Taryn, the Amazon, pressed her lips to the horn and blew, the loud noise traveling through the curled ridges. The dragon reared his head from the massive slabs of rock forming an archway into the mountain. Excitement sizzled in her belly. He was coming out of his lair!

Looking upward, Taryn trained her gaze on the dragon now circling in the skies. Flat, spiked horns jutted out from the sides of his head, and large, violet-colored wings glided through the air with apparent ease despite his immense proportions. He snorted loudly, seemingly offended by her presence, and swooped lower. A fiery blaze of orange and red spewed from his slackened jaws. Startled, Taryn sprang backward, grabbing the hilt of her sword and snatching it from the scabbard slung across her back. I didn't come here to fight you, dragon.

Shimmering green scales gleamed in the dusky rays of sunset drifting beyond the horizon. Gods above, this was the closest she'd ever been to him. What on earth had possessed her to trek all day long from her village sequestered in the forest to visit the dragon's lair? Her legs trembled as his wings flapped violently in the evening breeze. Taryn squared her shoulders and widened her stance, pointing the sword forward. Her Amazon sisters would be ashamed if they saw the reaction the dragon was inciting in her. She straightened to her full five feet ten inches, amazingly tall for one not of true Amazonian blood.

Why are you here? His voice echoed inside her head.

Taryn drew in a breath and pushed a thick braid behind her ear. "I have no ulterior motives, except to thank you for aiding my sisters and me yesterday." She slid the sword back into its sheath. "I'm ashamed to admit it, but we were ill-prepared when the centaurs attacked." He hovered in front of her at a distance, his long, spiny tail swaying back and forth. Taryn resisted a smile. She had witnessed him take down two of the centaurs with one powerful sweep of that tail.

Don't expect such assistance from me next time. I offered my aid out of boredom.

Taryn arched an eyebrow. Speaking through telepathy made his lies no less evident. "Were you suffering from boredom a week ago as I took my afternoon bath in the river? Or perhaps you and your dragon friends have mapped out a schedule of my activities."

I have no dragon friends. He roared, smoke filtering from his nostrils.

Glancing up at the isolated crevice inside the mountain, Taryn said in a low voice, "I know."

He stared at her through cold, golden-yellow eyes. The icy stare gave the jagged scar running from below his left horn to the side of lips a bone-chilling appearance. You've said your piece, now leave.

"So you won't admit you've been watching me?" Taryn placed a hand on her hip and shook her head. "That's too bad, dragon, because your cave looks kind of cozy from the outside." Oh, gods. Why had she said that? Only an idiot would tell a monstrous dragon his home was inviting. An idiot who was itching to sleep with said dragon.

He scowled at her and lowered the lid of his damaged eye. Without saying a word, he swished his long tail to the side, his striking wings fanning in the air. The dragon was leaving. She couldn't allow it. Not when she'd thought all night about him and her journey here. "Wait!"

He stopped in mid-flight, staring her down, but saying nothing.

"If you won't answer my questions, at least give me your name."

He lifted his head a notch and curled his lips. Darius.

Food stores running low, I resolved I would not die down here in the stark silence of my burrow. I know there are dangers outside: wild animals, fatal injuries, and worst of all, the beasts that had once been men. Wild, feral creatures infected with a virus that turns normal men into half animal beasts.

But I needed to feel the sun on my face, hear the whispers of the wind as it caresses my skin. To smell the earth, the flowers, the freshness after it rains. To know life goes on outside my isolated tomb. It was worth the risk of a horrid death for even one hour of such ecstasy.

I never imagined coming face to face with two young beasts. They want my burrow -- and me. And they aren't planning to take no for answer. It would seemed my loneliness has ended. At least until they realize what a burden I will be. In a world where only the strongest survive, I'm excess baggage. Unless I can convince them otherwise.

Eight days...

Elias Wylder, that egotistical SOB, had the gall to trick Mariah into bonding with him during her Opening Ceremony! Now her year of hiding is almost up. Only eight days and she'll be free. In eight days, Mariah can repudiate the bond with Wylder and claim her rightful place in Arcane Society. Until then, she dare not allow the powerful warlock to discover she still loves him, despite his trickery. She must keep her distance, no matter how close she wishes they could be.

But Wylder's not the kind to take no for an answer.

Humbled by her loss, Elias will do anything to find Mariah, even begging the Council of Magick for help. Unfortunately, his year of futile searching is almost up. An Athame Warlock must present his lady to the Council before the year passes, or lose her forever. Elias can't allow that to happen. Mariah's taken more than Wylder's magick -- she's stolen his heart. He's got just eight days to find her, and win her back!

(Northeastern Division Time)

"By the Lord and Lady! Wylder, how did you come to misplace the academy's most promising student?"

Wylder sneered at Lemuel Westerner, refusing to give the irritating council member the satisfaction of answering. Yet he could not help acknowledging, if only to himself, his utter responsibility for the disaster now facing him. By totally fucking up, asshole. How else?

My own actions had caused this. I saw something I wanted, something wondrous, and with my usual damned arrogance, tried to snatch it for myself.

"And why are you only now bringing this to our attention?"

Just being here, ordered to be here, had his temper flaring hotter than the salamander-ignited fires blazing through San Francisco at this very moment, and here was Westerner, an old enemy, finally mated and a full member of the council, trying to lord it over him.

Elias Wylder -- the most powerful warlock since his evil ancestor, Grimm the Rogue -- glared at Lemuel Westerner until the hairy, burly shifter gulped and hunched down in his seat. Elias narrowed his eyes, bunched his thick eyebrows in an intimidating scowl, until he realized there was more likelihood of the man growing a second head than there was of his growing the balls to truly confront Elias in challenge. "What's gotten into you, little mule? You know better than to speak to me in that tone of voice."

Just the thought of Lemuel trying to stand up to him made Elias's lips turn up in a contemptuous smirk. "Little cat, you couldn't possibly be thinking about challenging me. Even drawing upon the enhanced power bestowed by your mated state, you haven't a hope in hell of defeating me. Any contest between the two of us would be ludicrous -- no contest at all."

