Saturday Book Diver Interviews Rafir Caras from Dying For a White Christmas by Reneé George

Welcome to the Saturday Book Diver! Today I’m in downtown Kansas City at the vampire club Corazon de la Muerte, where I’ll be talking to Rafir Caras.

The club won’t open for several hours, but I’ve been allowed in early to conduct the interview with Rafir. At the moment I’m sitting at the bar. It’s a large structure that had once been an auto glass building. Now it has a spacious dance floor as well as cages for various carnal acts.

Rafir is approaching now. He’s a tall, handsome man with thick, dark hair. Actually, he’s more than an average man. Rafir is a werewolf and even from a distance I can feel his animal magnetism. As he nears, I can’t help wondering what he looks like in his wolf form.

After greeting me, he sits on the stool next to me and hooks a heel on one of the rungs. His other long leg remains stretched out. His thigh muscles tighten beneath snug denim.

I meet his warm, brown gaze and start the interview.

SBD: Hello, Rafir. Thank you for meeting me before the club opens.

Rafir: Not a problem. The boss said it was okay. We just need to wrap it up before the sun goes down.

SBD: I’ll be quick. The magic doesn’t allow me to stay in fiction worlds for very long. I’ve heard you’re an alpha werewolf in a rather unusual pack. Will you tell us about it?

Rafir: Unusual? Try a recipe for disaster.

My original pack member, Julia, is human, and she’s had some bad experiences with vampires. Ten years as a slave to vampires almost completely shattered her. She’s such a beautiful woman--scars and all. I only wish she could see herself the way I do.

Our newest pack mate, Alex, well, he’s also had bad experiences with vampires. When I found him, he was looking for a way to die. I had to decide--do I kill him or keep him? I decided to keep him. There is something special about Alex, something in him that drives my instinct to protect. It’s the same with Julia. You’d think it would be easier for them to find common ground, but not so much. Something about her hating vampires and him being one.

Did I mention Alex was a vampire? No? I should have. He’s less than a year old as an immortal, and he’s not coping so well. Being with us, Julia and I, has helped him, I think. In human years, he’s early twenties, so he hasn’t seen much of life.

Julia and Alex are my home now. Losing either one would be impossible to overcome.

SBD: Would you share some of the problems that arise from sharing your life with a vampire and a human?

Rafir: Trying to keep Julia from chopping off Alex’s head when he’s dead during daylight hours, that’s a problem. Alex often wakes up really hungry. We have to be careful to make sure Julia isn’t alone with him when the sun goes down. Julia is older, and doesn’t put up with a lot of shit. Alex’s youthful...eagerness...can sometimes get on her nerves. While that doesn’t have any thing to do with their human and vampire status, it does cause problems at times.

[In spite of the problems he describes, his affection for Alex and Julia is obvious by the expression on his face.]

SBD: The holidays are approaching. How do you and your pack plan to spend them?

Rafir: You know how the saying goes, “you can’t please everybody, but pissing them off is easy”? Well, Julia hates Christmas, while Alex has this child-like enthusiasm for the holiday. It has been like World War III at our apartment lately. I want them both to be happy, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen.

[I can’t help hoping that the holidays will turn out well for this extraordinary trio, but from what Rafir has told me, I’m not so sure how jolly the season will be.]

SBD: Please tell us one characteristic about each of your lovers that you find exciting.

Rafir: Julia is strong, and vital, and gorgeous. She’s possibly the bravest and strongest person I know. She’s passionate and not afraid to try anything. You wouldn’t think that someone who has taken so much damage in her past could be so open and sexy. She is everything a mate should be. Alex is generous and loving. He really cares about how his presence impacts Julia. It doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy as hell. He’s also up for anything. I never thought my wolf side would call to two mates, but it did. I can’t and won’t regret either one of them.

[Well Rafir appears to be the kind of man who can satisfy two mates, that’s for sure!]

SBD: How do you think Alex and Julia would describe you?

Rafir: I feel dumb answering this question. It’s weird talking about myself, but I’ll try.

Julia might consider me selfish now that I’ve brought home Alex, and without discussing it with her. She actually shot me shortly after it happened. Of course, she was trying to shoot Alex. Before though, and maybe still, I’d say she’d describe me as her protector, strong and handsome, sexy, maybe. I love her body as much as she loves mine. We’ve always had a great chemistry.

