Cat Came Back - Adult Excerpt :)

Cat Came Back
Genres: Paranormal. Shape Shifters, Erotic Romance, BBW
Release Date:  Sept 6, 2012
Author: Anne Kane

BLURB:

Cat came back to town, and Jacob plans to keep her there.

When Catherine’s aunt dies in a suspicious accident, she comes back to her hometown to settle the estate. She expects it to be a an easy job, but she doesn’t count on being chased by a pack of wild wolves, and an unknown enemy who sprays grafitti on the house, and throws bricks through her windows. When the local police force is less than helpful it is up to Cat to find out what’s going on with the help of her all too human lover, Jacob.

Known as the Mad Trapper, Jacob has been in love with Cat since high school. Now that she’s back in town he intends to show her that a human-shifter relationship can be just what a were-cat needs to keep her out of trouble.

EXCERPT:

He knew he should be firm, and walk away. She wasn’t in any condition to be making judgment calls or deciding if she wanted to jump into bed with a human. He knew she had a real hang-up about that. Her parents had really done a number on her.

But he wasn’t that strong. Ever since high school, he’d had a thing for Cat. He’d mooned over her in class, secretly following her around town every chance he got. When she’d been injured, he’d relished the chance to take care of her until her leg healed. Then she’d run at the first opportunity, before he’d been able to convince her that all humans weren’t bad.

Cat’s soft breath tickled his ear. “What’s the matter, lover? You know you want me.”

Oh yeah. He definitely wanted her, but on his terms. She needed to know exactly what she was asking for, because there would be no going back. He didn’t just want her for today, he wanted her forever. All he had to do was convince her she wanted that too. He wasn’t sure that was possible. Still, a guy had to start somewhere.

She felt so soft and pliant as he wrapped his arms around her. With a lusty moan, she rolled on top of him, her legs spread wide as she straddled his hips. Her scent filled the air, uniquely hers and edged with a hint of lust. Leaning forward, she pressed her lips on his and he knew he was lost.

She tasted good. So good. He explored every inch of her mouth, his tongue sliding along hers in an erotic invitation. She responded eagerly, starting a sensual duel that sent heat thrumming along every nerve. It had been so long since he’d dared to hope for this. When her family left Hunter’s Canyon he’d thought he would never see her again. He’d held on to the hope that once she matured, she’d return to her roots. Cats were territorial creatures and their shifter brethren even more so.

He nibbled his way down the soft hollow of her throat, enjoying the way she purred her satisfaction. He wanted to brand her with the heat he felt, make her yearn for his touch as much as he yearned for hers. Right now, her inhibitions were lowered, and as much as he knew he shouldn’t take advantage, he was going to do his damnedest to make this a night she’d never forget.

Spanning her waist with his hands, he enjoyed the feel of her soft skin against him. Cat let out a shuddering breath and buried her face in his shoulder. She arched even closer against him, and he gritted his teeth at the exquisite sensation. So soft. So feminine. So very much a woman.

Her sharp teeth sank into his shoulder in a tiny nip that sent shivers of desire down his spine. Heat raced through him, settling in his groin with a heavy sensation. It would be tough to wait, but he wanted to do this right. She deserved the best, and he was going to give it to her if it killed him. And it felt as if it might!

Cat let out a low moan as he wrapped one arm around her and gently flipped her onto her back. He stood for a brief moment, shedding his clothes as fast as he could, not caring where they landed. When he skimmed his shorts down over his thighs, his cock sprang free and Cat sucked in a startled breath. He suppressed a smile. What male didn’t want his mate to salivate at the sight of his aroused shaft?

He leapt back onto the bed and pulled her to him, sucking one perky nipple into his mouth. Damn that tasted good. Scoring his teeth across the tender bud, he felt Cat’s reaction as it puckered into a rosette. Gorgeous! He took his time, playing with each breast in turn. Licking. Teasing. Tasting. He had all the time in the world, and he had no intention of rushing.

Working his way lower, he explored her silken flesh with his hands, mapping every inch of her luscious body. Curves. Feminine curves that sent the blood rushing to his already stiff cock. Her hips. Her buttocks. Her waist. Her thighs. No pencil-thin model with bones sticking out all over the place. His woman was just that. A woman.
He slipped his tongue into the slight indent of her belly button. Licking and nibbling, he explored the curve of her hips and the round expanse of her belly. Cat whimpered and moved restlessly.