The werecat's lips pulled back from his teeth in an angry snarl but before he could do other than posture, another council member spoke up. "I, too, would like to know the particulars of Miss Maganistus' graduation. Where is the record of the ceremony? If you officiated at it, why has she yet to come before this council to receive her diploma and wand? The shock waves we've been attributing to her graduation were felt as far away as the Outer Isles."

Lady Selima's quiet voice worked wonders on his mood, as usual, and Elias turned to face her, sensing her nurturing magick flowing over him, calming his fractious anger. "Until now, I deemed it a personal matter. I didn't feel the council needed the information, as at the time, it did not fringe upon national security. It does now."

Her gentle mind reached out, attempting to touch and soothe his turbulent spirit. He closed his eyes, resting a brief moment in the peace she generated before mentally jerking back with a curse. Giving a sharp shake of his head, he broke contact with the compassionate lady, unable to afford even one second of weakness. The fluctuation in his power continued to increase. His control deteriorated daily. "Stop stroking my aura, Selima. You weren't invited."

The mellow magicker spread her hands out, palm up. "I sense great upheaval in your heart and soul. I but seek to ease --"

"Butt out! I don't need you softening me up." His low growl rumbled through the room like static electricity. "Don't make me tell you again."

The dark menace in his voice would have made any other cringe, but it didn't surprise him to see Selima continue toward him, arms still outstretched. Before she could reach him, her husband drew her back, arrowing an admonishing glare toward the male upsetting his tenderhearted mate.

Antoiyn Grooden placed a comforting hand over his wife's while his other hand furtively sketched a powerful protection rune in the air. "She means no harm, Wylder."

Elias snorted, an imp of adversity temping him to burn a rune of his own into the air. He resisted, knowing the situation was already hot enough. "Stand down, Grooden. I mean her no harm." He enjoyed teasing the stuck-up, tight-assed older male, and a toothy grin curled his lips as he continued to bait the powerful mage. "As if any signing of yours could stop my magick if I were inclined to --"

"Oh, for the goddess' sake, Wylder, cut out all the dramatics and just tell us what happened with the girl. We put you in charge of seeing to her graduation exercises, and now no one can find a trace of her. It's as if she fell off the face of the earth. So, what did you do... kill her?"

Horrified silence cloaked the room's occupants in the aftermath of the daring outburst made by Westerner's mate, until the silence shattered under the bark of Wylder's involuntary laughter. Only Judith would actually come out and say something like that to me! How could I have ever fucked this mentally blonde airhead?

Oh, well, he reasoned a second later, chuckling and shaking his head, my cock didn't give a fuck about her absent thought processes...

His grudging amusement over her customary no-clue-ism gradually faded as his night-dark eyes touched on each of the mated pairs, noting with disdain how they had drawn back, distancing themselves from poor Judith and the anticipated backlash of his anger.

Wylder's black eyes flashed, a grimace drawing his mouth tight. "Look at you, presenting as small a target as possible, pretending you aren't frightened enough to piss yourselves." He taunted them, not bothering to hide his disgust at his fellow council members. "None save Selima and Judith have the courage to speak their minds, let alone meet my gaze." He snorted, mouth curling up in a mocking half smile when even the Elven pair -- next in power to him -- refused to acknowledge his derision. "Judith may not have enough sense to fill a thimble, but apparently she and Selima are the only ones in these chambers with any balls."

Like a caged beast, he paced the parquet floor, running agitated hands through his shoulder-length mass of dense, black hair. Turning on his audience, he shouted, "What has this council come to? Once, this body of rulers stood for something. Now all I see is a pathetic group of cowards. Is this all that remains of the mighty Council of Magick? Well, you need an infusion of new blood. You need me!"

"Not yet, we don't," Lemuel snapped, face distorted with a mix of jealousy, envy and fear. "You don't get to take control of this council until you are mated."

"Meanwhile," Grooden interrupted, smoothly bringing the conversation back on track, "you were telling us about Lady Maganistus --"

"No Lady until she receives her wand, Chairperson Grooden," someone reminded him.

"As for what happened with Lady Maganistus --" The emphasis on the title did not go unnoted by Wylder's listeners. "-- I supervised her graduation, which she passed with glowing expertise. I left her sleeping, recuperating from the rite. When I returned, I found she had escaped."

"Escaped? Why did she need to escape? She was a graduate, not a prisoner."

"What did she do... better yet, what did you do?"

The memory of what he had done made his cock, never totally quiescent since that long ago evening, swell to painful hardness. Wylder chose his words with care, his rebellious thoughts running in counterpoint. "In my judgment, she was too powerful to risk with just anyone, so I chose to personally supervise the ceremony." And I didn't want any Warlock's cock in her but mine!

All hell was breaking loose down in the New York street ten stories below. Gunfire sounded in a continuous pop pop pop, sounding thin and harmless at this distance. The way the NYPD cops huddled behind their cars revealed just how far from harmless it really was. They were outgunned all to hell by eight men with M-30s who strolled up and down the sidewalk in front of the bank, firing as if they were at a shooting range, not bothering to take cover at all. Didn't need to. The robbers were wearing military grade body armor, designed as protection against weapons a hell of a lot more powerful then the cops' handguns.

Luckily, our armor was better. And we hit harder.

Thing was, they had a hostage. Bank teller, or maybe a customer. The leader held her with an arm around her neck while he shot around her one handed. The woman screamed once, thin and high, like a rabbit being killed.

I could almost taste her terror. We had to get her out before they blew her brains all over the street.

Saving people is the whole point of the FBI Special Services unit. We get called in when hostages are in imminent danger and the cops are afraid rescue is impossible.

"Well, this is a Charlie Foxtrot," Feral drawled, using the Marine expression for another Marine expression: cluster fuck. "Saving that hostage is going to be a bitch, Cap."

"I'll get her," I told him. "You distract the asshole brigade." And try not to lose your frickin' mind. I didn't say that, though. Thanks to the Desert Warrior program, it wasn't something he could really control. Besides, three tours of duty in the 'Stans, two as Black Ops, had left Feral with some serious issues.

I keyed my throat mic to broadcast on the cops' frequency. "Fox and Feral, coming in. Hold your fire."