As to Alex, I’m not sure. He might say I am pushy. He’s quirky enough, he might say I’m delicious. He gets a regular diet of werewolf blood. Although, my blood isn’t the only thing he likes in his mouth. *shaking head* I can’t believe I said that. The boy really is rubbing off on me.

SBD: Please describe yourself in three words.

Rafir: Protective. Unpredictable. Horny...you’re not going to use that last bit, are you? *grins*

SBD: [Chuckles] Sorry, Rafir, but the magic records the interview and I can’t edit or delete a character’s actual words. However I’m sure none of our readers will mind that word in particular! It’s almost time for me to go, but before I do, would you give us your favorite excerpt from Dying For a White Christmas?

Rafir: Here’s a little something from a moment where I felt like I was losing everything. It can make a werewolf a little crazy.
Excerpt:
Alex looked away and held perfectly still under Rafir’s grip -- a kind of stillness only a vampire can achieve. He’d never seen him completely turned before. If he’d had a beating heart, it would have been pounding as hard as Raf’s. The werewolf’s pulsing blood thrummed along his skin causing Alex to lick his lips. It wouldn’t do for the wolf to think Alex thought of him as food. It was bad enough he’d inadvertently challenged him by glaring into his eyes. He suspected the right thing would have been to look away. If he’d been wolf himself, he might not have resisted the urge to cower. His human side had wanted to cower, but his vampire side insisted he was the top of the food chain.
Rafir’s were-form fascinated, frightened, and turned him on all at the same time. The fur along his skin was coffee-brown and short, more like that of a deer, not a dog, and definitely not the shaggy hair of a wolf. He wanted to reach out and touch Rafir, to stroke the skin resembling brushed suede. The wolf’s hands gripping his arms prevented him. He was tall -- taller than Rafir by several inches -- but now his lover was a towering hulk of power and energy. He could rend Alex from limb to limb, and Alex conceded to himself he would let him.
And except for the fur, his face still looked rather human. There wasn’t any elongating of the nose or real animal-like features made popular by Hollywood. Instead, it was still Rafir, only exaggerated. Rafir’s amber irises had a dark ring around them. They fluctuated and contracted with emotion as he snorted and chuffed. The heat of his sharp breath brushed against Alex’s cheeks and neck. He heard Julia gasp. He looked at her and shook his head just once. Rafir wasn’t home anymore, and while Alex might survive whatever Rafir had planned, Julia -- a human -- would not. Run, he mouthed to her. Hide.
A sob escaped Julia as she scrambled backward, turned, then leaped toward the bedroom. Rafir reacted by letting go of Alex’s arms, twisting his body and ready to pounce.
“No!” Alex shouted. He pushed the werewolf off balance, landing on top of him as they slammed to the floor. “Julia! Get in the bathroom and lock the door!”
The bedroom door slammed shut behind her. Alex heard the bathroom door and the clicking turn of the lock. He had to distract Rafir, keep him from going after Julia. He fisted his hand and slammed it into Rafir’s side.
A roar of rage tore through the were-beast. More cat-like than possible, Rafir flipped and shoved Alex sending him flying across the floor. He hit the wall with a thump, pain bursting from his chest where he’d been hit. The beast stood, shaking his head, then sniffing the air toward the bedroom.
Alex shouted, “Is that all you got?” He barely noticed the muddy blood seeping through the shredded fabric of his T-shirt. His jacket crowded his arms, and he wiggled out of it as he stood, bracing himself against the wall. “Ass.”
Rafir roared again, his focus shifting entirely onto Alex. An inhuman, “Mine,” rumbled from his mouth. He grabbed Alex and threw him to the ground. Alex winced as claws ripped at his pants. He didn’t fight back. Rafir needed him submissive, which meant allowing whatever was going to happen to happen.

I think I’ll ask the bartender for a cold drink of water after that one! I’d hoped to see Rafir in his wolf form, so the excerpt was just perfect, don’t you agree?

The sun has set and it’s almost time for the club to open. People have already lined up at the front door, so Rafir shows me out the back. We shake hands before I go and I watch him disappear inside.

After talking to this enigmatic man. . .uh, werewolf. . .I’m more interested than ever in his mates. Someday I’d like to meet the human and the vampire who have captured the heart of Rafir Caras.

If you’d like to find out more about them as well, check out Dying For a White Christmas by Reneé George.

