Speed Demon And A Love Worth Waiting For – Cynthia Sax

Tomorrow, Speed Demon releases. Speed Demon is the fourth story I’ve written for the sexy multi-author Protect and Serve series. Officer Drake found his Hunny bunny in Badge Bunny

Drake’s partner Officer Wright met the right woman/beagle in Legal Beagle

Uncle Flopsy… well… he extended an offer Lady Grace couldn’t refuse in The Godrabbit.

In Speed Demon, their good friend and fellow police officer Sarge will finally act on the love he’s been harboring for his partner Nero. It has taken a long time for Sarge to come to terms with his feelings. It takes a tragedy to prompt him to act on them.

For me, this wait, this heart-wrenching effort, makes Sarge’s story even more special. He is risking everything on love. He’s risking the job he loves, the friends he’d die for, the partner he trusts to guard his back. He has to face the demons in his past and the big, bad demon in his present and maybe his future.

This is why I love this story.

My name is Officer Sargent, Sarge to friends and fellow police officers. You might have heard some rumors about me, but they're all lies. I'm not gay. I'm not. The reason I watch my partner's back is because that's what cops do; we watch out for each other. It has nothing to do with his broad shoulders or trim hips or shapely butt.

My partner Nero is a demon, and he has a sick sense of humor, tricking me into thinking things no straight man should ever think. I'm a genetically enhanced supercop, and I can handle his devilish magic.

That is until the unthinkable happens.

I stalked across the bar and hauled myself up onto one of the few empty barstools. It looked like the entire neighborhood had decided to drown their sorrows at the same time. At least that meant there was a good selection of men available. Good thing, because right now I was feeling hornier than a werewolf during the full moon, and pissed enough not to be too picky about whom I chose to spend the night with. Talks with my self-appointed guardian Tyrone always had this effect on me. Make that monologues. I don't think I'd managed to get in more than two words during the entire fiasco.
I waved my hand to catch Sam's attention, and motioned him to bring me a drink. Sam had been bartending at Joe's Bar long enough to know what I wanted. I swiveled the chair and surveyed the room, considering my options. The three guys at the pool table weren't bad looking, and there were a few likely candidates at a table in the far corner, but they all looked just a tad too civilized for my taste tonight. I was in the mood for something wild.
A gust of wind drew my attention to the door. The man who entered sent heat curling deep in my gut. Civilized was the last word that came to mind. Hard. Wild. Uncivilized. Yeah, those described him to a T.
A riot of dark hair curled all the way to the blue uniform stretched tight across his huge shoulders. He reminded me of the football players at the inner city stadiums, wide and covered with thick ropes of muscle. A tingle of anticipation raced through me. His dark eyes swept the room with cynical disinterest as he shouldered his way through the noisy crowd, and I found myself holding my breath as I waited for him to notice me.
"He's trouble, Tundra. Don't even think about it." Sam slapped the beer down in front of me, breaking the spell.
"You know him?" I ignored the bartender's frown. I was way past needing someone to vet my dates. "I don't remember seeing him in here before."
Sam nodded. "Alex is a loner, a beat cop down at the precinct. He doesn't come in here often. Last time he did, it took me two days to clean up the mess." He leaned forward, lowering his voice so I had to strain to hear his words. "I heard a rumor that there's a troll somewhere in his family tree, and I'm inclined to believe it."
"Really." I swept my tongue across my suddenly dry lips as I watched the slide of tight material over his ass. "That could make things very... interesting." Sam snorted and shook his head as I took a long pull on my drink. "That's one word for it. Don't say I didn't warn you!"
I laughed, throwing him a saucy grin as I slid off the barstool. "Warning duly noted. Wish me luck!" Turning my back on his disapproving frown, I wound my way through the dense crowd toward my target.
He'd taken a seat at a small table and was watching the trio at the pool table mangle a simple game of spots and stripes. One of the scantily clad waitresses swooped in to deposit a drink in front of him, bending forward so far that I fully expected her ample bosoms to fall out of the low-cut bodice of her dress. She had better not be under the impression that she stood a chance with him, because I was more than willing to get into a fight tonight. A little pre-coitus bloodshed would be just a bonus.
The man tossed some credits at her, and she flounced away to take orders from another table. I found myself feeling mildly disappointed. I hadn't been in a good fight in at least two moons. Wouldn't hurt to get in a little practice.
Reaching my destination, I pulled out the other chair at the table and sat down beside my target. I took my time assessing him close up, letting my gaze wander from the tips of his serviceable boots and up his muscular legs to the impressive bulge at his groin. Looked like I wouldn't have to work too hard to get what I wanted.
I took another gulp of my beer and considered the vast expanse of his chest, barely covered by the tight uniform. A unicorn tattoo on his biceps seemed incongruous with the rough attitude, and being my usual tactful self, I decided not to mention it.
Yeah, right. Me? Tactful? "So what's with the prissy little horse?" I nodded at the tattoo. "Lose a bet or something?"
I found myself staring into the darkest eyes I'd ever encountered; pools of liquid heat. For a moment, I thought I'd blown my chance of playing ride-em cowboy with him, but then the corners of his eyes crinkled and he let out a bellow of real, straight-from-the-gut laughter. It made him look even hotter, which I hadn't thought possible. My libido kicked into high gear, and I could feel the liquid heat gathering at the apex of my thighs. Idly, I wondered if he'd go for the direct approach and save us both some time. I decided not to risk it.
"The prissy little horse has a certain sentimental value that I only share with close friends." The man's eyes swept over me with obvious interest. "Do I know you?"
I decided to play it cool and mysterious. Who knows? It worked on those old video flicks they showed on public TV. "Not yet, but the night is young." Okay, that just sounded stupid. I smiled in what I hoped was a seductive manner. "My name is Tundra."
A slow, sexy smile turned his face into an open invitation -- one I had every intention of accepting. When he spoke, his voice had the smooth, deep inflection of a very old bottle of expensive whiskey. "That's a very unusual name. Nice to meet you, Tundra."
He held his hand out and I stared at it like an idiot. He wanted to shake hands? Not exactly what I'd envisioned, but hey, it was a start. I took his hand and shook it. It was big. Real big. Heat crawled up my spine as I imagined it caressing my breasts. Or sliding across my naked ass. "Nice to meet you too..." I arched my eyebrow as it occurred to me I had no idea what his name was.
The smile widened. "Alex. But most people just call me Big Blue."
I took a long drink, letting the silence stretch out. "Big Blue. How interesting. Referring to your uniform, I assume?"
He chuckled. "Well, that would be the Blue part."
"And the Big?" It took all my self-control to keep my gaze from straying to that thick bulge at his groin.
He kept eye contact, the grin on his face taking on a mischievous look as he reached for my hand and drew it slowly toward his lap. He didn't say anything else. He didn't have to. Under my questing fingers, that huge lump grew even bigger. Big Blue indeed! "Oh my."

