing but smooth, mahogany skin in its place. Her heart jolted with excitement and joy. And then the fear had settled in.

Maintaining her position on the floor, she'd craned her neck to gaze up at the sleeping male on the imposing fourteenth century four-poster bed. "Mikhail," she'd said, her voice ragged, cracking from years of disuse. Her vocal cords had produced a repertoire of barks, whimpers and yelps.

Naturally, he hadn't heard or answered her call while he slumbered. She'd lain back on the blanket, worrying. What would become of her when he found out? Worse, what if Rowan found out about her, that his suspicions of her being more than a mere wolf had been correct all along? The vampire would more than likely rip her apart at the first chance he got. But what would Mikhail do?

"The Loup Garou have always been a mistake, unfit to live among the creatures of this planet," she'd overheard him saying in deep conversation with a visiting vampire. She was a Loup Garou, and therefore she was included in Mikhail's plan of extinction. It was that memory that had prompted her to find a way to hide her true nature from him.

So far it had been easy. Each day while Mikhail slept and in the afternoons when he was preoccupied, she would sneak away to the hidden part of the castle she'd discovered by trailing after him. Inside this damp neglected room she would practice the seamless transformation from wolf to human until it became second nature to her. Shifting.

And so she had, making sure to return to her wolf form before Mikhail became suspicious of her hours away. Today had been different, however. All day long she had been aware of Mikhail, his scent, his voice, his powerful presence. Walking by his side earlier today, she'd wagged her tail insistently, wanting him to acknowledge her female presence. That had been impossible and confusing.

She'd fallen behind him, unnoticed, seeking refuge in this cold dark room, switching to her human form. Within minutes, she'd known something was wrong. Her skin became warmer than usual; a delicious itch crept between her thighs, the kind that no amount of squeezing her legs together could alleviate. There was no way she could return to Mikhail like this, no way she could shift back into her wolf form with these sensations coursing through her blood.

Curled up and naked on the floor, she gazed in distress at the door being pushed open. Kassia froze, held trapped by the piercing cobalt-blue eyes, her eyes wide with disbelief and shock. It all became too much. Scrambling to her feet, she wobbled over to him, her balance unsteady. "Mikhail." She locked her arms around his muscular frame.

He held her at arm's length, his eyes studying, searching. "Wolf?"

Kassia nodded, her coarse raven curls bouncing. "Kassia. Not Wolf." She had waited years to say those words.

"What is the meaning of this?" He backed away from her, his fangs receding into his gums.

She wrapped her arms around her middle and lifted her chin. "I would have told you. I swear it." She would have... eventually.

His eyelids lowered dangerously, matching his carefully meted out words. "You mean that my brother was correct. That you are one of them."

"I'm going to need you to work late tonight," Damien informed Larissa, his attorney. "I want to go over all the financial reports concerning this buy-out before the deal is finalized. Have my secretary order dinner in."

As soon as he made the statement, Damien turned away, watching in the mirror as she stared at his back and gritted her teeth, but nodded even though she had no idea he could see her.

She was irritated, yes, but she was excited too. The intoxicating scent of stirring arousal hit him hard, right in the groin. Her pink tongue darted out to take a swipe at her full bottom lip. Mmmm, he'd be tasting those lips tonight. Watching her hips sway as she moved from where she'd been sitting toward her office, his hands tingled. Tonight would be the night he'd grasp the full globes of her ass, spank them, slam against them. Oh, yes, tonight would be the first of many, many fun filled nights. And mornings. And afternoons.

With a wicked grin, he decided to follow his sexy little attorney. He wanted to make sure she cancelled her date tonight, rather than just pushing back the time. He entered her office moments after she had, not bothering to knock. She hadn't sat down yet, just leaned over her desk talking on the phone.

"I'm really sorry, but something came up so I don't think I will make it at all tonight."

She was damn right she wouldn't be making it tonight, or any other night. Vampires were supposedly a promiscuous bunch, never possessive. But Damien found the very idea of any other man touching Larissa made his fangs descend, ready to rip out a throat. Even now he hated the man on the other end of the line with a vengeance. He couldn't read the human's thoughts since the other man wasn't physically present, but he could hear the regret in the whiny voice on the other end.