Blurb:
A beast does not know that he is a beast, and the nearer a man gets to being a beast, the less he knows it.
-- George MacDonald

After years of self-denial, Dr. Nathan Greer is finding it harder to live with his inner beast. He was made a vampire against his will, and trying to live a "normal" life has become a dangerous game. He has no choice but to seek help from a master vampire.
Guillermo Perez, Kansas City's oldest Vampire and owner of the night club Corazon de la Muerte, is powerful, sexy, and more self-assured than anyone Nathan has ever known. The last thing Nathan ever expects is to fall under the spell of this hot-blooded Vamp -- and he certainly didn't plan to enjoy himself in the process.
A surprising path lies before Nathan and Guillermo: electrifying sex, a killer seeking power, a jealous ex-lover, a 700-year-old Viking blood servant, a religious mother who meddles, a fanatical group of ancient vampires hell bent on destroying them, and a terrible glimpse at one possible future. On this journey, Nathan must face a terrible choice. Can he embrace his beast or will he be devoured by it?
This collection contains the previously released novellas in the Beast series: Taking Back Control, Eat Your Heart Out, Old Ways, New Days, Soul Tripping, and Rock the Line, as well as a short story in the Beast world previously published as an encounter in the Cheeky Changeling e-zine.

The rubber between the swinging doors sighed as Dr. Nathan Greer stepped into the corridor, his lab jacket swishing with the rhythm of his footsteps. He'd seen only one patient in the last three hours, a minor head injury from a drunken misunderstanding. His focus was the break room, his intent, a smoke. Fumbling through his pockets for his Marlboros, he pulled out a cigarette and palmed his lighter.

A static tingle ran down his spine.

Nathan had always been one of those people who attracted electricity from the air. He hated getting out of his car after driving, detested shaking hands with people, avoided touching clothes and such, because the little shocks were a pain in the ass. But since the change, static electricity running through him had been a warning.

It meant sex. And that sex meant bad things might happen to good or at least the not-so-bad people.

A warm flush fell over him and heat from the walls caressed his skin. It was definitely sex. Unbidden, he reached for the source. His smooth fingers dragged along the wall until they touched the supply closet door. His palm was on fire. A fever spread up Nathan's arm.

Oh God! It was happening again.

His body trembled and the driving need roared in his ears. He reached up and ran his hand through his coarse, brown hair. Exhaling tentatively, he listened to hushed noises coming from the closet. Slowly, he reached for the knob, opening the door just wide enough to peer into the dimly lit room.

Jeanine Antrose, one of the operating room nurses, lay naked on the supply table. She arched her back, full round breasts with erect nipples pointing skyward. Nathan shifted his stance to accommodate his semi-erection.

As he watched Jeanine, a stinging pain made him close his eyes when they slipped from human to less than human. He bit his lip hard enough to break the soft skin and slid his tongue over the split flesh. The dark blood was not satisfying. His eyelids rolled to a close.

Shit. What am I doing here? he questioned, but he couldn't force his body to leave. Unable to resist, he opened his eyes to watch.

A man rested on his knees in front of Jeanine. Bulky muscles made it obvious that he worked out with weights to an obsession. Blond curls danced against his back while his mouth rained kisses up her leg, leaving a glistening trail on her smooth skin. His hands caressed the inside of her thighs as he languidly ran his tongue over her flesh.

A small gasp of pleasure escaped her barely parted lips and sweat shimmered on her flat stomach. Jeanine's hands untangled from her long, dark mane and moved down her chest. Her fingers tweaked her tightly drawn nipples before rubbing down her abdomen until she touched the curly ends of her pubic hair.

Nathan's muscles tightened and his hard erection pressed outward on his Dockers. He knew it was dangerous to stay. He could feel the pounding of their hearts beating in unison. The heated blood rapidly coursing through their veins brought a flush to their bared flesh and warmed his body even more.

I need to stop watching.

His eyes refused to turn away.

The blond man lapped her dripping sex. His tongue moved enthusiastically in and out of her pussy. A shuddering breath escaped her mouth and she grabbed her lover's hair, pulling him up. His lips fell hard against hers. The outside of her mouth shone wet over mauve remnants of wasted lipstick. Her lover's strong hands pulled her to a standing position. Those same hands lingered over her large, soft breasts, his thumbs circling her nipples. Moving closer, she kissed his neck and down his chest, biting him playfully, tugging on his nipples with her teeth.