Blurb:
When cat shifter Petra (aka Pete) becomes the victim of "friendly fire" during the apprehension of a bank robber, panther shifter cop Apollo Jones feels obligated to make sure she's okay. Pete's positive she doesn't need another hero in her life, and Apollo's out to prove her wrong.

Excerpt:
 Name: Lt. Apollo Jones
Timestamp: 1934
Incident Date: August 17, 2027
Incident time logged as 0837
I finished my boiled eggs and tucked my lunch bag under the seat. It was my turn to drive, and I didn’t want the straps tangling in my feet if I had to get out in a hurry. “Jeff, if you don’t quit eating like that, you’re gonna be in the fat boy program on the force.”
Jeff Petoskey patted his slightly rounded belly and grinned sheepishly. “Ya think, Jonesy? Married life is making me soft.” He polished his new wedding band. He’d just come back from his honeymoon, and his uniform still fit a bit more snugly than usual. I’d given him the usual razzing about married life making him slow and fat that morning already, but he’s a good cop. He’d be back in shape in a day or two.
The Motorola radio squawked. Bank robbery in progress at the Bank and Trust just up the road from where we sat. Jeff and I glanced at each other. Something in my heart and mind said this was going to be ugly. Call it instinct. I didn’t have another word for it, and I still don’t.
Jeff slapped his collar mike. “546, we’re on it.” He threw the remains of his lunch into the bag and burped. “Let’s roll!”
I flipped on the lights and siren and hit the accelerator. Lunch break was over, and the old parking lot we’d been using as a stop was emptier than the dreams of the former owners.
I wove easily in and out of what little traffic still used the city streets. Out there in suburbia, it wasn’t so bad, but the inner city was quite literally turning into an urban jungle full of predators, who were slowly expanding out into the outer limits. Pretty soon, even our relatively quiet precinct would suffer the same fate and become abandoned by the law.
I personally think we should just wall in the inner city and hit it with a bomb. Any of the few remaining good citizens still living there would either have to take warning and flee or suffer the consequences. Either that, or it’s going to take superheroes, and I stopped believing in that kind of bullshit when I stopped reading comic books.
We drove into chaos. The radio went nuts trying to keep up with the calls, but the main points were clear. A lone robber, dressed in medieval armor, of all things, had managed to get out of the bank and was on the move.
A man in a businessman’s jumpsuit flagged us down from the left. He waved frantically toward a fast food joint. “Some sonovabitch in chain mail shot my car! He went that way!”
“Fuck me running!” Jeff called it in that the perp had been spotted heading into the Mickey-D’s on Beach and Kernan. Shit, on a Saturday morning, the place was likely packed with people stocking up on their carbs before heading to the beach.
I just cursed and hit the gas, ran over the curb, knocked down some old sago palms decorating the median between the businesses, and arrived first.
The place was crazy. People burst out of the doors in front of us, screaming and heading for the protection of their own vehicles or anywhere else they could. Most of them made it out of the parking lot at lightning speed.
In the confusion, three more police vehicles arrived, blocking off the exits. The design of the fast food joint’s landscape hemmed in all escapes with a fenced kiddy playground, streetlight poles, and a copse of large, decorative trees. The heat wasn’t so bad, but the trees still provided a barrier, if not shade. The perp was trapped.
Jeff opened his door and used the thing for a shield seconds before I jammed the car into park and did the same. Jeff barked into his collar mike, “Where is he? How hard can it be to find a guy in armor?”
“He’s in the gray Mercedes in the drive though! Window tinting makes it hard to see if he’s got hostages!” Was that Lt. Anders? Someone check his voice recording. Anyway, I thought it was Anders.
“I got a bead on him from the side!” I didn’t catch the names on the speakers. It’ll be recorded.
“I can’t see anyone in the passenger seat, nor in the back! I think they ran with the rest of the customers!”
Gunfire rang out. I’m fairly sure our dashcams and throat mikes caught the sound.
“Shit! He’s firing.” That was Cussler, I’m sure of it. He’s got a mouth like a trucker.
“Shots fired! Shots fired! Officer down!” Darcy. I think. She was Ander’s partner that day. Guess that was when Anders got his bullet.
“I see him!” Jeff fired once, but all he did was hit the windshield. The old glass spider-webbed, making it more difficult to see if anyone at all, even the perp, was in the car.
I shouted to my partner. “If you can see him, he can see you!”
Too late. A red-and-silver arm appeared out the window and fired.
Jeff cried out, and his face was covered in blood. He fell backward, out of sight. Over the sirens and gunfire, I couldn’t hear anything, but I remember I reported into my collar mike anyway. “Officer down! Repeat, officer down. 546!”
To say adrenaline raced through me was an understatement. Time slowed down, and I narrowed my focus. Two officers out of our dwindling force was bad enough. Blue took care of their own. I was pissed beyond belief. Jeff was a fucking newlywed who didn’t deserve to die.
Apparently, my fellow officers felt the same. The Mercedes became a target, then Swiss cheese. The windshield shattered, and the bank robber/cop-killer died in a barrage of hot lead.
One by one, the guns stopped firing.
In the silence that followed, I heard the worst sound in the world, and the one we all dreaded, coming from inside the Mercedes -- a child screaming for her mommy.