Feral leaped, a perfect, flat dive out into space. I tried not to watch the flex of his ass under the dragon scales, but it's one hell of a view, and I'm a girl who loves a fine male behind. But then, everything Feral's got is fine.

As he shot his line at one streetlamp, I aimed my fist at another and sent a mental message through my armor. The thin, high tensile line shot out of my wrist unit, and its weighted end swung around the light support. I gave it a tug. It held, so I ordered the line to retract and leaped off the roof of the ten-story building. Any normal human would have been street pizza, but neither of us had been completely human in years.

The top secret military program we'd volunteered for in 2032 had altered our DNA, increasing our endurance as well as the strength of our muscles and the density of our bones. We were now six times as strong as a human the same size and gender. And considering how damned big Feral was, that's saying something.

Being a hell of a lot smaller, I'm nowhere near as strong as he is. But I'm fast, and agile, and I know how to use what I've got.

The line jerked me down toward the streetlamp. For a moment, it was like flying -- a breathtaking swoop through empty air, the ground careening toward my face. If I mistimed the release, they'd have to hose me off the side of the bank.

Christ, I loved this.

My timing was dead on. The line stopped retracting at my command, and I swung upward, slowing my plunge just enough. I released the line at the top of the arc and went free fall, tucking into a ball to hit the ground rolling. The impact jarred my teeth even through ten layers of Titan Laminate helmet and an inch of anti-concussive gel.

I bounced to my feet. There were two thugs between me and the guy with the hostage, so I threw myself into a roundhouse and kicked one robber right behind the ear. His helmet cracked under my Titan-cored boot, and he fell like a bag of wet cement. I glimpsed a figure whirling toward me and drove my elbow into his throat, not quite hard enough to crush his larynx. He choked and collapsed, more interested in breathing than giving me shit.

I raced to the hostage's captor, snapped one booted foot up and kicked the bastard right in the back of his thigh. Crack! He went down with a howl, dropping his gun to grab for his broken leg. Greenstick fracture, given the way I'd hit him. Served the fucker right.

I hauled the hostage up from where she'd fallen in a heap with her captor, pushed her ahead of me, then bent to scoop up the jackass's gun. "Go, go, go!"

She looked back, saw my facemask, and screamed like a horror trid blonde.

"I'm a federal agent!" I yelled at her. "Get your ass moving!"

She ran, skittering on her high heels as best she could. I galloped behind her, one hand on her shoulder as I sought to both steady her and shield her with my body.

Hey, I was wearing full body armor. She was wearing JC Penney.

Something that felt like a Volvo rammed me in the ribs. The impact spun me around and dropped me. My head hit the pavement with a meaty melon thunk, and stars exploded behind my eyes. When the pretty lights faded, I saw the girl get snatched behind a patrol car by a long, blue-clad arm.

I couldn't breathe. My chest felt paralyzed.

"Fox!" Feral shouted in my ear on our com frequency, but when I tried to answer, my frozen diaphragm still refused to budge.

He made a weird growling sound, building to a howl that might have been my name. Oh fuck, he's gone berserker.

"It's a shame we have to leave this gorgeous island." Trina sighed, stretching out on the beach, letting the sun's rays tickle her body with their warmth.

Bayoh dropped a light kiss on her stomach. "I'll miss Chimera as well, but we've been absent from Laiocean for two weeks now. Our people are probably wondering when we're coming back." He chuckled.

"Of course they know we'll be back. Word was sent last week, but you so convincingly persuaded us to stay another week," Roar added.

"As if you're complaining. Besides, the first week didn't count." Trina pouted.

Roar lifted his blond head, his aquamarine eyes staring at her with confusion. "How do you mean?"

"Well, I spent most of the week fighting what I felt for the three of you so I didn't completely enjoy the full experience of the island," she reasoned.

Roar ran his hand along the expanse of her stomach. "You're gorgeous," he murmured. "Hmm, perhaps you didn't enjoy the first half of the vacation, but there were no complaints at night."

Trina giggled. "Yes, I suppose you're right. You guys gave me nothing to complain about at night. Speaking of which, shouldn't we go back to our bungalow if we're going to take this any further?"

Bayoh nuzzled her neck. "You're ready to fuck again?"

She shivered. Talh moved to her feet and began to kiss her ankles. Roar moved closer and fondled her breasts with large skilled hands. "We can't do this right here in the middle of the beach. Anyone could just walk up on us," she moaned, despite the delicious sensations coursing through her body.

"This is our private stretch of beach, remember?" Roar grinned, trailing his fingers along her stomach again.

Trina sighed, arching her back against their touches. She couldn't remember a time when she'd been this content. Her heart swelled with love for these three gorgeous hunks. Each had his own distinct personality. Roar was the lighthearted one and often the spokesperson for the group. He made her laugh and realize that life didn't always have to be so serious.

Bayoh was fiery. He shot straight from the hip and his directness sometimes took her breath away. He was a man's man. He had a way of making her feel like a woman. Then there was Talh. Though quiet and often serious, he was the most sensitive of the three. The intensity of his aqua gaze left her panting. He was always tender and gentle with her.

If someone had told her a few weeks ago that she'd fall in love with three men, she'd have laughed, especially since Trina had sworn off men after finding her live-in boyfriend in bed with her best friend. Her best male friend.

Her mind briefly drifted to Tim of the golden skin and long dreadlocks. He was handsome, and a good lay, but a good-for-nothing bum who apparently was also bi-sexual. She'd threatened to cut off his penis after catching him in bed with Twan. The last time she'd seen him, he was running buck naked out of her house. He was probably doing okay now. His kind always managed to land on their feet.

That didn't matter anymore. She'd be starting a new life with three men she was madly in love with. At times it was scary to think about how she'd fallen so hard and fast for them. She was still trying to reconcile the fact that they weren't human and actually beings called Manani, a people whose natural form was leonine.

It frightened her when they'd shifted in front of her for the first time, so after that one night they'd stayed in their humanoid form. It was something she'd grow used to in time, but for now she was happy to see them as two-legged men rather than four-legged cats.