Weak. The human didn't deserve to have his hands on those curves. Damien was tempted to reach out and ease that skirt up her thighs, running his nails lightly up the nylons she wore. Would she shiver from the light, teasing caress? Would goose bumps break out across her lusciously dark skin? Oh, he needed to taste that skin. Her neck was tilted just so, an invitation for his mouth to lightly suck the juncture between her head and shoulders. He would run his hands from the sides of her thighs to the front, then upward, so close to her wanting pussy but not touching it. Not yet.

Instead he would glide his hands upwards while tasting her skin, working beneath her shirt up her belly to cup those magnificent breasts. He would hold them over the lacy material of her bra, pressing his erection against her soft ass. He'd use his nails to tease her nipples, running over and over them until she was panting, whimpering for him.

As if she could read his thoughts, she thrust her hips backward, still talking to the whiny man. Damien was convinced he was going to have to hunt down Larissa's would-be date and have a little vamp-to-human talk. Her legs spread slightly, causing the material of her skirt to stretch enticingly across her ass. All he had to do was release his cock from his pants, yank up her clothes and plunge into her. The aroma of her sweet, wet cunt was driving him crazy. And she wasn't thinking about the man she was currently talking to, either. Damien felt no guilt in delving into her thoughts, gratified they centered on no one but him. And how carnal his normally buttoned-down attorney's thoughts were!

He thought he couldn't get any harder, but imagining the way her pussy would fit around his dick made him light-headed. Vampires had precious little blood as it was -- the last thing he needed was for it all to go south, making him a complete airhead. But damn, what heaven it would be to stroke inside her deep and long. He would pinch and pull on her nipples as he rode her, and force her head back so he could swallow her cries of joy.

Perhaps he would pull out just before allowing her to come. Then he could spin her around, forcing her onto his lap as he sank into a chair. That way he could watch his rigid length disappear inside her cunt. He would grasp her ass with both hands, setting a punishing rhythm. He'd rip her blouse open, suckling her breasts as they rocked hard against one another.

Fuck, he had to stop before he took her right here and now, not caring if the entire office heard them. Well, he really didn't care, but Larissa would. To save himself from having to grovel endlessly, he decided discretion was the better part of valor and simply cleared his throat to announce his presence.

Jenna moaned at the delicious sensation of Xavier's thick cock moving in and out of her pussy. His hands gripped her hips tightly, encouraging her to move faster and faster. But it obviously wasn't quick enough because he lifted her off him and knelt on the bed.

"On your hand and knees," Xavier ordered.

Jenna shuddered at his words; she loved it when he got all dominant. She quickly obeyed him and was rewarded by the swipe of his tongue over her labia lips. Then she felt him pull back and the blunt tip of his cock push at her opening.

The pleasure as his cock sank deep in her pussy was as thrilling as it had been the first time they'd made love six months ago. She had fallen deeply in love with her handsome mate. But this was no time to be thinking about then, not when she was being fucked just how she liked it -- hard and fast.

Xavier's fingers bit deep into her sides as he increased his pace, the length of his cock butting at the entrance to her womb. The pleasure/pain of it was more than Jenna could stand, and she moaned and shuddered in orgasm around his thrusting cock. Xavier slowed down and let her ride out the pleasure, then started his hard thrusting again.

She let herself drop down on the bed and supported herself on crossed arms. Her nipples rubbed against the sheets as Xavier's rapid movements pushed her forward and back. His harsh breathing told her he was nearing his own orgasm, and that was enough to send her tumbling into a second one herself. The warm spurts of her mate's release flooded her pussy, and the groans coming from his throat told her how much he had enjoyed himself.

Xavier collapsed at her side, and pulled her toward him. Jenna reached up and traced one of the deep scars on his cheek. Her action had stopped drawing a reaction from him after he realised they didn't matter to her in the least. They were badges of honour to her.

Recovering her breath, Jenna asked, "Are you positive that Jeri is Theron's mate?"

Xavier kissed her softly on her lips. "Yes, love, I am sure. You saw how he acted with you earlier. That is the second time after you had spent the weekend with Jeri that he sniffed around you. He is picking up her scent from your clothes. Although I have to admit it did look weird," he said, laughing at the memory of his older brother's confused look when he had welcomed Jenna home.

Snuggling closer to Xavier, Jenna smiled. "Okay. This is going to be a fun Christmas watching the two of them together."