01 Seth's Blog
I'm Seth Morrison. I'm a cop, a police lieutenant to be precise. I've been on the force more years than I want to think about. I've seen good men get killed, turn dirty, lose themselves in the bottle, lose their fucking minds, but I'm still here doing what I do. I don't know any other life. People tell me I need a break, a vacation, to relax. I don't want to fucking relax. I just want to do my job and keep this city from falling apart.
I park my car, grab my coffee from the cup holder, and charge up the front steps of the station. I could take the side door, it's closer to my office, but I love the chaos of the bullpen. When I open the door, I breathe deeply, enjoying the variety of smells: coffee that's been on the warmer far too long, the sickeningly sweet smell of candy and doughnuts, pine-scented cleaner from the scrubbing the janitors gave the floors last night, and something unnamable that simply smells like cops and hard work. I shake my head as I try to imagine not being here nearly 24/7. This is where I belong.
My stomach rumbles. I should've had dinner, but after pretending an afternoon nap was a night's sleep, I'm running late. I'll grab something from the vending machine while I dream about a juicy burger and thick home fries. It sure would be nice to have someone cook for me. I don't seem to get along with stoves. Years ago, I tried being married. That worked for about 30 seconds. My wife wanted me to work shorter hours. I wanted her to talk less, or maybe never.
Friends tell me I should make an effort to date, but I'm more comfortable at a gruesome homicide scene than making small talk at dinner with a woman or a man. Yeah, I like both. I stopped going out with men when I entered the academy. I just couldn't deal with the shit the guys would give me. Now, I don't advertise what I like, but I pick up a guy now and then. I'm discreet, but if somebody finds out, I'll deal.
One-night stands I can handle, but relationships are beyond me. People think police work is draining, but I'd rather spend all day in the field and all night at my desk filling out fucking paperwork -- and often I do -- than try to decode relationship signals. I inevitably screw things up and never understand why.
Sex I need. Romance I don't.
My phone rings. I pull it out of my pocket hoping the call will save me from the mountain of paperwork on my desk. It's Drew Danvers, detective and vampire. That's right, a vampire who works for the good guys. We've got a werewolf in homicide too. And he's a damn fine cop.
I remember when the shifters came out of the closet, scaring the hell out of us humans. One by one other monsters made themselves known. Most people assumed they were all assholes who wanted to eat us, but I quickly learned not to judge a man because he sucked blood or turned into a wolf. I judge men based on how they treat others.
I answer the call. "What's up, Detective?"
"Two dead werewolves found in a closet at Shift. Hacked up pretty bad. The scene's a circus. Jenkins called in sick. I'm on my own, and --"
"I'll be there in ten."
"Thanks, sir."
"No problem. Murder scene or paperwork, which would you choose?"
* * *
I step inside the club. A crime lab team is there and several uniformed officers are talking with employees. I spot Drew in the entryway of an office. He's frowning as he questions a tall hairy hunk of a man. I've seen this man around the area several times, and just like every other time, he makes my cock sit up and take notice.
Our most recent encounter was a week ago. When I want to grab a beer and be left the fuck alone, I go to Mitch's, a dive just down the street from Shift. Last time I spent the evening there, he sat next to me at the bar and came on strong. I was in a shitty mood. I wanted him, and it pissed me off. He's not my type. He's young, hip, and outrageously flirtatious. I walked away, but I regretted it later that night when I couldn't stop fantasizing about him.
The man looks my way and catches me staring. His grin says he knows the direction my thoughts are going. Fucking bastard winks at me. Drew scowls.
I turn to face him. He grins down at me, that same cocky-as-fuck little smile he'd given me earlier, making me even more aware of how close we are and how big he is. At 6'2", I'm hardly small, but he's got several inches on me. And while I've got a rather thick pelt, the fur visible above the vee of his t-shirt is astounding.
He smiles mischievously. "You gonna cuff me if you take me in?"
"Impeding a murder investigation will get you thrown in jail."
He rolls his eyes. "I found two dead guys in my closet when I came to work tonight. My business is shut down, and I'll be losing money every minute that you're here. But at least I have a sense of humor."
"Well, I don't."
He shakes his head. "Are you taken too?"
I take another step back. "You're making a lot of assumptions."
I look over at Drew and realize he and Jason are grinning like loons. Fuck. All I need is the two of them ragging me.
I glare at Drew. "Detective, do you think you can question this man without killing him?"
"Probably."
"Fine. Fleetfoot, head back to the lab. Take my car. I'll get a ride with Danvers." I throw him my keys, and he snatches them out of the air as he gives Drew's hand a final squeeze. Jason is better in the lab than any tech we have. We only send him into the field when we're desperately short-handed. I run a hand through my hair, wishing I knew how I'm going to hold the homicide division together if we don't get more funds.
He holds out his hand. "I'm Brandon Lord. I own Shift."
"Lieutenant Morrison." I shake his hand. His skin is surprisingly smooth, his grip tight and warm. I want to feel those big hands running over me. I want to rub his furry body with my own. Fuck! I should assign someone else to this case right now and get the hell away from him. But some crazy restlessness he's dredged up in me makes me fight my instincts.
"Nice to meet you, Lieutenant." His voice is low and rich. And his grin lets me know he's well aware of my body's reaction to him.
I need to get away. His smell alone is making me hard. "I'm not here to play games. Drop the act and treat this case seriously, or I'll find an excuse to throw your ass in jail."
He grins. Fuck, he knows he's got me rattled. "I'd never kill anyone, Lieutenant. I'm just a cuddly teddy bear."
The bear shifter and the bear. Ridiculous. I need to leave now. This man is no cuddly toy. I don't think he's our murderer, but he's far smarter than he wants me to believe and likely far more dangerous. "I know what cuddling leads to."
Brandon laughs, a deep, infectious sound. I can't help but respond. Now I want him more than ever. Taking this case is a supremely stupid idea, staying on it now is unprofessional.
But I won't walk away.

