Ivy held her breath as her ship slipped past the Sabrotine blockade. Black market shields assured the patrol cruisers were unable to detect the nimble Chrysalis. Still, Ivy never breathed easy until they were well out of range.
"Almost there," Bluz said.
The previous owner of the Chrysalis had offered to throw in the indenture contracts of Bluz and his brother Jazz, if Ivy would pay full price for the spaceship. The brothers knew more about the Chrysalis than anyone alive, so Ivy had reluctantly agreed. When the terms of their contracts matured, Ivy offered them paid positions and they had been the heart of her twelve-man crew ever since.
"All clear, captain." Bluz winked at her. "You can exhale."
She smiled and blew out an exaggerated breath.
"Jazz to Slane," an agitated voice transmitted over the general comlink. "We've got a slight... complication." Jazz was head of security and he was extremely hard to rattle, so his obvious hesitation sent a chill down Ivy's spine.
"What's the nature of this complication?" She glanced at Bluz. He shrugged his broad shoulders and turned back to his scanner console, likely identifying his brother's exact location.
"We have a stowaway."
"A what?"
"An unauthorized passenger in cargo bay three."
Any passenger would be unauthorized. The Chrysalis was strictly a cargo ship. "I'll be right there."
Jazz had the stowaway backed against a waist-high crate. The cavernous bay was nearly empty as they had just off-loaded on Palonti. All Ivy could see was sleek black hair and the person's upraised hands. The echo of her boot heels against the textured alloy floor drew a quick glance from her head of security.
"He hasn't said a word," Jazz informed her. "I'm not sure he understands Standard."
Ivy approached cautiously, making sure Jazz had a clear shot at their uninvited guest. Tall and lean, the man shared the rich bronzed skin of those native to Palonti. Thick-lashed pastel blue eyes and the most sensual mouth Ivy had ever seen momentarily muddled her thoughts. He was saved from being pretty by a firm jaw and broad shoulders, but her nipples tightened and her body stirred just looking at the man.
"Are you able to understand me?" She spoke in a calm, non-threatening tone.
"Aletro din rakins tro'slen mentle?"
She recognized the cadence of the Palontian language, but she didn't comprehend his words. The Sabrotine Federation had been in the process of incorporating Palonti into their mighty empire when the local government rebelled. Would he understand Sabrotine?
"Do you know these words?"
"No Palontian willingly utilizes them, but we appear to have no alternative." He spoke Sabrotine with an intriguing accent, which only added to his exotic appeal. His dark blue jacket was elaborately embroidered in gold and left open, displaying the firm planes and rippling definition of his torso. Similar embroidery ran down the side seams of his formfitting pants and a golden cord crisscrossed from waist to crotch, accenting the considerable bulge beneath. The gaudy outfit, and his haughty stance, reminded her of an ancient matador.
She dragged her gaze back to his face and inclined her head. "I'm Captain Ivy Slane and your presence here is a violation of --"
"You command this vessel?" He glanced at Jazz and made a derisive sound. "Are there no able bodied males for such duties?"
"Sorry. You're stuck with me." She pretended indifference to his arrogance. "I'm within my rights to shove you out the nearest airlock. Do you realize that?"
"You will not." He made the statement with absolute confidence. "I am far too valuable."
"Valuable to whom?"
"Take me to your quarters and I'll demonstrate."

"They have got to be friggin' kidding me. There's no way I'm setting foot on that godforsaken island again. They can kiss my ass." Shelby Morgenson threw the letter down on the coffee table and paced her living room floor.

The nerve of them! How dare they send her another invitation to Chimera! What made the proprietors think she'd want to give them another try? To think that a little over a year ago she'd been so happy. But then her dreams had been dashed just like that.

It was hard not to think of the heartache and betrayal she'd suffered, even after all this time. Shelby remembered the first time she'd gotten a letter like this one. It said she'd won a trip to an all expenses paid resort. All she'd have to do in return was rate their services for a travel brochure.

Her family warned her that what seemed too good to be true probably was, but being the only sibling without a family of her own was lonely. She'd needed to get away and sort herself out. She figured even if staying on the island did cost her something, it would be worth the stay.

"What's wrong, sis?" Cindy asked, patting her three-month-old daughter on the back, trying to get her to burp.

Shelby handed her the letter and watched her sister frown as she glanced over the contents. "Is this something you're considering?"

"Hell no. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. I'm staying away from that godforsaken island. Besides, I just got approved for a loan to open my own nature shop. I have too much on my plate to deal with that crap right now -- or ever."

"Well, I can't really say that I blame you, hon. You were handed a pretty raw deal. For that year we had no word from you, we thought the worst. Now the thought of you going to that place again to meet God knows what is scary. They could whisk you off to some heathen place, and who knows how long it will be before we hear from you this time."

"You're preaching to the choir, Cindy. I want nothing to do with Chimera Island or its inhabitants."

"Good girl. This is probably the best decision. Besides, from what you've told me, those... creatures over there turned on you. If you went back, you could meet something or someone far worse."

Shelby rolled her eyes. She loved her older sister, but once Cindy got on a rant it was hard to stop her. "Yeah, Cindy, I know."

"And another thing. I'm still a little miffed at you for not giving me the full story. I thought we were close. You used to tell me everything."

"I did when we were kids, but now we have separate lives. You have your own family to worry about." Just then her niece, Emily, let out a loud belch. A content smile spread on her cherubic face.

"That's Mommy's good girl," Cindy cooed, smoothing down Emily's flaxen curls.

Shelby held out her arms. "Let me hold her."

Cindy handed over the gurgling baby, mindful of Emily's head and neck. Shelby's heart melted as her niece rested a soft cheek against hers. Holding the baby close, she inhaled the fresh powder scent. She walked over to her couch and sat down to tickle the baby's tummy. "Hey, pretty girl."

Emily blew a spit bubble and waved a starfish-shaped hand in the air.

Shelby released an inward sigh. When would it be her turn? At thirty-five she was tired of being the doting aunt. She wanted to have a couple of rug rats of her own. She supposed, if she really wanted to, she could visit a sperm bank, but the traditionalist in her found the thought of having a turkey baster as her child's father distasteful.

She wanted a husband, some animals and the proverbial white picket fence -- the whole nine yards. Shelby realized hers wasn't the most modern attitude, and the feminists would have a field day with her, but there it was. She'd already accomplished so much in her life, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in forestry, the outdoors being her passion. She'd traveled the world, had her dream job, and was now starting her own business. What was wrong with wanting to share all of that with someone?

"She's gotten so big since the last time you brought her over here, and her features are getting more distinctive."

Cindy plopped down next to her. "Yes, she is adorable. I'm annoyed that I was the one who carried her for nine months but she looks like Bob, right down to her smile. I think I was just an incubator. You know, after four kids, you'd think I'd have one who looks like me," she sighed with disgust.