"Josh, old man Scrapple's gonna kill you if he finds out you've brought puppies into the house! You left them in the hall!" Matt shoved the milk crate into his arms, noticed for the first time what looked like tear tracks on Josh's face. Josh stared down at the milk crate in shock, and one of the puppies leaped up, managed to lick his chin.

He shoved the milk crate back at Matt. "They aren't mine! What the hell? Where did you find them?"

Matt stared at him, and set the puppies on the floor. "They were in the hall." They looked down into the box, and Josh reached in, picked up a puppy and held it to his chin like he was under the influence of an irresistible impulse. Matt couldn't leave the other puppy alone in the milk crate, that would be too cruel, so he picked up the other one, gave it a snuggle. When he looked up, Josh was crying.

"What's wrong? Are you allergic?"

Josh shook his head, and the puppy licked a tear before it dropped off his chin. "No, it's just Christmas, and I always wanted a puppy for Christmas when I was a kid. And now my mom is off on a cruise to Hawaii! She's gonna be gone until January, can you believe it! My mom said it was time for me to start making my own Christmas traditions. What kind of crap is that?"

"I know! My mom went to Greece! Last year she was like, 'Matt, I'm not putting up the tree again. I've had enough evergreen to last ten lifetimes. I want laurel and olive leaves. Next year you're on your own.' I mean, it's like she doesn't even have a kid anymore!"

Josh wiped the back of his hand across his eyes. "I mean, it's not like all of a sudden you're grown up and you don't need Christmas with your mom!"

They both stared down at the puppies in their hands. They were cute as buttons, some sort of fluffy, floppy-eared mix. As if on cue, Matt's puppy started to bark, little puppy yelps. "Shhh! Quiet!" He shoved the puppy's head under the edge of his sweatshirt. "If Scrapple hears them, he's gonna toss us both out into the street."

Josh sniffed. "Figures. We'll be homeless for Christmas. Perfect. We can stay down at the Mission."

"They don't let puppies into the Mission."

Thump-drag-click. They both heard the ominous step of Mr. Scrapple at the same time. Matt shoved his puppy at Josh, pointed to the alcove that served as a bedroom. He stepped out into the hall as the door at the top of the stairs creaked open.

"What are you boys doing down there? I thought I heard a dog."

Matt made his face as innocent as he could. "We don't have puppies! No pets allowed here, right?"

"Damn right. And don't you forget it." The door slammed and Mr. Scrapple's grumpy face disappeared. Matt stuck his head back in Josh's apartment. He was in bed, with a quilt pulled up to his chin. He scooted over and Matt sat down on the edge of the bed. Matt pulled the quilt down a couple of inches. There were two puppies asleep on Josh's chest. They must have been lulled by the warmth of the bed, by their heads resting over his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Matt thought that he could probably fall asleep that same way.

"What are we going to do?" Josh was whispering. Matt shook his head. "They're your puppies," Josh said. "You brought them in here."

"Yeah? Well, you took them to bed. I think that makes them yours." And they both realized at the same moment how ridiculous this was, and grinned at each other. "We can't leave them alone. They're too small. They'll make noise and bring old man Scrapple down on our heads. I've got some milk at my place. What else do we need?"

"A litter box?" Josh shook his head. "No, that's for cats, right? We need newspaper." Josh looked around. "I've got a couple of old copies of the New York Times Book Review around here."

"Perfect." Matt realized they were still whispering. "Okay, I'll take them back across the hall, and give them some milk. You bring the newspaper. Then we need to figure out..."

Matt grabbed both of the sleeping puppies off Josh's chest. He could fit them in a hand each. At the door he looked carefully both ways, then dashed across the hall. Josh peered around the door at him. "Five minutes," he said, mouthing the words silently, and Matt felt a bubble of laughter in his chest, like they were boys playing at commandos. Maybe they should synchronize their watches.

Back in his kitchen, Matt poured some milk into a saucer and put it down on the floor. The puppies seemed to know what to do, though they were not very neat about it, getting milk all over their faces, nearly up to their floppy ears. They had some organic puppy food at the Co-op. He could run across the street and get some when Josh got back with the newspapers.