My name is Officer Wright. I'm genetically enhanced as one of the city's finest, and a normal day for me involves plugging liquid sunshine into rogue vamps, tagging and bagging renegade werewolves, and putting the fear of the badge into all criminals.
But these are not normal days. While my partner takes a leave of absence to bang his bunny, I'm stuck on babysitting duty. Yeah, stop laughing. It would be more humorous except the chick I'm tailing is a hot little beagle-shifting judge, and when she takes the bench, believe me, my whole body comes to order.

01 Sadie's Blog
I smell him as soon as he enters the stairwell -- the sharp suffocating smell of malice filling the space. It is one of Poe's vamp goons; it has to be, sent to influence my decision. He'll try to scare me with threats, tempt me with offers of riches and --
And a ball? Does he have a ball? A ball? Does he have one?
Quiet. I hush my excitable inner beagle as I hurry down the stairs, my heels ringing on the cement steps. Poe won't influence me, not even with a room full of bouncing balls.
Ball!
Quiet. I didn't earn my place as a high court judge by taking bribes, bending to intimidation, or listening to the animal I share a body with. I snagged the dangerous black robes because I can sniff out the truth.
I may have sniffed up my last ass this time though. The cracking of knuckles echoes, as loud as gunshots. This goon, unlike the slick talker sent before him, plans to influence with his fists.
I may not be a supermodel, but I do like my face arranged the way it is, thank you very much, so I increase my pace, wishing I had changed into my running shoes. Goons should really schedule appointments days in advance, ensuring that I dress appropriately.
The man is gaining on me, his heavy tread attesting to his size. I glance back, spotting a broad, ugly face peering down at me. He's not the usual tall, thin, anemic-looking vampire. This guy must drain a cheerleading squad every night.
He won't drain this former cheerleader. I burst through the doors to the parking level. Of course, the doughnut-eating toy-cop isn't at his station by the stairwell. The police chief had been right about court security. It is regrettably lax.
Run! I love to run! Run!
I take my inner beagle's advice, and double-time it toward my vehicle -- a sweet little convertible with a shiny chrome bumper that the press calls inappropriate for a judge to drive. I don't care. I risk my life every day, putting the worst criminals in the city behind bars. I'll drive what I like.
The stairwell door slams shut behind the goon. He's not even attempting to be stealthy, and he's cut the distance between us in two. I really have to work out more.
I run, moving between the parked cars. The goon runs behind me, huffing and puffing like a two pack a day smoker. For a smoker, he's fast though, and I know he'll catch me before I reach my car. I have no choice left but to shift as I run -- discarding my clothes and designer tote on the cement parking level floor. My body shrinks in size, my arms elongating, a tail protruding from my ass, my chin stretching into a muzzle.
Play! Let's play! Play!
Dodging the huge vamp becomes a game. He lunges toward me, and I run between his massive legs, nipping him in the privates as I pass. He roars, clutching his man bits, his pale face twisting in rage. I bark, romp around in a circle, and bark some more. This is fun. My human side doesn't allow me out very often.
A delectable aroma fills my finely-tuned snout. Mate! Mate! Mate! I yip with joy, my tongue rolling out of my mouth. I run toward the scent, my little legs working as fast as they can, with my tail wagging. I must find my mate.
The goon chases me. "Come here, you fucking dog," he orders.
I'm a good dog so I obey. As I approach, he places a hand over his groin, as he's scared of me, and he should be. I'm a wild animal, and he doesn't know how I'll react. I release a haunting baying sound.
Done with the dramatics, I pelt at him at top speed, my ears flopping, and at the last minute, I slide under a big maintenance truck. He reaches out to grab me. Whack. His thick skull connects with the metal door.
I bark at him from my position under the vehicle. When his homely face comes into view, I run around him, and bite him on the ass. He roars again, hollering something about not being trained for this, and knowing when to give up.
I turn my head, distracted, the scent of my mate growing stronger. Mate! Mate! Mate! Euphoria floods my body as I run. I spot big boots, my mate's boots. I will chew on them later, marking him so all the other dogs know who he belongs to. Right now, I bark my possession. Mine! I jump into the air.
Big hands scoop me up. "Hey there, puppy." He lifts me so we're face to face, his warm human nose brushing against my cold snout.
I recognize the blue eyes brimming with humor. Not mate. Officer Wright. Bad dog. My human is not pleased with me.
I cower for one long heartbeat, but my enthusiasm can't be dimmed. Friend! Friend! Friend! I lick the officer's handsome face all over, thrilled and excited and thrilled. He tastes of salty human mate.
Mate!