"Hey, the man has super sperm."

Cindy rolled her eyes. "Super sperm my hiney. You should see him walking around the house like a rooster with his chest all puffed out."

"But you love him."

A content smile touched the older woman's pink lips. "Yes, I do, and I pray that you'll find a man who'll love and respect you for who you are. You're smart, beautiful, and kind."

Shelby laughed with an ironic titter. "I thought I'd found that, but I guess I was wrong."

"You never really went into detail about what happened when you went to live with those men. That's another thing I found a little shocking about the whole fiasco you got yourself involved in. What manner of people were they that allowed a woman to be with three men? While I'm sure having three guys is nice fantasy material, the reality has to be a whole lot different."

The reality had been much better, until things went horribly wrong, she wanted to say, but instead Shelby said, "I hardly believe what happened to me either. When I came back, I had to fake amnesia for the sake of the press and the others because no way would anyone believe what I'd gone through. You're the only one who knows anything about my experiences on Chimera and Laiocean. If I told the others, they'd have me committed."

"I'm still debating whether I should have you committed, but even as a kid you were never one to make up wild stories."

"I don't think I could make up anything like this if I tried. Things that we thought were just stories to scare and amuse us when we were children are real. Vampires, Werewolves, Incubi, Aliens, Demons, and things I can't even name roamed that island freely. It was like a big Halloween party but everyone wore beach gear."

"Tell me about the three men... creatures you were with?"

Shelby shifted her now sleeping niece in her arms. "What's there to say? I fell in love with them and they broke my heart."

"All of them?"

"Yes. It's so weird because I used to think you can only love one person, but I loved them all equally and intensely. There was something special about every one of them. Tegor was the tall, dark warrior. They were all virile, alpha males, but Tegor... he would throw me against the wall, pull my hair back, take what he wanted, and make me like it. Then there was Rain -- his smile was contagious. He always knew what to say to bring my spirits up and he made me laugh. Geho was the silent, tender one. We could communicate without even speaking."

Shelby's mind drifted to the time when she'd first met them. She'd been on the beach and couldn't quite get her suntan lotion on her entire back. That's when three gorgeous men approached her to offer their services. Each one of them had been tall and broad, with aquamarine eyes. Tegor had been the dark one with long hair the color of a moonless sky, shaggy and wild. Rain's stick straight brown hair rested on his shoulders while Geho had a mop of dark blond curls giving him an almost angelic look.

With just one glance, her bikini bottom had become instantly wet. They were so gorgeous she didn't even notice their tails until later on in their acquaintance when they revealed to her that they were shifters. Hesitant at first about being with three men at once, Shelby soon found herself falling hard for each one of them.

Cindy cleared her throat to get Shelby's attention. "Hmm. Except for the freaky sex part, I have all of that in Bob. Why do you need three guys to provide you with what one good man can do?"

"It's hard to explain. They all shared a lot of the same qualities, but each one of them brought something to the table. As for finding a guy with all those qualities, come on. What world do you live in? As wonderful as you claim Bob is, don't you sometimes complain that you wish you two were more intimate at times and you wish he'd do more around the house? No one is perfect and neither were they, but the connection was undeniable."

"Until they turned their backs on you at the first sign of trouble. Some men they turned out to be."

"It's a shame we have to leave this gorgeous island." Trina sighed, stretching out on the beach, letting the sun's rays tickle her body with their warmth.

Bayoh dropped a light kiss on her stomach. "I'll miss Chimera as well, but we've been absent from Laiocean for two weeks now. Our people are probably wondering when we're coming back." He chuckled.

"Of course they know we'll be back. Word was sent last week, but you so convincingly persuaded us to stay another week," Roar added.

"As if you're complaining. Besides, the first week didn't count." Trina pouted.

Roar lifted his blond head, his aquamarine eyes staring at her with confusion. "How do you mean?"

"Well, I spent most of the week fighting what I felt for the three of you so I didn't completely enjoy the full experience of the island," she reasoned.

Roar ran his hand along the expanse of her stomach. "You're gorgeous," he murmured. "Hmm, perhaps you didn't enjoy the first half of the vacation, but there were no complaints at night."

Trina giggled. "Yes, I suppose you're right. You guys gave me nothing to complain about at night. Speaking of which, shouldn't we go back to our bungalow if we're going to take this any further?"

Bayoh nuzzled her neck. "You're ready to fuck again?"

She shivered. Talh moved to her feet and began to kiss her ankles. Roar moved closer and fondled her breasts with large skilled hands. "We can't do this right here in the middle of the beach. Anyone could just walk up on us," she moaned, despite the delicious sensations coursing through her body.

"This is our private stretch of beach, remember?" Roar grinned, trailing his fingers along her stomach again.

Trina sighed, arching her back against their touches. She couldn't remember a time when she'd been this content. Her heart swelled with love for these three gorgeous hunks. Each had his own distinct personality. Roar was the lighthearted one and often the spokesperson for the group. He made her laugh and realize that life didn't always have to be so serious.

Bayoh was fiery. He shot straight from the hip and his directness sometimes took her breath away. He was a man's man. He had a way of making her feel like a woman. Then there was Talh. Though quiet and often serious, he was the most sensitive of the three. The intensity of his aqua gaze left her panting. He was always tender and gentle with her.

If someone had told her a few weeks ago that she'd fall in love with three men, she'd have laughed, especially since Trina had sworn off men after finding her live-in boyfriend in bed with her best friend. Her best male friend.

Her mind briefly drifted to Tim of the golden skin and long dreadlocks. He was handsome, and a good lay, but a good-for-nothing bum who apparently was also bi-sexual. She'd threatened to cut off his penis after catching him in bed with Twan. The last time she'd seen him, he was running buck naked out of her house. He was probably doing okay now. His kind always managed to land on their feet.

That didn't matter anymore. She'd be starting a new life with three men she was madly in love with. At times it was scary to think about how she'd fallen so hard and fast for them. She was still trying to reconcile the fact that they weren't human and actually beings called Manani, a people whose natural form was leonine.

It frightened her when they'd shifted in front of her for the first time, so after that one night they'd stayed in their humanoid form. It was something she'd grow used to in time, but for now she was happy to see them as two-legged men rather than four-legged cats.

Chimera.

Trina would miss this magical island that had brought them together. Who would have thought the free vacation would actually turn out so wonderfully? When she'd received a letter in the mail stating that she won a free vacation, Trina smelled a rat. People like her didn't win free vacations, not without a catch. Normally she would have thrown the letter away and not given it another thought, but because her life had been in disarray at the time of its arrival, she'd called the number in a weak moment.