Josh was good to his word, and the five minutes had been spent on a shower. His black hair was now slicked back and confined in a rubber band, and he was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans and bare feet. His sweatshirt was a black hoodie with a picture of Billie Holiday on the front. The quote said, Don't threaten me with love, baby. Let's just go walking in the rain. He was carrying a handful of newspapers. He looked around at the little studio. "Man, you and me got gypped on these apartments. I got one room, and you got one kitchen."

Matt nodded. "It would be a decent apartment if we put it back together. But I need the kitchen."

"What have you been cooking? It always smells good over here."

"I've been making fresh ricotta cheese and cooking with it."

"Wow. You make your own cheese?"

Matt felt his face turning red. "Well, just ricotta so far because I can't seem to... finish with it. I keep thinking of more recipes to try."

Josh gestured toward the counter. "What are you making now?"

"It's sort of going to be a country soufflé with plums. Sort of a puff pancake."

"Are you making up the recipe?" Matt nodded. "You got to think up a cool name, then. Is that what you do? Make up recipes?"

"I guess." Matt felt his shoulders droop. "You know I work over at the Co-op, right?"

"Yeah?"

"I've been to cooking school. Cordon Bleu. But my first job in a restaurant kitchen? I quit in two days. It was horrible, so many people rushing around, yelling, the sound of dishes clattering into plastic bins, waitresses bitching -- and at the end of the night, it felt like you'd been beat with sticks, and for what? So the restaurant would make money." He shook his head. "That's when I realized it was all about money, not food, and I just... couldn't do it."

Josh gave him a look, nodded, and started putting paper down on the floor for the puppies. "Yeah. I get that. You know how many books I sell either got Chicken Soup or Naughty Housewives on the cover? Makes me think we've lost our soul."

He sat down on the floor, cross-legged, and Matt pulled up a stool. They watched the puppies in silence for a moment, and when the saucer was empty of milk, the puppies crawled across the paper, fell asleep in mid-stride.

"Are you working today?" Josh nudged a puppy with his finger.

"Yeah. I have to go in at one."

"I'll come back and get them about 12:30, then. I'll keep them overnight if you want. What about tomorrow? I've got to be at work at eight."

"I've got tomorrow off."

"Cool. Matt... If we send them to the shelter..."

They both pictured the cement floor, the metal cages stacked four tall, the smell. "No way. We need to figure something out."

Josh nodded. "I'll go get some food."

He wasn't back in the five minutes it would take to get puppy food from the Co-op, so Matt started on his ricotta. He had a couple of cups of fresh draining in the cheesecloth and was cooking the plums down when Josh got back. He was loaded down, puppy food, the good organic stuff, and a small bed lined in plaid flannel, and a little brush, and puppy pads for the floor. And food bowls and water bowls, two sets each. "We ought to have one set for each apartment so we don't have to move them back and forth across the hall every day. Do you want purple or blue?"

"You choose," Matt said. Josh looked happier, some color in his cheeks, and he looked over Matt's shoulder, studied the fruit in the pan. "Are those plums?"

Matt nodded, and Josh looked up and met his eyes. They were blue and clear, like the warm waters of the Aegean. "I'll take the blue bowls," Matt said.

Josh was studying the plums again. "Purple's good for me." He pointed to the pan. "Is there enough of that to share? I just spent my food money."

Josh watched with interest as the plum juice was folded into the ricotta, which was then folded into the beaten egg whites. Matt thought quickly about how to plate and serve food again, something he had not done in some time, since it was so much easier to eat out of the pot. Josh wouldn't mind eating out of the pot, he thought, but the plum soufflé was going to be so lovely it deserved plates. He had some French roast coffee, too.

When he had everything poured into the iron skillet, and into the oven, and a fresh pot of coffee brewing, he took off his apron and joined Josh on the loveseat. He had both puppies up on his lap, and they were curled up together, making snuffly little puppy noises. Josh scooted over to make room for him. "You sleep on the loveseat?"

"Yeah. I've got a sleeping bag I throw on the floor when I can't stand the loveseat anymore."

"But it's the kitchen, right? You took this place for the kitchen?"

"I have to cook, even if I can't do it in a restaurant. I've always loved to cook. I baked a Boston Cream Pie when I was six."

"Is that the one with the pudding in the middle? I like that cake. I haven't had it in years, though."

"It's gone out of style now -- seems old fashioned. But some classics have flavors you can't improve on."