Maggie. Drop dead gorgeous brunette. Retro-blues singer, Maggie is, and a damn fine one, at that. Maggie's all class. Too classy for Nashville. Far too classy for the likes of me.

Me, I'm a cop with a real nose for crime -- I'm also a werewolf. Now I'm undercover, chasing a serial killer, a bloodsucking bastard of a rogue vampire. And he's close. So close I can almost smell him. I have to be here, have to stop him before he kills again.
Before he takes the bait. Before he kills Maggie...

Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel...

"Hey, Springsteen, this is my corner. Go find your own real estate."
There was no one else around, so I stopped singing long enough to give the prosti my best who-the-fuck-do-you-think-you-are once over. "Cohn."
"What?"
"Cohn. Marc Cohn. Springsteen's version's a lot more bluesy." She should have recognized the difference, if she'd known shit about music. "Looks like your ride's here."
A shiny stretch pickup, circa half a century or so ago, rumbled to a halt at the curb, obscuring my view of the rest of the street, but effectively ending the tug-of-war over territory.
The prosti pulled on her working face and leaned into the cowboy limo. "Hey, there, big boy. What's a hunk like you doing out here all alone on a nasty night like this?" He said something and she laughed. "Let's go back to your place. I can think of ways to warm us both up."
She looked forty, despite her enhancements. My guess? Closer to sixty. If I'd been in uniform I'd have checked her license and found some reason to run her in. As it was, I dropped her off my radar, mentally. Not young enough. Not pretty enough.
I went back to Walking in Memphis, picking up where I'd left off. I'll admit, I'm not going to be the next great retro singer to go viral on the net, but I can croon a tune well enough to pass for a Nashville wannabe without getting made.
Yeah. I'm a cop. Protect and Serve, and all. So why am I standing on the corner of Commerce and Second, across the street from B.B. King's Blues Club and just down from the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville, Tennessee?
A woman, naturally. And not just any woman. This one's screwed with my senses from the moment I first laid eyes on her. This case is going nowhere fast, and the captain'd love to pull me off this detail, but now she's under my skin and I've convinced the brass to let me stay.
In lust or not, I'm a cop, damn it, and even if she never really notices me, the last thing I want to do is take my next look at her in the city morgue.
Because I know this bastard by now. And he will strike again.
I guess I better back up a little.
The District, as they call this part of Nashville, is not only some of the most expensive real estate in the area, it's also just one block west of the river -- the Cumberland River. The river where, over the last three months, a dozen ambitious young singers, songwriters, waitresses, and prostitutes have been found floating facedown, their delicate necks crushed by a monster who squeezed them so tight they didn't just suffocate, they died with their larynxes crushed.
Takes a hell of a grip to do that.
Takes more than just a good grip to get a dozen women far enough away from the busy street where they work so's not to be heard when they scream. And from the things this monster'd done to them before they died, I knew they'd screamed.
So the prosti got in the truck, and she and her John drove off, and I didn't really give a damn. This bastard likes 'em young. And pretty. And dark. Dark hair. Dark eyes. Deep, sultry voice. Sugar and spice and everything that sets my night on fire...
Maggie.
Oh, Lord. Keep it together, man. Every bit of common sense and professional training I had seemed to go out the window as soon as I caught scent of her.