She'd booked the vacation and was told she'd only have to take a survey at the end to tell the people in charge what she thought of the island. Things had been great in the beginning and she actually began to take the place at face value. The island was gorgeous, the staff courteous, and her accommodations were something right out of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

Then she began seeing things that just weren't supposed to be, like winged people, talking animals, men who looked like elves. That's when she knew Chimera was no ordinary island. Around the time of this discovery was when she met Roar, Bayoh, and Talh. They'd pursued her relentlessly until she lost the will to run.

The fact that they had tails didn't register until she'd already fallen under their spell. She smiled as she remembered that first night with them. It had certainly been something to remember.

Bayoh lifted one dark brow, his lips twisted in amusement. "What do you find so funny?"

Trina's smile widened, her eyes locking with his. "I'm just thinking of our first night together. You three probably thought I was a little bit crazy."

"Not crazy, just confused. We could hardly expect you not to be apprehensive as you've never known one of our kind before." Roar trailed his hand over her hot skin, his fingertips resting just above the top of her bikini bottom. Trina sucked in her breath in anticipation. She wanted to feel his fingers on and inside her pussy.

Obviously reading her actions correctly, Roar cocked his blond head to the side, a grin splitting his face when he undid the ties on her bikini bottom. Talh kissed and massaged her feet and ankles while Bayoh bent his dark head to nuzzle one throbbing breast with the side of his face.

"Oh, my goodness," she moaned, wanting more.

Roar pulled her bikini bottom away, leaving Trina naked from the waist down. Her body shook with desire. She had to bite her lower lip to stop herself from screaming, not wanting someone to hear them.

"Don't hold anything back, Trina. Scream for us if you want," Talh whispered. A lock of dark red hair fell over his forehead as he ran his lips along the side of her calves.

"This may be a private beach, but what if someone heard us?" She groaned, finding it hard to concentrate when Roar's hand was steadily inching toward her damp slit.

"So what? Let them. They'll know without a doubt that you belong to us."

"So Agent Wanetee, to what do I owe the honor of your esteemed presence?" Malik smiled. The auburn-haired madam had managed to keep most of the sarcasm from her voice, but her expressive blue eyes revealed her apprehension. "After the success of my recent mission, my superiors insisted I take some time off and enjoy the amenities of Earth." Another smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. "As we both know, the embassies supply the only form of recreation remaining on Earth, and your embassy is the best."
Autumn scooted to the edge of her chair and folded her hands on the desktop. Unlike the lavish grandeur of the embassy's common rooms, her office was small and cozy. Her features remained calm, almost serene, while her gaze narrowed with speculation. "Do you have a specific adventure in mind, or would you like me to create something unexpected?"
"I'd like to experience one of your 'seasons.' You are under contract with General Noirte, so I presume you're not available, but I would like access to either Winter, Spring, or Summer." He watched her closely, waiting for the flicker of panic sure to result from his request. She inclined her head, acknowledging his statement then glanced at her folded hands.
A trail of suspicious incidents had followed in the wake of Autumn's "seasons." The men involved always remembered a passionate night with an uninhibited beauty, yet the information leaks and unexplained failures had no other common denominator.
"I'm afraid the ambassadors you've mentioned are all under contract elsewhere." Autumn produced a thin smile. "I'm sure I can find --"
"Ulrick Brant contracted Winter, and Spring hasn't been seen since Evard Keenan mysteriously disappeared. Who claimed Summer?" His voice hesitated over the word claimed, making it sound harsh and accusatory.
Autumn paled as she worried her bottom lip. "Summer went to... That is, Summer is currently unavailable. My clients depend upon my discretion. I'm sure you understand."
He could easily verify any destination she supplied, so she'd been wise to keep her excuse vague. "You will make her available to me, or I will close this embassy. The best and brightest of your employees might be absorbed by your competitors, but I suspect the majority of your ambassadors would be forced to enter the work force."
"There's no reason for threats, Agent Wanatee." Her shoulders squared and determination reignited within her eyes. "Summer's contract allows her to choose her customers. I'll present her with your proposal and see if --"
"Why would you allow her such privileges? None of the other embassies have... free agents."
"I assure you, Summer is anything but free. The seasons are special. They make themselves available to an extremely limited clientele. Only the most wealthy and powerful are able to afford their services."
"Cost is no obstacle. I can afford any fee you set. I would prefer to be one of your loyal customers, but I am prepared to be your adversary. The decision is yours." He pushed his chair back and stood, gazing down at her as she fidgeted behind her desk. "I require your finest suite for one week, and I expect Summer to be waiting when I return tomorrow evening." Without waiting for her reaction, he turned and left the room.

Establishing a telepathic link with his sister, Ray Burton brought the tiered lecture hall into focus. Aurora fidgeted, obviously sensing his uninvited presence. Ray ignored the sunny salon physically surrounding him and concentrated on the images forming within his mind.

Is there something wrong with your video phone? she grumbled. I can stream her image to you.

And have Delano go off on me again? Ray shuddered. I don't think so. Delano had been furious when he'd opened last month's phone bill. Ever practical Delano hadn't seen the humor in the exorbitant charges. Look from side to side. Give me some perspective.

Despite her mental objection, Aurora swept the room with an assessing stare. She sat halfway up in the auditorium and slightly right of center. A perfect vantage point, but where was the subject of his curiosity?

Is she often late?

Nope. Laughter chimed through Aurora's tone. She must have known you were coming.

Before Ray could respond to her smartass remark, the door at the far end of the hall swung open.

Aurora closed her eyes.

That's not funny! Ray gave her the mental equivalent of a shake. Her lids lifted. A tall, broad-shouldered man walked across the room and set a stack of folders on the table centered in the presentation area. Ray groaned. Who the hell is he?

He's a grad student, used to play football, but wasn't good enough to turn pro. Now he's Professor Lamar's assistant.

Ray snorted. I never would have guessed.

Do you think she has him do more than grade papers?

Tension knotted Ray's gut at the thought. He had yet to meet Chelsea Lamar, but every instinct he possessed told him she was the one.

Yeah, Sam was certain too and look how that turned out. At this intensity, their telepathic link transmitted thoughts and emotions as well as images. If he tried to conceal his thoughts, Aurora would realize her comment upset him, so he let her feel his frustration, his restlessness. You better leave the final decision to Delano. He's still capable of thinking with his head.

As much as he hated to admit it, Aurora was right. He couldn't afford to be rash and reckless, even if those were his primary personality traits.

The door swung open again and Chelsea strode into the lecture hall. Ray's heartbeat accelerated and blood rushed to his groin. Aurora's description hadn't begun to do Chelsea justice. Her tailored slacks draped stylishly over curvaceous hips and an ivory silk blouse showcased her full breasts.