His gasp was followed with a sucking breath. Jeanine licked the line of hair that ran down his abdomen, squeezing his hard shaft with her agile hands. Her tongue licked over the tip, then slipped it into her mouth. She worked her mouth over him back and forth, slowly at first. He flung his head back and moaned.

The slight tingling Nathan had felt earlier now felt like thousands of needles pricking his skin. "Oh fuck," he whispered.

Nathan's world became cloudy for a moment. His eyes dilated to accommodate the darkness. Retractable fangs slid forward over human incisors. It was nearly too late to stop watching.

His Beast laughed from within. The Beast knew it was already far too late.

Nathan watched the muscular man lift Jeanine. Grabbing a handful of her thick hair, he forced her forward onto the table. A smile played on her lips while his free hand steadied his body to slide into her with practiced ease.

Jeanine panted loudly with every thrust. Her lover grabbed her thighs, lifting her legs off the ground, using them like handles to pull her against his rigid shaft in assertive, rhythmic movements.

Nathan dug his fingernails into the palm of his hand. Red stains appeared on his white lab coat. Hunger and lust surged through him until he felt he would pass out.

"This feels so good. Faster. Faster," Jeanine said breathlessly.

The man obliged her, attacking her body with an onslaught of aggressive thrusts.

"I'm going to explode," she told him, her voice two octaves lower than normal.

Nathan's inner demon forced its dark thoughts into his mind. It was so close to completely taking over his entire body. He wants this! The Beast can't have this! Nathan's mind screamed. He couldn't allow his demon to win this battle, but Nathan's will could not match the hunger of the Beast.

"Nathan?" a quiet voice asked from behind him.

His body stiffened and he pulled the door closed. The voice belonged to Sandra Jackson, an attending physician and friend. He kept his back to her. She reached out and touched his shoulder. It was all he could do to keep his Beast from turning around and ripping out her throat.

His shoes barely made a sound as he fled down the corridor.

"Nathan!" she called out.

Explaining would come later. He would tell her he suddenly felt sick and had to vomit, a flu bug of some kind. For now, getting the hell out of there before he killed somebody was the most important thing on the agenda.

He found his way to the roof of the hospital. Normalizing his body was a challenge. His lungs expanded as he tried to inhale maximum amounts of cool air. It was so hard to change back to human form. He beat his fists against his forehead, trying to force the mutation out, and finally curled up into a ball next to a heating pipe.

"Doctor Greer?" a soft voice asked.

Sandra had found him.

"Leave me alone," he growled.

"Nathan," she said with a mixture of concern and uncertainty.

The warmth of her body drawing closer to him made his eyes slip again. He wanted to scream at her to go away but was afraid if he moved his demon would take over. It was taking every ounce of his energy to hold it in check.

He felt her touch his back.

He roared as if in pain and reared away from her. Startled, she fell back onto the graveled rooftop. It had been a long time since he had felt this much out of control. Her fear was like an exotic perfume, arousing him even more. Glowing green eyes turned to face her. Sandra screamed, scrambling backwards on all fours, trying to put distance between them. With lightning speed, he closed the gap in one giant leap.

He used one hand to hold her down.

She screamed again.

He shoved her hard against the small pebbles and pinned her beneath him.

"I want to taste you," he snarled. Those five little words evoked the response he most wanted from her. Fear. Her blue eyes flared wide with terror.

His monster chuckled.

With nothing human left, claws that had once been hands ripped at her soft-peach lab coat and tore at the turtleneck sweater until her throat was completely visible. The Beast barely noticed her small, firm breasts. She struggled against him.

Nathan watched the blood that flowed through her veins pump faster and faster. He reached down, grabbed the back of her head and wrenched her trembling body up to him. The fullness of her neck captivated him. The rush of her pulse pounded in his head until he could no longer hear her screams. This was what his monster wanted, what he had denied himself for three years.

He flung his head backwards, ready to strike with fangs protracted to their full length.

A solitary voice wormed its way into the darkness that filled his mind. He hesitated, slowly becoming aware of his body. Frantic fists beat against his chest and shoulders. The voice reverberated in screams and sobs until it penetrated the cloud of his demon. It reached down into the depths of his being.

"Nathan, no! No, Nathan... no, please... Nathan. Stop!"