01 Jason's Blog
I'm Jason Fleetfoot. I've made a lot of stupid mistakes in my life. The stupidest of all was taking a job with some assholes intent on manufacturing illegal chemical weapons.
My sister, Natalie, lost her job when her company folded, and I lost mine because my fucking boss was a bastard. I've got authority issues. And control issues. All right, I'm seriously fucked up, but I wasn't going to let my sister starve because I couldn't keep it together.
So I made a deal with the devil and damn near got myself and Natalie killed.
She saved me. She and her cop boyfriend, Wolf. The name's not a joke. He's a werewolf. Did I mention we're shifters, Natalie and I? Deer shifters. If you think my human form is impressive, you should see me as a ten-point buck.
So yeah, a werewolf and a deer shifter. Somehow they're making it work.
As much as I hate being beholden to Wolf, I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for him. Once the cops cleared me, Wolf helped me get a job in the crime lab where I can use my knowledge of chemistry and computers for the good guys. As the newest hire, I work nights, babysitting the equipment and working on what comes in during the wee hours. For the most part, I like it. It's quiet and I get a chance to play around with new techniques and do a bit of programming. There's only one problem, Detective Drew Danvers.
He works nights too. Not because he's new, because he's a God-damned vampire. They say he was Changed against his will. But what the hell was he doing picking up a vampire at a bar? I certainly have no intention of fucking a vampire. No matter how damn fuckable Drew is. Yeah, I like men, what of it? And Drew is a fine specimen of a man, like some Viking warrior. He's at least 6' 3" with sculpted arms and pecs that make him look like he could lift a truck one-handed. Considering he's a vamp, he probably can.
Getting involved with Drew would be stupid on too many levels to count. And I'm finished with making stupid decisions. So why does my body want so desperately to be impaled on him -- his cock, his fangs, anything he'd like to stick in me. Natalie's right, my dick really doesn't communicate with my brain.
I don't just want to fuck him, I want to be taken by him, and I never want that. Like I said, I have control issues. But with Drew... No, there's never going to be anything with Drew.
I hear the buzz that signals someone entering the lab. I glance around from behind the mass spec machine. Shit! Speak of the devil or in this case his undead minion.
My pride will not let me hide even though I want to. I'm not afraid of him, even if I should be. I'm just afraid my unruly cock will give away my interest. His gaze slides up and down my body. He's looked at me like this before. But I have never been sure whether it's sexual interest or him salivating over me like I'm a piece of the lush chocolate cake my grandma used to make on Sundays. "You alone in here, Fleetfoot?"
Shit, maybe he does mean to make a meal out of me. No point in lying though. He probably already knows the answer. Aren't vampires supposed to be damn near omnipotent? "Newton called in sick, and everyone else is out in the field."
"Good." Danvers smiles, still eyeing me like I'm prey. If I were in deer form I'd bolt, white tail flagging danger. But I'm a man and his ice blue gaze has me glued to the spot. God above, he's gorgeous when he smiles. My cock is starting to get uncomfortable in my jeans.
My heart pounds as I try to interpret his response. Does he mean "Good, I'm going to give you to the best fuck of your life," or "Good I'm going to drain your blood and leave you for dead?"
"I need you to analyze these samples by the end of your shift, but I'd like you to keep it between the two of us."
I take the evidence bags and examine the contents; dirt, a few fibers, a nearly microscopic paint chip. "What am I looking for?"
"I took these from a car. I'm trying to tie the driver to a location outside the city. Send the results only to me and leave no record."
His assumption that I would do his bidding pissed me off. "Why?"
He smiles again. This time he lets his fangs show. "Because no one else needs to know about this particular investigation. I've decided to trust you. You want to be worthy of my trust."
Despite his being one of the undead, I'd heard he was a damn good detective. But what was he up to? Why the secrecy? "Are you threatening me?" He smirks. "Would you like me to?"
What the fuck kind of question is that? And why am I biting my lip to keep from saying yes?

Sam's rethinking his career and his future for several reasons, one being that he's very much in love with Bobby, and a little in love with Chantelle. If explaining to Sam that they are happy to consider a ménage relationship doesn't complicate things, how is Bobby to tell Sam that he and Chantelle can turn furry at will?
But even if his voice doesn't turn a little "husky" in the attempt, Bobby first has to live long enough to explain. Someone out there has a vendetta, and ideas that may end their future before it's even begun.

"I think I'll leave my helmet just where it is and carry you to the shower."
She pursed her lips and cocked her head, considering. "Fine, we can do that. Then you can do something else for me."
"What's that?"
"You can end this fight with Sam."
Bobby did nothing to suppress a groan. He pulled out of her, instantly aware of a feeling he could only liken to homesickness striking him in the general direction of his dick. It wanted to return to where it had been so nicely nestled and comfortable. "We are not fighting," he said, unsure whether he addressed the Sam issue, or was arguing with his cock. Down boy. No. You can't go back there. Well, you can... in a few minutes, in the shower. Patience.
"Maybe not a fight as such." Chantelle lay there ignoring the hand he held out to her to pull her to her feet. She seemed oblivious to any concerns that she might leave a wet patch on the seat. Great. Even that thought was turning him on. Both of them looked at his dick as it betrayed him. Stop waving at her.
"Bobby, he's miserable."
"He's moody."
"Miserable."
"Moody."
"Well, yes, but more so since I came on the scene." Chantelle toyed with her navel, one finger circling, drawing his gaze down to the action. She lay naked, one leg out, one pulled back, heel on the edge of the sofa, knee swaying side to side. He got little flashes of flushed and distended lips, and had to fight not to fall to his knees to kiss them. If he did that while they were having this conversation, she wouldn't let him worship her. She'd box him around the ears with her knees, and then clamp his head in a vice with her thighs. She gazed up at him, pouting. "You know he loves you."
Bobby took a deep breath. It wasn't the first time she'd told him, but he'd heard it the first time only last week. "I'm sorry. I just don't see it. He's never said anything, given me any such indication."
"As far as he's concerned, you're straight."
Bobby deliberately glowered at her.
"Fine, macho man. You know what I mean." She kicked at one of his legs. "You're policemen. How many gay police do you know who are obvious about it? It's not as if another man would be a big deal for you, but Sam wasn't to know that. He wasn't about to tell you he loved you and lose your friendship, or risk losing your respect. I know you wouldn't have reacted that way, but he didn't. Still doesn't."
He couldn't argue with the scenario she presented to him. Sam had been a good policeman before some drunken bastard had aimed the stolen car he was driving at him, and Sam had ended up with a pronounced limp and a desk job. Analyst. Yeah, right. Just the right job for Sam... not!
Chantelle had taken over Sam's position in the department, and Bobby had fallen instantly and secretly in love with her -- secretly to anyone but Sam who had seen it in his eyes the moment he looked at her. Sam had warned him to tone down his reaction to her before everyone in the station realised. He had done nothing to come between them, when he could have so easily blabbed. If Sam loved him as Chantelle said he did, that's what Bobby called heroic.
Undoubtedly sensing his feelings, Chantelle said, "I know it eats you up. You wouldn't have met me if Sam hadn't been hurt. We both sort of owe him in a way."
Crouching, Bobby met her gaze. "What would you have me do?"
She shrugged. "If it were possible, would you shy from a relationship with Sam?"
"You mean if I'd known, would I have done something about his feelings?"
She hesitated, and then nodded. Bobby gave the idea his attention.
"Maybe. I like Sam well enough."
Chantelle raised an eyebrow.
"Fine. I love the guy. I just hadn't thought of Sam sexually."
"Because he's a man?"
Bobby stared at her. "Because he's human," he said slowly, deliberately. "To be with Sam, I would have had to explain what I am. I'm sure I don't have to explain why." His penis sometimes behaved the way any canine's did, and if he "tied" to Sam while inside him, it would have taken some explaining. He could see it now, having to hold the other man down while he spat and cursed at him, just so he wouldn't injure himself by trying to pull away. That was the best course of events he could have hoped for. He'd hate to see fear in Sam's eyes.
"So you've as much to be afraid of as Sam, maybe more."
"I guess. It was never an issue because --"
"Because you were too blind to see he loved you. Hell, Bobby, I can smell the desire coming from him every time he's near you. Why can't you?"