Damn. Why didn't you tell me she was so delectable?

I'm not much of a judge when it comes to female delectability.

He took control of Aurora's gaze and admired Chelsea's lush breasts. He could detect a lacy bra beneath the sheer silk and the faintest shadow of her nipples.

Cut it out! What if someone catches me staring at her boobs?

Ray eased off, focusing on Chelsea's heart-shaped face. Framed by sleek golden brown hair, her smooth skin glowed with a rosy blush. Slim nose, wide, thick-lashed gray-green eyes, each feature complemented the others.

"Sorry I'm late. My car died out on the Beltway." Her well modulated voice played over Ray's senses, caressing him, arousing him.

"Hello." Sam, Ray's brother, shook his chair, disrupting his concentration. "Is anybody in there?"

Ray eased out of Aurora's mind and the spacious salon refocused. His chair faced the massive windows looking out over the backyard. For generations the Burton family had occupied this house. Their unique needs made privacy necessary, not just preferable.

"Where were you just now?" Sam asked.

"Sneaking a peek at Chelsea Lamar."

A smile bowed Sam's lips. "Then you're thinking about doing it? Has Delano agreed?"

"Delano has no idea what I'm up to, and I have no intention of telling him."

"What?" Sam's incredulous expression made Ray laugh. "You have to tell him. Don't be ridiculous."

Ray stood and raked a hand through his hair. "He's been unapproachable since the debacle with Thane and Kelly. Not that he was especially congenial before."

"No one blames him for what happened. He tried to warn us. We wouldn't listen." Sam shook his head. Late afternoon sunlight shone in his wavy blond hair. "Convince him to conduct a Discernment. If I'd accepted --"

"He won't do it. He hasn't accessed any of his abilities since Thane went into seclusion. That's why my plan is our only hope."

"You're crazy. No, he'll go crazy. You can't spring this on him."

"You should see her, Sam. She's perfect. I'm not wasting this opportunity because Delano is in a snit."

Sam shook his head, scrubbing his chin with his hand. "There has to be a better way."

"Maybe. And maybe I'll turn gray waiting for Delano to pull his head out of his ass. My flight for Chimera leaves tomorrow morning. Delano will just have to deal."

With his heartbeat thundering in his ears, Evard Keenan triple checked the results of his most recent simulation. If this data were accurate, and he had no reason to believe otherwise, he had finally found a stable antidote for the Gathosian compound.

Hope and dread bombarded him from opposite sides, shredding his composure. He wanted to shout for joy and scream in frustration, but he couldn't afford to draw attention to himself with any sort of emotional outburst. Concealing his conflict behind professional detachment, he quickly saved the simulation and encrypted the file. He pushed back from his workstation and stood, glancing around the modest lab. Everything was neat and orderly, and he was alone.

What had he expected? He was always alone, unless he counted Inwatta's unwanted visits or the infrequent appearance of one of the guards.

Inwatta, his enemy and tormentor. She often appeared when he allowed his thoughts to dwell on her, so he tried to shove the subject from his mind. The Gathosians had arrived on Earth four years ago, but he'd been their prisoner much longer. His people, the Bartonese, had the unhappy distinction of being compatible with Gathosian energy. The Bartonese also had regenerative capabilities seldom found in humanoid species. As a result, they were often used as physical hosts and corporeal anchors for the interdimensional conquerors.

Evard gave himself a firm mental shake. Thinking about Inwatta's people was not drawing his thoughts far enough away from his hated captor, and it was imperative that he solidify a strategy before he encountered her again.

It had taken him the better part of six years to refine the formula, and he still wasn't certain it would work in real life conditions. How could he move beyond theory when he was isolated from the rest of the world? He needed access to a fully mechanized lab and numerous test subjects.

Earth based technology was a bit primitive, but it was easily salvaged from the abandoned sections of any city. Finding people willing to participate in a clinical trial would be no problem either. The Gathosians used addiction as their primary control mechanism. Every person on Earth, from the lowliest worker to the heads of the Protectorate, craved regular doses of the compound.

Which meant freeing the population from this addiction was counterproductive to the Gathosians. They would kill Evard without hesitation if they realized he'd succeeded in mapping the elemental makeup of their compound and systematically constructing a combination of chemicals that would nullify the compound's effects.

Have you missed me? He caught a shimmer out of the corner of his eye as the thought spread through his mind. I'm sorry I've been so neglectful lately. It hasn't been by choice.

After weeks of spiteful attempts to motivate him to submit to her twisted desires, Inwatta had been suspiciously absent for the past few days. Evard suspected her superiors had taken her to task for her erratic behavior and neglecting her duties, but he couldn't be sure. All he knew was her absence had allowed him the time he needed to finalize his formula.

"I've had plenty of work to keep me busy." Pouring energy into his mental shields, he blocked her intrusion as much as possible. An energy tether anchored her to his mind, so it was never possible to shut her out completely. However, forcing her will upon him risked unwanted damage, so she preferred indirect motivations when settling their differences.

He walked to the wall nearest the sparkling cloud that indicated her presence and activated the display. He'd prepared this file months ago, hoping the day would come when he would need it. "You asked me to refine the compound, to strengthen each dose by twenty-five percent so the drug can be administered less often." Information scrolled down the wall, complete with diagrams and projections. "If these simulations are correct, I've increased potency by thirty-seven percent. This will lower your cost as well as decrease the amount of compound needed to sustain the current population."

Has the new compound been tested?

A thrill shot up his spine, and he fought back a smile. She had neatly stepped into his carefully laid trap. "Shall I try it on the guards?" He tried not to sound too sarcastic. "They're the only humanoids with whom I have any interaction. Unless you expect me to try it on myself, of course."

Her illumination spun and darkened, taking on the basic shape of a person. He didn't know if the Gathosians had corporeal bodies in their home dimension. Their interest in tangible resources indicated they did. Yet her obsession with physical pleasures seemed to be caused by never having experienced them before. Either way, it was only their energy and consciousness that traveled between dimensions and wreaked havoc on other worlds.

"You need something from me, and I want something from you." Her voice was audible now, the tone decidedly female. More and more these days, Inwatta chose female characteristics. He wasn't sure if she related more easily with the gender or if she thought it pleased him. "Can we finally come to an understanding?"

He touched the wall, deactivating the display. "Increased potency benefits you. I couldn't care less if it works or not."

She spun around the room like a petulant tornado, knocking over chairs and toppling a utensil tray. He watched the display with dispassionate indifference. They were locked in a stalemate, and she knew it.

Hovering in front of him again, she shoved him back with the force of her bluster. "You are the most irrational creature I have ever encountered! Why will you not allow me this one pleasure?"