Matt noticed the smell of the soufflé in the air, and the warmth of Josh's thigh next to his own, and the puppies curled up so sweetly, and he had a sudden urge to curl up himself, put his head on Josh's shoulder and sleep.

ISBN : 8-1-60521-516-7
 Genres: Paranormal, Hot Flashes
Themes: Christmas, Seasonal Themes, Elves, Dragons and Magical Creatures

Tali hopes the Christmas Magic of the Sugarplum Ball is strong enough to get Jax into her bed.

BLURB:

Tali's been secretly lusting after Jax since the spring breakup, but he insists on treating her like a sister. Tonight, all of the adult elves at the North Pole will be at the Sugarplum Ball. It's a night of Christmas Magic and dreams come true, and if Tali doesn't wake up in the morning with a naked hunk of an elf in the bed beside her, it won't be for lack of trying.

EXCERPT:

Tali nodded, trying to gather her scattered wits. If Jax thought he could give her one dance and then get away after a kiss like that, he was sadly mistaken. She melted into his arms; surely he couldn't miss the way they fit together. Perfectly. As if they'd been made for each other. The feel of his hand resting lightly on her waist sent a delicious tingle through her. He swept her out onto the dance floor, and unlike Davy, he was definitely the one doing the leading.

It may have been the music of the tango or the influence of the Christmas Magic that always managed to make the Sugarplum Ball a spectacular success. They moved flawlessly through the intricate moves, their gazes locked on each other while they dipped and swayed, taunted and retreated.

Tali licked her lips, tilting her chin up in a silent dare, and he responded instantly, pulling her in close and bending her back over his arm. His eyes twinkled with something dark, and he let her rest there, suspended horizontally by his strong arms. Heat roiled in her depths and she let a slow, sexy smile cover her lips.

The music quickened, the Latin beat sensual and insistent. Jax pulled her upright, twirling her away in a graceful arc. As she spun, she realized the crowd had withdrawn to the edge of the dance floor, letting her and Jax have center stage. Santa himself stood at the edge of the crowd, a tolerant smile on his face as Mrs. Claus beamed at her. Davy gave her a discreet thumbs-up from his position on the far side of the buffet table. She caught a brief glimpse of the chubby little elf from the mailroom hanging possessively onto Davy's arm.

Jax pulled her in hard against him, and his breath feathered warmly across her ear. "You are a tempting little minx. You should be careful or you might get more than you can handle."

"I'm tired of being careful. I intend to get what I want this night."

His dark brows arched. "And what would that be?"

She locked her gaze on his. "You."

He didn't answer. His feet flashed across the dance floor in time to the music and he swung her away from him, but she could see the thick bulge in his pants, evidence of his arousal. They followed the sensuous beat of the dance in silence, Tali very much aware of the eyes of the crowd on them.

Jax held her at arm's length, executing a quick turn, and an imp of mischief prompted her to fold herself in under his shoulder, her full breasts pressing against his hard chest. His swift intake of breath let her know he wasn't nearly as indifferent to her as he pretended. "What do you think you're doing?"

Tali smiled sweetly. "The tango. I believe humans use it as a form of foreplay."

Jax's eye narrowed. "We're not lovers."

Yet. Tali left the word unspoken and kicked her leg high to perform one of the many intricate turns and twirls of the dance. Elation swept through her as Jax moved opposite her in perfect harmony. They were made for each other. The music built to a crescendo, the beat accelerating. Tali could feel the tension between them soaring as they danced. His dark eyes flashed with a repressed sensuality that sent flickers of heat racing through her.

She used all of her wiles to tease him, rubbing her leg along his, moving her hips in a sensuous rhythm, touching him and then backing out of reach. His dark eyes smoldering with lust, he pulled her in close just as the music rose to its final note, and the crowd broke into a thunderous wave of applause.

Dipping his head, Jax seared a kiss across her lips before loosening his grip and turning to acknowledge their audience. They held hands and swept a low bow.

"Quite the performance!" Mrs. Claus bustled out onto the dance floor, clapping enthusiastically. She caught Tali's hands in hers, surprising her with a motherly peck on the cheek. "I just had to congratulate you on bringing the whole party to a halt while we watched our most eligible bachelor try to seduce you in plain sight!" She turned her head to wink at Jax. "I've been waiting for some cute little elf to capture his interest for almost two hundred years now. Don't make it too easy for him."