Trina would miss this magical island that had brought them together. Who would have thought the free vacation would actually turn out so wonderfully? When she'd received a letter in the mail stating that she won a free vacation, Trina smelled a rat. People like her didn't win free vacations, not without a catch. Normally she would have thrown the letter away and not given it another thought, but because her life had been in disarray at the time of its arrival, she'd called the number in a weak moment.

She'd booked the vacation and was told she'd only have to take a survey at the end to tell the people in charge what she thought of the island. Things had been great in the beginning and she actually began to take the place at face value. The island was gorgeous, the staff courteous, and her accommodations were something right out of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

Then she began seeing things that just weren't supposed to be, like winged people, talking animals, men who looked like elves. That's when she knew Chimera was no ordinary island. Around the time of this discovery was when she met Roar, Bayoh, and Talh. They'd pursued her relentlessly until she lost the will to run.

The fact that they had tails didn't register until she'd already fallen under their spell. She smiled as she remembered that first night with them. It had certainly been something to remember.

Bayoh lifted one dark brow, his lips twisted in amusement. "What do you find so funny?"

Trina's smile widened, her eyes locking with his. "I'm just thinking of our first night together. You three probably thought I was a little bit crazy."

"Not crazy, just confused. We could hardly expect you not to be apprehensive as you've never known one of our kind before." Roar trailed his hand over her hot skin, his fingertips resting just above the top of her bikini bottom. Trina sucked in her breath in anticipation. She wanted to feel his fingers on and inside her pussy.

Obviously reading her actions correctly, Roar cocked his blond head to the side, a grin splitting his face when he undid the ties on her bikini bottom. Talh kissed and massaged her feet and ankles while Bayoh bent his dark head to nuzzle one throbbing breast with the side of his face.

"Oh, my goodness," she moaned, wanting more.

Roar pulled her bikini bottom away, leaving Trina naked from the waist down. Her body shook with desire. She had to bite her lower lip to stop herself from screaming, not wanting someone to hear them.

"Don't hold anything back, Trina. Scream for us if you want," Talh whispered. A lock of dark red hair fell over his forehead as he ran his lips along the side of her calves.

"This may be a private beach, but what if someone heard us?" She groaned, finding it hard to concentrate when Roar's hand was steadily inching toward her damp slit.

"So what? Let them. They'll know without a doubt that you belong to us."

Neither Madison nor Brody can fight their lust or deny their love, but hell is out to get him. When everyone close to him, especially his destined mate, is targeted by eight generations of Blazewood demons, the only way to fight evil is with evil.

Madison stared at the tattoo inked on her skin from mid-thigh to just above her hip. She'd wanted something for herself that she could enjoy in private but conceal at work. Actually, one of her coworkers had recommended this particular tattoo artist. Rumor had it that the woman possessed magical powers, and her tattoos reflected the image of the wearer's destined mate. That story, which had at first intrigued Madison, now frightened her. If the rumor held true, then her destined mate was... not quite human.

Though handsome, with a strong jaw and a well-defined nose, his wide-set eyes had an almost supernatural glow. The faint smile on his finely shaped lips revealed his needle-sharp teeth. His buzzed haircut exposed the pointed tips of his ears.

If this man -- or monster -- were real, she wondered what other bestial characteristics he possessed, for the tattoo only showed his face.

"You like it?" asked the tattoo artist.

Madison glanced at the dark-skinned woman with wild black hair and eyes so intense they looked almost inhuman as well.

"He's... beautiful. In a weird way, that is," Madison replied. "You know what's weirdest of all? It didn't really hurt. With my other tattoos I always felt something, but this --"

"It's my technique," the artist replied and turned away. Madison thought she heard the woman whisper, "The pain will come later."

Once again Madison stared at her tattoo. This was certainly an interesting start to her vacation.

First stop, the crazy tattoo artist. Next stop, a peaceful town in the mountains of New England. Hiking. Shopping in quaint little stores. Lounging among the smooth rocks in a cool stream on a hot summer day.

Madison could hardly wait.

* * *

"Here you are, hon," said the gray-haired lady clad in a salmon-colored jogging suit and sneakers. Though elderly, the owner of the bed-and-breakfast where Madison had decided to stay had a lot of spunk. She continued, "This room is one of my best. You have your own private bath and a nice view of town."

Madison walked to the window framed by cream-colored lace curtains and gazed out. From here she could see the old-fashioned post office and the steeple of the little white church. In the gazebo that stood in the center of the park, a local country band played to a small crowd. Madison heard the twang of the guitar through the half open window. Though she wasn't a fan of country, the music enhanced the atmosphere of this New Hampshire town.

Beyond the town stood mountains covered in trees -- fantastic woods for hiking. Madison could scarcely wait to get out there.

Her gaze drifted toward a winding road that stretched out of town and disappeared into the forest. A few miles into the trees stood an enormous stone house seemingly dropped in a clearing. "Wow, look at that place," Madison said. "It's huge. How many wings does it have?"

The woman's easy smile faded. "I'm not sure. No one in town ever goes there. The owner is... well, take my advice, hon, and stay as far from that place as possible. There are no public hiking trails over there, anyway."

"I wouldn't trespass," Madison said. Not in a town like this. She pictured a roughneck wearing hunting camouflage and toting a shotgun running her off his property.

"Just keep to the trails on the east side, and you'll be fine. You're all alone?"

"Yes. I wanted some peace and quiet."

"Well, there's a young couple staying here, and they're into hiking and camping. It might be a good idea to get friendly with them. Walking through the woods alone isn't a smart idea."

"Thanks, Miss Jefferson, but I'm used to doing things on my own."

"Suit yourself, hon."

"Just out of curiosity, who owns that big house in the woods?"

A look of apprehension crossed her face before she replied softly, "His name is Brody Blazewood. His family founded this town in 1675. He's the last of his line."

Ah. A cranky old man, then. No wonder everyone avoided his house.

"Miss Jefferson, where do you recommend going for lunch around here?"

"Heidi's Diner. When you step out the front door, turn left and it's about a quarter of a mile down the road."

* * *

After unpacking, Madison freshened up in the bathroom, then left Miss Jefferson's large old Victorian and headed for the diner. On the way, she stopped at the drug store for chewing gum. Walking through the door, she glanced down at her handbag and accidentally bumped into the person stepping out of the store.