"This one pleasure" was fucking some unsuspecting female while Inwatta inhabited her body. No, it was even more disgusting than that. Inwatta wanted him to willingly have sex with her while in the host body, to pleasure her in any way she requested, knowing all the while that she was his enemy.

"You can inhabit my body at any time and force me to do whatever you choose. I can't stop you, and we both know it. But I will end my life before I willingly give you pleasure." He spoke the vow without rancor or passion. It was a simple statement of fact.

After a long, tense pause, Inwatta asked, "Will you let me watch?"

He closed his eyes with a heavy sigh. "Why won't you let this go? You've forced me to perform every sexual act you could think of since I've been your anchor. You must know what sex feels like by now."

"That's just it. I've either compelled or coerced you every step of the way."

Unsure where this unexpected turn was leading, Evard opened his eyes. "Then what do you want from me this time?"

"I will arrange for as many test subjects as you want if you make love to a female of your own free will. Abandon yourself completely to the pleasure. Hold nothing back."

His pulse raced, and his mind buzzed with possibilities. He couldn't allow her to see how important these test subjects were, or how tempted he was by her suggestion. Not since before his captivity had he immersed himself completely in carnal pleasures, allowing himself to be utterly swept away.

He shrugged then crossed his arms over his chest, retreating into his role. "I said it before, testing the refined compound benefits you, not me. What do I get out of this arrangement?"

"What do you want? You can't imagine how well I'll indulge you if you'll just stop fighting me. Most anchors are spoiled rotten. They live in comfort and luxury. You won't allow me to pamper you."

Most anchors were traitors who willingly sold their souls to the enemy! Asking for his freedom was a waste of breath, but he had to think of something. Something she would be reluctant to grant, yet within the realm of possibility. "I want three full days and nights alone with the female first, and I mean completely alone. If I sense you for even a moment, all bets are off."

Inwatta glowed brighter, her excitement rippling into Evard's mind. "Two days alone, and on the third night you allow me to flow freely between you and your lover."

"You said you wanted to watch. That means outside, looking in!"

"We're negotiating. If you want to be alone with her, you have to offer me more."

He shuddered, revolted by the compromise. Always before Inwatta had been in control, using his body like a puppet for her own enjoyment. Cooperating with her on any level made it all so much more degrading. But there was so much more at stake than his pride, or his pleasure. If the antidote was ineffective, or even toxic, he had to know before it was distributed among the masses.

Unable to bear the humiliation of what he was about to do, he looked away from Inwatta. "No compulsions, and you keep your presence light enough that the woman is unaware."

"Agreed."

Hating himself a little more with each passing moment, he asked, "Where will you find the female?"

"That's entirely up to you. Would you prefer a refinery rat or a pleasure ambassador?"

What an abysmal choice. The Gathosian invasion had left human females with very few alternatives. "I want her willing, but the thought of fucking a woman who has been passed around from man to man is... distasteful to me."

Inwatta scoffed. "Then you're on the wrong planet. Monogamist relationships aren't just impractical, they're basically impossible under the current circumstances."

"You're the ultimate authority in this sector. I will not fuck a terrified virgin, but I don't want a practiced whore. You've been in my mind often enough to know what appeals to me. Find me such a woman, or our deal is off."

Feeling more like an errant schoolgirl than the lady of the house, Isabella Ruiz paused outside her father's office. It didn't matter that she was twenty-seven years old and director of a multi-million dollar foundation. Her father continually thought of, and treated her like, a child.

She smoothed down her narrow skirt and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear before announcing her presence with a firm knock.

"It's open." Though muffled, her father's voice was easily recognizable.

She pushed the door open and stepped into the book-lined room. "You sent for me?" A touch of annoyance revealed her impatience. She had too much to do to indulge her father's need to run her life.

"Actually, I requested your presence." Like the welcome caress of a steamy shower, an unfamiliar voice flowed across her senses.

She turned and looked at the speaker, expecting someone as dark and sensual as his voice. Nearly black and filled with secrets, his thick-lashed eyes were the only feature that fulfilled her expectations. His hair was blond, short on the sides, yet longer on top, with a tendency to spill across his forehead. She wanted to push her fingers through those wayward strands, removing the distraction from his sculpted features. With his muscular build and light complexion, the stranger looked more Viking than Valentino.

He pushed to his feet and held out his hand. "Steffen Ziegler." Dressed in jeans and a pullover shirt, he was worlds apart from the staid executives who usually visited her father.

"If you asked to see me, I presume you know my name." His long, cool fingers enfolded her hand and awareness rushed across her nerve endings. Her heartbeat staggered then raced, unable to find a steady rhythm. She inhaled slowly and licked her lips.

His gaze focused on her mouth and those night black eyes began to smolder. "I know many things, Ms. Ruiz. I just hope you're willing to benefit from my experience."

Her brow arched at his arrogance. "Is there a particular subject in which you wish to enlighten me, or shall I just bask in your august presence?"

"Bella." Her father's tone snapped with warning, but Steffen smiled.

"Your father told me you can be... challenging. Why don't you have a seat and I'll explain why I'm here?"

Unusually aware of her every movement, she slipped into one of the two chairs situated in front of the mahogany desk. She crossed her legs and took a deep breath, amazed that her father would allow anyone else to dominate a conversation. It wasn't like Hector Ruiz to accept a passive role in any situation.

Steffen moved to one side of the desk and crossed his arms over his chest. She could see both men without turning her head, which was likely the reason he'd chosen the position. The odd awareness lingered, subdued by the lack of physical contact, but undeniably there.

"Do you know the Burton family?" Steffen began.

"I know of them." She shot her father a confounded glance, wishing she could send her thoughts as pureblood Dichotomy could. Who was this guy? How much did he know about their people?

Easily interpreting her expression, her father said, "Steffen knows about the Dichotomy. You may speak freely."

She turned back to the handsome inquisitor. "Have the Burtons acted inappropriately? What do they have to do with me?"

"The Burtons are in the middle of a blood feud with the Nicholsons."

"The Burtons would object to that characterization," her father said. "The Nicholsons have been fugitives for years. The Burtons have simply been the focus of their hostilities."

"We have reason to believe their focus has expanded to include the entire council."

Bella tried not to reveal her impatience. "Father employs a fulltime security staff. Threats against the council are nothing new."

"And will this fulltime security staff be able to protect you from beings who can instantaneously appear and also penetrate your mental shielding?"

"The Nicholsons have no such abilities."

Steffen unfolded his arms and took a step toward her. "The Nicholsons are no longer your primary concern. If I'm not mistaken, Valerie is the only one still on the loose."

"She is," Hector confirmed. "Now stop sparring with Bella and get to the point."

"Valerie has formed an alliance with a vampire named Taerok."