“Now. I want you now.” Impatience tinged her voice as he covered her mound with his hand. She bucked her hips against his palm.

“Not yet. I want you to be ready for me.”

“I’m so ready, I’m going to explode.” The words came out in a low moan.

Jacob moved down on the bed and pulled her legs up over his shoulder. Using two fingers, he parted the soft folds guarding her sex. The smell of her juices almost drove him mad, and it took a supreme effort to bring his raging libido under control. Lowering his head, he swiped his tongue in a long slow lick from anus to clit.

“Oh, ye gods!” Cat let out a strangled scream, her whole body arching against his face.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Soul Debt

It's time for another Flash Fiction Theme on the Changling Readers' Loop. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/changelingpress) You can thank Mychael Black for this one. Her FF from the weekend before last spawned this idea. It's time to get back to Changeling's paranormal roots.

- A demon has come collecting a debt. Since you answered the door, guess who gets to pay it. And payment needs to be satisfactory because the late fee is killer.

Flash Fiction rules are simple. Write a quickie -- 100 - 150 words. Writing short is part of the challenge. The hotter the better. Authors AND readers are encouraged to play.

Note: Notice I didn't say "Flash Fiction Weekend." If the fun goes past Sunday, all the better.

October Online Reader Retreat

Love meeting authors and publishers at conferences? Don't have the time (or the small fortune) it takes to attend? In an online community, there's no better place for publishers, authors, and readers to meet than online conferences! No makeup, no airport baggage checks, and no lingering hacking secondhand smokers' cough. Just good fun!
Hospitality Suite: Tuesday October 9th at 6:00pm (Pacific Standard Time). Readers are welcome to stop by!

Changeling blog slot: Friday October 12th at 4:00 Pacific Standard Time -- Feel free to come by and drop in comments!

Demon hunters, oh my

Hey, y'all!

I have this thing for demon hunters. In of fashion or out, I love them. From Van Helsing to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to ghost hunters like Hans Holzer, I like them all.

I love the idea of different demons, different classes of creatures. I even like it when it crosses over into Weird Tales like HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.

What I love the most, though, is the idea of tossing a fairly normal guy out into a world that has all sorts of paranormal creatures. I love giving him a sword and a book of demons and a kit with holy water and salt and saying, "Go forth and be sexy."

That's the idea behind my Keeping Score series. One Up just came out in August, with Rhys and Noah, and with Book 2, featuring Janus and Cillian. These guys just happen to be born to hunt demons, and it's a lonely life, believe me. That's why they defy all the rules to hook up with one another.

Here's a little (UNPROOFED) bit of book 2, , just to make y'all smile

So, what happened, man?”

“To what?”

“To you.” Janus snorted, the sound eerily familiar. “You decide not to shit and went blind instead?”

“That was it. I was bored one day and offered my sight in exchange for a decent blowjob.”

That was about as far from the truth as he could imagine. The truth was he didn’t want to think about what had happened any longer than he had to. That whole burning agony while he’d died and been brought back at least three times? Yeah, not something he liked to remember.

“Oh, well, you always were such a slut.”

“That’s me. Just looking for the next available asshole to fuck me over.” He was approximately eight seconds from utter hysterical meltdown.

“I’m teasing you, asshole.”

Yeah, well, that was the sucky thing about not being able to see facial expressions.

“How much longer until you deliver me wherever you’re delivering me?”

“Oh, baby, we got a long way to go.”

He let the rage pour over him, then he let it go. He’d deal with this, commit whatever chaos he needed to, then find his way back home.

Unlike the rest of these assholes, Cillian had made himself a place.

“I think you might need a hamburger. Maybe if you ate something that wasn’t gator. you’d be less bitchy.”

“That is highly unlikely.” In fact, Cillian was fairly sure he was just at the tip of the iceberg of the nastiness he was going to discover. Soon.

“Will you pull the stick out of your ass already? You think I want to be here?”

“I gave you the opportunity to walk away!” He was considering getting car sick. Not seriously, not yet, but it was bubbling up in him. He avoided cars, unless he was driving.

Of course, when he was driving, everyone avoided him.