"I won't." Tali could feel the heat creeping up her neck as the crowd looked on with interest. "Although, I might just give him a chance to impress me tonight. Maybe the magic of the Sugarplum Ball will give him some inspiration."

Mrs. Claus laughed and patted her arm. "Enjoy your night. I have a little romancing of my own to do." She beamed a smile in the direction of Santa Claus.

Every Christmas, an ancient demon stalks and murders fairies. Until this killer is apprehended, each fairy is assigned a demon protector. Decimus volunteers to be Bitsy's protector. He's lusted after the Christmas fairy for years. Three days and three nights with Bitsy allows him to satisfy that lust.

Except that three days is not enough, and Bitsy won't grant him more, not unless he says, "I love you." That's a big problem. Demons don't love. Christmas fairies won't accept less. And evil never takes a holiday.

Christmas Fairies were supposed to be nice. They preached endlessly about goodwill on earth and other feel-good shit. Decimus glared at the green-skinned beauty buzzing around the diner, food-laden platters in her small hands. That goodwill clearly didn't extend to demons. If it did, Bitsy wouldn't now be torturing the hell out of him.

She brushed against his arm as she passed by. The casual contact made his cock twitch. His cock was already hard. It had been hard for her since he woke up this morning. On any other day of the year, Decimus would have taken care of that problem in the shower, but today was Christmas Eve. Today, his problem belonged to Bitsy.

Not that she cared. She bent over to refill a cup of coffee. Her skirt pulled up, exposing smooth green thigh. Decimus bared his teeth. He wished to bite that soft skin, marking her, declaring to the world that she was his. It didn't matter that he saw her for only three days out of every year. She belonged to him.

A blond-haired, pink-cheeked elf sitting in a nearby booth stared too intently at Bitsy's ass. Decimus growled. The elf met his gaze. Decimus allowed his eyes to glow red. The elf stuffed a pancake in his mouth, threw a wad of bills on the table, and ran out the diner door.

Bitsy tossed a frown over her shoulder. Decimus smiled serenely back, giving his best portrayal of innocence. He tapped his watch, and she rolled her emerald eyes. He sniffed the air, and his smile stretched into a demonic grin. She wasn't as unaffected by his presence as she feigned. He could smell her moist pussy.

She retraced her steps. This time when she brushed against him, he was prepared. He caught her arm. "If I don't get my order filled soon, Bits, I'll be taking it to go," he murmured into that curly green hair. She smelled like mint and Bitsy. Her nostrils flared. Her cheeks flushed a forest green. He was serious about taking action, and Decimus read that realization in her beautiful face.

"Your order is next, sir." She played waitress with him, her voice high and squeaky. He ran his palm down her arm before reluctantly letting her go.

She hurried to the counter, her hips swinging. "We're out of cream. I'm going to the storage room to get more," she informed her employees. She disappeared through a door.

Decimus stood, his body tense with anticipation. The storage room was a favorite rendezvous spot. He let a couple of minutes elapse before following. The employees watched, grins on their faces, but they didn't stop him. They couldn't stop him even if they wanted to. He was an ancient and powerful demon. He stomped down the stairs, following his Christmas Fairy's fresh scent. What he wanted, he got, and he wanted Bitsy, badly.

The door to the storage room was partially closed. He pushed it open. Bitsy's head was bowed as she unbuttoned her 50's style carhop waitress dress. Her apron was folded neatly on the shelf. "You're not wearing a bra," he observed. Her small breasts were bare, tipped with forest green nipples.

"I'm not wearing panties either." She shimmied out of the dress, catching the fabric before it fell to the dusty floor. "I figured there was no point. You'd bring me a pair to wear anyway."

She was right. The three pairs of enchanted panties, custom made for her, were tucked in his inside pocket. He shrugged out of his suit jacket, tossing it carelessly on top of a storage rack.

"The door," she reminded him, one hand placed over her breasts, the other over her green private hair. Her skin sparkled. She took his breath away.

"Right." He turned then slid the deadbolt across, locking the door. "This is new." Not many storage rooms had locks on the inside.