"Excuse me," she said, moving away from a broad chest covered by a tan T-shirt snug enough to show off the chiseled pecs beneath. Wow. This body sure caught her attention. She tilted her gaze up toward a handsome, angular face accented by dark gold five-o'clock shadow. Wide-set blue eyes stared back at her. A jolt darted through her when she realized this guy resembled her tattoo -- except he was obviously human. No glowing eyes, needle teeth or pointed ears. A dusting of sandy hair covered his scalp, and the urge to touch it to find out if it was soft or rough almost overcame her.

"Sorry," he said.

They moved simultaneously to the left, then to the right in a misguided attempt to step out of each other's way. A faint smile on his lips, he took a step back and extended his arm for her to pass.

"Thank you," she said.

He nodded. His eyes blinked slowly, and the tip of his tongue moistened his lips. A little thrill shot through her, and her gaze again dropped to his chest, then lower to his long, lean legs encased in faded denim. Damn, this guy was gorgeous. He even had an eye-catching bulge in the front of his jeans.

Once again, she met his gaze and, after a lingering moment, he left the store.

"Blazewood was in for his monthly visit," said a hushed female voice from behind the prescription pick-up counter.

Madison glanced toward the young, auburn-haired woman who stretched over the counter, staring after the hunk who'd just left. Blazewood? No way. That athletic stud was the cranky old man from the mountain mansion?

Doug locked the door to the Wishes Gone Wrong department behind him, sighing as he ducked his head to miss the bare light bulb hanging in the broom closet. Yesterday, that door had opened onto the rooftop garden. The building was forever morphing in an attempt to lock down the vagrant Wishes Gone Wrong department, but ever since that one bad wish had escaped years ago, the department just didn't seem to want to stay put.

Last Thursday, he'd entered his office through the fourth floor canteen, and when he'd clocked out that evening he'd found himself in the Ladies powder room five floors above. While he'd appreciated the rare insight into the feminine stronghold, the ladies had not been amused. If it weren't for his stellar security clearance, and his ability to hack into every known system on the planet, and a few farther out in the galaxy, he'd be out looking for a new job right now.

As it was, he was on his way to the biggest Sci-Fi convention in the known universes to rescue a luscious lady named Jenna from a wish gone very, very wrong. He felt a contented smile curve the corner of his mouth. Nothing like a good old-fashioned brawl to start the weekend off right

* * *

Jenna eyed up the green-skinned alien, making sure to keep a healthy distance between them. Maybe she should have been a little more specific when she'd wished for a lover with stamina. Like, maybe she should have specified that he be a nice male, a nice human male. She'd never met a demon, but this character seemed to fit the description. He had the horns, the fiery red eyes, and that total lack of consideration for anything anyone else said.

"Go away. I have no intention of going back to your place, wherever that might be." She had a sinking feeling his place might be in a whole other dimension. Taking another step backward, she felt the cold cement of the wall behind her. "This is one huge mistake."

The monster roared something unintelligible and stomped his big green foot. Glowering at her with those demonic eyes, he moved sideways, cutting off her escape route. If the drool dripping from the side of his mouth was any indication, he might be planning to make a snack out of her.

She snuck a look past him, hoping someone would notice the big green alien and come to her rescue. Unfortunately, at the biggest Sci-Fi convention on the known worlds an alien really didn't stick out the way he would on Saville Row or at the opening of a new play on Broadway. She sighed, flicking the safety on her tazer to the off position as she pulled it from the top of her knee-high boots. Sometimes a girl just had to get mean.

"What will it take to convince you that I'm not going anywhere with you?" She brandished the tazer in front of her, hoping it held a big enough charge. She didn't recall "oversized alien demon" being one of the settings. "Now run along and play nice with the Trekkies."

"Oh, I love a gal with her own tazer."

Jenna started at the sound of a deep voice to her left. Keeping a wary eye on her would-be suitor, she turned her head enough to see the owner of the voice. Nice!

She'd always had this fantasy about a high-tech cop, and the man grinning at her from beneath his vintage twentieth century helmet certainly looked like he could live up to it. The skintight blue uniform did nothing to hide his broad shoulders and a massive chest that narrowed to lean hips and a very nicely shaped butt. He took off the helmet and ran his fingers through his hair. The red streaks in his dark hair gave him that bad boy look that sent her pulse racing. She licked her lips in appreciation. Now why couldn't her wish have conjured up someone like him?

If he managed to keep up with her, she might just let him replace Green Fuzzy here as her evening entertainment. That touch of alien blood her mother had gifted her with meant most human males had a hard time walking away once she was satisfied -- not because they found her irresistible, but because they were just plumb worn-out.

Actually, she recalled a few of them running away screaming. Seems human men were really spooked by a girl who kept asking for more sex, especially after the first couple of hours. Still, this one looked like he might be fun while he lasted. She gave him her best come-hither grin and sidestepped as the monster made a grab for her arm.

He replaced his helmet. "I don't think that's a costume. Greenie here looks like one of the Tra'toni from the Jupiter colony."

Definitely a southern drawl. A trickle of heat warmed her belly. "I really don't care," Jenna snorted. "When I wished for a male to amuse me, I kind of had a human male in mind."

"Should be more careful what you wish for, then." The man slid out of the path of the monster, landing a nasty chop in the small of its furry back as it stumbled past him.

Jenna rolled her eyes. "Hindsight and platitudes. Just what I needed."

Megan's late again, and David is getting tired of waiting on her. However, Megan and her roommates Jared and Michael are going to make it up to David in a big way. They're hoping he'll level up his domestic situation and join them in a never-ending foursome.

When next he awakened, the clock on the bedside table read ten minutes before midnight. Frustration and anger rose in David, but he didn’t know what to do about it. For the moment, they were both stuck in dead-end, poverty-level jobs. He’d been offered a position in The Sphinx Hotel’s famous Amarna restaurant after graduation, but he’d still be the lowest chef on the roster for at least another couple of years. There was nothing to be done until they could afford the tax penalties of pairing off. He might as well go home and beat off in the shower.