Her voice reached that hidden place in his mind -- the place Nathan retreated to when the Beast came out to play. Instantly, Nathan released her. Sandra's body dropped hard to the ground. Eyes still less than human looked into her desperate, terrified face. She fled backwards, trying to pull the torn remnants of her clothing over her bared flesh.

"I'm sorry," he groaned, anguish pouring through his body. He pounded his fists against his head, all the while hating his monster, hating himself.

The look of horror in Sandra's eyes was mixed with pity. The fact that he still wanted to drink, nay, bathe in her warm red blood sickened him. The sight of her, scared and helpless, with him wanting her because of it, was more than Nathan could stand. He turned and ran to the edge of the building. He looked back at her once before he jumped, landing with a solid thud on both feet, three stories down.

Spring 1990

"Hell, yeah!" Vic high-fived his partner in crime, then threw the keys to his Ford Mustang on the desk. He had a nice buzz going, and he didn't want the night to end. It had been a great birthday. Over the last two semesters, he'd become increasingly mesmerized by Raisin' Caine, his dorm mate. Caine was two years ahead of him at college, and his whole lifestyle was one big "fuck you" to the world. Vic wished he could be more like Caine, and tonight he'd gotten a big taste of that life. Caine had even let Vic borrow some of his clothes.
He watched Caine flop onto his unmade twin bed. Caine spoke, quietly, his voice gravelly from too much smoking and screaming. "It was a good night, eh, bonehead?"
"Fantastic." Vic licked his lower lip. The crack from where he'd been hit while moshing was still sore and bleeding. He smiled. "I had a kick ass time."
Caine's legs were long and lean as he stretched them out. Following the line of his tight blue and red plaid pants, he wore black combat boots with skull-shaped eyelets. His sleeveless shirt clung to his sweat-dampened chest and abdomen. He placed an arm above his head, and his other hand rubbed his stomach. Caine's head turned, his spiky, green-tinted mohawk rotating like a switch, until his pale green eyes met Vic's gaze. It embarrassed Vic that he'd been caught staring. He fixed his eyes to the wall above the bed.
Caine's side of the room was predominantly black, blue, and red. Worn and dirty posters covered the wall in a frenetic collage of The Ramones, New York Dolls, Suicide Commandos, Mad Sin, and several other punk bands. Vic had been raised on country and rock-n-roll -- the punk scene had never touched his small hometown. He'd been bred to be a quarterback, date the head cheerleader, make straight A's, and always do what his parents wanted. Vic's life had been a cliché from conception. Never in a thousand lifetimes would anyone believe he and Caine could be friends. But it didn't change the fact that they were.
"You look good, kid." Caine reached over to his nightstand and pulled a pack of cigarettes from the drawer. He flicked his lighter once and sucked as the flame brightened the end. Smoke drifted off the cherry, and trickled from Caine's small but full-lipped mouth. "I like you in my pants."
"I... I..." It dawned on Vic that Caine was making fun of him. He gestured to the ripped black jeans that were a size too tight, and a couple of inches too long. "Better on me than you."
"Fuck off with that," Caine said, laughing behind the words. He mimicked like he was going to flick the cigarette at Vic, and raised his eyebrows, his mouth turning up in a Billy Idol snarl.
Vic waved his hand in a "whatever" gesture and turned his back to Caine. He had to -- his cock had turned rock stiff, and as tight as the pants were, it would be hard for Caine to miss it. "You're an idiot." He unbuttoned the fly, determined to get the pants off, and some loose pajamas on instead.
They were tight over the hips, and he squirmed to get the back side down his ass. That's when Caine tackled him from behind.
"Gotcha!"
The move startled Vic. He fell forward, smacking his head on the side of his own bed rail, landing next to the bed facedown on the floor.
"You asshole," he yelled, touching the sore spot as it rose on his forehead.
Caine helped him onto his back. "Shit, dude. Damn, sorry. I was just messing around."
"You could've really hurt me."
Caine brushed Vic's short hair back. "You're not bleeding, but damn, that's going to be a helluva goose egg." He pushed on the bump.
Vic grimaced. "Stop that."
"Sorry." He leaned in for a closer look. Then unexpectedly, he pulled Vic's shirt down over his shoulder. "I still can't believe you got the tattoo. Your folks are going to shit."
"What they don't know..." Vic smiled, then grimaced. "Shit, my head hurts."
"Man, seriously, I didn't mean to hurt you." Caine's warm breath whispered across Vic's eyes. It smelled like tequila and tobacco, but not unpleasantly so.
"I'm fine. Really."
"Dude." Caine shook his head, and thumbed the edges of the wound. "You should get an ice pack on that thing."
Caine's lips were inches from Vic's. Vic felt his hands tremble as he raised his neck to move them nearer. He was scared. Shit, yeah. He was frightened as hell. He pulled back a little. Caine was still fixated on the rising knot. He had no idea how Vic felt. They were just two guys, roommates and friends.
"Fuck it," he mumbled. Closing the rest of the space, he placed a small kiss on Caine's lips.
His friend froze, except for his eyes. They shifted down to meet Vic's.
Vic scrambled for an apology. One that could make up for the line he'd just crossed. "Sorry, man." Inadequate, he knew. He gulped the thick saliva gathering in his mouth. "Really sorry. I... I didn't mean it."
Instead of shouting at Vic, or worse, punching him, Caine muttered, "Too bad."