"I figured after last year..." She blushed a deep green. Last year, a new employee had caught them in a delicate position. She had been on her knees, giving him the blowjob of all blowjobs, her sweet mouth full of his hard cock. Getting caught had bothered Bitsy. Decimus, being a demon, wouldn't have cared if the entire planet had watched. She was that gifted.

"How's Phil?"

Joy Kingston took a sip of her latte. Joy and her best friends, Karin Taylor and Michelle Ames, were taking a break from Christmas shopping at the mall coffee house. "He dumped me."

Karin's blue eyes widened. "He what?"

Michelle gasped. "He didn't?"

"He did. He called last night. It's over."

"A week before Christmas!" Karin shook her head. "That's cruel."

"Bastard!" Michelle hadn't cared much for Phil.

Joy wasn't sure which was more upsetting, admitting another relationship had failed or Phil's parting words. Joy decided it was the latter. "He said now that he's decided to take a permanent position in Boston, a long distance relationship is impractical."

"Impractical?" Karin's eyes narrowed. "That's what he said?"

"Ever the accountant," Michelle chimed in, shoving a lock of honey-blonde hair out of her eyes.

Karin reached out and placed her hand over Joy's. "I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"

"I'm okay." Joy knew Phil wasn't the one and breaking up was for the best. "I cared for Phil, but I wasn't crazy-in-love with him."

"The new year is right around the corner. You'll find a new man to be crazy-in-love with," Michelle said.

Heartbroken she wasn't, but the big three-O birthday was Christmas day and she was still single. Michelle was married to a wonderful man and Karin was engaged, wedding in June.

Joy was letting a number get to her. So what if she was thirty and single? She'd live, but she didn't want to be alone, not for her thirtieth birthday.

Karin leaned forward and whispered, "Now that you and Phil are split, tell me how was he in bed?"

"Exactly like you'd expect an accountant to be, predictable, repetitive and methodical. His underwear has numbers on them."

Karin snorted, almost blowing the latte cream out her nose. "Maybe losing him wasn't such a bad thing?"

"You think?" Michelle said.

"Okay, Phil wasn't Mr. Forever, but my birthday celebration in Boston isn't going to happen and I'm stuck with a non-refundable plane ticket."

"Oh nooo! The big one," Karin said.

"Yeah. I'm going to be thirty in six days." Joy saw the panic in her friends' faces. They were both going away for Christmas, Michelle to her in-laws in Texas and Karin to her future in-laws in Florida. Joy's parents were on a cruise. Her older twin brothers were in the military and stationed overseas. Since she had no sisters, Joy had bonded with Michelle and Karin at the age of twelve. They'd been her best friends ever since. "Don't worry. I'll survive."

"We can't leave you alone," Michelle said. "Not on your big birthday."

Karin shook her head. "We've always been together for the holiday. It's not right."

Joy's mother and friends had always wrapped her birthday presents in flowery paper with bright purple ribbons and her Christmas presents in paper with snowmen and reindeers. Her habit was to unwrap her Christmas presents in the morning and her birthday presents later in the day. Over the years their efforts had made her birthday special while most of her relatives, including her father and her brothers, chose to lump her presents together.

"Don't even think about changing your plans." Joy knew she'd reached a moment in her life that demanded action. "Maybe it's time I did something outrageous for my birthday. Something wild."

"Wild?" Michelle looked at Karin. "Did she say wild?" Michelle shook her head. "Joy, you're not the wild type."

Now Joy was more determined to do something outrageous. "Whatever you've purchased for my birthday, take it back. I want something that will destroy the memory of Phil forever."

"I don't like where this is going," Karin said.

"I want a man for my birthday. I want sex. Not ordinary Phil sex, but passionate, curling-my-toes sex."

Michelle choked on her chai tea. "You want us to hire a male hooker? You're a legal assistant, isn't hiring sexual services against the law?"

"Not a hooker, a volunteer. Finding a man who likes sex shouldn't be that difficult. You don't want me to spend my big birthday alone, right?"

Her friends nodded.

"So find me a man." Excitement shot through Joy. Her blood was singing. Phil was history and the one guy she wanted... That wasn't ever going to happen. Thinking about Jake McCabe just made her heart hurt. It was time to take a walk on the wild side. "I want a guy wearing a big purple Happy Birthday bow around his neck at exactly midnight. I want him for twenty-four hours, and get me someone imaginative and untamed."