The vid screen blared a little loudly, playing some Jazz Era hits from the cable company’s selection of music channels. Dave wondered if Jared and Michael had come back early. They often curled up on the couch together to read while listening to music and then fell asleep there. No matter what, they’d get a notice from the property manager’s office for noise violation if they left the music up that high. Dave tiptoed toward the screen’s control panel. He’d just turn down the sound a notch or two on his way out, and then leave. Quietly, so as not to disturb them if they were asleep, Dave crept softly over the carpeted dining area, then froze in his tracks.

On the floor, Michael and Jared were busily pleasuring one another in a mutual sixty-nine. Naked, with the lights of the fractals on the screen reflecting off their bodies, both men were even more beautiful than he’d thought possible.

At first, Dave didn’t know what to do. The front door was across the living room, and he’d have to step over them to make it to the door. He could of course return to Megan’s room and simply wait there, but he didn’t do that, either. His boots seemed rooted to the floor, his eyes glued to the tableau in front of him.

Dave stood fighting his morals and the wish to give the men he’d begun to call friends the privacy they deserved. Instead, he wanted to watch. He licked his lips. Maybe more. He mentally slapped himself.

Sure, they should have been doing the nasty back in their own bedroom instead of out on the floor of the living room, but Dave understood how sometimes location didn’t matter when things got hot. Really, how easy was it to forget Megan could be home at any moment and that Dave had been asleep on Megan’s bed? Well, okay, maybe they’d never checked the back bedrooms. They were going to have to bolt like a pair of rabbits for the room just as soon as they heard Megan keying in her entrance code.

However, Dave continued to stand right in the entrance to the hall, blocking their way to the bedrooms of the apartment. His gaze remained riveted on the two of them, and his feet refused to listen to the fading voice of his morals demanding weakly for him to go back down the hall. The sight of Jared and Michael giving each other the slow suck, tenderly teasing each other, gave Dave one hell of a woody.

Jared was on top, as usual. He was the more aggressive and outgoing of the pair, cocksure of what he wanted in life and how to get it. His short brown curls winked in the lights of the fractals on the screen, and in time to the slow, moody beat of the jazz. Why hadn’t Dave ever noticed how the dude was in shape, with not one ounce of spare fat on him? Even his ass was smooth and firm. Jared lifted his head to suck slowly upward until his lover moaned beneath him.

Michael was almost sleekly feminine, especially when his longer blond hair was spread out on the carpet like a sacrificial maiden or something. Dave felt a kinship with Michael, who was a professional baker. While Michael mainly made the breads for the bakery, at home he often indulged his artistic side with decorated cakes worthy of weddings and events. Even now, his long, delicate fingers kneaded Jared’s ass until Dave could see the pink-brown hole pucker before Michael’s hands manipulated the smooth globes closed over it again in an erotic game of peek-a-boo.

Hell, Dave wasn’t innocent of the games men played. He’d indulged once or twice during those adolescent explorations in school. Girls were more his thing, but Dave couldn’t deny that he’d enjoyed himself. Dave’s hand crept over to rub his hard-on through his jeans. Megan was good, but even without experiencing the blow job himself, Dave knew Jared was an expert. Michael was no slouch at the sword-swallow routine, either. Dave just forgot one thing. From where Dave stood, his reflection would show up on the glass of the screen, clear as day.

Jared lifted his head from Michael’s cock with a soft pop. His green eyes glittered in the reflected light of the fractals as they exploded and changed to the next song before they focused on Dave over his shoulder. “If you want to watch, then you might as well come in and make yourself comfortable.” There was no malice or hurt anger in his tone, just a mild amusement, like he’d just invited Dave to dinner instead of a peep show.

Dave’s face heated up, so he knew he blushed like a girl. This was worse than being caught by his mother looking at porn on the vid. Mom had laughed at him and cuffed him for not having the protections set higher, but Dave had still been caught literally with his pants down. This time wasn’t much better. “I’m ah… well, um… Sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude. I was waiting for Megan and um…”

Michael released Jared’s cock from his mouth and gave it a lick before rolling his head back until his chin rested between Jared’s balls.

Dave wondered what having a five o-clock shadow rubbing your sack felt like and got harder. Then Dave realized he’d started to rub himself again and snatched his hand away like his zipper was on fire.