"A vampire?" She looked back at her father, but his features remained expressionless. "Vampires are even more xenophobic than we are. Why would a vampire align himself with an obscure Dichotomy?"

"A very good question." Hector rested his hands on the desktop and gazed at Steffen expectantly.

"We're not sure about Taerok's motivation, but they're definitely working together."

"Or at least they were three weeks ago," Hector said. "There have been no new attacks in all that time. Isn't it possible the vampire was hired for that one occasion?"

"Possible, but not likely."

The Dichotomy could sense each other. Even a halfling like Bella recognized the unique energy pattern of her father's people. Steffen wasn't a Dichotomy. In fact, she'd never sensed anyone quite like him. Sunlight spilled into the office through the open blinds, so he couldn't be a vampire. Could he?

"How did you become involved in this?" she asked their enigmatic visitor.

"Leos Burton asked for our help identifying the vampire he'd encountered during his latest confrontation with the Nicholsons. It wasn't hard for us to determine who we were dealing with."

"You keep saying 'us' and 'we.' Do you belong to some sort of organization?"

"We're rather like human special forces, discreet, yet merciless. We're not the sort of team you contact if you're looking for diplomacy."

The answer was vague at best, so she made her question more specific. "Are you a vampire or a vampire hunter?"

"My species is irrelevant to this conversation. Taerok has developed an interest in the Dichotomy, and Valerie Nicholson is making sure he focuses that interest on people with a connection to the council. Are you such a person?"

"You know I am."

"I've left detailed instructions with your father. I recommend you follow them to the letter."

"What sort of instructions?"

"The sort that will keep you alive. As of right now, there has been no collateral damage. I'd like to keep it that way."

Clutching Grizzly Winters' burly body to her naked breasts, Cub rocked her protector back and forth as tears streamed down her face. Fear had given way to rage, and finally anguish as the life faded from his pale blue eyes. "Don't you die on me. Don't you dare! Please, Grizzly. Talk to me."

"You knew about this! Didn't you?" The captains circled King, like sharks attracted to blood in the water. "You're king. You had to know."

"I swear, Grizzly told no one," King insisted.

"Was he fucking her?"

The question sent a fresh wave of fury stabbing into Cub. "You disgusting pigs! You're all so worried about fucking; you can't think of anything else! He was like a pa to me! He took care of me and taught me, but he never laid a hand on me." She buried her face in Grizzly's wiry hair as hard sobs robbed her of speech.

"King, tell me exactly what happened. How was it discovered that Cub was female and who killed Grizzly?"

She was used to hearing Tomlinson's voice over the loudspeaker, but she wasn't surprised to find him here. Tomlinson always turned up when things went wrong. Holding Grizzly close, she waited to see if King would tell it true, or if she'd need to step in and set things straight.

"Griz heard Cub screaming and went to see what was wrong." King looked at her, eyes hot and hungry. "Greg and Toad had Cub down on the floor. They was gonna take a poke at him, but when they got his pants off the surprise was on them."

Everyone started laughing, and Cub pressed her fists over her ears, screaming, "It ain't funny! If I'd been a boy, they'd have hurt me bad."

Tomlinson moved toward her, all clean pressed suit and fake smiles. "None of this is funny, Cub. You've been very brave." As quick as his compassion appeared it evaporated. He turned back to King, and she was all but forgotten. "Who killed Grizzly?"

"He went after Greg and Toad. No one blames him for that, but he wouldn't stop. His captain warned him to stop. Even I warned him. He left us no choice."

"He knew it had been for nothing." She paused for a sneer. "Griz promised my pa he'd protect me, or die trying. Looks like he kept his word." She wiped her nose on the back of her hand. "He went down swinging 'cause those two wouldn't jerk off like everyone else!"

A man stepped out of the shadows beyond Tomlinson, and the breath caught in Cub's throat. His hair was light, golden even in the underground, yet his eyes were darker than midnight. Tomlinson moved with authority and purpose evident in each step. This man looked so damn comfortable it was as if he owned the world.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

He stepped up beside the boss and held out his hand. "My name is Ulrick Brant. I'm sorry for your loss."

She glanced down at her filthy hand, then crossed her arms over her breasts. Tears blurred her vision and burned her throat. Why was this stranger the only one who realized she was in pain? No one else seemed to care that the only person in this godforsaken place who ever gave a damn about her lay lifeless -- because of her!

The stranger shrugged out of his fancy coat and knelt beside her. "Is the blood on your chest his, or are you hurt as well?" He placed the coat around her shoulders and eased Grizzly farther down her legs.

"I ain't hurt, thanks to Grizzly." As soon as she let go, he rolled Grizzly's body to the side and helped her to her feet. She quickly slipped her arms into the sleeves and buttoned a few of the buttons, then gathered the long coat around her trembling legs. "Thank you."

"You're welcome."

She dragged her gaze away from his handsome face and looked back at Grizzly. He lay on his side now, all peaceful, like he was sleeping.

"Get her cleaned up so we can see if she's worth fighting for."

She didn't know who said it, but it snapped her head back around. "I belong to Griz! I'm Grizzly Winters' Cub!"

"Griz is dead, Cub," King reminded her. As if she could forget. "You know the rules. Women must be claimed. There are no exceptions."

"How old is she?" Tomlinson asked. "She might not be ready for breeding."

"She's more than ready." That hot, hungry look came back into King's eyes. "Don't let her innocent expression fool you. Naked bodies don't lie."

The stranger wrapped his fingers around her upper arm and drew her toward him. "Chet, she's perfect for my investigation. I'll return her in a day or so."

"Wait a goddamn minute! Who the fuck are you?" King took a menacing step forward.

Tomlinson blocked King's path. "Mr. Brant is the Civilian Head of the Protectorate. He can interview anyone he likes for as long as he likes. Step aside."

To Cub's astonishment King did exactly that. She took two steps forward before her numbed brain reengaged. "Wait! What about Griz?"

"I'll see that he is sent off with all the honor he deserves."

On any other day she wouldn't have believed anything Tomlinson said, but he was obviously afraid of the stranger. And the stranger had taken an interest in her.

In a muddled stupor, she followed the stranger across the common room and down the corridor leading to the elevators. Ulrick. He'd said his name was Ulrick Brant. She looked up at him and shivered. Even in profile he looked amazing, attractive, interesting, and dangerous. What did the Civilian Head of the Protectorate want with someone like her?

"Where are you taking me?" It was foolish to care, but she couldn't silence the question.

"Away from here." His tone was low and amused. "Do you really care where we go?" He echoed her thought as he slid the safety gate open and motioned her inside.

She hesitated. "It depends what you expect from me in return."

"Then stay here and take your chances with them."

Annoyance rolled up her spine. "You don't have to threaten me. I'm just trying to understand what you want."