“You know very well I can’t. That’s why you’re coming with me.”

They were just going to have this circular argument.

“Can you stop the car?”

To his credit, Janus pulled off right away, the car rolling to a stop.

“Thank you.” He staggered out, stumbling blindly over the asphalt into tall grass, heaving.

“Shit.” Janus murmured quietly behind him, finally coming to hand put a water bottle in his hand.

“Thanks.” He drank deep, swallowing hard, letting the cold water hit his empty belly. It made him queasy again for a few moments, but then the world righted itself and he could breathe again. He sucked in great lungs full of the heavy Florida air, trying to get his shit together.

The ground under his feet rumbled, and Cillian figured either a semi was going to pass soon or a demon was digging his way up from Hell.

Tall, Dark, and Hairy

As a new writer at Changeling, I am so excited to connect with other people who like their characters a bit on the wild side. A lot of readers love a chest off which you could bounce a quarter, but it takes a special kind of reader who likes that chest to belong to something that morphs into a jaguar, or features glowing black alien eyes...

How do you like your heroes? I like big demons with long hair, wicked wolves who nip and kiss. I want  mutant species, cryptids, webbed fingers and flicking tails. Amazonian women who eat men for breakfast (take that any way you like) make my day. And I love that prickle of fear from someone dangerous, someone who could bring both pleasure and pain, delight and death, with a fine line in between.

Of course, I'm open to much, much more. That's where you come in. How about sharing a hot hero or heroine of your own? In your favorite fantasy, with what kind of person (or creature) would you share your night? Maybe it's someone you've already met, or read about here at Changeling; maybe it's a being you'd love to read or write about someday.

Feel free to howl while posting...

2012 Bike MS

From Tony, our Web Developer

With only three weeks until the ride, I want to send a massive thank you to everyone who has donated to this amazing cause. Every dollar - and I really mean that, every single dollar! - makes the miles I'll be riding that much more powerful in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis.

Thank you again for your time and support!
Some info on Multiple Sclerosis:
  • There are approx. 200 new cases diagnosed each week!
  • MS is a progressive disease for which there is not yet a cure.
  • The average age of onset is 30-33 years, but can occur in the early 20's to the late 50's.
  • Because of the varied symptoms of MS, the average time between clinical onset and dianosis is 4-5 years.
  • MS is the most common progressive and disabling neurological condition in young adults.
  • Because MS does not sugnificantly affect life span, those with MS and their families often have to deal with the effects and costs of living with this disease for decades.
There's still time to donate and spread the word! To donate, go to:

TESTING!!!! HELLOOOOOOOO!!!

Apparently, I'm the ONLY one who can post. :D

HUM... maybe this is a good time for Teeka to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!! err... i mean, you know, hop on the blog and cause a little... mischief...

From the Cat's Journal

From the Cat’s Journal

The author says that journaling is good for the soul, so I thought I’d give it a try. My name is Jeffrey, and I am a gorgeous seal-point Himalayan cat, from a long and distinguished bloodline that dates back centuries. Due to a series of unfortunate incidents, I ended up at the local animal shelter where the powers-that-be adopted me out to an author. Not just any author; Anne Kane, an erotic romance author! The indignity of it is crushing.
Not only am I forced to live with an author, but a Jack Russell terror resides in the house as well. And no, that is not a typo; she’s a terror all right. She seems to have the idea in that tiny little head of hers that she is more important to the author than I am. She makes me sleep at the bottom of the bed, and she insists on having the best seat on the sofa, complete with her own little blanket. It’s disgusting.
Right now, I can tell that the Jack Russell is up to no good. Her furry little muzzle is twitching and her ears are pointed straight up. She thinks she’s being clever, but you can’t fool a cat by making puppy dog eyes. I bet she knows where the author hid those cat snacks. To think that I’ve been reduced to competing with a dog for treats!
I can tell that the author is aware of the dog's bad breeding and untrustworthy nature. When the author goes to work, she leaves me in the house, secure in the knowledge that I will behave myself and respect her personal property. She takes the dog with her at all times, and who can blame her? Would you trust a dog alone in your house for hours on end? I think not.
While my captivity is irksome, I have come to accept my lowered station in life. The author obviously needs me to set an example of breeding and decorum for her and the dog. She treats me well enough. I have a nice rug on top of a heating/ vibrating device that massages my fur. I quite enjoy the massage setting. I believe the device is called a dryer although that term does puzzle me. I avoid swimming and bathing at all times, so unless I misjudge the weather I’m rarely in need of being dried.
The author has no such aversion to water. I am intrigued by her habit of creating mounds of bubbles in the large cleaning tub when she bathes. The tub has a wide edge that I patrol to make sure the dog doesn’t interrupt her while she is in the tub, and I can see no useful purpose to these bubbles. They pop and disappear as soon as I touch them with my paw, and yet there are so many that you can’t tell when one or two are missing. Very puzzling.
When the author first brought me home with her, I kept to myself, hiding under furniture and plotting ways to escape and seek out a home more in keeping with my status, but as time went by, I realized that the author truly needed me.
I sit on her desk and make sure she stays awake with well-placed swipes of my paw. I listen to her mumblings as she types, and I’m not shy about vocalizing when I disagree with a plot point. I also help free up time for her to write by excising the dog. I drop random toys on its furry little head from one of my many perches, causing it to jump up and down. Good exercise! Overall, I am a vital and cherished part of the author’s household. Now if I could just figure out where she hid those liver snacks!