The distinguished looking gentleman held the thin card she'd spritzed with French perfume to his nose, and smiled with a glint in his mysterious eyes. "Perfect. I'll take it," he said. Sheila Jones loved his sexy, dark gray eyes, and she could have tumbled headlong into them.
Until she saw Farrow Kincaid. As usual, there was a beautiful, young girl on his arm. Miles' Department Store held an account in his wealthy family's name, and Farrow had taken to coming in every week with his newest conquest. He'd barely noticed Sheila each time he'd waltzed up to the counter and bought his escort a bottle of expensive perfume. What will it be today?
His form fitting gray T-shirt couldn't disguise his athletic build; the jeans did nothing to conceal thigh muscles that bunched with each step he took toward the counter. Her cheeks grew warm as she made a futile attempt to pull her eyes away from the glorious bulge at his crotch. Cream slid into her panties as she envisioned the wet head of his cock slipping into her pussy. A dream she'd inexplicably had for months now. Mentally shaking herself, she refocused on the gentleman at the counter. "Would you like it gift-wrapped, sir?"
Before the man answered, the pink box was swiped from the counter by the girl on young Kincaid's arm. "This is it. It's the one I want."
"Then it's yours, baby." Farrow's deep blue eyes peered in the girl's direction.
Sheila watched him rake a slender hand through his perfectly styled black hair, wondering how it would feel tangled in hers. His lips curved into a smile that made her body tremble. What havoc those lips could create on... Get a grip! "Sorry, it's the last one. Our new shipment arrives tomorrow."
The girlfriend whined like a banshee. "Farrow, make her give it to me!"
Sheila reached for the box and pulled it from the girl's hand. "We'll have more tomorrow."
Farrow wedged between the banshee and the gentleman and, reaching across the glass case, he gently peeled Sheila's fingers from around the box. Without making eye contact with her, he looked at the man. "Pops, do you mind if I take it?" He nodded with a smile in the direction of the pretty girl. "I'm sure you understand." Finally, he glanced at Sheila, who stared back with her mouth open. "Order it for him, charge it to the Kincaid account, and we're all good here, right?"
"Excuse me..." The insolent little prick! Actually, that was the only part of him that wasn't little. The type of girls he paraded around showcased his pea-sized brain though, and the fact he only thought with one head -- the swollen one belonging to his cock. Ooh, she was mad as hell. Madder than she should have been because for months now she'd wanted that prick and his cock. What was it about him? It certainly wasn't his manners that attracted her.
The older man stopped her. "One day won't matter." His hair, a little long, was dark, feathered throughout with gray.
Sheila didn't understand why she wanted to run her fingers through it. "I'll take your number and call you the minute our shipment arrives."
"There's no hurry."
What was happening to her? Two men, as different as night and day, stood in front of the glass counter. One was older, mysterious-looking, and if Farrow hadn't walked up, their conversation might have ended differently. Farrow was a jaw-dropping, gorgeous young jackass. Her body went all wonky. Shit, maybe she was going through the change or something. At this rate, she'd need to go to the lingerie department and buy new panties. Standing there, staring back and forth at both men, Sheila had an orgasm. The seat of the underwear she wore grew warm, sticky. Good lord! She couldn't get the charge slip for Farrow's signature to print fast enough.
Returning the pen, his fingers lingered on hers. "Bet you'd be hot in the sack."
"You... you arrogant bastard!"
Farrow strolled off, leaving his young lady at the counter. Her brown eyes shot daggers at Sheila before she stalked off.
Sheila jumped at the sound of the gentleman's voice. "Ahh, youth. So misspent on the young." He touched her hand and said, "No need to call. I'll have someone pick it up." Now his eyes appeared black. He gazed at her before he handed her a business card. "Don't be afraid to embrace life."
The phone buzzed and pulled her attention away; when she looked back, he was gone. Sheila read the card, absently rubbing the tingling spot where the man had touched her hand. Tavoro Sands Resort, Suva City, Fiji. Beneath that was printed a name: Mr. Obsidian. When she turned the expensive card over, there were three words: At Your Service, followed by a phone number.
"I'm not afraid."

The darkness rolled in like dark clouds in a thunderstorm. The inky black night surrounded me, wrapped me in its embrace. It had been a month since "the incident" had happened, and while it might seem minor to some, it was the final nail in my coffin. I had tried to carry on, but I couldn't take another thing life had to throw my way. If I'd been able to afford a psychologist, I'm sure he would have diagnosed me with some fancy term and prescribed me a bottle of pills. Instead, I was taking matters into my own hands.
The hair on the back of my neck stood on end, letting me know I wasn't alone. I knew I should be afraid, yet I wasn't. I couldn't bring myself to care enough to be frightened. The numbness had spread through me, leaving nothing but emptiness inside of me, a large echoing cavern that I couldn't fill.
I felt a puff of breath against my skin. A chill raced down my spine as my eyes stared sightlessly ahead, the dark impenetrable. I didn't know what was to come, but I stood stoically, waiting to see what would happen. It couldn't be any worse than what I had planned for myself.
Soft lips trailed down my neck to my shoulder. Teeth softly brushed against my skin. I felt a small prick against my neck, and then warmth spread through me. I closed my eyes, a sigh on my lips. Whatever was happening, it felt right. Arms encircled my waist as they pulled me against a tall, hard body. Muscles bulged in the arms that held me gently. A lover's embrace.
Fluid trailed down my neck, and my captor lapped it up like a kitten drinking milk. "So sweet," said a husky voice that left chills on my flesh.
"Who are you?" I whispered.
"It doesn't matter."
He turned me to face him. I looked up into fathomless gray eyes, the color of a winter morning, set in a pale face. He had a long, elegant nose that led to full lips. Shaggy brown hair fell past his shoulders.
When he smiled, I saw canines that were long and pointed. Vampire, my mind said, but I shook the thought away. Vampires weren't real. My hand drifted to my neck, and I felt the two small pinpricks. A breath caught in my throat as I stared up at him in surprise. Or were they?
"You're a vampire," I heard myself say in a quiet voice filled with wonder.
"Yes." He watched me intently, probably expecting me to scream at any moment. And had I been anyone else, I might have. But a woman willing to die was another matter altogether.
I tipped my head to the side, exposing my neck to him once more. "Do it. Go ahead and end it."
He looked puzzled and slightly taken aback. "Do what?"
"Bite me. End my life."
He shook his head and looked exasperated. "Silly creature, why would I want to end your life? I feed to live, not to kill."
To my humiliation, I felt tears gather in my eyes and slip silently down my cheeks. "Please," I begged. "I can't go on living this way. I'm tired of feeling empty."
I felt his intense stare as if he could see right through me. I wondered how long it would take to make a decision. Did I not taste good? Was there something wrong with my blood? Or was there just something wrong with me?
"Why do you feel empty?" he finally asked.
"If I knew, I wouldn't feel this way. I only see shades of gray and darkness. When I wake up, all I want to do is close my eyes and sleep until another day has passed. I go through the motions, smile at people when I should, but it's all meaningless. Inside I feel like there's a void, a giant black hole in the middle of my soul sucking the life right out of me." It wasn't that I wanted to feel the way I did. I just hadn't had a reason to be happy.
He grinned. "So you have a vampire in your soul?"
I hadn't really thought of it that way, but it made a sort of crazy sense to me. "Yeah, I guess I do."
His long fingers reached out and stroked my jaw. "You're too beautiful to die."
Beautiful? Me? I wanted to laugh, but also wanted to cry. I couldn't remember the last time someone had seen me as beautiful. I certainly didn't see myself that way. When I looked in the mirror, I saw nondescript brown hair, plain brown eyes, and average facial features. I saw a body that was too plump to be fashionable, rounded in more places than it should be. What was beautiful about me?
He stared into my eyes as if reading my thoughts. And perhaps he could. Before I knew what he was doing, he leaned forward and brushed his lips against mine. They were petal soft and chilled to the touch. His mouth moved over mine, coaxing me to join in his dance.
A spark ignited inside me, a small, glowing ember. Warmth spread through my soul and, for the first time in years, I was happy to be alive. This dangerous, deadly, gorgeous man made me feel more alive than any of my family had in a long time. Nothing in this world had felt half as right as being kissed by him. It amazed me how I could feel so much in just one kiss. It wasn't like I hadn't been kissed before, because I had, but the vampire's kiss put all the others to shame. With just one kiss, he pushed aside my thoughts of killing myself. I'd come to the cavern so no one would find me. I knew my landlady wouldn't be able to handle finding a dead body. She was sweet, and I didn't want to do that to her. And I didn't have any friends to speak of. Just an ex who kept showing up repeatedly, no matter how many times I pushed him away.
With just one kiss, the vampire had given me a gift. The gift of hope. I'd felt bleak and hopeless for so long that I'd forgotten what it felt like to want to live. But with one kiss, he'd given all that back to me and more. As if he were a drug, I found that I wanted more. Kissing him was the equivalent of basking in the sunlight.
His hands cradled my face, and he pulled back. "How could someone so precious feel so sad? How can you not know your worth?"
I wanted to speak, but found I had lost my voice. Tears clogged my throat and burned my eyes. A man who by definition specialized in death and destruction, a vampire, thought I was worth something. A man who could kill me at any moment, yet instead had chosen to kiss me. At that moment, I knew that I would do whatever he asked of me, and I would do it willingly, if only he would kiss me again.
"What do you want with me?" I asked softly. He was watching me intently, but I couldn't tell what he was thinking or feeling. I wanted to pull him closer, to rest my head on his shoulder and have him tell me that everything would be all right. For once, I wanted someone to take care of me. I'd struggled for far too long on my own, and I was tired -- mentally, physically and emotionally tired. He was strong, and I wanted to borrow some of that strength if even just for a moment or two.
He caressed my cheek and smiled sadly. "I want to take away your sorrow and give you light. But how can a man who hasn't seen the sun in over a hundred years give such a gift to anyone?"
"You could kiss me again." I blushed, the bold words having slipped from my mouth before I could stop them. I'd never felt so brazen in my life, but it felt good.