"I want to talk to you. I want to see who's living under all that dirt. Beyond that, I honestly don't know." He moved into the elevator and grabbed the safety gate. "In or out. It's up to you."

Naked except for a black lace thong, Autumn knelt on a mirror-topped table with her wrists bound in leather cuffs and suspended above her head. A blood red scarf had been slipped between her teeth, crossed at the back of her head, and then tied to cover her mouth completely. She stared straight ahead, focusing past the leering stares and lust-hardened expressions of the soldiers crowded into the briefing room. None of these men were allowed to touch her. She was a whipping girl, part of the entertainment, yet not available for sexual interaction.
"Isn't she beautiful, gentlemen?" Rebecca purred. The short, braided strands of her velvet whip whooshed as she brought it down in a dramatic arc, barely missing her thigh. "Her skin is perfect and so white. It's almost a shame to mark her." She laughed, the sound light and playful. "Almost."
Even knowing the blow was coming didn't prepare Autumn for the sting. Rebecca slapped the strands against Autumn's tight belly and she inhaled, clenching her teeth against the gag. Bright red marks lined her fair skin as heat spread through her abdomen, collecting between her thighs. Training to become a pleasure ambassador had been intensive and long. Autumn had discovered many unexpected facts about her body. One of the most surprising had been her affinity to pain.
"It's all so sad for poor Autumn," Rebecca went on. "I do anything I want, I misbehave constantly, and she receives my punishment." She whipped one of Autumn's breasts and then the other, spreading the heat and anticipation. The older woman's control kept the strokes sharp enough to draw blood to the surface without breaking the skin.
Autumn's nipples peaked as her body processed the stimulation. Rebecca grabbed the edge of the wheeled table and carefully turned it around. The cables securing Autumn's arms twisted, drawing them even higher.
"And look at this ass." Rebecca squeezed one cheek, her long nails dragging across the smooth skin as she pulled her hand away. "Have you ever seen an ass more in need of spanking?" She slapped Autumn hard with her open hand and waited for her skin to react. "A perfect handprint. Very good, Autumn. You're the best whipping girl I've ever had."
Muffled chuckles peppered the room, but Autumn tuned out her surroundings. A large mirror had been set up near the wall allowing the men to see her front while Rebecca worked on her back. Rebecca spanked her other cheek, making it appear as if bloody hands had squeezed her ass. It was all orchestrated, a practiced routine they had perfected in training.
Rebecca ran the whip handle up the inside of Autumn's thigh and rubbed it against the scrap of lace covering her folds. "She's wet, boys. Shall I see if I can make her come?"
"I can make her come," one of the soldiers bragged. "Let me touch her, and she'll be dripping in a minute or less."
Rebecca's laugh was low and sensual this time. "She's dripping now." She slipped her fingers inside Autumn's panties and gathered some cream. "See?"
"Rip off the thong," someone else suggested. "Let her juices pool on top of the table."
Staring into the mirror, Autumn tried to catch Rebecca's gaze. They weren't supposed to deviate from the routine. It was designed to excite while keeping Autumn objectified, unattainable.
"Sorry, boys. The thong's there to remind you that she's not cleared for fucking."
Autumn's relieved sigh was premature. Rebecca swung the whip with punishing force, blanketing the small of her back with needling pain. Autumn gasped and arched, but the next lash was even harder. The whip was made of velvet, for God's sake! How was Rebecca making it hurt so badly?
Unlike the teasing strokes Rebecca had delivered to her breasts, these lashes seared and burned. Autumn twisted, writhing helplessly, her screams muffled by the gag. Tears blurred her vision then anger flared through her shock.
She demanded that Rebecca stop, but her words were garbled by the material between her teeth. Why was Rebecca doing this? They were supposed to be a team!
The whip connected again and again, the surrounding noise escalating with each swing. Cheers and whistles, and the occasional gasp as blood trailed down Autumn's back. Shame crept through her anger. Did they believe she deserved this pain? Why was no one questioning Rebecca's viciousness?
"She's had enough." A deep voice cut through the others and the next lash never came.
Autumn shifted her weight and fire rolled from her shoulders to the bend of her knees. Tears escaped the corners of her eyes, and she moaned.
"Poor, precious Autumn," Rebecca whispered bitterly. "Are you still too good to fuck?" She threw the whip onto the tabletop and stepped away. "Come on, boys. That always makes me horny. Who wants to go first?"
Three of the soldiers rushed forward. Autumn watched them in the mirror through a haze of pain. One of the men reached for the whip, but Rebecca stopped him. "No one touches her but me."
Autumn whimpered at the belated mercy. He stepped back, but remained near the table, staring up at Autumn as he rubbed the bulge in the front of his pants.
There were five pleasure ambassadors scattered about the room, but there were eleven men. Autumn grasped the cables connected to her wrist cuffs, suddenly wishing she were not bound. Even with two embassy guards overseeing the action, they were outnumbered.
The trainers had assured Autumn abuse was not tolerated. The embassies were the only game in town, so no one in the Protectorate wanted to be blacklisted.
The Protectorate. Autumn shuddered. They were the occupying army, the henchmen for the mysterious Gathosians who now controlled Earth. In a few short months the Protectorate had reduced Earth to a subjugated mining colony. They struck North America first, subduing the "superpower" as an example to the rest of the world.
The first designer virus targeted those not strong enough to work. The second wiped out most of the female population. The third killed anyone who had not yet gone through puberty. The Gathosians wanted their workforce unencumbered by sentimental distractions, and they weren't interested in longevity. Once the oceans had been stripped of their salt, the Gathosians would move on to another planet.
The women and children unlucky enough to survive the pandemic were rounded up and taken to training camps, while the devastated men were forced to deal with the bodies. Hundreds of millions of bodies.
Allowing her physical pain to burn through the memories, Autumn returned to the present and her heart sank to the pit of her stomach. This situation wasn't much better than the devastation she'd been remembering.
Laborer or whore. Those were the choices left for human females. Or breeder, the most degrading choice of all. Even if she'd chosen to subject herself to the back-breaking work and toxic environment of the sodium refineries, she would have been fighting off the unwanted advances of her coworkers. Rape had become so common it was no longer considered a crime. Females were so rare it was unthinkable to go anywhere without protection. The human concept of morality had been eroded by this new reality.
Rebecca's rhythmic cries drew Autumn's attention to her tormentor. The first soldier had bent her over the conference table and was fucking her from behind. Autumn could see everything clearly in the mirror. Rebecca braced herself on her forearms so the second man could play with her breasts while he waited for his turn to fuck her. The first soldier grasped her hips and slammed into her fast and hard, focused entirely on his pleasure.
Autumn gritted her teeth and looked away from Rebecca, but everywhere she looked it was more of the same. She had no idea why the "fuck-fest" had been arranged for these soldiers. Had they performed unusually well, or had they simply been in the field for an unusually long period of time? The briefing room wasn't large, so no one bothered with modesty. Cocks were sucked and ambassadors fucked in every conceivable position.
And Autumn found it all repulsive.
Was this really her fate? Not every party requested a whipping girl, so eventually she would have to allow members of the Protectorate access to her body. Her blood ran cold at the thought. Could she really shut down her mind and become a passive vessel for the monsters that had ravaged her world?
Soldier One came with a shuddering moan and immediately pulled out of Rebecca's pussy. His buddy took his place before Rebecca had a chance to straighten her back.
"She's so fucking slippery," Soldier Two complained. "I can hardly feel her cunt."
"So smear my cum on your cock and use her ass," Soldier One advised.
Rebecca adjusted her stance, giving Soldier Two a better angle as he pulled out of her pussy and penetrated her ass.
Autumn closed her eyes, tension knotting her stomach. It was all so mechanical, so impersonal, so... meaningless. How did the ambassadors stand it night after night?
"You've never done it. Have you?" Soldier Three faced her again, dark eyes gleaming with desire. "You're always the whipping girl. No one ever gets to fuck you."
She glared at him, saved from replying by the gag covering her mouth.
"She's new," Rebecca panted. "And she's the trainer's pet. Whatever Autumn wants, Autumn gets."
Soldier Two pulled Rebecca away from the table and urged her to her knees. "Come on, Bret. You can have her mouth."
Bret's dark gaze swept over Autumn with obvious longing then he skirted the table and joined his friends. Rebecca raised her head and parted her lips, taking Bret's engorged cock into her mouth. They passed her back and forth, one cock driving inward as the other pulled back.
The double doors on the far side of the room burst open and a red-faced soldier shouted, "Get them out of here! Noirte just set down!"
The men righted their uniforms as the ambassadors frantically gathered discarded clothing. Autumn yanked on the cuffs and cried out behind the gag, trying to draw anyone's attention.
Rebecca looked at her and smiled, a cruel bowing of her painted lips, and then she ran for the nearest exit.