Available Now! Wolfsblood: Shadow Wolf

Dood! Seriously!! This series has been a hoot to write! I love this world and can't wait to get into the next group of dominant shifters. Before that, though, you need to read the latest book in this series. Shadow Wolf... :)

Struggling to save her pack in a fight to the death, Leiah has no clue what she's in for when the Shadow Wolf, Rikker, intervenes. In one swoop, he claims her and threatens to take her away from the only family she's ever known. Leiah rejects his claim, even though she craves him as much as he craves her. Can these two Shadow Wolves find a balance before Leiah's beloved pack is torn apart?

EXCERPT!

Out of the corner of her eye, Leiah saw a blur of movement. One of Liana's cubs scrambled up the rock face to an overhanging ledge, a third yeti on his heels, swiping at the child with large, claw-tipped hands.

Leiah sprinted as hard as she could toward the yeti. She had no idea where the boy's mother was, but there was no time to find the other woman. She sprang, intending to land on the monster's back, but the yeti anticipated such a move. With a hard, bone-jarring swipe, the creature backhanded her in midair. The blow caught her across the chest, and Leiah heard and felt several ribs crack. Pain speared her insides, knocking the wind out of her. The coppery taste of blood filled her mouth, but she had no time to think about it. The yeti was on the boy.

On his perch high above the ground, the little cub huddled as close to the rock facing as he could, making himself as small as possible. Still, it wasn't far enough to escape the yeti's razor-like claws. The thing swiped at the boy, tearing three long gashes in the cub's shoulder. Yelping, he scrambled back until there was simply no more space to retreat.

Leiah sprang once again, this time going low, trying to get her jaws around the tendon as she had with the other yeti.

Again, the beast anticipated her move, kicking this time, the blow landing squarely on her temple. Leiah's world shattered in a haze of pain. Her ears rang and her vision blurred, turning everything a dull gray as unconsciousness threatened to overtake her.

Shaking her head, Leiah staggered to her feet and leapt at the creature once again, determined to defend the child with her dying breath. Time seemed to slow in her hazy state. She could see the hairy paw coming at her, claws extended and ready to shred her to ribbons in one vicious swipe.

Just as she registered it would be a fatal blow, something knocked the yeti flat on its back. Her vision blurred so that she couldn't make out what had come to her rescue, but it had to be fucking big to have knocked the thing so completely out of the fight. Ferocious growls and howls of pain permeated the air, the stench of blood and gore heavy all around her. Leiah missed the yeti and landed sprawled on her belly at the base of the icy cliff. Death was everywhere, and she wasn't certain how many of her own pack were counted among the fallen.

The cries of the dying yeti filled her head, and the stench of torn flesh assailed her nostrils. Her vision was still hazy, but she kept moving toward the cub, huddled so tightly against the sheer rock face. Knowing she couldn't take down the yeti in her present state, she concentrated her entire being on getting to the cub to offer what meager protection she could until his mother arrived. On some level, she knew she should be concerned about whatever creature had managed to take down a yeti with such ease, but she couldn't think about it just now. There was room in her injured mind and body for only one task, and that was protecting the cub.