Niall slid silently from the bed, cursing his lack of a weapon. Someone was on Vivian's balcony. He could hear a single heartbeat. He reached out with his mind, but whoever it was had shields too thick for him to break without giving himself away. The balcony door slid open. Niall stepped into the living room, cloaking himself. No human would be able to see him now. Of course, he doubted the intruder was human, but he could always hope.
A tall man stepped into Vivian's apartment.
Niall sprang.
The man captured his wrist in an unbreakable grip. "You could have told me you'd reclaimed your body."
"Ethan." Niall's partner dropped his arm, and Niall stepped back.
Ethan growled. "Why didn't you call me?"
"I needed to regain my strength."
Ethan arched a brow. "Based on your smell and appearance I'd say you needed to fuck someone's brains out."
Niall ran his hand through his ruffled hair. "I would have contacted you as soon as we woke."
"It's not like you to be distracted from a mission."
"After months of being trapped by that bastard I deserve a night to feed and fuck without the Consulate coming down on my ass."
Ethan grinned. "That's true enough. Tell me how you got free."
Niall explained how he'd sent out mental feelers from the story world where he'd been trapped by Lorcan, a wizard so powerful even his band of elite vampire assassins had been unable to capture him after months of trying. Vivian, a romance writer, had been the only one to respond to his calls.
She'd listened to him tell the story of his fight with Lorcan and his capture, thinking he was a character out of her own imagination. When she'd finished writing his tale, the magic of her words brought him back into his body and transported him to her apartment.
Ethan frowned. "When did you return to your self?"
Niall glanced at the clock on the wall. It was nearly 10:00. "About twelve hours ago."
Without warning Ethan lunged for him. Niall countered the attack, blocking Ethan's attempt to smash his jaw. He sent Ethan flying backward with a swift kick.
Ethan held up his hands in surrender.
Niall snarled. "What the fuck was that about?"
"A test. You're back to nearly your full strength."
"You should need days to recover after going so long without feeding. There's something you're not telling me."
"Apparently, I'm stronger than you thought I was." Vivian had restored his energy almost instantly. She responded to him like a Companion, yet even a Companion shouldn't have such power before being Turned. He needed more time to examine their connection before sharing it with anyone, even Ethan.
Ethan growled. "You're lying. We can't afford secrets on this mission."
Lorcan was the greatest threat to their kind Niall had encountered since joining the Protectors. "There is nothing you need to know right now. I'll tell you when I can."
"You'd better."
Niall hoped there would be nothing to tell. The thought of letting Vivian go made his stomach knot, but she didn't deserve to be forced into a bond with him, especially one that linked their lifeforces so closely. He risked his life every day as a Protector, and when a vampire died, his Companion rarely survived.
Ethan stepped back onto the balcony and retrieved a bag. He tossed it at Niall. "Duval expects us at sunset. I brought you some clothes and weapons. You'll get a new phone tonight."
"Damn! I was hoping to avoid him for a bit longer." Like until he figured out whether Vivian really was his Companion or if something even stranger was going on. Companion bonds had become rare in the last few hundred years and he'd never heard of one that formed this fast.
Ethan shook his head. "It's a formal summons. He'll drag you there if you don't come willingly."
He would too. The bastard. "How pissed is he?"
"Well, you did get caught."
"God damn it! Nobody knew Lorcan would be able to suck me into his enchanted book. I'll not be --"
He realized Ethan was laughing at his vehemence. "Fuck you."
"You're the best Protector the Consulate has. The fact that you got caught shows how strong Lorcan really is. We've been unable to locate him since you disappeared. Then last night, Duval sensed you again, and I sensed Lorcan's magic. Vivian breaking his hold on you must have weakened him temporarily. We know where he's hiding."
"Then let's go get him."
"How well did that go last time?"
Niall snarled. "I want the bastard dead."
"As do we all, but this is too big for the two of us. We need Duval. Hell, we may need every last Protector and all the allies we can bring in. We've got a few shifters watching the townhouse he's using for his base. They'll alert us if he leaves."
"This can't wait. We need to go in now."