“This is totally whack,” Mire Darkly murmured as he wiped the sweat weeping over his brow.
It was Mire’s first night in town, and he was finding the climate, and the locals, less than hospitable or pleasant. Even with it being Christmas (a favorite of the humans), the heat made everyone miserable.
Carelessly, he threw on a pair of cotton shorts, a tank top, and his flip-flops and headed down the stone steps to the lobby bar. Earlier when he’d checked in, there had been a cool breeze from the window air conditioning unit, a saving grace if the bar was still open at two in the morning.
A young man, maybe late twenties, solid build, and thick dark hair, stood behind the bar cleaning a glass with a wet rag Mire suspected was less than fresh. The man unplugged a pitiful sprig strung with colored lights. A poor man’s Christmas tree.
“Cerrado,” the man said, rolling his R’s in a way that made Mire’s flesh dance.
“Uhm, do you speak English? Habla usted ingles?” Mire spoke a little Spanish, not much though, but enough to understand that the man had just told him the bar was “closed.” If he was going to convince him to stay open for a little while, it would help if they were speaking the same language.
The bartender rubbed another glass from the inside out, his intense stare betraying nothing more than boredom. “We’re closed,” he said in response.
“It’s really hot in my room. I was hoping to soak up some air so I could get some sleep.”
“Closed,” the man repeated.
Mire walked over to the pool table. The cool breeze of the air conditioner hit his back, delightfully chilling. His core temperature had to have hit a hundred and twenty degrees easily, and the small unit felt like an arctic blast. “La brisa esta rica,” he said, trying to charm the man with a phrase he knew.
“Look, mister. I don’t know how many ways you need to be told the bar is closed. Cerrado. Fermé. Chiuso. Geschlossen. Closed.”
Well, he was definitely putting a new spin on how Mire viewed the locals. The man had spoken Spanish, French, Italian, German, and English. A dichotomy. An educated guy in an impoverished village, working as a bartender. Getting cool was becoming secondary to his fascination with the local flavor.
“Shouldn’t you be at home with your wife and children? Christmas morning and all that ho-ho stuff.” Mire wasn’t above pursuing a married man, but it was good to know as much about your prey as possible.
“Closed,” the man repeated, giving nothing away.
Mire rolled a ball across the pool table. “I’m Mire Darkly. What’s your name?”
“Nadie.” He put a glass on the pyramid stack behind the bar. “I’m afraid I must ask you to return to your room, or go elsewhere.”
Nobody, huh? If the man wanted to be known as nobody, Mire would oblige. “Well, Nadie. This is a one-horse town, and I’m afraid this bar is the only watering hole.” Mire took off his tank top and rubbed his hand across his chest. “How about we play a game of eight-ball to decide if the place stays open for a while longer or not?”
Nadie put the wet towel over his shoulder. He came out from behind the bar, and Mire noticed his white T-shirt was stained with dust from the red clay that permeated the region. His faded jeans fit him snugly at the hips. His eyes narrowed as he drew closer to his unwelcome customer. “There is nothing in it for me. You win, you win. I win, you’ve succeeded in keeping the bar open for a while longer, you win.”
Up close, Nadie’s eyes were like the crystal clear cenote Mire had dipped in on his way to Itzen. They also had the same refreshing appeal. Mire blinked, then silently cursed at the change of expression on Nadie’s face. He must have blinked with his internal lids, something that would freak out even the heartiest of humans.
“What would you like as a prize?” he asked the bartender.