Snarls and growls filled the air, the fighting going on and on for what seemed like forever. The pack was putting up a ferocious fight. Or getting slaughtered. She refused to consider that possibility. As quickly as her injured body allowed, she snagged the cub by the scruff of the neck and leaped down to the snow- and ice-covered ground below. She landed hard, further injuring herself, and the cub yelped as he went flying. Immediately, the child scrambled to his feet and took off at a dead run to the rocky caves where they made their den. Faintly, she saw the child's mother run after him, then the two were gone.

Satisfied she'd done all she could do for the child and injured beyond anything she'd ever endured, Leiah lay her head down in the snow and succumbed to oblivion.

* * *

The blood lust was hard on Rikker. He'd taken down the yeti as it had made another deadly swipe at the female wolf, but it wasn't nearly enough. Everything in him screamed to kill the beast over and over. All around him, smaller wolves crouched, teeth bared, muscles bunched, ready to strike, but none did. Only the female Alpha seemed willing to fight for the pack.
Pitiful!

They didn't deserve his help, but they were obviously important to the female, and he would help her because he had to. Even as she lay bleeding in the snow, her gaze fixed on the retreating form of the cub she'd tried so valiantly to rescue. Yet no one seemed to feel the need to save her.

With the efficient ease of many such battles, Rikker dispatched the final remaining yeti. It had been in full retreat, but he knew better than to leave a yeti alive who had the scent of the pack. It would track them to their den and kill the lot of them.

He stood over the final fallen yeti, surveying the carnage strewn over the ice and snow. The Alpha she-wolf lay in a heap, blood trickling from her nose and mouth, her snow-white fur matted with darkening blood. As he watched, her form shimmered slightly, as if she fought the change, then shifted into her human form. Her skin was a vivid green with yellow accents, starkly highlighted by the snowy ground beneath her. Long, sea-green hair draped her body artfully, even amid the caked blood. The chartreuse strands looked like spun silk and gleamed in the waning sunlight.

Knowing they had to get underground and that she desperately needed medical attention, Rikker shifted form and scooped her up. She was light and fit, though feminine curves pressed softly against the hardness of his torso. The pack hadn't even bothered to cover their tracks. Any one of the numerous predators in the area could spot their unguarded flight and catch them unaware.

Snarling at their stupidity, he hurried over the snow and ice until he reached the den. Quickly ducking inside, covering the tunnel as fast as he could, Rikker held his burden close. Her warm, inviting curves seemed to beckon him like a moth to a flame. Once he came to the open alcove where the others waited, he laid her gently on the rocky ground. The others seemed surprised to see him, though no one made an effort to fight him off. They merely huddled together like beaten dogs. Rikker glanced at the unconscious woman before snarling a command to them.

"Find her warm clothes and furs. I will return when I've erased all trace of your presence from the entrance to your lair." Then he shifted once more to his wolf form and scampered back to the surface to protect the pack as best he could before sunset.