01 Wolf's Blog

I'm Wolf, Officer Aidan "Wolf" Savage. I'm a werewolf. But unlike most of my kind these days, I'm one of the good guys even if I do scare the hell out of most people the first time they meet me.

I'm a damned good cop. If I'm tracking a criminal, he doesn't stand a chance of getting away. I love the chase, the takedown, the chance to be scary-as-hell, but there's one thing I hate about this job: stakeouts.

That's what tonight is all about, sitting in a hot, muggy car, eating doughnuts and watching the woods for signs of life. Man what I wouldn't give for a beer right now. And a warm house and a warm woman. OK, that train of thought isn't doing a damn thing for me. Because my partner and I are stuck right here, until we see something, or the sun comes up.

Jacobson, my partner, crushes his paper coffee cup and tosses it in the bag that serves as a trashcan. "I so don't want to do this shit tonight."

I don't think his comment deserves a response so I take a sip of my own coffee, which is damn near empty too.

Jacobson stares hard at the fence outside his window. "Do you actually think we're going to see anything? Anyone could have dumped those bodies by the park. Why would they come back now?"

We're parked along the outer perimeter of City Park. In its heyday it was a place for city residents to relax, have a picnic, get some exercise, and remember what trees actually looked like. When the economy went south, the city stopped maintaining it. Now it's an overgrown eyesore used primarily by the homeless, drug addicts, and kids looking for a thrill.

The department is constantly getting complaints about the vermin that thrive in the undergrowth, both animal and human. But recently, the volume of calls about trouble in the park has increased, and two teenagers were found dead at the park's northern gates last night. They'd been shot, execution style.

I take another sip of coffee before responding to Jacob's questions. "We've had too many complaints and none from the usual suspects. Something's up."

"Gang initiation?" Jacobson suggests.

I shake my head. "I don't think so."

His eyes narrow. "You smell something, don't you?"

I nod. Under the smells of sex, beer, and greasy food, there's an odd chemical odor. I can't place it, but I'm certain it doesn't belong in the park. It hadn't been there a few months ago when I'd pulled the short straw and been sent to run off a bunch of kids who'd come out here to party.

Before I can describe the smell to Jacob, I hear distant footsteps pounding the pavement. "Someone's running this way. Someone fast."

Jacob nods. I doubt he can hear a thing, but he's learned to trust my non-human ears without question. A few seconds later, a woman comes into view. She's wearing a sundress and a pair of high-heeled sandals so I doubt she's running for her health. Not that any sane woman would be in this part of town at night.

She has straight, reddish brown hair that swings past her waist. Her heavy round breasts are barely contained by her dress. Long shapely legs reach out for the ground, making my cock sit up and say hello. Her strides are so long she's practically leaping.

She's moving faster than any human should be in shoes like that. The wolf inside begs me to chase her for the sheer thrill of apprehending such a hot piece of flesh. But my cop instincts tell me this woman is our key to what's actually going on in the park.

Jacobson reaches for the door handle, but I lay a hand on his arm, stopping him. "Not yet."

"She's not out for an evening jog, Wolf. Someone's chasing her."

"Exactly. And we need to know who and why."

Jacobson frowned. "While letting her get killed in the process?"

I know my partner's right to protest, but my instincts tell me to take the risk.

The whine of a motorcycle engine grows louder. The woman runs past us and reaches the entrance to the park at the end of the block. The motorcycle driver guns his engine. He's only a block away. I watch as he pulls out a gun.

"Now?" Jacob asks.

"Now."

We exit the car and scale the fence, dropping down into the park, making our way through the thick undergrowth until we see the path. The motorcycle turns into the park and blows past us.

The woman darts into the woods up ahead. As she disappears, I swear I see the upraised white tail of a deer.

The driver fires a shot into the woods. Jacobson raises his gun and aims for the bike's tires. He misses. My heart pounds. If my instincts were wrong, if this woman died because I hesitated, I'll never forgive myself.

Suddenly an enormous stag leaps out of the woods directly in the motorcycle's path. The driver swerves. The bike falls on its left side, crushing the driver under it, as it skids to a stop.

My werewolf speed brings me to the carnage ahead of Jacobson, I touch the driver's neck, checking for a pulse. Nothing. He's dead.

I turn toward Jacobson and shake my head. The deer lies several feet ahead, his legs twitching. I ready my gun to put him out of his misery, but I stop cold when his scent hits my nostrils.

Jacobson reaches for his weapon. "Shouldn't we --"

I hold up my hand signaling him to stop. "He's a shifter." I start to tear off my uniform, preparing to shift. Now I know why I'd seen a white tail disappear into the woods. The long legs, the hair the color of a deer's fur, the superhuman speed. Our runner's no more human than I am. I turn to Jacobson. "Call this in and get us some backup. I'm going after the woman."