Blurb:

After a lifetime of trading passion for ambition, Doctor Emily Hillard is determined to catch a killer. Instead of being awed by her technology, the morphs pair her with the most exasperating man she has ever encountered. He's barbaric, domineering, and apologetically savage. She should be frightened, or at least repelled by his lack of sophistication. Instead, she finds him refreshing, and pictures herself crushed beneath his strong body as he skillfully peels away her civility.
Cruz, a panther-shifter with pyrokinetic abilities, spent eleven years as an assassin before being allowed a reprieve. He is finally enjoying some down time when a murderous rogue chooses his territory for a hideout. Now half of Alpha Colony is searching for the rogue, and Cruz's handlers are desperate to get their hands on Emily's prototype. Ordinarily Cruz would have ignored their threats and ultimatums, but he's intrigued by the delectable doctor. So, he decides to show the hothouse flower what life in the wild is all about.

Sharp claws pricked Emily Hillard's throat while a massive hand immobilized her against the rough-hewn wall surrounding the feline village. Maddox, the leader of Barbary pride, loomed over her, silent, majestic, and lethal. Only his hand touched her as he stared into her eyes. Nothing more was needed to control an unarmed human.
She hadn't expected a hero's welcome. But she'd been dragged out of her vehicle by brutish guards and shoved against the wall before she had a chance to explain who she was or why she'd come to Alpha Colony. A small crowd had gathered by the time Maddox arrived, and her treatment at his hands had been even less welcoming. The morphs had no reason to trust humans. She understood their hostility. Even so, she had expected some level of civility.
Taking a careful breath, she tried to regain her composure without increasing the sting of the lion-shifter's claws. "Milo sent me." She maneuvered the words beyond her dry lips, amazed that she could speak at all. Would that mean anything to him? Maddox was organizing the cat clans in support of the building rebellion, but she wasn't sure how much he knew about the external efforts.
One of Maddox's tawny brows arched, and he relaxed enough to sheath his claws. His hand slipped to the base of her throat as his face descended. She knew enough about morphs to understand what he was doing. He sniffed her hair, inhaled her breath, and gradually moved lower. The examination was humiliatingly thorough, yet in no way intimate.
"You reek of dogs."
"I just came from their camp." Her voice regained a bit of its strength. Apparently, he'd decided not to rip out her throat. That was something. "I needed --"
He caught her jaw again, snapping her head back so fast she bumped the rustic perimeter wall. "The only thing I need from those curs is the safe return of my sister!"
"Maddox, their scent is on her clothing, not her body." The throaty, female voice came from somewhere behind Maddox, but Emily couldn't see around his broad chest. "Are you calm enough to process the distinction?"
Emily didn't detect playfulness in the female's words, but Maddox smiled and moved his hand to the wall. His gaze lingered on Emily's face for a moment longer; then he angled his body toward the other woman. "I'm always calm. I was hoping to detect Jizette's scent, but all I can smell is dog."
The blonde shrugged as she ambled closer. "Perhaps we should remove her clothes. Then we can determine if she's been near Jizette or not."
"I have," Emily immediately volunteered.
The blonde chuckled. "Humans are so easy."
"But it's not what you think. I'm not working for Timberline pack. I have important information, if you'll let me explain."
The female stood beside Maddox, confident and comfortable. Golden hair flowed to her waist and framed a face both angular and graceful. "I'm Dyauna." She held out her hand toward Emily. "Maddox is my mate." Her simple, filmy garment did little to conceal her supple curves. The two made a stunning couple.
Maddox smiled at his mate's possessive phrasing and pushed off the wall. "You're usually the one ready to bust heads first and ask questions later. Is mated life taming you?"
"In your dreams." Dyauna motioned toward Emily's vehicle. "What is that thing? I've never seen anything like it."
Emily glanced at the guards and other onlookers. Her arrival had caused quite a stir. "Much of what I need to explain is highly confidential. Is there somewhere we can go to talk?"
"Do you know where Jizette is, or not?" Maddox faced Emily again, all playfulness gone from his demeanor.
"I do, and she's unharmed. The rest is complicated."
"There's nothing complicated about releasing a hostage." His nostrils flared, and Dyauna placed her hand on his forearm. "All the dogs need to do is let her go."
Dyauna gave his arm a meaningful squeeze. "This really would be better without an audience."
He heaved a sigh and called out to the guards, telling them to open the gate. "Bring that contraption inside. We'll talk in the workshop."
Emily wasn't sure where the workshop was, but Maddox and Dyauna guided her inside the feline village. Watching the gates close behind her felt oddly prophetic. This wasn't her first field mission, not even her first time at Alpha Colony, so why did she feel so jittery?