His breath was coming too fast... panting. She could barely feel his heart beating beneath her hand where it rested on his chest. His lean, muscled body was wracked with visible pain. Medusa knew Darius was dying despite his earlier denials.
She wouldn't let that happen. They had been reunited after nearly two centuries apart. Medusa had never thought such a thing possible, but she hadn't known about Darius's immortality. Or perhaps he wasn't immortal when they met. Whatever the case may be, his immortality hadn't come with invulnerability. The spell he'd cast to help them escape death at the hands of his cohorts had stressed his body to the breaking point.
Medusa had to save his life before she could think about reveling in their renewed relationship. Only a few things kept her from acting. First, neither of them had any clothing since they had fled capture after a round of getting re-acquainted sex. Second, Darius's escape spell had landed them on the side of a very high mountain with no path down. Medusa could jump it, but not with Darius in tow. She couldn't use a magical transport spell either. Transporting without knowing where she was or where she wanted to go had its own dangers, but the strain of more magic running through Darius's body might kill him.
That left the cave at their back as shelter against the elements and possible attack. She glanced over her shoulder at the wide opening of the cave. Her vampiric sight, able to pierce any darkness, couldn't make out the back of the cave, which meant it was deep. She couldn't tell if it was inhabited.
Darius wheezed before coughing. His cough had a watery sound and a coppery smell. He had blood in his lungs. She smoothed her hand through his kitten-soft hair in a soothing gesture. The motion calmed her as much as him. She loved petting his hair and watching the light shimmer off the scattered strands of blond and red combined with the brown. She wouldn't lose him.
Medusa didn't have time to worry about what dangers the cave held. She could handle any animal, no matter how big. She needed to get Darius to a safe, secure spot so she could help him recover.
She lifted him against her chest and rushed inside the cave.
"I should be carrying you," Darius whispered. He tried to laugh but it came out as a cough instead.
"You need to shut up and save your strength."
He grunted but didn't try to speak again.
Medusa carried him to the depths of the cave. It went back a fair distance. Good. That meant she would see any intruders long before they saw her. She expected Darius's cohorts any second. There was no way the mages would pass up recapturing an escaped vampire and a mage traitor.
Low growling from an animal stopped Medusa. She placed Darius on the ground behind her, propped against the cave wall, and then faced the oversized lump ahead of her -- the one she had mistaken for a rock a moment ago. It unfolded itself into a very large, very grumpy bear.
"Medusa."
"Quiet. I'll deal with this and then help you." She stayed close to the wall as she paced forward. A quick snap of her metal ring-covered, floor-length dreadlocks near the bear's head would frighten the animal into running from the cave.
She turned her head in a quick jerk while adding a small telekinetic push with her hand so one lock would hit the bear. Except it didn't. Her hair waved forward as though pushed by a breeze and then settled against her side once more. The usual sound of metal links clashing against one another was absent. That was when Medusa remembered her haircut at the time of her capture. The mage holding her had sheared off her hair at the roots and had taken great delight doing it.
The hair grew back in a matter of seconds, resuming its rope-like style as it grew, but the metal links she used to adorn her hair, turning it into twenty lethal chains the use of which she had honed over the last two hundred years, were gone. She had to come up with another method to deal with the bear, who had only grown more agitated with her movements.
She had vampiric speed and strength as well as sight in the inky darkness of the cave, but she didn't want to hurt the bear, only convince him to leave. Maybe a show of power would do it...
She rushed the bear. He smacked her with his paw, and she let the blow knock her to the ground. It was her turn to grunt when he brought his front legs down on her shoulders. The attack might have crushed a mortal, but she hadn't been mortal in a very long time. Sick as the bear was, she could easily have overpowered him, but instead she let him think he was winning.
He went for her neck, ready to rip her throat out, but she grabbed him in a tight hug. His teeth sank into her shoulder as he tried to pull free. She ignored that pain to see her plan through.
The bear had tasted her blood. She knew what that meant for a human -- a mental connection between them, and for the human, longer life, faster healing, and enhanced strength and speed. She only hoped the same held true for other mammals. "Hear me and understand."
The bear stilled. Medusa could smell fear again, but she didn't have time to reassure him. He could understand her. That was all she needed to know.
She loosened her hold. "Let me up."
He released her and jumped back.
She sat up and held her hand out to him. "You didn't hurt me. I did that so you could understand me." She wiggled her fingers at him. "Come here."
He looked at her one way and then the other before stepping forward so she could touch his head.
"Good boy. Good boy. You're a big, beautiful bear, aren't you?" She smiled when the bear grunted. "My friend and I only need shelter. That's all. We didn't mean to disturb you. Can we stay?"
She smiled when he licked her hand.
"Thank you." She gave his head a pat and then turned her attention back to Darius.
His was another heartbeat that didn't sound steady. Unlike the bear, she couldn't feed Darius her blood. Renewed relationship or not, he was still a mage. He might have helped her escape and professed to love her, but that love might not extend to sharing blood with a vampire. Besides, she had something better to share.
She returned to him and knelt at his side. "Darius?"
His odd eyes -- one blue and one brown -- looked at her, but they were unfocused. He tried to speak, but she covered his lips with her finger. She smiled when he kissed her finger.
"You aren't healing. You need power. Take it from me." She placed his hand over her left breast, above her heart.
Darius rasped, "Such beautiful breasts." His fingers twitched as though he would have squeezed the small yet pert mound but he didn't have that much strength.
"Yes, they're lovely. Now take the energy you need."
"Kill you. No." He pulled at his hand, but she held him.
"It won't kill me. I can die one hundred mortal deaths and still be fine. Take my energy, damn it. I won't lose you again. You said you wouldn't die. Have the centuries turned you into a liar?"
Darius sucked in a breath as he closed his eyes.
She thought he was breathing his last until she felt it. His power. He drew on her life force, pulling the energy through her body and into his own. The more he took, the better he got, but the weaker she felt.
The world turned fuzzy and then black. She really hated mortal death. She liked to avoid it at all costs. Only for Darius would she endure it this time.