"Wait," he calls, but I'm already in my lupine form. I breathe in the scents of the night, damp leaves, warm earth, a few rodents. Then I catch her scent, deer mixed with the delicious musk of sweaty human female. My wolf salivates, eager for a chase.

I keep my nose low to the ground until the scent grows stronger. My ears prick. I can hear her breathing. I'm close. So close. She's hiding, but I know I'll flush her out. I wait for several long seconds.

She bursts from a tangle of bushes twenty feet or so ahead. And the chase is on. I tear after her, my wolf rejoicing in the freedom to run, to chase, to catch. But while my wolf is hungry for deer meat, my human side is hungry for this female in a whole different way.

I'm closing in. Her scent surrounds me. Sweat and fear and... whoa... sex. Bambie is as turned on by the chase as I am. Maybe this interrogation is going to be a whole lot more fun than I'd imagined.

All hell was breaking loose down in the New York street ten stories below. Gunfire sounded in a continuous pop pop pop, sounding thin and harmless at this distance. The way the NYPD cops huddled behind their cars revealed just how far from harmless it really was. They were outgunned all to hell by eight men with M-30s who strolled up and down the sidewalk in front of the bank, firing as if they were at a shooting range, not bothering to take cover at all. Didn't need to. The robbers were wearing military grade body armor, designed as protection against weapons a hell of a lot more powerful then the cops' handguns.

Luckily, our armor was better. And we hit harder.

Thing was, they had a hostage. Bank teller, or maybe a customer. The leader held her with an arm around her neck while he shot around her one handed. The woman screamed once, thin and high, like a rabbit being killed.

I could almost taste her terror. We had to get her out before they blew her brains all over the street.

Saving people is the whole point of the FBI Special Services unit. We get called in when hostages are in imminent danger and the cops are afraid rescue is impossible.

"Well, this is a Charlie Foxtrot," Feral drawled, using the Marine expression for another Marine expression: cluster fuck. "Saving that hostage is going to be a bitch, Cap."

"I'll get her," I told him. "You distract the asshole brigade." And try not to lose your frickin' mind. I didn't say that, though. Thanks to the Desert Warrior program, it wasn't something he could really control. Besides, three tours of duty in the 'Stans, two as Black Ops, had left Feral with some serious issues.

I keyed my throat mic to broadcast on the cops' frequency. "Fox and Feral, coming in. Hold your fire."

Feral leaped, a perfect, flat dive out into space. I tried not to watch the flex of his ass under the dragon scales, but it's one hell of a view, and I'm a girl who loves a fine male behind. But then, everything Feral's got is fine.

As he shot his line at one streetlamp, I aimed my fist at another and sent a mental message through my armor. The thin, high tensile line shot out of my wrist unit, and its weighted end swung around the light support. I gave it a tug. It held, so I ordered the line to retract and leaped off the roof of the ten-story building. Any normal human would have been street pizza, but neither of us had been completely human in years.

The top secret military program we'd volunteered for in 2032 had altered our DNA, increasing our endurance as well as the strength of our muscles and the density of our bones. We were now six times as strong as a human the same size and gender. And considering how damned big Feral was, that's saying something.

Being a hell of a lot smaller, I'm nowhere near as strong as he is. But I'm fast, and agile, and I know how to use what I've got.

The line jerked me down toward the streetlamp. For a moment, it was like flying -- a breathtaking swoop through empty air, the ground careening toward my face. If I mistimed the release, they'd have to hose me off the side of the bank.

Christ, I loved this.

My timing was dead on. The line stopped retracting at my command, and I swung upward, slowing my plunge just enough. I released the line at the top of the arc and went free fall, tucking into a ball to hit the ground rolling. The impact jarred my teeth even through ten layers of Titan Laminate helmet and an inch of anti-concussive gel.

I bounced to my feet. There were two thugs between me and the guy with the hostage, so I threw myself into a roundhouse and kicked one robber right behind the ear. His helmet cracked under my Titan-cored boot, and he fell like a bag of wet cement. I glimpsed a figure whirling toward me and drove my elbow into his throat, not quite hard enough to crush his larynx. He choked and collapsed, more interested in breathing than giving me shit.

I raced to the hostage's captor, snapped one booted foot up and kicked the bastard right in the back of his thigh. Crack! He went down with a howl, dropping his gun to grab for his broken leg. Greenstick fracture, given the way I'd hit him. Served the fucker right.

I hauled the hostage up from where she'd fallen in a heap with her captor, pushed her ahead of me, then bent to scoop up the jackass's gun. "Go, go, go!"

She looked back, saw my facemask, and screamed like a horror trid blonde.

"I'm a federal agent!" I yelled at her. "Get your ass moving!"

She ran, skittering on her high heels as best she could. I galloped behind her, one hand on her shoulder as I sought to both steady her and shield her with my body.

Hey, I was wearing full body armor. She was wearing JC Penney.

BlamBlamBlam!

Something that felt like a Volvo rammed me in the ribs. The impact spun me around and dropped me. My head hit the pavement with a meaty melon thunk, and stars exploded behind my eyes. When the pretty lights faded, I saw the girl get snatched behind a patrol car by a long, blue-clad arm.

I couldn't breathe. My chest felt paralyzed.

"Fox!" Feral shouted in my ear on our com frequency, but when I tried to answer, my frozen diaphragm still refused to budge.

He made a weird growling sound, building to a howl that might have been my name. Oh fuck, he's gone berserker.