Jordan winced with the impact, but he didn't struggle against the werewolf's grip around his throat. The man tightened the hold, claws threatening to pierce Jordan's skin.
From one set of captors into the hands of another. "Deleon. I need to speak to Deleon!" Jordan had expected a cold reception, but he hadn't realized just how strong the wolves were.
"Who are you?"
Despite the hand at his neck, Jordan glanced over to his right. A tall, muscular figure stepped out of the shadows. His long coat obscured his body. When the hood fell back, Jordan could only stare. He'd seen many werewolves in his lifetime, but none quite matched the allure of the man before him.
Jet black hair fell over broad shoulders, and the sharp features of the man's face held no flaws whatsoever. Where Jordan was slim and lithe, this man was nothing but pure muscle. Jesus...
"He asked you a question," the brute with the iron fist growled, snapping Jordan's attention back to the matter at hand. "Answer or..."
"Release him, Vaughn."
"Of course." The brute -- Vaughn, apparently -- stepped back, letting Jordan fall to his knees on the filthy alley pavement.
"You are not one of us." The man in the coat crouched down before Jordan. "You are one of them."
"Jordan Silva." Jordan coughed. He glared at Vaughn, then looked back to the man before him. "I was told to find Deleon."
"Why?"
Jordan gestured to the rusted door a few feet farther down the alley. Vaughn headed for the door and jerked it open. Jordan looked back at the man in front of him. "I was told Deleon could help her."
"Marcus!"
The man -- Marcus -- stood and joined Vaughn. A moment later, they emerged from the doorway, the young girl in Vaughn's arms. Jordan prayed the man was gentle with her. Marcus returned to Jordan, surprising Jordan by offering him a hand up.
"Come with us."
"What? Marcus, he's a vampire!" Vaughn snapped, shooting Jordan a scowl that would've curdled a human's blood.
"Take her home, Vaughn. Tia will look after her."
Vaughn snorted but obeyed without further question. Marcus sighed.
"You must forgive him. He has a strong dislike for your kind."
"After what I've seen, I would too," Jordan said.
Marcus lifted one dark eyebrow. "Why did you leave Gray? Why risk your life for one of ours?"
Jordan stared at a point over Marcus' shoulder. "Working for Gray wasn't exactly by choice. I was ordered to kill her, but I couldn't. I need to speak to Deleon."
"Come. I'm sure he will very much like to hear what you have to say."
Jordan followed Marcus a short distance to a sprawling house surrounded by a tall security fence. Marcus keyed in a series of numbers on the keypad, and the gate unlocked. Jordan didn't see any sign of Vaughn or the girl, and he hoped to the gods she was okay now.
"The others will not take well to a vampire being in our midst," Marcus warned as he led the way up a long driveway. "So long as you stay with me, you will be safe, however."
The front door looming before them opened and Jordan stepped in behind Marcus. The house felt deathly still. Jordan knew the wolves watched him from shadows. Marcus continued down a hall and stopped before another door. He opened it and waved Jordan inside.
"I really need to see Deleon."
Marcus sat behind a dark wood desk, feet propped on the edge, chair tipped back. "So speak."
Jordan sat down, mouth dropping open. "You..." Marcus nodded. "I know this is all suspicious, but I'm here to help."
"Why would a vampire -- one of Dalton's vampires -- help us?" Marcus stood, his chair hitting the floor with a loud bang. Hands braced on the desk, he leaned over and glared at Jordan. "Your kind has done nothing but treat us as slaves. Gray has stolen our people, killed countless others. What the fuck do you want?"
"I know what he's doing," Jordan answered. "And I know where."
Marcus' dark blue eyes narrowed. "What's in it for you?"
"Redemption."
